I don’t usually reach to bathroom humour in my writings, but while sitting around the other
evening, my wife reminded me of this incident I had obviously tried to forget.
About a year and a half ago, we decided to go, as a group with my brother-in-law, his girlfriend
and kids, as well as a few family friends, to Playa del Carmen. I looked forward to some hot sun
and sand between my toes, as that winter seemed to be somewhat punishing. That trip taught me
two things. I’ll explain those lessons learned at the end.
We were staying at an all inclusive, so needless to say, we ate well. After an enormous breakfast,
we head out to tour our surroundings, maybe do a little shopping, and take in some entertainment.
We come to a park where some locals are entertaining the tourists with traditional dancing and
pole climbing. That’s when Mother Nature decided that I should lighten my load from that heavy
breakfast I had.
I tell Lois I’ll be back in a bit and head off to find a public restroom. As I go from shop to shop, it
seems no one has a washroom. I think to myself, “Either these people have the strongest bowels
in the world, or they really don’t like strangers using their bathrooms.” Eventually, I come across
a policeman that points and directs me, in broken English, to a bus depot about two blocks away.
By this time, I’m walking like a penguin and sweating profusely. But using muscles I didn’t even
know I had, I managed to hold it in. As I reach the bus depot I desperately look around for a
bathroom. Not seeing any, I approach a security guard and inquire as to where I might find one.
He points up two flights of stairs on the other end of what I can only describe as the biggest bus
station in the world.

pg 2 Trust me, folks, these were the toughest stairs I’ve ever had to climb. But
I made it to the top only to be greeted by a line-up that seemed to include
almost everyone on the planet. Eventually, I make my way towards the
front of the line. With the ‘Promise Land’ within spitting distance, I notice
people dropping coins into a slot before going through a turnstile. Crap!
It’s a pay washroom!
As I get to the front of the line, I ask the security guard how much? I’m
told 5 pesos. I don’t have any change on me, so I ask him if I can give him
a twenty peso bill. He shakes his head, no, and points at the coin slot and
says, “5 pesos”. I tell him he can keep the change… I don’t want any
change… Just please let me in the bathroom! But lucky me, I get an
honest security guard that can’t be bribed.
Now, I’m actually going backwards in the line-up as I plead with one
stranger after another to give me a 5 peso coin for my twenty peso bill. I
don’t know if they just didn’t understand what I was asking for, or if they
were suspicious of me passing off counterfeit twenty peso bills, but I was
almost back to the stairs before I could find someone willing to help me
out. I go back to the front of the line to present my newly acquired 5 peso
coin, but the guy that is now at the front of the line looks at me sternly as
if I’m some kind of criminal and points to the back of the line. I look over
with hope to the security guard, but he sides with the guy that now
occupies the front of the line.
After standing in line again for what seems like an eternity, I finally make
it back to the front of the line. As soon as the security guard gave me a
wave, I dropped that coin in the slot and blew through that turnstile.
There’s a fella inside the door that tries to stop me. I can see a basket with
money in it beside him on the counter, but now is not the time to listen to
some street vendor selling wares and I continue on as if I didn’t even see
him.
As I’m going stall to stall and desperately shaking doors to find one that
isn’t occupied, I finally come across one that’s opening. I almost knock the
previous occupant over as I rush past him and slam the door behind me.
Usually, I would clean the seat before sitting, (I can still hear my mother’s
voice in my head telling me that you never know what nasty germs you
can get in a public washroom) but these are desperate times, so I decide
I’ll just kinda hover over the seat. Just my luck, the door latch hadn’t
caught and someone else looking for a vacant stall opens the door,
knocking me back fully onto the seat.
Glorious relief finally comes. I swear, at that moment, I heard a chorus of
angels sing ‘Hallelujah’. I look around for the toilet paper dispenser…
There is none (and I hear my mother’s voice in my head telling me that I
would have known that if I had cleaned the toilet seat).
Yeah… That guy I rudely dismissed when I entered the bathroom, hands
out the toilet paper to those that will need it. They don’t put dispensers in
the stalls, because then people steal the rolls. The basket of money beside
him? Those were tips.
So, the two lessons I learned, folks? When travelling, always carry different
denominations of coins. And always carry some Kleenex or napkins on
you, because you never know when you might have to blow your nose…
or something.

We are so rich in resources! We are not just maple syrup
and incredible music, you know. We have some big names,
companies, and enterprises in our home and native land.
The Hudson’s Bay Company is one example. Founded on
May 2, 1670, the Hudson’s Bay Company is one of the oldest
operating commercial entities in the world, let alone Canada.
Known today as more of a retailer, back in the early years,
the HBC was an empire, owning most of Canada and shaping
Canada’s history as the dominant fur traders of their day.
Blackberry - RIM, aka Research in Motion, was founded in
1995. Blackberry undeniably changed the world at one point
with their business savvy and easy-to-use smart phone.
Canadian Tire Money – ingenious customer loyalty program
indeed. It does help keep us on the map for our very colourful
and pretty currency. Keep them guessing, eh?!
Let’s talk Loblaws because this makes me giggle. Loblaws is
a totally Canadian chain of grocery stores in Canada, and
Airdrie is home to two of them (yay!). Started in 1919 in
Toronto, there are now over 2000 stores Canada-wide. Now,
here’s where my giggle comes in. I was growing up in the
Ottawa area and Ottawa got a Loblaws much sooner than my
little town of Renfrew. As a child, when I heard that someone
was going to Ottawa to Loblaws, I always thought they were
saying, “Blah blahs.” “Why would anyone go to ‘Blah blahs’?”
I thought. All I really knew was that they had some smoking
good deals.
Another rich name/enterprise is Massey, which started out
as blacksmiths back in 1847 and are now, today, the most
prominent manufacturer of agricultural equipment in the
Commonwealth of the United Kingdom.
What about Reitmans? Ring any bells? Reitmans – huge chain
of women’s clothing stores across Canada. Ladies like to shop
from across the border up here for quality and sizing choices.
Did you know Rogers came to be by Ted Rogers Sr. inventing the
first radio receivers to run on household alternating current?
He later went on to create a radio station. Ted Rogers Jr. built
the Rogers empire that we know today - cable tv, telephone
and internet services.
Pretty cool, I’d say, and there is nothing more cool than seeing
a ‘Made in Canada’ tag or sticker on your purchases. Vive le
Canada!!

Together We Are Canada
by Leanne Guenther
My name is British Columbia
The jewel of the West Coast.
Forestry and fishing are
The things that I do most.
Hi, I am Alberta
A wild west kind of place
With cows and oil and mountains
And lots of open space.
I am Manitoba
And I’m Saskatchewan
We’re the golden prairies
Where fields of wheat grow in the sun
Hi, I am Ontario
The home of government
To me each year the leaders
Of our democracy are sent.
Bonjour, I am Quebec
Here French is my language too
When I want to ask “how are you?”
I say, “comment allez vous?”
Newfoundland, New Brunswick
And Nova Scotia -- those are we,
We are Atlantic Provinces
The three musketeers of the sea.
I’m Prince Edward Island
And I know I may be small
But without me all the rest of you
Would have no potatoes at all.

Prayer
My four-year-old likes to say the blessing at mealtimes, usually repeating the
same short prayer: “Thank you, God, for this gracious food. Amen.”
One evening, however, he thanked the Lord for the birds, the trees, each of
his friends, and asked God to watch over his family and help them to be good.
I was thrilled that he was finally praying from the heart.

Some of our readers may know that I got to spend last March with my Dad
before he passed away. That month is, was, and will always be, very important
to me. When my siblings and myself decided to settle 3000 miles away, Mom
and Dad were never supposed to age or fall ill. Last March, I wasn’t 100%
sure of what was going to be the outcome of Dad and my daily adventures,
but he was adamant that he needed to get his affairs in order. Oh, dear, I
sometimes hate being so candid in my writings, but those that know me will
appreciate this story.
When the time came for those dreaded calls, and the forwarding of death
certificates, I handled it like a boss. The cellphone company sent me a bill
for April, but of course by the time it reached me in Alberta, it’s past due. I
called, I emailed the certificate, and I got the bill cleared up. Or did I? The
next month I got a bill for $0.17. Yes - that would be seventeen cents. I call, I
email thedeath certificate, again, and everything is cleared up. Whew, right?!
In June, I receive a bill, which I can assure you was the last bill from said
cellphone company, in the amount of $0.19. Interest on the past due interest.
So, I did what every annoyed and frustrated person would do; I created an
invoice for $120.00: two hours of admin. time in total, long distance calling,
waiting on hold, my time spent scanning and emailing proper documentation,
and calling again to confirm they received said documents in order to cancel
the account. I had to do this three times, so I think two hours is fair. When
my invoice reached the proper department, I received a call. It was the final
call I received from said cellphone company. I understand glitches and
mistakes because I make them daily. I understand human error and I try to
be forgiving of such, as I hope others are of my human errors. For whomever
is left making the calls and cleaning up an estate, it is very emotional. Banks,
credit card companies, and all other big corporations, should really look at
adding an estate department to their payroll. Utilities, cellphones, cable, are
all time-consuming and the customer service rep doesn’t always understand
how to cancel an account because of a death. If I was handing out advice, it
is to document everything!! Write down the time you called, who you spoke
with, get an employee number, if they have one, and a confirmation number
of the transaction.
The following was submitted by a Scoop faithful friend and because I saw
the humour in this, knowing it happens, I felt it was worth a go. My brother,
sister, and I, had great service at the bank that we were left dealing with,
as far as friendliness, but the advice was not consistent, let’s just say. The
companies shall remain nameless as it is not important which provider this
is about, but I assure you that it can, and did, happen.
A lady died this past January, and the bank billed her for February and March
for their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees
and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, but now is
somewhere around $60.00.

A family member placed a call to the bank. The following conversation took
place:
Family Member: ‘I am calling to tell you that she died in January.’
Bank: ‘The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.’
Family Member: ‘Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.’
Bank: ‘Since it is two months past due, it already has been.’
Family Member: ‘So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?’
Bank: ‘Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to
the credit bureau, maybe both!’
Family Member: ‘Do you think God will be mad at her?’
Bank: ‘Excuse me!!?’
Family Member: ‘Did you just get what I was telling you . . . the part about her
being dead?’
Bank: ‘Sir, you’ll have to speak to my supervisor.’
Supervisor gets on the phone.
Family Member: ‘I’m calling to tell you, she died in January.’
Bank: ‘The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.’
Family Member: ‘You mean you want to collect from her estate?’
Bank: (Stammer) ‘Are you her lawyer?’
Family Member: ‘No, I’m her great nephew.’ (Lawyer info given)
Bank: ‘Could you fax us a certificate of death?’
Family Member: ‘Sure.’
(fax number is given) After they get the fax:
Bank: ‘Our system just isn’t set up for death. I don’t know what more I can do
to help.’
Family Member: ‘Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep
billing her. I don’t think she will care.’
Bank: ‘Well, the late fees and charges do still apply.’
Family Member: ‘Would you like her new billing address?’
Bank: ‘That might help.’
Family Member: ‘Rookwood Memorial Cemetery, 1249 Centenary Rd, Sydney,
Plot Number 1049.’
Bank: ‘Sir, that’s a cemetery!’
Family Member: ‘Well, what do you do with dead people on your planet?’

MEMORY LANE...
as we embrace 2016 and prepare to celebrate 15 years of Scoop
publications and 20 years of door to door delivery, we would
like to take you on a trip down memory lane...
The Scoop on Poop
The year was 2011, and the date was right around this time of year, April
1st I believe. Part of me is almost nervous to hash up the past, but this
one definitely goes into our memory lane hall of fame: the year Al and
Brett Wilson pulled the April Fool’s Joke of all time on our community.
We were working with the Stick it to Cancer ball hockey tournament raising
funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Mr. Brett Wilson was heavily
involved with the event, and one thing led to another. Mr. Wilson is very
well known for his practical jokes and love of “tom foolery”. Al, on the other
hand, is usually the serious one, but does enjoy a great practical joke. Just
don’t scare him. He doesn’t like to be scared. Ask Phyllis (insert giggle).
Anyways, with Jason as our graphics guy, and Photoshop as our friend,
we edited a photo of Al and Mr. Wilson to include our very own Here’s the
Scoop, and managed to place them in front of our office. The original idea
was to suggest that Here’s the Scoop was now owned by the renowned
Brett Wilson, one of CBC’s Dragons at the time, on the infamous Dragon’s
Den.
With Mr. Wilson’s imagination, and Al’s co-operation, the next thing I
knew was Brett Wilson
was buying Here’s the
Scoop and the printing
was being moved to
Edmonton. “Apparently”
Mr. Wilson had acquired
a small company that
turned cow manure
into paper and he had
a special liking for
our “No News is Good
News” paper.
Oh boy, that phone went
CRAZY! The emails, the
texts; everyone wanted
to know what we were going to do and if we
were staying on. Now, the reason I hate to hash up the past is because
this was an April Fool’s Day joke that went on for a lot of years. It’s still
talked about, and there is still some confusion even as of recent months,
where I was asked if Brett was still in the picture and what it was like to
work for him. Heck, we even had mail delivered to our office for him.
It was the prank of all pranks for us here at Scoop Central, and we owe
our staff a debt of gratitude for their patience with the public’s attention
to this. The real best part of this... I got to meet and chat with Brett Wilson!

Old Dog
My sister’s dog had been deaf and blind for years. When she started to suffer painful tumors, it was time to put her down. As
I explained this to my seven-year-old son, he asked if Jazzy would go to heaven. I said I thought she would, and that in dog
heaven, she would be healthy again and able to do her favourite thing: chase squirrels.
Jacob thought about that for a minute, then said, “So dog heaven must be the same as squirrel hell.”

It’s not the kids that are bad, it’s the names their parents gave them.
Aren’t you glad you’re not called “Cornphuffleloxiediddums”?
But if you were a celebrity’s child you just might be...
1. Penn & Teller, masters of magic and illusion... so when Penn Jillette named
his daughter, what magical name did he give her?
Heineken Pilsner
Moxie Crimefighter
Scottish & Newcastle Pale
Castlemaine ZZZZ
2. I loved Arthur Ashe; in the days when some players at Wimbledon were
venting their spleens on court and abusing the umpires, Ashe came across as
a true gentleman. He married a photographer so what snappy name did they
give their daughter?
Camera
Alligator
Crocodile
Turtle
3. David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son, Brooklyn, was named after the
New York Borough. Why did the former captain of England’s football team call
his first son after such an all-American place?
His father ate candy corn there He was conceived there
His mother sang there
His parents liked the bridge
4. Rob Morrow’s parents had fairly prosaic occupations - his mother was a
dental hygienist and his father was in industrial lighting - but his own career
in television and movies clearly affected his sense of humour. What would
you call your daughter if your surname was Morrow?
Borrow
Tu
Sorrow
Hollow
5. We all know that Michael Jackson gave his kids some pretty weird names
but his brother Jermaine carved out his own niche in the royal hall of name
shame. Which one of these names was given to a son of Jermaine’s?
Jermajesty
Herindoors
Five
Historical
6. When celebrities give their first child a weird name the chances are they’re
all going to be like that, which is fair enough - if it affected only one he or
she would feel picked on. After three daughters with odd names what did the
‘naked chef’ Jamie Oliver call his son? Although it does sound like he’ll be a
good friend to his toys.
Corporal Punishment
Buddy Bear Maurice
Partial Penguin
Numpty Nohands
7. There are times when I wonder if celebrities should be allowed to have
children at all, or if they are, then they should be forced to choose from a list
of boring names. John Cougar Mellencamp has several children, one of whom
was named...?

9. Ving Rhames, who came to fame in ‘Pulp Fiction’, adopted a short form
