Past, present and future, through time and across distances, each of us
plays an important role keeping the spirit and traditional practices
of our Samish Community alive.
This was witnessed again on Sept 25th. Members of our community gathered at the invitation of the
Karshner Center in the Puyallup School District to visit the new home of the modern Samish cultural items
that were gifted to the Center to acknowledge the return home of ancestral items last April. Throughout
time, we continue to gather to exchange gifts, honoring and strengthening connections, creating a resilient
network of individuals, families and communities that sustain Samish traditions. Karshner Center and
school district staff hosted this gathering of Samish families from near and far, members of neighboring
tribal communities and local residents to share their appreciation of our ongoing connection.
Center Director Brian Fox is excited that Karshner will be a place that many future generations of students
and community members will gather to share Samish and Coast Salish culture in a way that is respectful and
supported by our communities. He extended an ongoing invitation for us to gather and share. Gatherings
are a time to continue the practices of our ancestors for the nourishment of generations that follow. Many
times, important work is done when we come together. On this day, tribal member and former Tribal
Council member Ray Gorynski was honored for his part in keeping our traditions alive. Some time ago Ray
gifted a set of traditional tools for making cattail mats to one of our Samish members. In front of family and
friends gathered at Karshner, he was gifted a cattail mat made with those same tools. Leslie Eastwood,
Samish tribal member, current General Manager and recipient of those tools is learning to carry on and
share the tradition of making mats much like those that came home to Samish from the Karshner last spring.
It was a wonderful day keeping our spirit of sharing alive, making new and strengthening old connections,
and reminding each of us of the role we play in honoring our ancestors and nourishing our communities.
Thank you to Karshner staff for hosting and to everyone who gathered for a wonderful day.

Maiden of Deception Pass
Video News
Lincoln Theater Screening & Fund Raiser
Samish hosted a local screening of the film “Maiden of Deception Pass” at the Lincoln
Theater on August 20th as a fund raiser to Friends of the San Juan Islands efforts to establish a
Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) designation by the International Maritime Organization
and protect our local waters. An anonymous donor matched all funds raised by the event,
including box office and tee shirts and DVDs sold that evening. Almost 200 people attended
the two screenings, and raised just shy of $3500 that evening. With the matching donor funds,
Friends of the San Juan Islands has almost $7000 more towards the cost of pursuing the PSSA
designation to preserve the Salish Sea for everyone.

Health and Human Services (HHS) News
Here at 1809 Commercial Avenue, the HHS Building, we have been enduring the disarray of
remodeling and rehabilitation projects. First there was the repair necessitated by the roof leaking severely
last winter. Then, after that phase was completed, we’re now onto the long-planned floor covering
replacement. The old, worn-out, blue carpeting is being replaced with laminate inter-locking,
hard-wood-like panels. Jonathan Greer, Facilities Maintenance, is spearheading these projects.
Please come by, at your convenience, and see how much better this facility will be when we’re all done
with the flooring project. We’re all here to serve you, the Tribal Citizens. I’m just completing my first
three months in the HHS Director position. I would enjoy meeting any Samish Members who come by
the HHS building. Best wishes for an enjoyable fall season.
Respectfully Submitted,
John Miller, HHS Director
Contract Health Services (CHS) News
Eligibility::If you do not know whether or not you ar e eligible for Contr act Health/Pur chased and
Referred Care, (CHS/PRC) please call us to discuss the criteria. We are happy to help you. 360-899-5454
Prior approval::Patients who ar e eligible for CHS/PRC ar e r equir ed to have EACH AND EVERY
VISIT approved in advance. We ask that you call as soon as you know about the appointment. We will ask
you: when you are being seen (date), what you are being seen for (a symptom will suffice) and where are
you being seen…the name of the clinic or facility. Remember we cover 10 counties and we will not know
the name of ‘the clinic down the street from the hospital’, or ‘in the same building as such and such’. We
may also need the providers phone number.
If you call when you are at or on your way to the appointment, we may or may not be able to approve the
visit. If the provider is NOT in our system already, we must have certain tax forms on file before the
approval can be given. This can take days or sometimes weeks and your current visit will not be approved.
Copays::Some pr ovider s will ask you for the payment of co-pays (or co-insurance or deductible) at the
time of service. Do not pay the copay at the time of service. If you pay, you may not be reimbursed.
Stray Bills:: If you r eceive a statement, an invoice, or a bill for a medical ser vice, you should assume
that Samish CHS/PRC has NOT been billed. Do not wait until it goes to collection. We cannot help you if it
goes that far.
When you receive a bill, we ask that you do two things:
Call the place that has billed you and let them know that Samish is your secondary coverage.
Give them our phone number.
Send the bill to us via fax, e-mail or postal mail.

The 2015-2016 Seasonal Flu Vaccine:
Protects You and Those around You from Influenza!
As the flu season is now officially upon us, we would like to remind Samish Tribal Members that the first
and single best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and the community from seasonal influenza is by
getting the flu vaccine.
The Flu is a serious highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract that can lead to infection and
pneumonia especially in vulnerable people with weakened immune systems including pregnant women,
babies, young children and Elders. The CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older receive the
flu vaccine. Good health habits such as washing hands, covering coughs and staying home when sick are
other important ways to prevent the flu. Boosting the immune system by drinking plenty of fluids, getting
extra sleep, exercising regularly and eating a healthy balanced nutritious diet are also important preventative
measures.
This year’s flu vaccine provides protection against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be the
most common during the upcoming season. The traditional trivalent vaccine protects against two influenza
A viruses and an influenza B virus. The quadrivalent vaccine protects against four types of flu virus and is
available as a shot or a nasal spray. The nasal spray is
approved for healthy non-pregnant people 2 through 49 years of age provided there are no contradictions or
precautions. There is a high dose trivalent vaccine for people 65 and older which quadruples protection.
There are egg protein-free trivalent vaccines for those 18 years and older with egg allergies. For those who
don’t like large needles, there is an intra-dermal quadrivalent
vaccine delivered with a micro needle under the skin approved for people 18 through 64 years of age.
Should you have questions about the type of flu vaccine that is appropriate for you, your health care
provider can help you decide upon the best course of action.
The body’s immunity to flu viruses often declines over time. So, it is important to get the flu vaccine
every flu season. The flu vaccine is safe. You can’t get the flu from the vaccine because the virus in the
vaccine is either killed or weakened.
For people who are sick with the flu and those at high risk of serious flu complications such as those with
weakened immune systems, the CDC recommends the use of antiviral medications for the treatment and
prevention of influenza. Prompt treatment with antivirals begun within 48 hours of getting sick can mean
the difference between having a milder illness versus a serious illness that could result in hospitalization. If
you have any flu-like symptoms (fever/chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, runny or
stuffy nose), contact your health care provider immediately. Your health care provider can prescribe
antiviral medications that can make your symptoms less severe and make you feel better faster.
The information in this report has been compiled from the CDC and various other relevant government
agencies and is not a substitute for the advice of a qualified professional health-care provider.
To find a flu vaccine in your area: http://vaccine.healthmap.org/. For Seasonal Flu information:

Did you ShakeOut?
The Great Washington ShakeOut was held at 10:15am on October 15, 2015 and all Samish
staff and guests participated. The drill involved hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians through a
broad-based outreach program, media partnerships, and public advocacy by hundreds of partners,
including the Samish Indian Nation. The drill is held nationwide annually on the third Thursday of
October, and is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance. The ShakeOut drill creates the sense of
urgency that is needed for people, organizations, and communities to get prepared, to practice what to
do to be safe, and to learn what plans need to be improved. We all practiced, “Drop, Cover, and Hold
On” and the specified time and took note of any falling hazards around us.
To prepare yourself, follow these tips provided by www.ready.gov:
Before An Earthquake
 Look around places where you spend time. Identify safe places such as under a sturdy piece of
furniture or against an interior wall in your home, office or school so that when the shaking starts, you
Drop to the ground, Cover your head and neck with your arms, and if a safer place is nearby, crawl to
it and Hold On.
 Practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On!”
 To react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an
earthquake.
 Before an earthquake occurs, secure items that could fall and cause injuries (e.g., bookshelves,
mirrors, light fixtures).
 Store critical supplies (e.g., water, medication) and documents.
 Plan how you will communicate with family members, including multiple methods by making a
family emergency communication plan.
During An Earthquake
If you are inside a building:
 Stay where you are until the shaking stops. Do not run outside. Do not get in a doorway as this
does not provide protection from falling or flying objects, and you may not be able to remain standing.
 Drop down onto your hands and knees so the earthquake doesn’t knock you down. Drop to the
ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
 Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from falling debris.
 If you are in danger from falling objects, and you can move safely, crawl for additional cover
under a sturdy desk or table.
 If there is low furniture or an interior wall or corner nearby, and the path is clear, these may also
provide some additional cover.
 Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as light
fixtures or furniture.
 Hold on to any sturdy covering so you can move with it until the shaking stops. Stay where you are
until the shaking stops.
Teachings from the Samish Language Boat Tour of Traditional Territory
September 12, 2015
Sxwálex (Orcas Island) – “Reef nets scattered place”
Referring to reef net sites being all around this island not just centered in one place.
Sxwálech (Lopez Island) – “Reef Net at Back”
Referring to it being second in line on the salmon run, behind Lháqemesh (San Juan Island)
Or it may be referred to reef net use on the backside of the island. *
Reef nets were typically made out of willows. The Samish word for
willow Sxwáleílch means “reef net tree” the name willow was
named after reef net. It is common for Samish words for natural resources to be named after what the resource was used for. Also Samish
used ts’éxts’ex (stinging nettles) to make fishing nets.
Sxwále “reef net” literally means, “to make a narrow passage or cavity in the water”
which is illustrated in the picture below.
On the way to Lháqemesh (San Juan Island) we passed by some rocks
where ásxw (seals) were sunning themselves. Qwení (seagulls) were
perched on the rocks, and flying overhead and their calls could be heard
“qwení! qwení! qwení!” In front of the rocks was a bed of qw’ó7ng
(bull kelp) and lhéqes (seaweed).
The word qw’ó7ng is derived from the word sqw’ó7ngi (head)
because the bull kelp bulb looks like a head with hair flowing in the
current. Natives would hang bull kelp ribbons or hemlock branches
upside-down in the water so that herring would spawn on them and
they could then pull them up and eat the roe. It is possible that the
name for the maiden of deception pass “Ko-kwal-alwoot” may have
been derived from the word qw’ó7 embedded in the word
sqw’ó7ngi (head).
Next we passed tl’í7kwekeng (Cattle Point, San Juan Island) Embedded
within this Samish word is also the word for beach pea tl’í7kwen. Likely
because beach pea grows there or this is the place to find beach pea.
Then we passed by sxwásem the name for the south side of Mitchell
Bay, Lháqemesh. Meaning soapberry. This was likely an area where
soapberry grew and was harvested.
On the opposite side of the island is stólkwelh (Friday Harbor)
“place way out”, is a main Lháqemesh attraction today as this is
now where the ferry brings hundreds of tourists in daily. Imagine
what it was like hundreds of years ago. Within the word s’tolcel is
the word tol, which means, “go out in the water.” This could refer to
the landmass that sticks way out into the water from the island.
Throughout the day we saw q’ellhómechen (Orca Whale), kw’ónt’ (dahls porpoise), and other
qwénes (whale) including humpback whales, and a minke whale. We also saw eshás sea lion. It
was perhaps the most sea life I had ever seen in the Puget Sound in one day!
During the day I had the privilege of singing songs with Samish. We sang songs throughout the day, and
each time we stopped to be with the whales.
Táchel-sen i7suwá7 tse XwS7ámesh Elhtálngexw “I am here with Samish”
“You always need to say a prayer before going on a journey in nature. Songs are gifts from nature and
they are prayers” –George Adams

Some tribal members have expressed interest in using our tribal logo for gifts, fund raising, and other purposes. Council
has an ordinance in place regarding use of the Tribal Logo and Seal, and at this time only official activities of the Tribe
are permitted uses for these images. This ensures that anytime the logo is visible on posters, publications or products,
the activity or fund raiser has been approved by the Tribe with all levels of control in place
