SOME USEFUL TIPS

Bath time
C
R
Bath time for babies, especially during the first months of life, is a time
when they can relax and make new discoveries; it is also a moment of
precious bonding for both mothers and babies.
There are no precise rules regarding bath-times but here are some useful
tips:
FI
• the ideal time to bathe babies is just before their evening feed as the
soothing caresses by their parents relaxes them before going to sleep;
• the recommended time babies should spend in the bath is 2-3 minutes
for newborns, who are still very sensitive to the cold; as months go by
this time should not exceed 10-15 minutes to prevent skin maceration
caused by too much time in the water;
• the ideal bathwater temperature is 36/37°C, whilst the ideal room
temperature is around 25/26 °C;
• newborn babies must be lowered gradually into the water, resting
on your forearm with your hand firmly under his shoulders and arm so
his head cannot go under the water. Your other hand is now free to wash
his face, neck, chest, genitals, legs and feet;
• the same cleanser can be used for the skin and hair of newborns; later
on it is recommended to use a specific shampoo which removes dirt
without altering the hydrolipidic balance of the skin;
• when you have finished, wrap the baby in a soft towel and pat him dry
carefully, making sure you don’t miss the hidden areas such as his
armpits, fingers and groin area;
• during the first few months after birth, it is recommended to bathe
your baby once a day or every other day; from month 3 onwards 2/3
baths a week are sufficient;
• never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a few seconds, and
it is highly recommended to use shaped baby baths.
The skin of newborn babies does not get as dirty as that of older children,
but it is more likely for milk or baby food residue to remain between their
fingers or the folds of the skin. It is important to use a suitable cleansing
product (water alone is not sufficient) which removes the dirt without
altering the physiological and structural balance of their delicate skin.
As the months go by, bath-time becomes an entertaining part of the day
for babies, but it is also important from a hygiene point of view when they
start to crawl, walk and run which causes perspiration. Their skin is still
very delicate and can get sore and irritated very easily; it is important
to always use specific and gentle baby cleaners.

Not just a simple bath
After bathing your baby you can take advantage to give him a massage.
This close contact with his mother or father and the loving care he receives
will boost the baby-parent bonding process. This pleasant ritual combines
cuddles and skin care when you massage your baby with moisturising
products.
To moisturise your baby’s skin use a light fluid milk with softening
properties that respect the delicate skins of babies. Massage the baby’s
skin when he is naked and use gentle, slow and rhythmic movements.
If the skin is particularly dry and sensitive, use a nourishing cream that
protects the hydrolipidic film of your baby’s skin. For his face and other
parts of the skin exposed to atmospheric agents it is recommended
to use a rich barrier-effect cream.

Baby Changing
During the first few months a baby’s skin is still very thin, only half as thick
as that if an adult; this is why it is so sensitive to external agents.
Babies therefore often suffer from rashes and irritation of the skin,
especially in the diaper area, and especially from the age of three to
twelve months.
This can be a normal irritation or develop into bright red patches, with a
smooth and shiny surface, that cover a baby’s bottom, genitals and even
the inner thighs.
The cause is mainly the prolonged contact of the skin with the organic
residues combined with the maceration and occlusive action of the diaper,
plus the mechanical friction as the baby moves around.
During the weaning phase these phenomena can become more evident
due to the change from a diet based on milk to one which introduces new
foods and hence changes the formation of the faeces.
To try and prevent the onset of this disorder, it is recommended to follow
some simple rules when changing your baby:
• change the baby often so his bottom is always clean and dry;
• allow the baby to remain without a diaper for as long as possible so his
skin has time to breathe;
• wash the baby’s skin every time you change him with lukewarm water
and a delicate cleanser or use the specific cleansing wipes;
• do not use sponges to clean babies as they can retain bacteria and dirt;
in particular when cleansing baby girls you should always start at the front
and cleanse backwards; this is essential to prevent bringing bacteria and
impurities towards the genital area;
• carefully and gently pat dry the baby’s bottom and all the skin folds
without rubbing harshly;
• after cleaning and drying the baby, apply a layer or protective and
moisturising zinc ointment to soothe any irritation and prevent any
irritating substances from coming into contact with the skin.
Ask your paediatrician for advice if any particularly bothersome irritation
should appear.
