President’s Message
Devin Elkin
I would like to extend my thanks to
whom ever ordered the early spring
weather. What a Feb and March it
has been, now watch I’ve probably jinxed us into 10ft of
snow to come in April. Sorry.
In this month’s message I would like to take a minute to
explain the differences between the Lake Associations
and the Community Association. When the developer
built the communities of Lake Midnapore and Lake Sundance it was their decision to have the lake associations
separate from the community association. This was
done in an effort to have a specific focus for each board.
The primary objective for the lake boards is the day to
day operations on that facility, the logistical challenges
that arise running a year round park. We have seen a
tremendous amount of success by both lake associations in continually adapting to new needs, challenges
and family events. From the on ice curling bonspiel at
Lake Sundance to the natural amphitheatre that results
in a great venue for Lake Midnapore family movie night
these two boards function extremely well and always
have the needs and values of our community at heart.
The annual dues that we pay go directly to the success
of these venues exclusively.
We are the Midsun Community Association a board that
represents the 17,000 residents of our two communities.
We are the communication avenue between you the

residents and the city/province. We work very closely
with civic and provincial politicians to ensure that your
concerns are heard, addressed and if possible fixed. As
it relates to the lakes one might say that we have nothing to do with the lake boards but I would be the first
to tell you that is far from true! During time that I have
been part of the Midsun CA I have seen tremendous improvements between the CA and the Lake boards, after
all our goals are very much the same. To continue to put
the residents first by offering world class facilities and
community events that forge relationships and bring
families closer together. We have introduced new programs through the efforts of our rec programmer and
been able to partner with Lake Midnapore in hosting
them there. Yoga on the beach, fly fishing, tennis lessons and I see nothing but more amazing activities in
the future. We also plan to see if there is potential in mirroring these at the Lake in Sundance in the future. This
only increases the profile of our community and makes
the desirability factor high, increasing our property values at the same time. I have amazing respect for each
lake association and the staff that run these spaces, they
work tirelessly and do a great job.
Your lake card gets you access into each lake year
round, so what does a Midsun Community membership get you? Great question, once it was something
that was a key driver in our funding but now with so
many programs being offered we are fortunately less
dependent on the revenue from memberships and
more concerned on the value of having one. So arriving in your mailboxes at the end of May will be your
NEW FREE community membership. So from now until it arrives we will be outlining the partnerships that
are being offered by local business and how they are
contributing to the Community Business Partnership
Programs and what special discounts/offerings you will
get when you show your community membership card.
Also what discounts will be offered when you enroll in
one of the Midsun Community Centres programs and
overall how we plan on using this campaign to increase
and foster a better community.
We are living in a community that has amazing representation, you have three boards that all function to
provide community, foster relationships and strive to
make this the best place to call home. I am proud to be
part of this and look forward to the success and milestones we will achieve in the future.
Loving where I live,
Devin

“To better reach
and serve the
communities of
Midnapore and
Sundance”
Community associations are a way for neighbours to
work together on mutual goals and provide support
to the areas we live in. For over 25 years, the Mid-Sun
Community Association has been dedicated to improving quality of life in the communities of Midnapore and
Sundance. Through the work of the Mid-Sun Board of
Directors and the staff at the Mid-Sun Community Centre, the association provides a broad array of community services:
•Community Events: Mom’s Market- Used Toy and
Clothing Sale /Small Business Showcase, Community
Clean-Up, Taste of Mid-Sun
•Access to government: Community concerns regularly
discussed with representatives from Municipal and
Provincial Government
•Development Concerns Addressed: Home businesses,
infill construction, area redevelopment, municipal and
commercial development
•Traffic Committee: lobbied for pedestrian lights on Sun
Valley Boulevard, addressed concerns regarding Stoney
and Macleod Trail interchange, applied for additional
Sundance entrance sign along Sun Valley Boulevard
•Community programs: Mid-Sun Community Garden,
Little Library, Future Mid-Sun Skate Park
•Community Centre Operations and Programming:
Recreation Programs for all; Seniors Programs; Out-ofSchool Care and Preschool; and more!
•Residential Communication: “Mid-Sun Messages”
newsletter, Website, Facebook and Twitter
•Membership discounts for recreational programming
at Mid-Sun Community Centre
•Discount on programming at Trico Centre
The Mid-Sun Community Associations current goals
include working to further engage the community, improving the programming and facilities at the Mid-Sun
Community Centre, moving forward with the goals of
the traffic committee, and increasing the usage of our
community garden. We would love for you to join us.
Joining your community association is a great way to
gain experience in a wide variety of areas, such as project management, event planning, fundraising, board
etiquette, city planning, facility management and leadership. Let us know if you would like to help out in any
of the areas discussed above, or another that concerns
or interests you.
The current cost for a yearly membership is $20 (watch
for new membership info next month!). Board of Director meetings are held once a month, September
through June. All are welcome. Please see http://www.

GARDEN NEWS
Breaking News
From The Garden!
Spring has arrived and the Mid
Sun Community Garden is planning the registration process for
the 2015 gardening season. Traditionally previous
gardeners (2014) are given a deadline to renew their
membership, and we will continue this tradition. The
2015 Deadline will be set at April 12. By the time you
read this you will have received your registration
forms and instructions, by email so if you have not
responded this will be your FINAL reminder.
The reason for the early registration is because we
have received several requests from new gardeners,
and would like to respond to their requests in a timely
manner. Another reason is we will also have several
projects and would like to have gardeners volunteer
early.
Please note that The Mid Sun Community Association has been invited by Lowes Hardware into their
Hero’s Program and the Garden needs to get behind
this project with as many eager volunteers as possible. In 2014 we received almost $1000 in Garden and
Community Centre tools and equipment and Plans
for the 2015 Hero’ grant have already started.

Medium Box
Large Box
$20, 20-25lbs of fruits and vegetables
$25, 30-35lbs of fruits and vegetables
$30, 40-45lbs of fruits and vegetables

change with each delivery.
The Good Food Box makes top-quality, fresh food
available in a way that does not stigmatize people, fosters community development and promotes healthy
eating. Available to people with all financial means.
What is the Good Food Box?
The Good Food Box (GFB) is a program under the Community Kitchen Program of Calgary whereby you can
purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at a very low cost.
The Good Food Box is a hands-up program as opposed
to hands-out. We offer all Calgarians’ sustainable access to nutritious food to ensure that no one has to go
hungry. The boxes are put together and delivered by
dedicated volunteers who along with The Community
Kitchen desire to see individuals and families accessing
affordable nutritious food.
How Does the Good Food Box Operate?
The GFB operates by buying fresh, top quality produce
directly from farmers and from wholesale clubs. The
food is bought in bulk and dropped off at their warehouse. Their volunteers then divide up the produce
into portions and put the Good Food boxes together.
The boxes contain the maximum produce possible in
them for the price.
How to Order a Good Food Box
When a member of the community wants to order a
Good Food Box, they must call (403-254-8058), email
([email protected]) or drop in to the community center, in advance of the cut-off date and time as listed.

A
bout us:
The Barking Lot is has been a reputable professional grooming salon and all natural pet health
and supply store in south Calgary for nearly 40 years. We
are a dedicated and dynamic group of friends and family,
providing exceptional grooming services, products, and
customer service. Our groomers are skilled in professional
grooming techniques and use specialized, top-quality
products and equipment to make your pet’s grooming
appointment a safe and comfortable experience. We understand the particular grooming and styling needs of all
breeds, and can advise you on home grooming maintenance as well as seasonal grooming needs. We also offer
some of the healthiest foods available on the market,
as well supplements, toys, accessories etc. We consider
ourselves a unique specialty store caring for your animal
companions.
find a food that both agrees with your dog and/or cat and
is appetizing rather than just making a sale. We are firm
believers that there is no single ‘best’ food on the market,
and that every cat and dog does a little bit different on
each formula. We also encourage customers to switch
foods occasionally if possible (with the exception of allergies or other underlying health issues). It’s incredibly
healthy and helpful to introduce different proteins, fruits,
vegetables, legumes and vitamins and minerals into a
dog or cat’s diet. Switching foods is one way we can help
build an overall hardier composition in your pet. Usually
a slow transition is best when changing foods. We like to
promote and support Canadian foods and companies but
we do have a selection of high quality American foods.
We carry a full selection of top of the line dried, canned,
and frozen foods.
If we don’t have what you need, we will special order it for
you. Most of our foods have a frequent buyer/loyalty program, it’s usually buy 10 or 12 and receive a free bag. Feel
free to ask staff for any assistance or alternative food suggestions as we are all very knowledgeable. The Barking
Lot is open seven days a week, 7:30-8:00 Monday-Friday,
Saturday 9:00-5:30, and 10:00-5:00 on Sundays. 403-2562095. #710-22 Midlake blvd. SE, Calgary, AB T2X-2X7.
Grooming services:
We offer anything and everything that a premier, professional grooming salon offers. From nail trims on a walk-in
basis (Monday-Saturday, $15 for a nail clip, $20 for a clip
and file) to the fanciest of show/breed trims for any dog
or cat. Whatever you wish is our command. We are more
than happy to make recommendations and suggestions
for the proper trim depending on the time of year but
we really like to listen to our client’s needs and execute
accordingly. Depending on the day and the dogs, a full
groom will usually take between two and several hours
for the more detailed trims. A specific pick up time can
be requested upon making your appointment. We offer
a clean, bright, and safe grooming environment. Most of
our customers are long time regulars but we are always
accepting new clients.
Food philosophy:
First and foremost, we pride ourselves in offering only all
natural diets with holistic and recognizable ingredients.
We do not carry any food that has by-product, by-product
meals, unspecified animal digest, plasma, fats, questionable ingredients, etc. We deal only with manufacturers
who guarantee their foods. It’s more important for us to

St. Philip Fine Arts School
This month at St. Philip Fine Arts School we are helping all our students develop resiliency skills by presenting our first Wellness Conference.
St. Bonaventure School
This month at St. Bonaventure there are many exciting
happenings that are representative of spirituality, citizenship, and excellence.
Our Grade 9 students are participating in the Junior
Achievement program at Mount Royal College. This
event has clear linkage to 21st century learning and the
aim of developing engaged and ethical citizens with
an entrepreneurial spirit. Additionally, the Grade 9 students will participate in the Party Program.
Badminton season is nearing completion. Congratulations to all of our coaches and players on a successful
season. Also, many thanks to our parents for supporting
the program. Our next interscholastic activity will be
flag football. Go Falcons!
Spiritually, our school initiatives of the District’s faith
theme of “Loving Kindness” are well supported by the
school community. All proceeds from these events go
towards our social justice projects, both locally and
abroad. The month of April will also see St. Bonaventure
students, staff, and parents come together to celebrate
Holy Thursday with the St. Bonaventure Parish.
Finally, students at St. Bonaventure are looking forward
to the opportunity to engage in conversation with
many inspirational speakers from various walks of life
during the school’s “Think Big Day”, which will take place
on April 22.
Resiliency is the ability to adapt to and recover from
difficult situations. It is learning to cope with stress
and being able to develop a set of morals and values
that promote positive choices. Resiliency involves
building confidence in communicating with others to
work through challenges and asking for help when
needed. Generating strategies in early childhood
helps foster independence and provides the child
with the necessary tools needed to overcome challenges.
At our Wellness Conference, students will choose
from over 20 different sessions with a variety of
topics; health, physical activity, nutrition, and stress
management to name a few. We have invited health
professionals to present on health and safety. We have
invited Olympic athletes to share their techniques in
finding a balance in life while they achieve excellence
in their sport and how they have learned to deal with
failures in their lives. All of our teachers will choose
an area of expertise to share depending on their experiences. One session will stress the importance of
family meals, where valuable time is spent discussing
the day and connecting with loved ones.
It takes a village to raise a child. We can all help our
children of today deal with life’s problems and mistakes as opportunities to learn and build resiliency.

Cleaning with
Green Calgary!
Spring is just around the corner and for many of us that
means popping open the windows and cleaning away winter’s dust and dirt. But before you start using the cleaners
under your sink, take a moment to look at the products you
have and examine the ingredients on each of their labels.
You might be surprised at what you find (or don’t find!).
Labelling on cleaning products is voluntary for cleaning
product manufacturers in Canada; so you may not be able
to find what you are spraying around the house just by
looking at the bottle. Imagine eating a bowl of cereal from a
box with no ingredients or an incomplete list of ingredients.
What’s not being listed that we’re exposing ourselves to?
Because there are so few regulations limiting what
companies can put into their products, most conventional cleaning supplies (even the ones that say they are
“green”) contain hazardous ingredients that are known
to be harmful to people and the environment.
The one place we can control our exposure is in our
homes, by limiting the toxic cleaners and personal care
products we bring in.
When shopping for cleaners follow these simple rules:

If your dog is a very young puppy it could simply be a
murmur because the normal hole, which exists between
the chambers of a foetus’ heart, hasn’t closed yet. The
veterinarian may just recommend making a note of it
and checking the puppy in a few weeks. In older dogs
and cats, blood work to check for various diseases, an
electrocardiogram (ECG), and radiographs (x-rays) to see
the size and shape of the heart and to check the lungs
are recommended. Your veterinarian may recommend
referral to a specialist for a cardiac ultrasound to visualize the internal mechanics of the heart. Or a pet may be
referred to a cardiologist, who may in turn recommend
the pet wear a halter monitor for 24 hours to measure
the heart’s rate and changes through various activities.

Murmurs are sounds created by turbulence of the liquid, blood, moving through the tubes and valves of the
heart. Sounds are symptoms; a sound is not a diagnosis.
If a murmur is investigated and found to be of no consequence it is called an innocent murmur.

62. Normal for a cat is about 160 to 180 beats per minute
and 164 had been recorded for this cat all her life. She
had developed a mass in her throat which was irritating
her vagal nerve and causing the heart rate to slow. The
problem wasn’t at the heart at all.
Cardiomyopathy is the term for diseases of the heart
muscles and how the heart is signalled to contract. Many
years ago I had a client who took his Doberman out to
exercise by chasing his truck (A horrible idea!). The dog
came to my clinic with a heart rate of 240 which a dog
cannot live long with. We gave the dog drugs to convert
his heart back to a normal rate of about 80 to 100. This
dog was subsequently referred to a cardiologist who
treated him for a two years for a genetic disease of the
heart muscle that he eventually died of.
Tachycardia in a big dog with decreased energy and otherwise a normal physical examination has also been the
clue leading me to diagnose a tumour of the right atrium
of the heart called a hemangiosarcoma. These tumours
often start to bleed into the pericardial sac around the
heart and the heart starts beating really fast because it
can’t expand properly in the bag filling with blood.
Your pet’s heart rate is measured in beats per minute. A
heart rate that is too fast is called tachycardia; too slow is
called bradycardia. What your pet’s normal heart rate has
been in past examinations is very valuable as not every
pet’s heart rate falls within normal limits.
This is a tiny window to the many and varied diseases of
your pet’s body that can change the sound or rate of a
heart beating. Once a specific diagnosis is made a veterinarian will discuss treatment options and prognoses
with the pet owner. I can’t over emphasize how important it is to have your pet examined annually and that the
physical examination is the keystone to any preventative
health care program.
Recently I examined an older cat and her heart rate was

Understanding
Inflammation
By Dr. Alma Nenshi, Registered Chiropractor
Your body employs a number of powerful biological
responses to keep you alive and healthy. Inflammation has an important role to play in the body’s ability
to heal, but in some situations it can become challenging.
What is Inflammation?
When your body undergoes an injury or encounters
an infection or irritant, it uses inflammation to aid in
the healing process. The body releases chemical substances into the tissue around the injury or infection,
which allows blood more access to the problematic
area. The skin around the inflamed area often grows
red and might feel warm to the touch. Inflammation
can also cause pain as the released chemicals stimulate nerve endings and make the area more sensitive.
This sensitivity prompts you to give the injured area
plenty of rest, helping to improve the body’s ability
to heal.
Inflammation Gone Awry
In the short term, inflammation provides a valuable

Understanding
Inflammation cont’d
service. However, inflammation can become chronic,
meaning that it can last for months or even years.
Chronic inflammation can occur if the body’s natural
systems fail to address the root cause of the inflammatory response, or if the immune response mistakenly
starts to attack healthy tissue. This type of inflammation plays a role in a variety of chronic conditions, such
as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis.
Inflammation can also interfere with your life by causing congestion, fatigue, high blood pressure, allergies,
and weight gain.
While everyone experiences inflammation from time
to time in response to injury or irritation, some lifestyle factors can make you more prone to unnecessary inflammation. A study conducted by the Emory
University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia
found that sleep deprivation raises the body’s levels
of inflammatory markers, substances in the blood
that show that inflammation is present. People who
are overweight and obese also tend to show higher
levels of these markers. However, a study from the
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle,
Washington, found that postmenopausal women
who were overweight or obese showed a measurable
decrease in inflammation markers when they lost 5%
of their body weight.
Keeping Inflammation Under Control
If you believe you are suffering from uncontrolled
inflammation, check in with your primary care provider to rule out any life-threatening conditions. Then,
schedule a time to talk with your chiropractor. A 2010
study by the University of Quebec at Montreal found
evidence that chiropractic manipulation can cause
inflammation markers to normalize. A chiropractor
can also make lifestyle suggestions to help make sure
your diet, exercise and sleep levels support a healthy
inflammation response.
Inflammation is a very good thing in the right circumstances, but it can cause many challenges in the
wrong ones. Certainly there is no need to keep living
with painful chronic inflammation. Your solution may
just be a phone call away.

two years; savings that took 50 years to accumulate.
Jobs, infrastructure, health care and education demand
a prudent and practical response. And that is what the
Alberta Government has done. We are moving away
from the oil rollercoaster and our resource revenue dependency. We are shifting away from our addiction to
resource revenues and that shift begins now.

Alberta is Canada’s economic engine. Alberta is a leader
in quality of life and sustainable development. How Alberta arrived there wasn’t by accident or good luck. We
achieved this by perseverance and by maintaining our
commitment to our values. We are now faced with the
greatest challenge in a generation. Alberta’s revenues
are in deep decline.
It is sometimes difficult to truly understand the scope of
a problem as large as Alberta’s revenue shortfall. Since
September 2014 global oil prices have fallen 60%. This
equates to 1/5 of Alberta’s public revenue. The revenue
hasn’t weakened; $7 billion has been lost. To give you a
better understanding, a good comparison the loss of $7
billion equals Alberta’s entire education budget or for
another comparison this would be the money needed to
run our healthcare system from January to July.
Contrary speculation, oil prices are not going to rebound
quickly. This time the problem is much steeper and will
remain with us for much longer than Albertans have
seen before. Government has worked with energy and
financial experts. Although we can expect oil prices to
recover by 2017/2018 to $80 per barrel; we simply cannot afford to do nothing and wait. If Alberta chooses to
wait for oil prices to increase we will be forced to fall back
on our financial resources and that is not a solution our
government has accepted.
If we do nothing we will be in a position where we will
have eliminated all of Alberta’s savings within less than
The Alberta Government has released a fiscally prudent
budget with a balanced approach to dealing with these
challenges. The 2015/2016 Budget reflects Alberta’s
economic reality and the values Albertans share. Deficits of this proportion are not easily solved. We listened
to economists who advised Alberta’s government not to
move too fast in cutting costs and expenditures. Closing the gap between revenue and expenditures in one
budget would mean drastic cuts and spending measures that would sink Alberta into a recession. This would
leave us vulnerable in maintaining essential services
and unable to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Alberta needed to shift our thinking, our old habits and
find a new and sustainable approach.
The Alberta Government has released our 10-year fiscal plan. Our plan is prudent and looks to the future;
allowing our children’s generations to enjoy the same
prosperity Albertans have enjoyed. It is a decisive action
plan and a balanced response to the challenges we face.
We are committed to staying with our plan and doing
our part to keep Alberta on track. We have taken action
to protect jobs and our essential services while keeping
our commitment to the Alberta advantage. Yes we have
acted prudently but we have ensured our most vulnerable are protected –not just for today but for tomorrow.
I hope you will share your thoughts and feedback with
me on the budget.

Hello Ward 14!
April is a transition month here in Calgary. Technically
it is spring, but anyone who has been here for more
than a year knows that it is spring in name only. We
will likely be living with snow on the ground for a little
while longer, and although temperatures will gradually be climbing, there is still the definite possibility of
some cold weather.
I’m going to blaze the trail into spring this month regardless of the conditions outside, but first let me
mention Aldertalk. This month’s edition of Aldertalk
is on April 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Queensland
Community Hall (649 Queensland Drive SE). If you
can’t make it this month, you can find upcoming dates
at www.calgary.ca/aldertalk.
City landfills will be taking yard waste free of charge
from residential customers again this year. Your chance
is from April 17 to May 31, but before you leave for the
landfill there are a couple of things you should remember. First, you should only bring things like leaves,
branches, and plants (no sod, please). Second, it needs
to either be left loose or be in a paper yard waste bag.
It’s a great program that really helps the City cut down
on waste, and this year yard waste from the September snowstorm will also be accepted. I suggest you
take advantage of it, and visit www.calgary.ca/waste.
Another sign of spring is street cleaning. You should
keep an eye out for signs on the streets in your neighbourhood starting April 13, because that is when Calgary’s Roads department begins its 2015 Spring cleanup program.
By now some Ward 14 communities have been notified of Canada Post’s intention to convert their mail
service from door-to-door to community mailboxes.
While service to those who have been contacted will
be converted within the year, all service across the
ward, the city, and the country will be converted within the next five years.
Several have contacted my office about the changes,
and rightly so. My door is always open, so to speak,
and I am always here to listen, but I want to make it
clear that Canada Post is leading the engagement process with residents, not the City of Calgary.
Canada Post, under the Federal Canada Post Act, may
install, erect or relocate in any public place, including
a public roadway, any receptacle or device to be used
for the collection, delivery or storage of mail. However,
if residents have issues with the sites selected, they
should call Canada Post.
I will write again for May. Until then, take care and feel
free to contact me anytime.

Investing 303 involves mutual funds, stocks and more sophisticated investments
Investing 404 looks into alternatives after the foundation of your investments
has been established. With extra money one can buy a bigger house, purchase a
vacation property, invest in works of art or look at other things to collect that should
increase in value or at least keep up with inflation.
For the past 64 years the Calgary Numismatic Society (CNS) has quietly been
providing a forum where investors in coins, paper money, tokens or other forms of
money can meet, discuss, debate and decide on the value of a great many items
relating to all forms of money. In the 1960s coin collecting became a craze with all
manner of people getting into the hobby with absurd profits being made. The silver
crash of 1970 brought this to an abrupt end and many were left with large losses.
Since then the value of coins and other quality numismatic items have kept pace
with inflation. Those who do the research, do not expect to get rich overnight and
invest in quality items have found both an enjoyable hobby and a way to build
alternative assets in their investment portfolio.
The CNS welcomes new members who want to further their knowledge about this
investment alternative. The club meets ten times a year (except July and August)
on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm at the following southwest Calgary
location:

Why Choose A Broker?
www.landy.ca
Insurance is a complicated commodity.
There are minimum legal requirements for
certain kinds of coverage, minimum kinds
of coverage for certain kinds of things and
there are things that you can't get coverage
for. The rules are constantly changing and
to stay on top of what is the best that can
be done for your circumstances at the best
possible price, you need an insurance broker
to look after your insurance needs. The
insurance broker invests the time necessary
to learn what kinds of insurance their
customers want. Matching the insurance
customer with the company that wants to
insure those kinds of customers results in
a good rate for the customer and a good
customer for the insurer. It is not any more
complicated than that!
