Elaine - Wilmslow Riding Club
We have now reached the end of our summer season, and what a
good year it has been. At the last show we even managed to finish
most of the classes before the rain started! I hope you and your
horse/pony have enjoyed yourselves, managed to get out to
everything and had lots of wins.
Our teams have done exceptionally well – qualifying for the Winter Championships at Hartpury, the
Royal Windsor Horse Show, the Horse Trials at the new venue of Swalecliffe and the Summer
Championships at Lincoln. One of the Horse Trials teams went on to win at Swalecliffe. What a
fantastic achievement. (More information on teams further on in the News Letter).
Tom Jordan, a valued member of Wilmslow Committee, has decided it is time to retire at the end of
this year. He has been on the Committee for fourteen years. Not
only the friendly face at the start of the Cross Countries but,
along with Larry Taylor, repairing and painting the fences during
the winter months. At the last show the Committee presented
him with an Acoustic Guitar – so next year we expect him to
come back and play for us – no pressure then Tom!
As you know we rely on our work party to make Events happen.
This year we have had several members who have completed
lots of extra days.
Kelly Burrage, despite being on crutches, has helped at the One
Day Event, Cross Country, Shows and Dressage events.
Ruth Holland Jones helped with the Club Ring and Stewarding the Ridden Showing ring. One of the
judges in the Ridden Showing ring was so impressed that she has taken Ruth with her to other shows
to steward.
Charlotte Miller who has helped at the Cross Country and One Day Events.
Darren Jessop who has helped with the Club ring.
Thank you all very much. Your help is very much appreciated.
The date for the Winter Indoor Show Jumping and the dates for the Winter Dressage competitions,
along with the tests and details are further on in the News Letter. It will be nice to see you at these
events. Please remember we do need help to run them so if you haven’t yet completed all your duty
day obligations have a look at the dates and contact Loulie Secker or myself [email protected]
and we will slot you in.
See you all soon.

URGENT REMINDER – It’s time to return the
trophies from last years Presentation Dance. Don’t
forget to have them engraved, if you haven’t already done so,
and then return them in the same condition as you received
them (clean) please. It takes many hours of elbow grease to
get them all gleaming so this would be a huge help. They can
be given to any Committee member as soon as possible and
most definitely before Christmas please. THANK YOU
The provisional final points for the season will be up on the
website soon for everyone to look at. Please check them carefully and if there are
any queries, just send an email and Chris will look into it as soon as he can. He
would like to be able to put the final points up by the end of October, so
arrangements can be finalised for the Presentation Dance. Remember that the
final points are dependent on you having completed your work party, should you
have to do one. If you still need to complete one, look at the Winter dates and
then contact Loulie to tell her your preferred dates. If you don’t then they may
well be allocated to you.
Wilmslow Riding
Club Presentation Evening.
Holiday Inn, Manchester Airport (previously Valley Lodge
Hotel) Saturday January 25th 2014. The booking form
will be emailed or sent out very soon, but make sure it’s
in your diary as tickets sell out quickly.
TEAMS
The Summer competitions have gone as planned this year. None of last years
swapping of dates or venues thank goodness.
In the horse trials held at Kelsall. The Junior 90cms. team of Abbi Norbury, Josie Lindley and Sammy Clare
tried hard, but were unfortunately unplaced. Sammy was later joined by Maia Hodgson, Imogen Sherry
and Charlotte Taylor to come 2nd in the junior 100 cms. with Maia winning her arena. The senior 90cms
team showed some positive riding and the team of Wendy Godfrey, Julie Wager, Kath Trueman and Robby
Gilsenan won the competition. As in previous years, we were able to field a team in the 100 cms, albeit
with only three in the team. However they relished the chance to get out and the team of Pip Wise, Suzi
Wise and Emma Tarry came 2nd. There was a new competition this year of a senior 80 cms. The team of
Helen Lees, Vicki Price, Hilary Secker and Robby Gilsenan finished in 5th place.
We headed to the new venue of Swalecliffe in Oxfordshire, for the Championships. Unfortunately, due to
lameness, we were not able to field our winning senior 90 cms. team. However, Julie Wager was joined by
Lesley Gould and Louise Feeney from Wilmslow and Laura Walkden from Longton, to make up an Area 3
team which went on to win the competition.
July heralded qualifying for the SJ and dressage championships at Lincoln. The show jumping qualifier was
held at Lakes R.C. where our 1 representative Pip Wise raised the flag for Wilmslow and won the senior
intermediate show jumping. At the dressage qualifier held at Rochdale R.C. the senior riding test team of
Caroline Broomhead, Lesley Gould, Hilary Secker and Kath Trueman won, with Caroline placed 1st in her
arena, Lesley placed 2nd in her arena and Kath 5th in hers and Pip and Suzi Wise won the senior pairs
dressage. Our novice dressage team of Suzi and Pip Wise, Hilary Secker and Helen Lees and the open
dressage team of Caroline Broomhead, Lesley Gould, Emma Tarry and Kath Trueman all rode well but
were just out of a qualifying place. However, Caroline qualified as an individual.
Lincoln Championships were, as usual, very well organised. Saturday saw the Seniors compete. Pip
jumped a lovely clear in the first round of the intermediate jumping, but a couple of poles down in the
second, meant she finished unplaced. However, our sole show jumper was a credit to Wilmslow R.C. The
riding test team had one change from the qualifying team when Suzi Wise stepped in to replace Kath
Trueman. There was very stiff opposition in this competition, but our team gave a good account of
themselves to finish in 11th position from 28, with Caroline finishing 6th in her arena and Hilary 9th in hers.
In the dressage, Caroline Broomhead, who had qualified as an individual, had a brilliant day to finish 2nd in
her arena on a young horse just beginning his career. Pip and Suzi Wise showed a good floor plan in their
pairs dressage but finished just outside the rosettes.
The championships this year saw a variety of people attending, for some this was their first experience and
we hope they enjoyed it enough to be back for more. For others this was a return trip and we hope they
enjoyed themselves every bit as much. I hope everyone had fun, made new friends and achieved a
performance they were pleased with. Most importantly, I hope everyone is up for another crack at the
Championships next year!
