satisfying to the soul than knowing you
made a difference in someone’s life? If
you’re looking for a way to get the great
feeling that comes with giving back,
block April 28th on your calendar.
Unlike some larger neighborhoods,
the residents in Cabbagetown share
a strong connection with each
other and their community. While
we may not agree on everything, we seem to stand on common
ground when it comes to looking out for each other.
We all know someone around the corner, or down the street,
who’s fallen on rough times at some point. Most of these
people quietly go about their business and live their lives;
never complaining, never asking for help, never wanting to
be a burden to someone else. They do the best they can with
what they have, and let go of the things they’re no longer able
to do. Fortunately, there are a lot of us who are willing and able
to make the world better for someone else, while stirring up
some good karma for ourselves.
On April 28th we’ll kick of the first “Cabbagetown Cares” day. If
you’re willing to flex some muscle and get dirty, meet us at the
Esther Peachy Lefevre Park at 9:00am. From there we’ll walk to
the work site. This is a yard project that involves at least one run
to the dump, so if you have a pick-up and you’re willing to haul,
please let us know in advance via email. Bring your gardening
tool of choice, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent. We’ll provide
the bottled water.
The recipient’s name and address will not be shared until the
actual event. A lot of us are uncomfortable receiving help – even
when it comes from the heart with no strings attached. In some
cases, it’s best to keep the spotlight pointed in another direction
in order to respect people’s dignity.
Hopefully this will be the first of many “Cabbagetown Cares”
days. If you have feedback or suggestions on where efforts
should be focused in the future, just drop an email:

David Thayer of Powell Street, the crabbiest bon vivant this
side of the Mississippi, turned 60 last month. To celebrate,
he threw a party at his American Gothic house, with the
usual mix of wealthy Buckhead patrons, homeless people,
and Mexican day laborers. Everyone had a good time, owing
to the fact that David’s partner, Richard, his chief rival in the
ornery sweepstakes, stayed in his room the whole time.
When I asked David to pose in a cone-shaped birthday hat
for this Society Page mention -- he told me to go *#%@
myself.
Good thing Judy Staples was more willing. She donned the
hat to pose for a photo celebrating her new profession as
a realtor. Judy has signed on with Adams Realtors and is
now eager to work with Cabbageheads on the dilapidated
clapboard structures they view as acceptable housing. She
moved to Cabbagetown in 1988, setting a record when she paid $50,000 for a house on Berean Avenue. Give Judy a call

Reed LaPlant and Holly Groom, arguably the most well-adjusted couple in Cabbagetown, will be welcoming their baby
any day now. Reed has been working day and night to get the nursery ready. They don’t know whether they’re having a
girl or a boy. But just in case their child fulfills their dreams of becoming an Appalachian rapper, they’re considering the
name “’Lil Cabbage.”

Cabbagetown Park Scores an Award!

Congratulations to Cabbagetown for having an award winning
park!
Cabbagetown Park was on display this month at the annual
Greenprints Conference, sponsored by the Southface Energy
Institute. Our park was selected by the American Institute of
Architects Committee on the Environment for display during their
weekend conference. Ecos Environmental Design, Inc. designed
Cabbagetown Park and submitted this design to the annual

Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects
awards jury, and it won an award for 2007! We will be getting a copy of the award to hang in our Community Center. Tova
Baruch, former President of Cabbagetown Initiative, and Ashley Derrick, the park’s former Executive Director, attended
the annual GaASLA awards dinner on Saturday March 10th where photos of the park were shown and Ecos accepted the
award.

Cabbage Recipe of the Month
Cabbagetown’s First Million Dollar Home
Serves 8
11/2cups mayo
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 teaspoons anchovy paste
2 cloves of garlic (minced)
1 medium head of Savoy or green cabbage (cored & thinly sliced)
6 scallions, white & green parts (thinly sliced)
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan
salt & pepper to taste
In large bowl, whisk together mayo,
lemon juice, anchovy paste and
garlic until smooth.
Add the cabbage & scallions. Mix
well.
Cover tightly and refrigerate for an
hour.
Just before serving, mix in cheese
and salt & pepper.
John Pinone likes to describe his 2 bedroom 1.5 bath home on Savannah
Street as a “fungalow”—part bungalow, all fun. In justifying the $1.2 million
dollar price tag he points to the newly installed hot tub on the back porch, trap
door beer cooler in the kitchen floor and the 52 inch plasma TV permanently
mounted in the master bedroom ceiling. In the second bedroom he plans to
leave behind the foosball table and the dart board although he admits that
things can get a little dicey should both games be played at the same time.
Says Pinone “Well, maybe they have rooms that size in Inman Park but that’s
why those houses go for $8 to $10 million.”
Asked what he plans to do with his windfall when the home sells Pinone is
quick to point out that he intends on staying in Cabbagetown: “Are you kidding
me? I bought this house for $105,000 two years ago. Where else in Atlanta can
you get that kind of return on investment? I mean, people know me as kind of
party guy but I’m a businessman too. There are a couple of churches around
here that could be re-done like an ESPN Zone or something like that.”
In other neighborhood news, city officials plan on making Kirkwood Avenue a
three lane artery akin to Dekalb avenue with two lanes of traffic flowing into the
city during morning rush hour and switching to outbound during the commute
home. Reached for comment via fax, city planner Marco Baldi stated:
“When we switched Kirkwood from a one-way street to a two-way street last
month it was very well received because most drivers were treating it that
way already. This adjustment provides an alternative to Dekalb Avenue for
city commuters—at least until you dead end into Powell Street—but we’re
working on that as well.”

Krog Entrance Mural

At the upcoming CNIA meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to hear about a
proposed mural for the entrance to the Krog Tunnel. After the presentation,
attendees will vote on whether or not to go forward with this project..
If approved, the mural will be done in conjunction with the Hands On Atlanta
mural project that encompasses the entire wall bordering Wylie/Tennelle.
A vote will also be taken on a landscape plan for the entry triangles at the
tunnel.

Now that we have our beautiful park, the Cabbagetown Cooperative Preschool project is moving right along, and our
Community Center is getting a much needed makeover (stay tuned for news on the Grand Unveiling) the Cabbagetown
Initiative is looking for direction from you, our creative and community driven neighbors, to find our next undertaking.
The Cabbagetown Initiative was created to repond to and achieve our neighborhood’s dreams and desires. So what’s
it going to be Cabbagetown? We’re looking for inspiration and advice on what our next community project should
be. Please come to the next neighborhood CNIA meeting and share with us what you think the new direction of the
Cabbagetown Initiative should be in 2007.
I really feel the need to run this again, because of my observations of the world
around me. More people need to switch and spread the word. Green Ways

Have you ever heard of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs. For lights you use regularly
for long periods of time, they are worth the investments. Use them inside or out,
as bug lights or flood lights. Just make sure you read the package to get the right
temperature. Cool, neutral or warm.

• Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.
• Save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime
• Generate 70 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.
• In addition to other quality requirements, must turn on instantly, produce no sound, and fall within a warm color range or be otherwise labeled as providing cooler color tones.
• Are available in different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, for indoors and outdoors.

29th Annual Home Show
29th Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show, April 12-15 at the Georgia World Congress Center, will feature celebrity designer
and native Louisianan Kenneth Brown, on Thursday, April 12.
