Timing, preparation & target audience…
I was supposed to write the letter from the editor
as always, but after that presentation about international
projects in our school on Wednesday I must react to this
and postpone other stuff to the next issue.
First of all, our grade 13 was supposed to have
a class lesson and talk about our Graduation Ball that is
coming in just a few weeks. It is not only some irrelevant ball for our grade, it is also very important event for
our school as a whole, where we present those people
that soon will leave and represent ISO around the world.
However, instead of giving us that needed time to manage important things for the ball we were forced to sit
in the library… But what for? Our grade 13 cannot even
participate in those projects (China&Israel) because we
have Maturita. For these facts I really do not see any rational reasons for us to be there instead of solving other
school-concerned stuff.
Secondly, I understand that international projects
are crucial for our school and that they are one of the best
experiences that you can get on high school (I know that
from my own experience). However, the presentations
should have been far more interesting and prepared.
You cannot convince bunch of teenagers to participate in
those projects by telling them naively-basic information
about those countries that everybody knows from geography lessons. I remember when my friend said “If I did
a presentation like this about China, I would get zero...”
– so you really cannot expect that with presentations like
these you will convince our young students to go.
If you need to encourage our students and you
want to convince them to participate in such an important projects, you should go from class to class perhaps.
Make those presentations more interesting and interactive and you should stress only relevant information (not
that people eat duck in China). I am sure that more students would understand what are you trying to say and
how much you are trying to emphasize the awesome experience that is involved in these projects.
Hereby I beg organizers of those school events to
exclude grade 13 from all future events so that we do
not have to waste our time and, at the same time, I want
to stress the importance of delivering a good presentation (especially concerning key topics like international
projects in our school) so that those young students can
truly understand your message – timing, preparation
and target audience are indispensable aspects of success
here.

When you get to grade 12, you all have to buy the OBJECTIVE IELTS
book for English lessons. From what I know, some of you are despressed and angry that you have to study from that bluish book –
what for? Why do we prepare so long for one stupid exam? I admit
that if you want to go to university in the Czech Republic it’s useless.
But if you think of studying abroad, it’s really worth the price.
I spent some year and half with that book and then I tried the IELTS
for real. Without any extra preparation I was able to write it very well
(very well- editor’s note). We tried so many tests in the lessons that
it was impossible not to get used to the IELTS style. And the real test
was actually much easier than some of the things we were doing at
school! So don‘t be desperate from all the lousy listening and repulsive reading sections. It’s gonna prepare you well!

TEACHER TO STUDENTS
Greetings fellow ISOers,
Big changes are afoot for me--I’m moving to New Zealand in a few short weeks
to join my newly-minted husband, Honza. This is a pretty radical step for me,
as I have decided to move for love and
nothing else. I currently don’t have a
job lined up and I expect it will take a
few months to settle in, but once I have
found gainful employment (or once I’ve
had a crazy adventure you’d appreciate hearing about), I promise to report
back.
In New Zealand, I look forward to being able to improve my Czech. (Yes, you
read that right.) Here in Ostrava, I seldom speak anything but English, but I
am expecting that Czech will be an awesome private language between Honza
and me in Auckland. Well, that may not
be strictly true, as Honza has met a community of Czech expatriates. Of course,
I’m also looking forward to being in an
English-speaking country again. The
first thing I’m going to do is get a library
card! I can’t wait to read, read, read to
my heart’s content :-).
It’s pretty easy to look forward, but I
also find myself looking back. In the 6
years I have been in Ostrava, I have been part of a terrific school community and I have met some amazing,
inspiring young people. (I’m talking about YOU, reader!) I have really loved sponsoring the MUN club and
I’ve had great fun in the classroom. (Yes, sometimes I’ve thought I wanted to kill a student. It happens. I
think a few students have wanted to kill ME. But we all survived!) I didn’t make the decision to leave lightly,
and I am very sorry that I will not be here for the Maturita and graduation of grade 13. I will be with you in
spirit, and I will be perusing your photos on Facebook. (So if they’re really really private . . . check whether
you meant to share them or not ;-).)
The best thing about marrying a Czech person is that I now have ties to the Czech Republic--I will always
have a reason to visit. Honza and I are making tentative plans to be in Ostrava in December 2012. I hope
very much to see you all then and look forward to hearing from you in the meantime.

Greetings to the readers of the Nothing
magazine!
New Mexico is a gorgeous state and my school is an
unusual place. Coming here from Ostrava was quite
a change. Before you even go to your first class you
notice the elevation. Our campus lies at around
2200m above the sea level. That means you’re out
of breath every time you walk up the stairs, and my
first soccer game was a sheer pain. A single run after a ball makes you feel like you’ve just finished a
marathon.
The biggest change is that there’s no teaching here as I was used to it from the Czech Republic.
We don’t have lectures, tests, and apart from the final grade on your transcript, we are not even graded during the year! You may now be asking yourself,
how can that be difficult? It sounds like a cakewalk!
But it’s not.
We read works from authors from many different fields, many of whom are considered to be
some of the most influential thinkers that have ever
lived. Whether it’s Plato, Einstein, Darwin, Nietzsche,
or any other author, you must read what they have
to say, think about it hard, and try to understand
it, even if you’re not familiar with the subject that
they write on. That is exactly what makes the program at our school challenging. The main stress is
on experiencing the ideas from subjects through
careful reading, discussions in classes, and thinking.
Well, that is how I mostly spend my time

here, reading a lot of philosophy, learning French,
doing math and physics. Eventually I will earn my
degree in two majors: philosophy and history of science and mathematics.
If you have really been going crazy from the
workload, there’s always some weekend event to
make you do something else than school related
stuff. These are traditional parties, concerts, gambling night, swing dancing nights or other events
held on campus every year such as a huge end-ofthe-year party with live music, a lot of food, and local beer.

difficult for the teachers to arrange the individual
meetings with every single student who missed
the test. It always happened that somebody didn’t
come for the arranged test date; or that somebody
couldn’t write the tests properly because he/she
was interrupted by the classmates
in the lesson. It is therefore no
surprise that the intrepid leaders
of our school decided to create a
special way of testing those who
couldn’t attend the regular lessons. The idea was created on the
regular teachers’ meeting and it is
probably impossible to find out who came up with
this idea first. The truth is that most of the teachers were exhausted from the endless planning with
irresponsible students (let’s be honest, most of us
ARE irresponsible). Organizing the principal’s week
seemed to be an efficient way of managing the situation and was supposed to reduce the number of
students who miss the tests. Was it helpful? Form
your own opinion...
Principal’s tests: they seem to be poisoning students‘peaceful lives since the dawn of time.
We wanted to open this can of worms, talk to the
management and reveal the truth about their beginnings. We were really negatively surprised when
we didn’t receive the answers! It
seems that those responsible for
principal’s tests are unwilling or
unable to communicate with us.
Anyway, we interviewed an alternative source and here is what we
have found out.
Principal’s tests haven’t always been in ISO. Some of us can still remember
the happy times before their creation, when you
could write the test that you have missed right in
the following lesson – and it was the same as the
one your classmates have written. However, students are ingenious creatures and invented a way
of... let’s say... making their life easier by cooperating on the tests, making photocopies, skipping
particular classes, and sharing knowledge that they
shouldn’t have shared. Moreover, it was extremely

We can just offer you the opinions of some teachers and students:
Teachers’ views:
Mr.Aparicio:
It depends on the students, how they do
on the tests. It’s good that they have the
opportunity to make up their grade. But
it’s not so good when the students leave
everything for the last day – their expectations for the principal’s day is very
slim, because they have so many tests.
But it’s a good opportunity for those
people who couldn’t be present for the
particular test in the lesson, so in general, I like the idea of having the principal’s week.
Mr. Corkill:
I think they are good idea for two reasons – the first is that it forces the
students to manage their time better; the second reason is that when
you see how many students miss the tests, it’s too difficult to do it in
another way. We used to do it with students in their free periods but it
was messy and disorganized.

Students’ views:
We asked two students about their opinions. One of the students usually doesn’t
have to write anything during the PW,
whereas the other one is always overwhelmed by the number of tests on the
list.
Student 1:
I try my best not to miss a test, to avoid the stressful week in January when
I would have to wake up at 5 am and leave the school at 4pm and study for
three tests a day... It sometimes happens that I cannot come to write the
test, but I really try to avoid it because I know that the grade would not be as good as it would have been
if I have written it in normal lesson.
Student 2:
I lose track of things. I always think I have just few PT and that I can miss another one... and then I find
out that there are like 12 of them! The trouble is that I am usually busy and I have thousands of things
to do. Sometimes I forget to study for the test and so I rather postpone it to the principal’s week – even
though I know it will be even worse!
CONCLUSION?? PT would be OK if students could manage their time effectively and if they knew whether
it is worth to skip the test or not. But in reality it just doesn’t
work. Look at the lists on the PT board – doesn’t it seem to
you that the number of tests is increasing?

Mr. Hollander:
I think it’s good only in certain cases: when students keep repeating not coming to the tests. Only in this
matter it is effective. Otherwise I don’t like it so much, because sometimes there is a good reason why
a student couldn’t come to write the test – and if it is not repeated more than once, it can be excused. I
think we should check the PT statistically and see if the principal’s week
really works - reducing the number of students who don’t write the test
on time. If it is effective in this matter, then I am for it. If not, we need to
find another way to decrease absenteeism during exams.

together? Yes! It
is possible in the
Aréna Chamber
Theatre (Komorní scéna Aréna) in Ostrava! We visited this amazing place and interviewed for you the
director of the theatre – Mrs Renáta Huserová! She
is very kind person. She showed us the whole place
inside. We visited the foyer, auditorium, and even
the backstage!
Aréna Chamber Theatre originated from the
“Theatre of Music” (Divadlo hudby) which was established in 1951 and it was located on the Masaryk
square. At that time it was very good place to listen
to music, because people did not have many opportunities to listen to the high-quality music at home.
After the revolution in 1989, the Theatre of Music
lost its attraction to people. Then, there started a
new era of the theatre. Their own dramatic ensemble started to play only drama. The theatre was renamed as “Aréna Chamber Theatre” and there came
a new director – Renáta Huserová, who has led the
theatre until now. In 2005 the theatre moved on a
new place – near the Ostrava City Library nearby
the river Ostravice and the Miloš Sýkora’s bridge.
“Our aim was to make arena-shaped auditorium”
My first question for Mrs Huserová
was, how did originate the name of
the theatre. “Our aim was to make
arena-shaped auditorium, like in
amphitheatres. Actors play on
the circle ground and around the
ground is stairs-like auditorium.
People watch the performance
from above like in a cinema.” She
said. But because of the backstage there is only halfcircled auditorium. ,,When we have performances
which do not need too much of space and there are
so many people, we can put some chairs around to
complete the arena shape.”

“The Year of New Hopes” in Aréna!
I was also interested how the preparation of
a performance looks. “The preparation takes very
long time. At first, the literary manager and the
head of the art choose scripts of performances for
the next season. It depends on the number of actors, but also on the actual theme of toady’s life.
Then, the literary manager discuss with the stage
manager about the performance. One production
is preparing for about
two months. Then the
rehearsals begin. From
the first rehearsal it is
about 6-8 weeks to the
premiere. We usually
introduce four our own
performances per season.” Every season in
the theatre lasts ten months. This season is called
“Rok nových nadějí” (The Year of New Hopes) and
it is built-up from four Czech theatre premieres.
And one part of is their own performance called “S
nadějí I bez ní” (With and Without Hope). “It is our
own performance, which had a premiere on 21st
January 2012, so that means that it was world premiere.” She said.
“We travel on some festivals to Prague, but also to
the other countries.”
“The hardest performance has been probably Hamlet. Not every theatre can introduce Hamlet, because only few actors will attain to the main role
of Hamlet. That must be great actor in quite young
age.” Michal Čapka had the honour to play the main role of Hamlet in the theatre Aréna. Even, he
got very prestigious Czech prize of
Thálie for the “Young drama-player
under 33 years” in 2007. “We travel with our actors on some festivals
to Prague, but also to the other
countries. Last summer, our dramatic ensemble went to Sopot, in the north coast
of Poland, on the Festival of Jewish Culture. We performed there our performance Jubileum, which was
directed by polish stage manager.” She said.
“Which one of the performances in the theatre
Aréna could you recommend to us?”
“Well, it depends on a concrete person. For example, I like the performance “Brenpartija”. That
is typical kind of performance when you laugh a
lot, but you know that you should not lough, because that is real story. It is a performance about the
homeless in 1920s. It is very strong, but nice performance. You know that homeless are today too. But
thanks to this performance, it is easier to accept the
reality and live with it, because I can laugh at things
which are wrong and which should be better.”
At the end,
I would like to say
that this was really
great experience
for me. And my aim
is to make this, relatively small, theatre more popular
at our school. And
not only because of their performances, but also
because of their exhibitions of nice pictures!

“My teacher has always thought that I will work in
culture”
I also asked her how she started with her job. “Well,
my teacher from the primary school has always
thought that I will work in culture one day, because
I used to go on declamatory competitions many
times.” She laughs. “Many years later, I started to
work in Ostrava City Cultural Centre. I used to bring
many bands, orchestras and theatres to Ostrava.
Thanks to that, I could see many possibilities from
my point of view. And then, I started to work in Aréna Chamber Theatre. It influenced my life, because
I can’t imagine that I would live without this job. I
like it.”
It is interesting that since the first moment
we came, we knew that the director really loves her
job, because every part of the theatre is greatly designed… even toilets are funny designed!
“Our theatre will be on TV…”
“This year, our theatre celebrates 18th birthday
with the new name, so we are ‘adults’. Thanks to it,
there came cameramans to do a report. It will be on
TV on 4th February 2012 at 11:20 on ČT2 and it is a
programme called “Divadlo žije!”
And the last question for Mrs Huserová was:

La Petite Conversation
One day I was walking from school to the tram station. I didn’t want to go the usual way, so I decided
to change my route. And on my way to the station,
I noticed a very little sign that said La Petite Conversation. This didn’t mean anything to me since I was
walking there for the first time. I went there and I
was amazed. This establishment has got style and it
is a coffee place, an ideal place to start a morning.
They serve coffee and sandwiches, which are delicious. From the title of the restaurant, this place is
French. So if you study French at school, you can
go there. They even speak French there and you
are free to join the people who speak that beautiful language. For all non-smokers I have good news.
It’s a strictly non-smoking place, so you won’t be
annoyed by that terrible smell. Plus the prices respond to the quality. Another advantage is that this
coffee place is near school, so you can go there either in the morning before school, or after school.
But guys, who wouldn’t start a morning without a
coffee and a sandwich…At least I wouldn’t. But I am
an exemplary student, so I can’t go there. :D, but
if you start school at 9 or at 10, this is the place to
go. They open from 8 o’clock. I would give this establishment a 90percent grade, which means that
I was satisfied. You can find this place before the
Stodolni tram station. You walk from Husuv Sad to
the right and on you left side, you will see a little
sign with the name. Good Luck and I strongly suggest you to try it.

it was a great experience for me! I liked
the way she teached us and her attitude

miss the least? Well, presentations…

done, but this prepared us for communication….I hope
she will have a great time in New Zealand and she will
keep in touch with ISO :)... by the way who is going to

TRUE STORY:
The can opener was invented 48 years after the can.
It goes without question that Gitana’s departure is
going to hit the school’s life, not only because she has
been with us almost since we started the school. It is
hard to put into words how much she has contributed
to the school, especially to the EL Department’s work
and structure. It is absolutely inarguable it was her
who set up high standards for teaching and subsequent
testing of English, which led to increasing of the level
of English at all other departments. She influenced all
other teachers with incredible level of professionalism.
Unforgettable will be her dedication to pushing her students to strive for excellence, the ISOMUN Club which
she founded and brought to so many interesting places
in Europe and Asia. We were really lucky to have her on
our team. Gitana set the standard very high, and I know
that I will miss her for that.
And what I could I possibly miss the least? Probably
certain voices whispering in complaint that she can be
too tough and TOO American in her insistence on creating, and sticking to, THE RULES. Though I know well
that silencing those whispers means our school will
need to find a new leader to push the others striving
for excellence.

that it seems like all my friends now have new
boyfriends and all are gonna have someone
to dance with on the Graduation Ball. I don’t
wanna end up alone sitting on my chair and
not dance at all. What shall I do? Shall I try to

My PC is really old and it is just terrible. From time to
time its system gets that rotten that everytime when I
press any button on the keyboard the system thinks I
clicked on the mouse the right button - so it is absolutely
impossible to write anything when that happens. What
is more, it really makes my studying and writing my essays more difficult - almost impossible. But the worst
part is that I am too lazy to get the PC repaired - so that
means that the impossibility of studying will last forever.

So you have a slow PC. What do you think Moses did?
“Please, God, can you talk slower as my PC is slow?” If
it was down to you, it would not be the Ten Commandments, but Five, ‘cos my PC is slow! Get a life! You don’t
need a PC, especially to get the Maturita. All you need
is… ? I really don’t know what you need to get Maturita.
Maybe a rich dad? I am sure you will pass; my pet cat,
Reggie, got his Maturita last year and he doesn’t complain!!

YES, I run the world
Hi sweeties, I’m back!
eating! During the whole concert, all the people
were sitting and eating. Not that they were not
singing, they did not even stand up! Whenever she
showed us to put our hands up, it was only me and
my friend who followed her. Then we saw a guy,
who was sleeping. I don’t get how somebody can
fall asleep at a concert. Weird. Yeah, so me and the
other girl were the only ones dancing and singing
and actually enjoying the whole thing.
Last month, me and my friend went to see Rihanna’s concert, which was by the way amazing. However, what surprised me the most about the whole
thing were the people.
So, at 7 p.m., when there was a big crowd waiting in
line in front of the enormous building, screaming as
loud as possible whenever Riri or whoever passed
by. When we finally got in after they searched us, Yes it was incredible <3
we were super excited. It was only a few minutes
to 8 p.m., so we bought ourselves two drinks and So glad to make a comment
headed to our seats. We had to stand up like 10
times so people with their food could get to their
seats. When the concert started, the people kept
