My dear sisters and brothers,
Walking by a pet shop on his way to school, a young
boy stopped and stared through the window. Inside
were four black puppies playing together. After school
he ran home and pleaded with his mother to let him
have one of the puppies. “I’ll take care of it, Mom, I
will. If you can just give me an advance on my
allowance, I’ll have enough money to buy one with my
own money. Please, Mom, please.”
The mother, knowing full well the complications
having a new puppy would bring to a busy household,
could not resist her son. “Okay, you can get the puppy,
but I will expect you to take care of it.”
“Yes, Mom, I will.” Filled with excitement, the little
boy ran to the pet shop to buy his new puppy.
After determining that the boy had enough money, the
pet shop owner brought him to the window to choose
his puppy. After a few minutes, the young boy said,
“Um…I’ll take the one in the corner.”
“Oh no,” said the shop owner, “not that one; he’s
crippled. Notice how he just sits there; something is
wrong with one of his legs, so he can’t run and play
like the rest of the puppies. Choose another one.”
Without saying a word, the boy reached down, lifted
his pant leg to expose a chrome leg brace to the owner.
“No,” he said firmly, “I think I’ll take the puppy in the
corner.”
It turned out that what disqualified the puppy from
being chosen by others is what most qualified him to
be chosen by the little boy.
It’s amazing how few of us believe in the unqualified
grace of God. Oh, yes, God loves us, as long as we’re
clean and whole and fixed. But it turns out that what
disqualifies you and me from “spirituality” – the mess
of our lives and our crippledness – is what most
qualifies us to be chosen by Jesus.
Spirituality is not a formula, it is not a test, spirituality is not
about competency; it is about intimacy. It is not about
perfection, it is about connection. The way of the spiritual
life begins where we are now in the mess of our lives.
Accepting the reality of our broken, flawed lives is the
beginning of spirituality not because the spiritual life will
remove our flaws but because we let go of seeking
perfection and seek God in the mess of our unfixedness.
Broken, Blessed, Beloved are you,
Love, Fr. Rich

Creation Care Corner - Doing
Our Part
Pope Francis reminds us that Caring for Creation has
been part of our Catholic faith for over 800 years,
starting with St. Francis. He calls us to care more in
our generation to help future generations.
This weekly series reminds us that we can make a
difference on Earth, for Earth and for God's people
everywhere. Here's a suggestion for this week on how
making a change in your habits can make this world a
better place for all.
Simple Actions Go a Long Way-To-Do Tips for Energy Savings in Your
Household
1. Reduce, re-use, recycle: It’s not just
for cans and bottles anymore – be sure to recycle paper and food scrapings for compost. Re-use items
when possible rather than reaching for something
new. Instead of buying bottled water, filter your water
and put into a re-usable container. For more tips,
please see the Catholic Climate Covenant's website

Amazing Greys Senior Ministry
We had a wonderful turnout for the Morning Reflection
with Msgr. Clement Connolly on the Spirituality of Aging
held this past Tuesday!
Detention Ministry
On December 12, 2015, Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a
group of volunteers from the Holy Name of Mary Parish
visited the youth at Camp Glenn Rocky. In the giving spirit
of the holiday, volunteers brought a pastorela, hot
chocolate, and snacks to those at the juvenile correction
center.
What was most important about this visit was the message
of love that was conveyed to the youth at this detention
center. Boy and girls of our parish, 7-10 years of age, made
Christmas cards with drawing of families and Christmas
trees expressing the joy and fun they associate with
Christmas. Their message to the youth at Camp Glenn
Rocky was simple and moving: no matter what has
happened to these young people in the past, Jesus loves
them and no one is ever alone if they trust in him.
