Hello Braeside! Thank you to our residents who attended our AGM held on Monday, January 20, 2014. Braeside continues to have a strong team of volunteers who
serve on the Board and it’s a pleasure to be associated
with such a great group of people. We look forward to
bringing you monthly updates and, of course, reminding you of our upcoming events.
Join us on Friday evening, February 7 for our annual
Family Skating Evening and Used Book Sale. Activities
get under way at 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Bring your family
for lots of fun on our outdoor rinks, try snowshoeing or
sit by the fire. Indoors there will be family bingo, crafts
for the children, a special concession with homemade
chili and hot dogs and, of course the ever popular Used
Book Sale – all books $1.00 or less. Please note the Community Office will be closed on Monday, February 17 for
Family Day.
February brings our Annual Winterfest Family Skate Evening on Friday, February 7, 2014. Our brand new rink is
in excellent shape thanks to our great team of rink rats!
We invite you to bring your skates and have some outdoor fun. There will be warm food and hot chocolate
at the concession along with the usual junk foods! Our
used books are ready to be browsed and still only cost
$1 each. Additionally, inside the building we’ll have family bingo and other activities to warm up any cold toes.

Kicking off our spring events, we invite you to participate in our upcoming Community Clean Up/Recycle
Day/Free Store to be held on April 26, 2014. Look for the
list of items we may accept (as per City guidelines) in
upcoming bulletins. While it is not mandatory that you
have a community membership to bring in any items, as
is the case in some communities, we encourage you to
purchase a Braeside membership to support initiatives
such as this clean up day. It takes all of us to look out for
our Community. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the food bank, so please bring along
a little something.
June 14 2014 will bring our 7th Annual Parade! What a
fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Dress up your
dog or your bike and go for a short walk through the
neighborhood. We move the Parade around the neighborhood so different residents get the fun of a parade
passing by their front door each year.
As usual, July brings our Annual Stampede Breakfast!
More details will follow as these events draw closer.

Family Day
Family Day occurs on the third Monday in February each
year. It was declared a statutory holiday to recognize the
values held by the proud pioneers who built Alberta.
On Family Day, banks, schools and government offices
are closed, and public transportation runs on a reduced
holiday schedule. To avoid any disappointments, be
sure to call ahead to restaurants, stores and attractions
to confirm their hours of operation.

Exercise Program
at Braeside
The goal of this program is to help older adults maintain physical function, mobility, strength, and balance
so they are less likely to fall. It provides exercises classes
that improve strength and balance and help to prevent
falls for at risk seniors in the community. Classes are led
by a certified older adult fitness instructor and consist
of warm up, cardiovascular, muscle strength, flexibility
and relaxation exercises which help to improve strength
and balance. Participants go at their own speed, participating in sitting and standing exercises using a variety
of equipment including balls, exercise bands and light
weights. Fitness progress is checked for evaluation.
This is a FREE drop in program - no registration is
required. It will run Tuesdays, January 14 to May 27
from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
The secret of
success is to go from
mistake to mistake
without losing your
enthusiasm.

February Is Heart Month
Alberta Health Services
Do you know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack
and what to do if someone experiences these? Knowing
can make the difference between life and death.
Recognizing and responding immediately to the warning signs of a potential heart attack can significantly improve survival and recovery. February is Heart Month
- take the time to be heart safe and learn how you can
reduce your risk.
What to do when seconds count
• Call 9-1-1 immediately. Early treatment can greatly reduce
heart damage and make the difference of life and death.
• Treatment starts the moment EMS arrives. Paramedics
can provide oxygen, start an intravenous and perform
an electrocardiogram (ECG).
• Paramedics can also administer important medications in
the early minutes of a heart attack to lessen heart damage.
• During transport, EMS will also share information with
the hospital so definitive treatment can begin immediately on arrival.
• Take a CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) course.
Training is widely available from many reputable organizations. It’s easy, inexpensive, and only takes a few hours.
Know the signs of a heart attack
(Any or all of these signs and symptoms may occur)
• Chest pain described as crushing, squeezing, pressure
or chest heaviness
• Pain that moves beyond the chest such as shoulder,
arm, neck or jaw pain
• Shortness of breath, sweating or nausea and vomiting
Reduce your risk
Heart attack risk factors include:
• Obesity
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Smoking
• High cholesterol
• Age / Gender
• Family history
Speak with your doctor about how to treat your modifiable risk factors and learn to be heart safe.

Happy New Year from everyone in the 401 Woodcreek
Scout Group. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.
Our Beavers have been having a great time with all
of their activities. When the weather was very cold,
they headed to the gym at the South Fish Creek Recreation centre for lots of games and just plain running
and having fun. They also visited a senior’s lodge for
an evening of caroling to brighten everyone’s day. A
movie night rounded off their December schedule.
The Cubs had a great time learning and practicing archery. Popping balloons makes for lots of fun and lots
of noise. They have been working on earning many
badges as well as their Green Star which encompasses outdoor skills and activities. They each made their
own survival kits which they can use for many years
to come. They also have an evening of swimming
planned for January.
The Scouts have had lots of great activities. They had
an evening of 5 pin bowling at Mountainview Bowling. That is always a huge hit with the kids. They also
went swimming at the Southland leisure centre and
had a Christmas wind-up party. They are getting prepared for their annual winter camp the end of January
- camping in tents in January - sounds like fun!
The Venture group has been busy with their tree lot.
Thank you to everyone who bought their beautiful
Christmas trees.
Thanks to all our great leaders and volunteers who
work so hard to make a great program for the kids.
Also, thank you to the ongoing support we receive
from the Woodcreek Community Association and our
local Lions Club.

Commissioner, Carol Duncan at 403-281-4470.

In early January the Assessment Department mailed out
the 2014 Assessment Notices to property and business
owners in Calgary. We are currently in the Customer Review
Period, which ends on March 4th. If you have not already
done so, I encourage you to review your assessment notice
to ensure that the information it contains is accurate. The
Assessment Department can be reached via telephone at
403-268-2888.
Any inquiries received within the 2014 Customer Review
Period will be reviewed by an assessor, and appropriate action taken. This sometimes includes amending an assessment to ensure that it is accurate.
When reviewing your 2014 property assessment, please remember that under provincial legislation the value of your
property reflects the market value of the property on July 1,
2013 and the physical condition as of December 31, 2013.
For those whose homes were impacted by the June flood,
special considerations were required by the Assessment
Department. After the flood, Assessment staff worked to
identify and measure the flood’s impact on properties.
Based on this analysis, 1,939 properties have been identified as experiencing a market value reduction due to the
flood. The market value adjustments are reflected in the
2014 assessed values for these properties.
The business tax consolidation process continues in 2014
with 10 per cent of business tax revenues transferred to,
and collected through, the non-residential property tax.
This will result in a 10 per cent decrease to the 2014 business tax rate and an estimated 2.7 per cent increase to the
non-residential property tax rate. Incremental revenue
transfers will occur annually until 2019, culminating with
the elimination of the business tax.
I encourage constituents of Ward 11 to contact me and sign
up to received regular updates from my office, as I email
out information regarding upcoming events, City programs
and opportunities for input into the City’s public engagement programs that are relevant to Ward 11 residents. You
can sign up by emailing my office at [email protected]. I
also encourage you to visit my website, www.ward11calgary.ca, for additional information that may be of interest
