Hey Everyone!
I would like to start by saying congrats to all of the
new CKI Club and District Officers! You have all
been in office for a month now and I am very glad
to have the opportunity to work with you all.
Please feel free to contact me for anything related
to CKI!
forget to apply!
The volume of information that is available or will
come out during your term can seem like a lot. I
recommend joining the CKI Business Reflector, the
Sub-region A Reflector, and, if your district has one,
your district’s reflector to help you keep up on all
that is going on. If you ever have questions, don’t
hesitate to contact your district board or me!
The CKI Board is
looking into a new
service partner for
CKI. Please Check
out STUFH on page 3
and let me know
what you think about
this potential partner!
International Convention is coming up soon! I
hope that you are planning on attending. This
year’s ICON will be different from years past.
Check out page 2 for more information about the
convention and keep watching for more
information on amendments coming in the next
few months!
I hope to be a resource of information and
ideas for you throughout the remainder of
my term. I hope your school term or
summer break is going well and let me
know what I and the iBoard can do to
help you!
Many applications for awards and the Tomorrow
Fund Grants are due soon! The dates and where
to find the applications are due are included in this
edition of the Northwestern Connection. So don’t

Circle K International Pledge:
I pledge to uphold the Objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through
service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization
of mankind’s potential.
International Convention 2008
This year’s ICON will be held August 6-9 in downtown Denver,
Colorado. With many places to go and many things to do,
Denver is a great city to hold ICON.
During registration, you can participate in the CKI Blood
Drive. Thursday night represent your school by showing
school pride at the first ever CKI Tail-gate Party. Show off
your talents at the CKI’s Got Talent Show. Come celebrate
a year of accomplishments, get new ideas for the new
school year, and meet CKI members from around the world!
Also represent your club during the House of Delegates and
help elect the new Circle K International Board.
Talk to your District Board for more information and how to
register for International Convention!
The Large Scale Service Project (LSSP) is held annually
a few days before ICON. This year’s LSSP is August 2-6,
2008 in Denver.
So far two projects have been arranged. For one day
the group will be working with the Salvation Army in
their thrift stores around Denver. The other project will
be assembling 1000 backpacks and making games
for the Denver Rescue Mission’s annual Backpack
Carnival. The third project is still to be announced.
Registration for LSSP can be found at:

Announcing the New Sub-region A Webpage URL and Reflector!
Thanks to the help of PNW CKI Alumni Oliver Chung and current CKI member of the University of
Washington Kenneth Kuan, Sub-region A now has our own e-mail reflector and a new webpage URL!
The new e-mail reflector (e-mail list) will provide a way for the Sub-region to easily communicate with one
another. To join the reflector, go to http://ckisubregiona.org/mailman/listinfo/business and fill out the form
or send me an e-mail. Once you are a member of the reflector, you can send e-mails to everyone on the list by
simply sending an e-mail to [email protected]. You will know when you receive e-mails from the list
when you see [Sub-region A] before the subject of the e-mail!
The new (and hopefully easier to remember then my school web address) Sub-region A webpage URL is
www.ckisubregiona.org. I have tried to put helpful links and files on there for you, but it is still a work in
progress. So please feel free to send me suggestions!
I hope these resources provide a way for our Sub-region to work together and stay connected with one another!!
2 CKI Chats Monthly
With so many people in the
Mountain and Pacific Time
Zones unable to attend the CKI
Online Chats, the
International Board will now
be hosting two chats on the
first Thursday of each month to
accommodate more people. All
CKI Members are encouraged
to attend either chat. The
chats will be held at 7pm MDT
and 10pm MDT!
NEW Six Cents Website
International Representative Kristen Reed has
worked very hard to put up a Six Cents
website. This is a great resource of
information on the Six Cents Initiative! It
also has an online form for submitting
information about Six Cents fundraisers. So
go check it out!
New Service Partner??? –STUFH
The iBoard is currently considering Students Team
Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) as a new service
partner. STUFH works to link colleges and
universities with local food banks and to help
bring awareness to the campus of the issues related
to hunger.
I encourage you all to look into this program and
let me know what you think! If your school is still
in session, please consider trying this project and
let me know how it goes!
Six Cents Pins
CKI now has Six Cents Pins to sell
towards raising money for the Six Cents
Initiative! The pins are selling for a base
amount of US $3 with all money raised
going toward the initiative. If you are
interested in selling or buying pins, talk
to your district governor!
Service Initiative Rotation Area
Don‟t forget that the CKI Service Initiative Rotation area is now Health
and Safety Issues: On Call for the Future. Since it is summer, you can
encourage your club members to get involved with programs wherever they
are. However, the rotating initiatives aren‟t just about doing projects in
that area during those dates. You can plan projects now for the next school
year! Some service projects you can plan with your club are: sponsoring a
health and nutrition fair, sponsoring a child first aid training class,
sponsoring a Buckle Your Seatbelt public relations campaign, and
organizing a program to ensure all children in your community are
fingerprinted.
For more information about the Service Initiative, go to www.circlek.org
and search for “Service Initiative” in the search box at the top of the page.
Tomorrow Fund Grant Applications due SOON!
Every year interest from the CKI endowment fund, the Tomorrow Fund, is awarded as grants to
clubs and districts to help fund service projects. The deadline for applying for grants is coming up
fast! So if you have a great idea for a service project, it would be a good idea to apply for one of
these grants!
A few things to keep in mind and a few tips for applying:
About US $100-1,500 was awarded for service grants last year.
Asking for part of the funds and not the total needed is a good idea.
Asking for money for materials rather than money to travel is also a good idea.
Collaborating with other groups such as other Kiwanis Family Clubs and/or local
organizations shows that a lot has been put into the idea, people that may have more
experience are involved, and additional resources are more likely to be provided for project
completion.
Go to http://www.circlek.org/service/tomorrowfund.asp for more tips!
Applications are due July 15. So start planning! To find the application, go to www.circlek.org
and search for “Tomorrow Fund” in the search box at the top of the page.
These grant applications are within reach for any club or district, so apply!! If you have any
questions, please ask me or a member of your district board!
Summer of Service in Kisumu, Kenya
By: Amy Blauman, PNW Global Service Chair „06/‟07 & „08/‟09
This past summer, myself and 4 other Circle K members from
across the PNW District, traveled to Kisumu, Kenya for our
district‟s first international service trip. We spent 2 months
working on various projects with the Kisumu Kiwanis club.
These included volunteering with a feeding/activity program for
Kiwanis sponsored youth, tutoring Berketts patients at Russia
Hospital, and giving presentations to students at 11 different
high schools throughout the city.
Our final project was a culmination of most of our projects from
throughout the summer. Along with our Kiwanis sponsored
youth and CKI volunteers, we organized a clean up day with
high school students outside of the Kibuye market. While the
project itself was instrumental in motivating the students, the
outside discussion proved to show the biggest impact. Students
ventured into the market to discuss environmental issues with
market vendors. In addition, to conclude the clean up day, all
participants joined in a open discussion on issues faced within
the community and possible solutions to these problems.
Our experience in Kenya was life-changing and something we
will never forget. I would encourage anyone to take the chance
to participate in a service project abroad. The experience can
teach you so much about yourself as you view life through the
eyes of others.

A little note: Rachelle Strawther is a past PNW District Governor. In 2005, Rachelle moved to
Kisumu to work with the Kiwanis Club on their projects. She has been PNW’s connection to Kenya.
If you are interested in finding out more about her work there or are interested in donating to the
Kisumu Kiwanis Club, visit http://www.myafricanconnection.com for more information and for

Utah-Idaho DCON 2008
Governor Lauren and I drove 5 hours to Salt Lake City on
March 28th for the UT-ID District Convention. The weekend
was packed with many great activities such as opening session, a
motivational and entertaining Key Note Speaker from one of
the local Kiwanis Clubs, club officer training, and much more.
Special thanks to Westminster College CKI for hosting the
convention! They did a great job!

and had many Key Club Seniors
sign up for more information about
CKI in the fall!
New March of Dimes Activity Book
March of Dimes is one of CKI‟s service partners, but
many clubs do not know much about this partner or
what kinds of service projects they can do with them.
Members of CKI Committees recently got together
and came up with a manual to give more
information about March of Dimes and to help clubs
come up with service project ideas. The March of
Dimes Service Partner Activity Book can be found at
www.ckisubregiona.org/MOD.pdf.
Note for Canadian Clubs: March of Dimes Canada is
not the same as March of Dimes in the U.S..
However, many of the suggested service projects are a
great way to do local service projects without a U.S.
March of Dimes Chapter.
Club/District Officer Guides
Are you a little shakey on your duties as a club or
district board member? The Club Officer Guide and
District Officer Guide give a complete description of
the duties of each board position.
Of course, these are suggested duties and many of the
duties listed are duties to be done once a year. So
don‟t worry about how long the lists are, but they may
give you ideas and help you see the things you could or
should do. They also provide lots of ideas and
information about CKI in general.
So check them out!!
Go to www.circlek.org and search for “Club Officer
Guide” or “District Officer Guide”. If you have any
problems downloading these, let me know!
