LET’S PLAY BALL!
Downers Grove Dragons is a travel baseball team. We play
on the team. This is our team. They formed the team in
2007. Guys have been playing together since they were 6,
just like Alex and Will.
Wolfpack is another
Downers Grove Team.
Nevan Cremascoli plays
on it. It’s been a team
since 1988. Downers
Grove Wolfpack has
only teams for 4th through 8th
grade. Downers Grove is a great place to
play sports!

We know everything
from the trapdoor in
the library, to the vault
next to the sweets table in the teachers
lounge! Have you ever wondered what’s
in the trapdoor by the fiction section in
the Library? Gold, jewels, and treasure
galore? Well, it’s not exactly that. Okay, nothing like that. But
the details are still pretty cool. The trapdoor has dust, and a lot of mysterious
rust. Considering the insulation pipes that run all around the school are pretty
sturdy and were almost positive that there are no leaks in those pipes. But
before you stop reading this we would like to remind you that there are some
mysterious items down there like a light bulb, and even some sort of
paperback manual. That’s what under the trapdoor in the library.
Have you ever wondered what is in the teachers lounge? Well we did
see a sneak peek of that forbidden teachers lounge, but our main priority was
the trapdoor. As you may have noticed our school (the best school) has a lot
of trapdoors, 2 to be exact. Okay back on track. This trapdoor has a lot of
dust, rust and insolation pipes. It is made of concrete and has no stairs to lead
into it. The trapdoor is the end of the long passage that goes around the
school. If it wasn’t for Ms. Maria we wouldn’t have been able to find out all
these interesting facts! So we all thank you Ms. Maria!

Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a fun place to be! Mrs.
Plepel says that if she wants to know if the
class is paying attention, she looks at their
faces. Their favorite subject is math. They
like their guided math groups. Mrs. Plepel
became a

Grade 1
Lots of things are happening in
Miss P.‘s classroom. They are
working on position numbers in
math. Her favorite food is
cheeseburgers! She likes to
teach reading best. Her
students’ favorite subject is
math because they play a lot of
games. They are going to see a
Grade 1/2
Mrs. Richards has only taught at Whittier school
and loves the season fall. As we all know, Mrs.
Richards is a huge Blackhawks fan. Her favorite
player is Patrick Sharp. Besides first and second
grade, Mrs. Richards has also taught third grade
for ten years. The best thing that happened to
Mrs. Richards in her teaching career is when her
students came to her wedding. Mrs. Richards’
favorite subject to teach is reading, and her
favorite hobby is reading, too. The second graders
are learning to write at a good level, and they are
also working on cursive, which they really like. The
first graders are also learning how to add pizzazz
and learning how to write a hamburger paragraph.
Mrs. Richards favorite subject is Reading and her
favorite food is pizza. Overall Mrs. Richards is
awesome at teaching 1st and 2nd grade!
Grade 2
In second grade, some stuff is happening. In Math,
they are studying metric measurement. In school,
they did a estimation station field trip. In Science,
they are doing health and wellness. On their iPads
they’re studying penguins and reading Mr.
Poppers penguins. We then
asked stuff about Mr. Swade.
Grade 3
Here’s the scoop on Mrs.
Berg’s class. In math they’re
learning about multiplication.
In social studies they’re
learning about lots of different
cultures. For fun there learning about kids blog.
Yay what fun! When Mrs. Berg was in high school,
she got the first grand slam on the
softball/baseball field. Her kids are Lily in
5th grade and Riley in 2nd grade both girls
yes! Her real name is Jenny and her
favorite color is green. She was born in
(Gasp) 1974 so she is 39 (wow!). Her fear
is bugs. When Mrs. Berg was little she
collected little cow statues. Her dream is
to live in Italy one day. Also her favorite
play in May. Miss P. was born December 29,
1986. She is excited for the Variety Show. She
said it’s always fun to watch. Her favorite
animal is a giraffe. She likes to hang out with
her friends and family when she is not
teaching. Miss P. lives in Naperville. She said
her students are good, so no trouble makers! I
hope you liked our article. Bye for
now!!!
~Morgan Lazarz &Caroline Scott
Miss Picone also teaches the 1st
and 2nd graders. Before Ms.
Picone taught at Whittier she
taught at Summer School and
Westview Hills and Brook Forest.
Just like Mrs. Richards, Ms.
Picone’s favorite subject is
Reading. Ms. Picone also likes to
do gymnastics. Her favorite
Chicago sports team is the Chicago Black Hawks.
Ms. Picone teaches 1st grade Reading and 2nd
grade Social Studies. She also helps out in other
places in her classroom. Miss Picone’s favorite
flavor of ice cream is chocolate. Out of all the
grades, her favorite grades are... ALL OF THEM!!!
Finally we asked Ms.Picone what her favorite thing
at Whittier was she said... “All the nice, great and
wonderful people she gets to meet everyday”.
~ Leah Edelman, Lindsey Hilt & Sara Sheikh
His favorite color is blue.
His favorite subject is
Science, and his favorite
movie is Cars. That is whats
happening in 2nd Grade.
~Grace Cleary, Jacob
Zambreno & Patrick
Jackson
junk food is Oreo cookies. Her
favorite subject is reading. She
loved softball. Her last name used
to be Crow. Now, Ms. Mellish is
our teacher! We are very lucky, but
we do miss Mrs. Sciacca!
Now on to Ms. Stern. In science
they are working on states of
matter. They have the best
day of the year coming up for them, and it’s
not Christmas it’s THE POLAR EXPRESS
DAY!!!!!!!!. Mrs. Stern is young she’s only 30
years old. She’s does miss her last years
class, but she loves her new one. They get
to pick their own book in reading (how
lucky). Ms. Stern’s real name is Kara.

Grade 5
In Miss Vanacora’s room the classroom
authors are Jean Craighead George and
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Also, they started a
behavior chart called the Class Dojo. Class
Dojo is an app, and a student gets to mark other
students good or bad. Every week there is a new
dojo person. An up-coming Science event will be
cow eyes. They will be dissecting cows eyes in
January! Some people might think it is gross, some
might think it is cool. Miss Vanacora has about 30
Taz characters in her room. Word Power is the way
5th grade does spelling. It includes spelling and
grammar. Miss Vanacora likes both the smart
board and the dry erase board. If she wanted to
project a page in our books, she says its easier to
use the smart board.
Mrs. Lyons has a table called “Mexico”. It was
created by Brice Sheets last year. In math they
are going to be doing ratios, after they multiply
and divide fractions. They also just finished
doing “Math Ops.” That is a timed practice
math sheet which they do everyday and record
on a graph. Both 5th grade classes made
cinnamon ornaments and picture frames for
their parents. There has never been a week where the raffometer
has not moved. Mrs. Lyons reads books to her class. She is
reading, THINGS NOT SEEN by Andrew Clements right now. In
Social Studies, they are learning about the explorers. Soon they will
be learning about the English settlements and colonies. They will
also be celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

O Christmas Tree
O Christmas Tree
Did you know Christmas trees remove dust and
pollen from the air? GOOD!
Did you know recycled trees have been used to
make sand and soil erosion barriers and have
been placed in ponds for fish shelter? YAY!
Did you know Christmas trees grow in all 50 states?
GOOD!
Did you know it takes about 15 years to fully grow a
Christmas tree? WOW!
Did you know that Christmas trees were
traditionally decorated with edibles such as
apples, nuts, or other foods? YUM!
Did you know the custom of the Christmas tree
started in early modern Germany? COOL!
Did you know in the 18th century it began
illuminated by candles? WOW!
Did you know that the Christmas tree has also been
know as the Yule-tree especially in discussion of

Riding on Ryno
Ryno, unlike most vehicles, is one of very few types of
one wheeled motorcycles. This small, sleek vehicle
looks like it came out of a futuristic movie set. It
comes in different colors such as orange and red. It
was made to make personal transportation easy and
fun. I have to admit, it’s pretty cool!
Another cool feature Ryno has is the fact that it has no
throttle! It uses advanced technology to sense when
you move. When you lean forward it speeds up. When
you lean back it
slows down. On the
down side it only
goes 10 miles per
hour.
Believe it or not
another kind of one
wheeled motorcycle
was made in 1931.
It had a top speed of 93 miles per hour. It had a wheel
that was taller than the seat. Let’s hope Ryno will be
more successful than this one!
Student Council
News
Last month in Student Council they did many fundraisers and
activities. They donated to many organizations such as Pads,
The Humane Society, Toys For Tots, and Paws. On
Wednesday, December 11, we had our Holiday Hop featuring
Coach Josh. We would like to thank everyone who donated
canned foods and mittens to The Pads Food Drive. The
money and pet food from the Holiday Hop went to the
Humane Society and Paws. At the Student Council meetings
the first thing that they do is come in to Mrs. Zagorski’s room
and the Student Council representatives eat lunch with their
buddy from first through fourth grade. After that they get an
agenda and talk about up coming events. Then they take
votes on what they want to do at the events. Finally, they go
to their buddy and tell them what to say to their class. The
Student Council did many great activities in the month of
December and they hope to keep it up!

That night the wind whistled through the
air.
The world seemed to pause.
The birds were silent.
The sky was the color of the dark waves.
The trees blew in the wind.
That night the air was cold.
The grass was wet with dew.
The faint light of the moon glittered.
Everything was silent.
That night the world was at peace.
