Notes from Monsignor Easton
The Electronic Age
I have been asked a number of times by some members
of the parish if it is possible to make contributions by direct
deposit or credit card. One person said that they could then
get their frequent flyer miles. Some members of the parish
already have their offerings or tuition payments sent by a
payment service. Some members already make their Master
Plan pledge or pay tuition by credit card.
As I pondered these questions, I realized that, with online
banking, I am writing fewer and fewer checks myself. Some
payments are made automatically through a credit card or my
checking account. And personally, I really like direct deposit of
my paycheck. The age of electronic banking is upon us.
The Stewardship Committee and the Development Office
did some research on the issue, and next weekend we will
have details on how it can and will happen for those who are
interested. It is safe, secure, and easy to use. It will be
convenient for those who use it. I know that I am looking
forward to using it myself. An added benefit is that it will help
the parish cut back on some costs.
Feast of Saint Blaise
Next Friday, February 3, is the Feast of Saint Blaise, Bishop
and Martyr. It is believed that Blaise was martyred in the
persecution of Licinius in the early 4th century. He was bishop
of Sabaste in Armenia and lived in a cave on Mount Argeus.
He was known to be a healer of both men and animals;
according to legend, sick animals would come to him on their
own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer.
Agricola, governor of Cappadocia, came to Sebaste to
persecute Christians. His hunters went into the forests of Argeus
to find wild animals for the arena games, and found many
waiting outside Blaise’s cave. Discovered in prayer, Blaise was
arrested, and Agricola tried to get him to recant his faith. While
in prison, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners,
including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone; this
led to the blessing of throats on Blaise’s feast day and is
associated with the healing of maladies of the throat.
Traditionally the blessing of throats takes place on his feast day.
Here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower, the
blessing of throats will take place at the conclusion of the
two morning Masses at 6:30 and 8:30 am.
Parish Party
In past years there has been an appreciation party for all
the members of the parish in recognition of the generosity and
time given to the parish. Some years it was held around
Christmas. However, that time of year is so busy. Last year it
was held for Mardi Gras. With Lent being so late, and with
February in need of some cheer, the Parish Council decided to
have the party this year near the Feast of Saint Valentine. Plan
on attending Friday, February 10, in the grade school gym.
This past week, the Life Science Room on the second floor
of the high school and academy was dedicated. It is a stateof-the-art science room. It is the first, but very significant, step
toward the upgrading of all the science rooms at the school,
an important part of the Master Plan. If you have the chance,
stop by and see what is happening.
I would especially like to thank Mr. and Dr. Cardelli and
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Steinmetz for their Master Plan
contributions toward the science programs. I would also like
to express my gratitude to Mr. David Jaeger for the many
hours he spent on design and the actual renovation work. It
is truly a most pleasant atmosphere in which to learn.
Great things can happen when we all work together.
Catholic Schools Week
This coming week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week.
We have so much to celebrate in our community. All three of
our schools are providing a wonderful educational and
spiritual experience for the students of the community. We
are especially proud of our grade school, which received the
distinction of being the only school in Michigan to earn the
title of “National Blue Ribbon School” in 2005. A heartfelt thank
you goes to the faculty and administration at all the schools
for their dedication and commitment to excellence. We also

Last Sunday, a large number or catechumens and
candidates preparing to enter or return to the Catholic Church
were presented at Mass. There may be people in your life who
are also being called, but need encouragement. To be better
prepared to answer their questions and concerns, you might
want to watch some of the wide variety of fascinating
conversion story videos available. They include people who
were formerly: Swedish Lutheran; atheist; Episcopal; Nazarene
pastor; Four Square Pentecostal ministers; atheistic Jew;
charismatic non-denominational pastor, Presbyterian,
occultist, Methodist, Assemblies of God, Episcopal, Baptist;
Mormon; Jehovah Witness; Methodist; Anglican; fallen away
Catholics; and more. Lending Library hours are Sundays from
10 am-2 pm and Fridays from 9:15 am-noon, Conference
Center, Room C. For information call Kathy McGuire at
248.541.6834 or JoAn Gilleran at 248.629.4045.
Knights of Columbus
Next Sunday we will have a
Corporate Communion at the 10:45
am Mass. We will have reserved
seating. On this day we will be
showing our support for those Brother
Knights and their families who are
participating in the annual March For
Life in Washington DC this week.
Please join us for coffee and donuts following Mass in the
Conference Center.
We thank all of those Brother Knights and their family
members who came out to help with the Monstrance visit,
the fish fry, the Vocations Dinner, the first round of the
basketball free throw contest and the degree exemplifications
at National Shrine Parish, St. Regis Parish in Bloomfield Hills,
and All Saints Council in Taylor. With a lot of families helping,
much was accomplished. The ladies deserve special
recognition for rolling up their sleeves and being actively
involved as well. Thanks to the Challenge Girls and the Squires
for their help as well.
Several families went the extra mile during the past few
weeks. As such, they were nominated by members of the
Council for special recognition.

The Archdiocese of
Detroit is pleased to
announce its Fourth
Annual
Men’s
Conference
at
Calihan Hall at the
University of Detroit on
March 25. Men are
recognizing that there is more
to life than what they’re
experiencing and that they need to grow in order to survive
in today’s society. These conferences have an element which
Catholic men have missed, such as that found in some
Evangelical-Protestant movements, such as Promise Keepers,
which help rejuvenate the men’s movement. A common topic
that brings out more emotion is a man’s relationship with
God, with his father, with his children, his wife, and with his
community. Men learn from other men how to step up to
lead their families in faith. As laymen, our job is to go out
into the culture, into politics, into the workplace and
rejuvenate it. We are hoping to bring more men into this
experience, 5000 or more to be exact. Contact John Snyder
from the National Shrine of the Little Flower at 248.588.8741
for tickets or information. You can also download a
registration form, and view highlights of previous
conferences, obtain more information on our conference
speakers, and see the schedule at www.mensfellowship.com.
Registration is only $40 in advance. ($50 at the door). A box
lunch is included.

extend a thank you to the community at large. Without your support, we
would not be able to accomplish all that we are.
Rosie, Carlito, Zoska, and Saba
Rosie seldom barks. Usually it is only one bark which means “open the
door.” It is her way of saying that she needs to go out, or that she wants in.
I can only remember two times in the past five years when she has barked
at strangers, and both times it was good that she did.
Saba, on the other hand, barks at everything and everyone. Sometimes
she hears things we don’t and it seems like she is barking at nothing. She
is much more the watchdog. Luckily she even watches out for good old
friendly Rosie.
Tuition Grant Applications Available
Applications are now available for the Tuition Assistance Program of
the Archdiocese of Detroit. These grants, made available through the
Stewards for Tomorrow campaign, are given to families in need with
students in 1st-12th grades. Grade school and academy grants are $600
and high school grants are $700.
Applications are available at any school office. A pastor signature is
no longer required, however, membership in a parish will be verified
through the pastor before awards are determined. A $19 fee must be
included with the application form, which must be received by the Private
School Aid Service in Lakewood, Ohio by April 3.
There is no longer an “Extenuating Circumstance Process” for parents
to appeal the decision regarding their application. The initial decision will
be final and all award money will be designated; therefore, no more funds
will be available after the awards are determined.
Life Matters
Even after 33 years of legalized abortion, there are still so many who
know so little about the real agenda of the “pro-choice”/pro-abortion
movement. If it were really about “choice,” why is there resistance to give
women all the information about all their choices, not just one? If it were
really about “women’s health,” then why are laws blocked that would
regulate abortion clinics to make them safer or informing women of the
related health risks to abortion including an increased risk of suicide? If it
were really about population control, why do so many countries have
negative population growth and over two million couples wait for years
to adopt? If it were really about “just abortion,” then why do we also see
an increase in infanticide, euthanasia, assisted suicide and killing of life for
genetic research? Please use this time of the 33rd anniversary of Roe vs.
Wade to educate yourself on the real pro-abortion agenda and how it
endangers the dignity and sanctity of all human life – the unborn, the
weak, the disabled, the elderly. Educate yourself so you can talk to relatives,
friends and co-workers on the issue. Don’t assume someone knows the
truth because they are Catholic. Please call the Education Center for Life
at 248.816.8489 or info@edcenterfor life.org to receive materials, or see
www.edcenterforlife.org for their catalog.

Readings of
the Week
Grade School
Spanish
Spanish classes at Shrine Catholic Grade
School are quite exciting these days. Sixth graders
have been working on food vocabulary creating
menus (in Spanish, of course) for the cafes they
own. Fifth graders can tell you what time it is…if
you know how to ask them in Spanish. Fourth
graders continue to work on the days of the week
and months of the year, while our third graders
are playing Spanish BINGO to practice their
alphabet, colors and shapes. They also recite the
Sign of the Cross daily. Second grade students
have worked diligently on the alphabet and are
showing great progress on their numbers. Our
first graders have learned eleven different colors
with the help of a puppet named Rosco. They
also sing a Buenos Dias song beautifully.
Kindergarten students are terrific at greeting you
with hola or adios, and are doing quite well with
their Spanish manners. It’s wonderful to have
such enthusiastic students!
Senora O’Brien
Dr. Kristine Cohn, Secretary’s Regional
Representative from the U.S. Department of
Education, congratulates Shrine Catholic Grade
School students on the 2005 Blue Ribbon Award.
In February, the students will kick off “Paws
With a Cause,” where students are encouraged
to read as many books as they can. The reading
marathon proceeds go toward training and
pairing dogs with disabled people who need
canine assistance. Assisted by Mrs. Mary
Valentage and her daughter Dominique, the
program is meant to encourage reading while
helping others.
Seventh graders entertained an influx of sixth
graders. The goal was to show the sixth graders
all the academy has to offer by taking them
through a mock school day. Each seventh grader
was paired with a sixth grader and showed their
visitors different classes, eating lunch in the
cafeteria, mastering a locker combination in
under three minutes, and so on.
“These visit days really pay off,” said Mrs. Linda
Golombisky. “There are a high percent of sixth
graders who choose to come to the academy.”
In between reading voraciously or
entertaining sixth grade guests, the students
continue to hone their creative skills. The Creative
Writers’ club, facilitated by Mrs. Golombisky, has
been exploring poetry and trying their hands at
song lyrics and slogans. These skills might come
in handy for the music ministry group which,
according to Mrs. Golombisky, “continues to
grow.”

4th Sunday in Ordinary
Time: “I know who you
are.”
Dt. 18:15-20, 1Cor 7:32-35, &
Mk 1:21-28
This week’s readings focus on our
ability to know God and recognize His
Presence in our lives. As disciples we are all called to search for God active in
our world. That is why St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians may rattle a few
cages when first read; giving the impression that somehow the state of
marriage lessens one’s chances of being holy. After all, the Apostle’s words
may lead one to the conclusion that marriage is a distraction or an impediment
to following Christ, increasing one’s anxieties as the man or woman tries to
divide his or her attention between the daily running of a household and
following the Lord. I truly believe what St. Paul is trying to tell us is that
distractions cloud our ability to seek the Lord in all things. When we discover
the presence of God, we know peace. When a man and a woman are joined
together in marriage, the two become one in a sacred union. When either
the husband or wife places outside interests above their relationship the
marriage is threatened, even if this ‘outside interest’ is the Lord.
How does one understand a God who unconditionally loves, is merciful,
kind, and forgiving? To know God is to be in relationship with Him and to do
this, one must begin to understand how to love. In a marriage, the couple
becomes the image and likeness of God as they reflect His unconditional
love for each other, the willingness to sacrifice for each other’s happiness
and well-being, and in the act of childbearing share in the creation of new
life. Beginning as the human experience of love between a child and his or
her parents, this emotion is transformed into the Mystical Love, ultimately
modeling the relationships between Mary, Jesus, and God in the roles of
mother, father, and child.
Beyond being a model of God’s love, the family is a model for the Church.
In St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle writes of the unity of the
Church. He compares the union of husband and wife to the relationship
between Christ and His Church, writing “This is a great mystery.” (Ephesians
5:32a) Some three centuries after Ephesians, St. John Chrysostom called the
family a “micra ecclesia” or “little church.” So important is the role of the family
in establishing and carrying out the work of the Christ on earth that Church
Documents recognize the Christian family “constitutes a specific revelation
of and realization of ecclesial communion, and for this reason it can and
should be called a domestic church” (Lumen Gentium 11; CCC 2204).
St. Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians is not about who is worthy and who is
not of seeking the Lord, but rather is a message of the importance of finding
the peace of Christ present in our relationships. Through the love shown to
each other, parents bring the face of Christ alive to each other and their
children. Marriage requires unconditional love, a letting go of our own wants
and needs and sacrificing them to the desires of our spouse. If there is
reciprocal love, a man and a woman in union will reflect in a very real and
visible way the Presence of Jesus and the Mystery of the Incarnation, alive
through the manifestation of love in union with Christ.
The importance of the family cannot be underestimated. When the family
is strong, the Church is strong. The family as domestic Church, when modeling
Christ’s Church, will not only strengthen in faith and love, but will manifest
itself ultimately in a vibrant and growing Church on earth. J. A. Maten
Reflections from
St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Comparing the love of a parent
to the love God has for His children is
one way St. Thérèse of Lisieux understood her
relationship with God. Therese saw herself as a little
child, helpless as an infant and totally reliant on
the Love of God and Jesus, through the workings
of the Holy Spirit. St. Thérèse wrote, “I know God.
He is a father, a mother, who in order to be happy
must have his child upon his knee, resting on his
heart.” There is simplicity in her relationship with
God and it is this: to remain in God’s presence in
order to please Him. Parents understand well the
persistence of a toddler as the little one frantically
follows them around constantly underfoot, not
wanting to lose sight of the most important people
in their world. It is through these simple images
Thérèse guides common people to experience and
understand the simplicity of God’s love for us and
our love for Him.

Ray’s sense of humor and parenting advice comes
from years of experience with his own ten children.
Join us for an evening of laughs and tips on how to
raise morally upright children in today’s world.

Faith and Family Parenting
Workshops
January 30, February 6, February 13,
6:30-8:15 pm, Shrine Catholic HS Cafe
Today’s world is often hostile to living the faith.
While ministering to Shrine youth, certain questions
and topics keep rising to the surface. To aid parents
and families in addressing these issues in the home,
we are offering a series of workshops for adults. Hope
you can join us for the following:
January 30: I want to be Holy…but not just yet!
We will take a look into adolescent faith development,
what is ‘normal’ behavior, how faith develops into mature
faith, and how to support your children and adolescents
in their search for God.
February 6: Living in the Valley…Wish we were on the
Mountain!
How do we incorporate the spiritual into our everyday
lives? How do we help our children do the same? How do
we mesh the ‘head knowledge’ of our religious teachings
with the ‘heart’ knowledge of being a people of faith.
February 13: Yes! Catholics are Christians
What is the Church that Christ founded? If Jesus
founded one true Church, why do we have so many
different denominations and churches? Who is Christian
and what does that mean? Why do Catholics believe in
the Sacraments, and Mary? Where do the teachings of the
Church come from? We will delve into Scripture and
Tradition to answer these questions.
Superheroes of Faith and Justice
Film Series
February 19, 7:30 pm, Seton Hall
Join host Anthony Butina for February’s
“Superheroes of Faith and Justice” film series.
Recognizing February as Black History Month, we will
celebrate the life of the Mother of the Civil Rights
Movement by viewing and reflecting on the made
for TV movie, The Rosa Parks Story. Bring a drink and
snack to share. Be sure to mark your calendars for
next month’s feature on March 19: St. Patrick: The
Legend of Ireland.
Have you thought about your Lenten Resolutions?
Consider this for your list:
I will volunteer my time at the Shrine Fish Bake!
It is time again to call out all those kind souls who are able to give
some time on one (or all) of the Fridays during Lent. The jobs vary, but the
reward is constant! A great time to be had while helping the National Shrine!
Please consider one or more of the jobs listed below. If something
strikes your fancy, please make a check by it and make note of your Friday
availability. Then return the bottom half in the collection basket or to the
Grade School Office by Sunday, February 12.
The Fish bakes begin Friday, March 3 and run every Friday
through April 14, featuring fish from Superior Fish Market and our
own famous cheesy potatoes!
We need you!! Let’s make a difference together!

Saint Valentine’s Day History
Did you know………
1. St. Valentine’s Day is rooted in the Roman
festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on
February 15 in honor of the Roman god
Lupercus.
2. On Lupercalia, a young man would draw
the name of a young woman in a lottery and
then keep the woman as a companion for a year.
3. Pope Gelasius I changed the lottery to
have both men and women draw the names of
saints; who would then become their patron
saint for the year.
4. St. Valentine became the patron of this
new feast.
Find out who your patron saint is for the
coming year.
Come celebrate St. Valentine’s Day with us
on February 10 in the grade school gym
gym. See
the ad in today’s Herald for further details.

80 years.....
June 2006 will mark the 80th Anniversary of the first Mass celebrated at the
National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish.
THE SACRISTY continued from last week
Both the prie-dieu or sacristy cards and the altar-cards are hand-lettered in clear Papal Bull Script.
Six panels on each vesting-case have been inscribed with the vesting prayers illustrated by appropriate
symbols, original in design. These are done in relief, gilded with 23 karat gold leaf. The script is mediaeval.
The colors blue and red, typical of mediaeval illumination work, are predominant. It required extreme
diligence and patience to remove the wax finish only within the outlines of the design.
The two distinct sets of panels illustrate the two accepted interpretations of the vestments: the moral (the
virtues) and the allegorical (the Passion).
Panels of the Virtues
“Ad amictum . . .” Hope, “the helmet of salvation,” guards the mind against the flaming breath of Satan,
while the sword “which is the word of God,” wounds and hampers the serpent in its attack. The helmet mentioned in the prayer recalls the armor of the Christian as described by St. Paul (Eph. 6, 13-17). Thus the idea
of the Christian’s warfare has been partially developed in the following panels.
“Ad albam . . .” Innocence, obtained through the merits of Christ is symbolized by the doves at the
fountain. The keynote of this panel is the whiteness of innocence and the gold of pure joy. An Angel with
flaming wings, clad in golden armor—” the breast-plate of righteousness,” looks upward to God and holds his
hands extended in prayer. His wings are upborne by lilies; this idea was suggested by an ancient Oriental
symbol of aspiration.
“Ad cingulum . . .” Chastity. A lily amid a red thorny spray adorns the initial. The thorns are mysteriously
flowering at the tips—as if to suggests the reward of chastity’s rigor. Below is a golden fortress. Chastity has
the frailty of a flower that must be jealously guarded, and the strength of an embattled fortress.
“Ad manipulum . . .” Sorrow and toil. The symbols of toil—thistles, wheat and a hoe, are combined in the
initial. Below, an Angel, holding “the pearl of great price” in the palm of his hand, indicates with joyous,
wondering attitude the greatness of the eternal reward.
“Ad stolam . . .” Justice and immortality. The torch of good example is held high to guide many through
the night.
“Ad casulum . . .” Charity. The parted flame leaping heavenward and bending earthward symbolizes the
love of God and of man. Charity obtains the final victory over the enemy: thus, the banner, and the dead
serpent below it.
The side panels decorated with redbirds, robins and grapevines symbolize the joyousness of the soul in
the vine which is Christ.
Panels of the Passion
A correlated theme is developed in these panels. The allegorical sense of the
vestments is illustrated within the initial letter, while below the divine attributes of the
One Who suffered “all these things” are recalled.
“Ad amictum . . .” The veil with which His eyes were covered is draped before the
initial. Below is the traditional Eye of God. While men veiled His eyes. He was gazing at
their past and their future.
“Ad albam ...” The fool’s garment is depicted above; the Book of Wisdom with seven

Christ was silent because Herod’s darkened mind could not have understood words of

Thanks To Our Advertisers
Many parishioners do not know that the cost of printing our bulletin each week is carried by our
advertisers. By taking advertising space, these people make possible one means of communication
with the people of our Parish. We owe them a real debt of gratitude. We encourage you to patronize
our advertisers. Tell them where you saw their ad and thank them for supporting our Parish. Obviously
these people advertise their business to get business. We need to show them that advertising in our
bulletin is a good investment and will bring a return. Encourage them to continue to help us provide a
quality Parish bulletin for you.
