San Antonio accomplishes mission ¡Hasta

San Antonio has reached a
historic milestone in the fight
to end veteran homelessness.
Mayor Ivy Taylor announced
Friday morning that the City of
San Antonio, with the help of
other community members, has
met the objectives of the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran
Homelessness by successfully
placing more than 1,335 homeless veterans into permanent
housing.
On hand to celebrate the
success included U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) Secretary
Julián Castro, City Manager
Sheryl Sculley, USAA and multiple nonprofit collaborative
partners.
For Mayor Taylor, this accomplishment was one that
allowed her to understand a
major issue occurring in San
Antonio and develop a plan to
give many a second chance. According to Haven for Hope, 29
out of every 10,000 veterans are
homeless in the United States.
“In January 2015, I pledged
my commitment to the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran
Homelessness,” Mayor Taylor
stated. “Together, the City of
San Antonio, our business
sector led by USAA and our
nonprofit partners achieved
the goal of effectively ending
veteran homelessness in our
community.”
The Mayors Challenge to End
Veteran Homelessness is part
of a larger White House Joining Forces Initiative supported
by HUD, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and
the U.S. Interagency Council
on Homelessness and the National League of Cities. The
call-to-action was announced
by First Lady Michelle Obama
in June 2014 and was answered
by more than 850 cities and
communities across the United
States.
“San Antonio is a city with
a strong military history that
knows how to care for our
veterans and their families,”
Secretary Castro said. “That’s
why we have an even greater
responsibility to ensure that
once they’ve served their nation, they have a safe, stable
place to call home. I’m so proud
to congratulate the city and its
partners on working tirelessly
to give our veterans a dignified
home, setting an example for
communities across the nation.”
One of the main powerhouses
to close the financial gap was
USAA, whom contributed $2.1
million in January. The support
from the City, state and federal
resources have placed or are
placing hundreds of homeless
veterans into permanent housing.

declarado muerto. De acuerdo
a reportes posteriores, Emilio
Navaira falleció de un ataque al
corazón.

PEDRO FRIEDEBERG: PRAISE OF FOLLY— Ruiz-Healy Art is
pleased to present “Pedro Friedeberg: Praise of Folly.” The exhibition
will feature an eclectic mix of Pedro Friedeberg’s art across a fairly
broad range of media including: hand woven carpets, paintings, his

will be available with an essay by Dan Cameron. One of the master
illusionists of late 20th century art, Pedro Friedeberg is enjoying
something of a resurgent moment in the second decade of the 21st
century. Ever since the 2009 retrospective of his work at the Palacio
de Bellas Artes in Mexico City coincided one year later with the definitive critical study on him, authored by James Oles, there has been
a noticeable uptick in international critical, collector and museum
attention toward his unique oeuvre. Visit www.ruizhealyart.com for

HEALTH
UTHSCSA initiates master’s degree
in medical laboratory science
Special to La Prensa
People looking for employment in San Antonio’s $30.6 billion biomedical and health care
industry will be glad to know that
the UT Health Science Center
San Antonio is now offering one
of the few entry-level master’s
degree programs in medical
laboratory science in the nation.
The university’s School of
Health Professions just received
approval from the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board
to offer the master’s degree to
students who already have a
bachelor’s degree in another
field. No prior experience in a
health-related field is required.
The application deadline is June
15, with classes starting Aug. 22.
Medical laboratory scientists
are a critical part of the health
care team who analyze medical
samples in the clinical laboratory,
and the job outlook is excellent,
said Cheryl Burns, M.S., associate professor and director of
the master’s degree program in
laboratory science.
“We make a significant difference in the quality of patient care.
Physicians rely on laboratory test
results in diagnosing illnesses
and monitoring how patients are
progressing in their treatment,”
she said.
Nearly 100 percent of graduates from the Health Science
Center’s clinical laboratory sciences (CLS) program are offered
jobs upon graduation in such
areas as hospital laboratories,
public health, medical clinics,
the military and higher education
teaching future CLS students.
Prevention & Control
While the 24-month bachelor’s
degree in clinical laboratory sciences will continue to be offered,
the new 27-month master’s
program is designed to provide
deeper knowledge to students
who already have a bachelor’s
degree in another field. It is
expected to prepare students for
higher-level positions and possibly faster advancement, Burns
said.
The degree is one of only two
offered in Texas and a handful
in the U.S.
To learn more about the program including prerequisites,
requirements, application and
the career outlook, visit www.

The Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio receives
$500,000 gift from Frost
Special to La Prensa
Frost Bank and the Frost family have demonstrated their support for The Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio by donating a
$500,000 gift to the Hospital
in honor of National Nurses
Week.
“It was personally significant
to help The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio because
my great-great-grandfather,
Dr. Ferdinand Herff, was one
of the two trained physicians
practicing in San Antonio when
the Sisters came here in 1869,”
Tom Frost shared.
Frost served as a founding
member of The Children’s
Hospital Foundation and has
provided leadership, commitment and compassion for the
past 59 years. The gift will be
recognized in 22 nurses’ stations throughout the hospital.
In conjunction with the monetary gift, Frost sponsored National Nurse’s Week activities to
recognize all nurses that provide
healing for the families. In addition to support from Frost Bank,
this gift is also made possible by
generous donors, Pat and Tom
Frost, Kelley and Pat Frost and
the Mary Peterson Wyatt Trust,
Frost Bank, trustee.
“Simply put, nurses take care
of our children and families”
said Pat Frost about the group’s
support. “We are proud to place
our names behind the nurses
of The Children’s Hospital of
San Antonio and want them to
know that we appreciate them
not only this week, but every
single day.”
“The quality of care demonstrated by the nurses throughout the hospital is immeasurable and would not be the same
without the tireless dedication
from each associate,” added
Elias Neujahr, president of The
Children’s Hospital.
The nursing profession has
been supported and promoted
by the American Nurses Association (ANA) since 1896. Each
of ANA’s state and territorial
nurses associations promotes
the nursing profession at the
state and regional levels. Each
conducts celebrations on these
dates to recognize the contributions that nurses and nursing
make to the community.
Frost has been a financial
leader in the community since
its inception. In 1868, Frost
began as a small San Antonio
mercantile store and has grown
to more than 120 financial centers across Texas. Throughout
the decades, their values have
not changed. They believe that
philanthropy is the right thing
to do to strengthen our community for generations to come.

Gonzales, assistant director of
the Department of Human Resources at City of San Antonio,
told La Prensa.
Although San Antonio has
accomplished the goal of reducing veterans on the streets,
there is more work to be done
to keep the challenge flowing.
In the future, many officials
hope to direct their mission to
help homeless individuals and
families.
“We need to continue to
be able to follow up to make
sure that they continue in the
program…It is a dual journey
so that those navigators walk
through the process with the
homeless veteran,” said Gonzales. “We are also preparing
for new veterans that come into
the system and into the community, but we have systems
to help them out quickly…I
think that the next step is to
cover the whole spectrum of
homelessness.”

Por José I. Franco
[email protected]
El reforzado equipo Stars de
San Antonio, propiedad de la
empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) cuya mesa
directiva la preside la mujer de
negocios Julianna Hawn Holt,
en el AT&T Center con emotiva
ceremonia dio por inaugurada su
temporada número 14 en la liga
de baloncesto femenil Women’s
National Basketball Association
(WNBA).
El partido de apertura ante
las visitantes Dream de Atlanta
contó con asistencia de 7,572
espectadores, quienes aplaudie
ron la presentación de la nueva
quinteta estelar formada por las
aleras Monique Currie, Dearica

(Foto, Franco)
