from the president
March will be memorable for many reasons. Downton Abbey
has been the top PBS drama of all time, with an impact on popular
culture achieved by few television series. Here in the Pacific
Northwest, we’ve consistently garnered the highest ratings in the
U.S. for Downton Abbey. Mark your calendars for BAFTA Celebrates
Downton Abbey, airing March 6 at 8:00 p.m. followed at 9:00 p.m.
by the Downton Abbey finale, when all the storylines come together
one final, scintillating time.
The fourth and final season of Mr. Selfridge—about the charismatic
American entrepreneur who left his mark on Britain’s retail
culture—premieres March 27. I’m also looking forward to the
premiere of Grantchester Season 2 that same evening; The Seattle
Times referred to the popular series’ first season as “heaven for
mystery fans.” If space exploration is your passion, you’ll enjoy
Space Men: American Experience (3/1), A Year in Space (3/2) and
Cosmonauts (3/2), the story of the earliest Soviet space explorers.
From the fictional adventures of the Crawley family to the real-life
adventures of space pioneers, great programs on public television
wouldn't be possible without your support. Thank you!

Irish Soda Bread PAULA NEMZEK for KCTS 9 COOKS
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day this month, we offer our take on a traditional Irish Soda Bread.
2V cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
V teaspoon salt
B⁄d cup cold, unsalted butter, cut into small dice
1W cups buttermilk
V cup currants
Heat the oven to 375 degrees and grease a large
baking sheet. Combine the first six ingredients in a
bowl; cut in the butter until the mixture resembles
coarse crumbs. Add the buttermilk and currants,
and stir just until moistened. The dough will be
wet and sticky.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface;
knead gently about 10 times and shape into a ball.
Place on the greased baking sheet and pat down
into a 6-inch circle. Cut an “X” in the top of the
dough with a sharp knife dipped in flour.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown,
and serve warm. This recipe may be doubled.

The Secret of Crickley Hall
Sunday, March 20 | 8–11p
A year after their little boy goes
missing, Gabe Caleigh and his wife
take their daughters to Crickley Hall
to try and escape the past. The large,
rambling house seems like the
perfect place for a fresh start—
until doors start to open of their
own accord and unseen children
can be heard crying in the night.
