Fall into the Next Festival Season By Leisa Vescarelli
Summer—we look
forward to it for
months, and then
it’s gone all too
quickly in a blur of
sun-soaked days
and long sultry
nights. As the dog
days drift away and
summer festival
season winds
down, September
proves to be one of
the hottest months
to experience the
arts in Edmonton.
As the river valley turns
shades of crimson and
orange, Edmonton’s artistic
community is in full bloom,
embarking on a fresh new
season of programming.
Mother Nature cooperates
with mild temperatures and
plenty of sunshine, making
autumn a great time to explore
the city’s sights and sounds.
Embrace the turn of seasons by spending Labour Day
weekend at Symphony Under
the Sky in beautiful William
Hawrelak Park. Settle in on
the grassy slopes surrounding
the Heritage Amphitheatre—
the largest of its kind in Western Canada—and kick back
as the harmonic sounds of the
Edmonton Symphony Orchestra float through the lush river
valley from September 3-6.
Audience favourite Bob Bernhardt conducts the orchestra
through five concerts over the
course of four days—a diverse
line-up that spans everything
from Beethoven to Billy Joel.
This year marks the 24th
anniversary of the Edmonton
International Film Festival,
a friendly event that features
world-class programming,
and celebrates all things cinematic. From September 24 to
October 2, immerse yourself
in a world of never-beforeseen films, parties, panels
and scads of other official
and unofficial events for film
enthusiasts. The schedule
of independent flicks from
around the globe includes 55
feature-length films, and 110
short films programmed into
feature-length packages. Visit
www.edmontonfilmfest.com
for the skinny on how and
where to nab tickets and
passes to all the films and
events during festival week.
For an out of the ordinary
musical experience, don’t
miss the unexpectedly awesome Accordion Extravaganza.
For 16 years, The Edmonton
Accordion Society has staged
this annual showcase of accordions. Beyond the popular
polka, expect a multi-generational line-up of musicians
guaranteed to get your toes
tapping to light-hearted and
freewheeling renditions of
old favourites and original
works. The Extravaganza
runs from September 24-26,
kicking off with the Accordion
Grandstand. The jam-packed
event features a collaboration of artists playing, such
as The Big Band, 17 year-old
virtuoso Michael Bridge and
an accordion accompanied
performance by the Mattierin
School of Irish Dancing. Visit
www.edmontonaccordion.com
for complete event, schedule
and ticket information.
Then start making plans for
your return visit to beautiful,
magical “Festival City.” For

YOUR STORIES
“I took the ultimate island challenge: a
hike to the summit of Gros Piton, almost
3,000 feet. The trail of treacherous, loose and
moss-covered rocks rises near-vertical in places.
A guide is required to lead groups through the
UNESCO World Heritage site. We stop at the
halfway point. The view is as gorgeous as I imagine
the Garden of Eden. Light crystals bounce off the
water like shards of glass. The Pitons, in sharp
contrast to the turquoise water, shine like black
beauty. The hike is arduous—five to six hours
roundtrip. I returned to my hotel exhausted
and aching, but wearing an ‘I Conquered’
T-shirt.”—Debi Lander, “St. Lucia: Small

Seize the Sun
It’s appropriate that I’m introducing
you to our August issue, filled with tips and
inspiration on how to end the sweetest season
with a bang, from Kona on the Big Island
of Hawaii. Talk about a place optimized for
round-the-clock fun in the sun (and moonlight).
My family and I spent a 16-hour period that
kicked off with an epic breakfast comprised of
ingredients grown mere feet from the kitchen. That was followed
by snorkelling with parrot fish, eel and green turtles. We then left
the depths for a mind-blowing aerial tour of the youngest and
(appropriately) most hyperactive of the Hawaiian Islands.
Cal at Paradise Helicopters knows the island as well as anyone and spends his days revealing the Big Island’s little-known
secret: it boasts 11 of the planet’s 13 climate zones. This means
a ratio of experiences-to-land mass unmatched on the planet—
including the most striking: flowing lava, to which local heli
companies get so close that your eyes get dry.
After a quick bite watching a psychedelic sunset in downtown
Kona, we prepared to get wet again, this time to night-dive with
giant manta rays coaxed to the surface with plankton-attracting
spotlights. In Kona, one day can easily feel like an entire
vacation if your aim is to optimize your time.
This was my aim today and our aim with this issue. We,
of course, celebrate the Big Island (and WestJet’s other aloha
destinations) with our Value Guide to Hawaii on page 18. Our new
Value Guide section will kick off every issue, spotlighting WestJet’s best destinations for less. And yes, we fully encourage you to
test our “24 Hours for $24” recommendation… just maybe not on
your honeymoon or anything resembling a romantic getaway.
We also help you make the most of the last month of summer
in Canada on page 33. Writer Eric Rumble serves up classic
destinations in six Canadian cities and taps prominent and
proud locals for their strategies for doing their towns right
when the clock is ticking.
Enjoy this issue and the rest of your summer and, as always,
please share your tips and stories at upmagazine.com.
Happy trails.

Your time is of
the essence
16
WestJetters spend a great deal of time working hard
to make sure your flight arrives on time. We are committed
to a great guest experience, which means respecting your
time without ever compromising safety.
WestJet has been ranked among North America’s top five
airlines for on-time performance (OTP) every July for the
past five years. We want to keep that sunny ranking all year,
but we know there are a few challenges—like the weather—
that are out of our control. To make up for Mother Nature,
we work extra hard on the factors we can control.
OTP is a team effort, and we need your help, too. Simply
checking in and boarding on time helps us to get you from
point A to B on schedule. Since one delayed flight can affect
numerous other flights throughout the day, you’re also helping hundreds of future guests to take off on time.
Even if your flight is running late, you can help us to
make up time wherever possible by watching the departure
screens, listening for announcements and staying close
to your gate. You can count on time-conscious WestJetters
to do everything they can to get you on your way as soon
as possible.
To find the recommended check-in times for Canadian,
U.S. and international flights, please go to westjet.com and
click on Travel Info > Travel Information > Check-in Times.

No economic roller-coaster can change the fact that Hawaii is
heaven on Earth. But it can put paradise on sale. That’s why now

It’s one of those “only in Hawaii” stories: a five-year-old moves to the Islands

her kinetic lust for life, Anastasia Ashley (pictured left) knows how to shop smart. Here

favourite places in the New York borough where
he lives, works and lets his imagination run wild

BELFAST-RAISED OLIVER JEFFERS liked New York from the first time he visited
a summer camp upstate as a boy. And he still liked it when he relocated there full
time to pursue his craft after the commercial success and slew of awards following his first few children’s books—even though he and his girlfriend didn’t really
know their neighbours. “People were always moving in and out of our Manhattan
building; it was hard to get to know anyone,” he says. But the author and illustrator of such kids’ classics as How to Catch a Star (2004), Lost and Found (2005)
and this year’s The Heart and the Bottle, really fell for New York when he moved
to Brooklyn Heights across the East River almost two years ago. Besides the epic
views of Manhattan’s skyline, he revels in an abundance of culinary gems, cycling trails and an artist community that inspires its own. Small wonder then that
Jeffers is one of its biggest cheerleaders. “Everything that’s exciting in New York
is happening in Brooklyn,” he says. Here’s where the hottest star in children’s
picture books fuels his creative fire.
OUTDOORS “When I first visited New
York, a friend took me to the Brooklyn
Promenade for the best view of the city.
Today, our apartment backs right onto
it and whenever we have friends over
for a meal, we don’t have any outdoor
space, so we just go there and congregate.” (South of the Brooklyn Bridge)
SHOP “I love the Brooklyn Flea market
in Fort Greene. My fiancée, Suzanne,
cringes whenever we go there. If it’s
old and orange and leather, I’ll buy it.
It has great old clothes, too. It’s exactly
what it promises.” (176 Lafayette Ave.;
brooklynflea.com)
DRINK “The Brooklyn Inn is a great
neighbourhood bar—a classic bar. It’s
close to my studio and has a great mix
of people.” (148 Hoyt St.; 718-522-2525)

We sat down with It’s Just Lunch Dating Specialist
Jacquie Brownridge, to discuss a twist on a popular element in the
dating scene: the person who has the savvy to provide singles advice on how to
meet people — the “wing-woman.” Jacquie shines some light on today’s dating
scene and what singles need to consider to be successful when finding that
special someone.
What do you tell

Rule number one: Never talk
about a past relationship. It
can instill feelings of jealousy,
awkwardness, or insecurity in
seconds. If it comes up, give a
brief answer and change the
subject. Studies show people
find you more interesting when
you ask questions about them.
If you don’t know what to ask,
just pause a moment to think

When we started It’s Just Lunch eighteen
years ago, singles simply introduced
themselves and began talking – done.
Now, couples chat, email, instant

makes it easier than ever to stay in touch
with someone you already know –

someone you don’t.

Q+A
Flying High
WestJet pilot Steve Will takes a break
from Boeing 737s and talks about flying
with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds
From flying combat missions over Serbia as part of
Operation Allied Force, to lifting national spirits as a member
of the Canadian Forces’ iconic Snowbirds demonstration
squadron, WestJet First Officer Steve Will has a long and
storied career in the air. A WestJet pilot since 2008, Lt. Col.
Will was called back by the Snowbirds earlier this year to
serve a three-month stint as Commanding Officer—an honour
his employer supported. We caught up with the prodigious
pilot as he wrapped up his most recent tour with the famous
formation flyers.
Out of all the aircraft you’ve flown, what’s your favourite?
Do the Snowbird pilots use call signs the way they do in Top Gun?
All the fighter pilots do, and most of the Snowbird guys do, too.
What’s yours?
“Swill.” There are little rules and regulations on [informal] call signs,
all unofficial; many are a play on your name. The other way you get
them is through a conspicuous act of buffoonery….One guy I used
to fly with was “Dune” because he wrecked his commanding officer’s
jeep in the desert in the Gulf War.
“The day
you don't
walk out
to the jet
with a smile
on your face
and feel
excited about
flying, it's
time to
leave the
Air Force”
Janet Trost photo
The CF-18 Hornet, hands down. It has so much power, so much
sheer flying ability, that it becomes an extension of your own body.
If you want to put the airplane somewhere in time and space, you
just do it. It’s just a beautiful machine. Having said that, some of my
fondest memories are also flying on the wing and leading the Snowbirds.
There’s something about flying in a nine-plane formation and doing
loops and rolls, or leading the formation and having the wingmen
around you following your cues. Everything you do, they follow
nd mimic perfectly. You all become really close.
Is there a specific piece of advice from your military training
that you’ve kept with you through the years?
A wise fighter pilot colonel once told me, “Know your numbers cold.”
What he meant is, you better be totally prepared every time you strap
an airplane on. Those were his words; you don’t climb into these jets,
you “strap them on your back.” At the beginning of our training, he
said, “The day you don’t walk out to the jet with a smile on your
face and feel excited about flying, it’s time to leave the Air Force.”
A UG / 1 0 | upm aga zine .co m
How about passenger jets? Do you still walk out to them
with a smile on your face?
26
You know what? I do. I’m a pilot at heart. You hear people talking
about moving on from the Air Force to the commercial airlines and
saying the flying isn’t going to be fun, and I think that’s ridiculous.
Sure it’s not going to be loops and rolls, it’s not going to be dogfighting in an F-18, but why would you think it would be? It’s a different
job, a different mission, but it’s still flying a jet. It’s still the professionalism of getting into an aircraft and doing a good job. Every time
I fly a 737, I try to improve, to do things better, smarter, ultimately
safely, but also economically. We’re all still focused on a mission,
and in that way, it’s very much like the Air Force.

52-story west office tower has been
Canada’s tallest building outside of
Toronto for more than a quarter century.
CALGARY TOWER
At 626 feet, the former Husky Tower was the tallest structure
in Canada when it opened in 1968, but was surpassed by a
Toronto skyscraper less than a year later. It remained top dog
in downtown Calgary until it was finally outdone in 1983. Soon
it’ll be out of the top five, but it’s still as iconic as ever.
EIGHTH AVENUE PLACE
Rising from the ashes of Penny Lane Mall and
the original Cowboys saloon, the first of two
planned office towers will reach 49 stories
and contain more than a million square feet of
office space (plus another 50,000 for retailers
and restaurateurs). It’s the city’s first high-rise
office building to be pre-certified LEED gold
for core and shell construction due to the
planned holistic approach of the buildings’
owners and tenants. The building is slated
to open next year.
THE BOW
The practical purpose of this new corporate monolith brings together the
3,300 employees of natural gas giant EnCana and oil company Cenovus
(formerly one company before they split last fall) under one roof. Scheduled
to be completed in 2011, Canada’s fourth-tallest skyscraper (58 stories and
810 feet) will be no less than a crescent-shaped testament to the country’s
oil and gas capital’s global heft. Case in point: the foundation pour alone
took 36 consecutive hours and more than 14,000 cubic metres of concrete,
making it the third-largest skyscraper foundation on the planet.
ARRIVA 1
Originally, real estate heavyweight John Torode envisioned
four condos to revitalize Victoria Park, the neighbourhood alongside the expanding Stampede grounds,
beginning with this 36-story glass condo. Construction
on a larger second tower stopped abruptly last year and
Torode declared insolvency five months later, becoming
the city’s poster boy for the Great Recession’s fallout.
NATIONAL MUSIC CENTRE
The $94 million needed to enshrine the legendary King Eddy Hotel
and build a grandiose stage for the Cantos Music Foundation’s amazing 1,000-piece collection is still being raised, but the schematics paint
an enthralling picture. The design aims to emulate the landscape with
conceptual nods to hoodoos and grain elevators, and to consider the
entire facility itself as a giant instrument. The five-story, 100,000-sq.-ft.
building promises performance spaces and recording studios throughout, and lots of interpretive museum space to showcase the Country
Music Hall of Fame collection and Cantos’ trove of keyboard instruments and vintage electronic equipment.
EAST VILLAGE
Redevelopment proposals call for a pedestrian promenade that cuts diagonally across the long-blighted
49-acre grid, linking the future National Music Centre
to the newly landscaped river walk beside the city’s
birthplace at Fort Calgary, and attracting commercial
projects to create a mixed-use community that is walkable, architecturally innovative and built to show off
the nearby confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers.

This is not your parent’s fairmont. In fact, the 377room marble-and-glass beauty on the edge of Coal Harbour
is the vanguard of the company’s new direction: less paisley,
more pulse. Opening just before the Winter Olympics, the
property’s North Shore views and proximity to festivities
quickly impressed the first batch of guests. The massive glass
doors and gleaming white marble lit up by a roaring fireplace are reminiscent of a flush art gallery, while the delicate
sounds of a perfectly tuned white Fazioli piano enchant you
as if you stepped into a concert hall. Friendly, multilingual
staff help guests settle quickly in their rooms, all clean lines
and subdued wood-and-stone accents. Amazingly, 70 per
cent of the property’s units feature unobstructed Burrard Inlet
views and the iconic harbour traffic that plies its waters and
skies. If you tire of the vistas, impressive in-room technology
will close the drapes, set the appropriate mood lighting and

The Grouse Grind
Forget just looking at Vancouver’s mountainous bounty. A quick drive to the North Shore
deposits you at the foot of the city’s famous
gauntlet-on-the-urban fringe. The Grouse Grind
packs more than 850 metres of elevation gain
and ends at about 1,120 metres above sea level.
The steep trail is just shy of three kilometres, with
2,830 stairs and twice as many gnarly tree roots,
rock faces and verdant alpine canopies. Mercifully,
there are three restaurants up top and a gondola to
ride back down.
Grouse Grind

“I take my daughter to Heritage Park Historical Village. We ride the authentic steam
train, get off at the antique midway and
ride the Ferris wheel, caterpillar and swings
as many times as she likes. There’s never
much in the way of lineups, and once she’s
had her fill of all that, we get an ice cream

Also, consistently magical.” —Chris Turner,

any of my kids or friends along the magical

Prince’s Island Park. There we sit on the

where they’ve just added to the Prehistoric

The Forks
Early aboriginals used the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red rivers
as a rendezvous, and modern Winnipeggers have followed suit with
gusto. There are historical exhibits and artifacts, peaceful gardens and
river perches, an artisan and food market, ongoing festivals, community events and possibly the country’s best downtown skate park. Even
Burton Cummings in a Speedo couldn’t draw this much attention on a
sunny afternoon.

“Whiteshell Provincial Park is beautiful anytime, but it’s really quite special around early
fall. You canoe into a lake, portage to the next,
camp out on an island and, if wild rice is plentiful, you can go out and pick it. Entire families
would pick up and leave from my community
and go live there for two weeks or a month in
early September… It was a pretty special time
for the Ojibwa communities from the Interlake
and along the east side of Lake Winnipeg.”
—Phil Fontaine, three-time National Chief of
the Assembly of First Nations

Provincial Park. I have a horse, and there are
miles of paths to take the horse on. When
I’m out there in the middle of all this rugged

begin with some vegan raw food at Crudessence. It’s the perfect destination if you love
to eat, but are very conscious of what you
put into your body. We then take a breath

experience! It’s incredible to think we have a

few years ago, my friend Scott and I were
driving along a gravel road in the foothills
southwest of Calgary when he turned up
his stereo.
… A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one;
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground…
“Check out this song, you’re going to love it,”
Scott said.
The song was “One Great City” by Winnipeg local
sons, The Weakerthans. Knowing I was born in that
Prairie town and often spoke of it fondly, Scott started
smiling mischievously.
… The Guess Who suck, the Jets were lousy anyway…
I’m sure Scott believed the lyrics, a laundry list of Winnipeg banalities, would be a good and just ribbing for
being born in Canada’s answer to Cleveland, the butt of
jokes on The Simpsons and The Office. Hell, even a hip
indie rocker knew enough to capture his angst in song.
… And in the turning lane, someone’s stalled again…
Instead of being insulted, I smiled and my eyes stung
a little for the nostalgia. I got the joke that Scott missed:
it was, and still is, the most beautiful love song written
to the city. And when it plays in bars or at packed Weakerthans shows across Canada, exiled Winnipeggers will
link arms, like the Irish when faced with “Danny Boy,”
and harmonize over the nasal lament:
… I... hate...Winnipe-e-e-e-g.
And really I can’t blame anyone for not getting the
’Peg. The song’s title was lifted from a tourism slogan
for the city, “Winnipeg, One Great City,” that sums up the
city’s identity crisis. As far as I know, the slogan was most
often read with an implied question mark. Or maybe an
ellipsis. But never, ever with an exclamation mark.
And what made it more confusing was that the “One
Great City” branding followed another attempt, “Love Me,
Love My Winnipeg”—which had an unsteady edge to it,
like a girlfriend demanding, “Love me, love my stuffed
unicorn collection.”
Stuck halfway between the established success and
stability of the East and the West’s youthful potential,
Winnipeg had become Canada’s Jan Brady, the desperate middle child in need of its own voice.
I’m thinking about this as I wander along the banks
of the Assiniboine River in downtown Winnipeg. With
the fragrance of lilacs hanging on the humid afternoon
air like a sheer curtain, it seems my birthplace’s identity
is simply defined, as it always has been, by the brownred waterways that run through it, capillary-like.
… A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one;
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground…
« Écoute bien cette chanson, tu vas l’adorer », me dit Scott.
C’était One Great City (Une ville formidable) interprétée
… The Guess Who suck, the Jets were lousy anyway…
… And in the turning lane, someone’s stalled again…
… I... hate...Winnipe-e-e-e-g.
slogan touristique pour la ville « Winnipeg, One Great City, »
« Love Me, Love My Winnipeg » (Aime-moi, aime mon
Locals cool off with ice cream and nostalgia at the Bridge Drive-In.

Winnipeg, like the Red and Assiniboine rivers, can
be compared to a heroine in a Chekov story: steady,
slow-moving, capable of outlandish spectacle (or
danger) and slow in revealing her heart.
I’ve been enticed back to check out the Manitoba
Homecoming 2010 celebrations. With the province
turning 140 (who has time to wait for 150?), government tourism officials created the year-long event to
help increase visits. The party planners include Travel
Manitoba, Tourism Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. Their goal is simple: show off the positive energy
and reinvention flowing through Winnipeg and around
Manitoba to current residents, visitors and, maybe
specifically, those of us who had left. Locally inspired
events have been going all year, and I’m in my old
hometown to be a part of arguably the most iconic:
The World’s Largest Social.
Socials, a Manitoba tradition, are a kind of fundraiser,
usually held in community halls or hockey rinks, with
ticket sale proceeds, raffles and drinks raising from
$5,000 to $15,000, depending on the number of attendees and the relative size of their wallets and livers.
With a few hours before helping rewrite the record
books, I met up with my friend Doug, who has, despite
a few attempts to leave, remained a Winnipegger. As
we sit enjoying our coffee and catching up, I mention to
him that the city seems different. It has a confidence….
“But not a swagger, never a swagger,” Doug quickly
interjects.
I mention rumours of the NHL returning to town
(by way of the Jets returning after a terrible relocation
to Phoenix), and Doug’s answer surprises me.
“It would be nice,” he begins. “But, you know, maybe
losing the Jets was a good thing. Too many people

thought that the team was our identity. It’s almost like
the city woke up a couple of years after they left and
realized that it had moved on from the breakup and it
was okay.”
The core of Winnipeg’s revived confidence is located at
the wishbone junction of the Red and Assiniboine. Once
the site of trading forts, the area is now home to The
Forks. Built 20 years ago, The Forks rose from reclaimed
railway land in downtown Winnipeg. Echoing Ottawa’s
Byward Market or Granville Island in Vancouver, it was
designed to bring people back downtown and to breathe
new life into a part of the city that was largely forgotten.
The scrubbed warehouse buildings that now house
high-end restaurants and shopping, and its pathways,
skate park and stages are more than a magnet for visiting creative classes. They also gave Winnipeggers a
reason to see the rivers fondly as a place to meet, stroll
or simply contemplate. The grudges of past overflows
seem to have been dropped.
But Winnipeg’s new groove isn’t localized to the obvious gentrification. Up once-crumbling Main Street and
into downtown, new bars and restaurants have popped
up in spaces once leased by business equipment companies or tired offices.
Walking at night in the Exchange District, once a foolhardy endeavour, now feels like early 1990s Seattle, with
flocks of the stylishly unkempt moving between clubs to
catch a set from the next great indie folk/punk/ska/hiphop breakthrough. Studios, coffee houses and boutiques
are opening with surreal fervour, run by young pioneers
lured by the city’s reasonable rent and the gritty artistic
palate. On Corydon Avenue, I laugh at the Rolaids-worthy
combo of three sushi restaurants and an East Indian joint
shoehorned on the same block, along with a long-standing pasta place and a gelato shop.
quartier de La Fourche (The Forks).

Leaving the ’Peg’s culinary culture behind, I turn my
attention to tonight’s main event. Having arrived at the
World’s Largest Social held at the Winnipeg Convention
Centre, one of 63 locations throughout the province, I
introduce myself to Marnie Strath, who coordinated the
event. She is euphoric, and yet still modest as she describes the concept of inviting people back to Manitoba.
“Your parents still stay here, or you still have friends
here. And everybody wants to come back, because
there’s something very down-home about this city,”
she explains above the din of ’80s music. “It’s not like
Calgary—not that I have anything against Calgary, I
have family who live there—but it always seems very
transient. It just doesn’t have the same roots.”
It’s true. In the crowd, I see familiar archetypes: jivedancing middle-agers spin alongside young dudes who
do little more than shuffle their feet uncomfortably in an
effort to impress mini-skirted dates on the dance floor.
Among the swirling mass I spot “Dancing Gabe,” something of a Winnipeg celebrity for his routines performed
at sporting events—what, 15, 20 years ago? The queue
to be photographed with him is completely understandable. And patrolling along the party’s periphery is a Big
Lebowski look-alike.
This diverse gathering of 2,100 in Winnipeg joined
62 other socials held across the province that mid-May
Saturday night for a combined 25,000 revellers. At
night’s end, organizers and local media chirped how
“we did it.” Others question if there was ever a record
to beat. But that’s beside the point, unless some bureaucrat decides to laud the achievement in a slogan
on a sign outside city limits. Even I’d be able to write
a protest anthem about that one.
font un peu plus que battre inconfortablement des pieds ;

Cash will not be accepted.

What’s in a name?
Tout est dans le nom!
Tim*, TAC Crew Chief, Calgary
Tim*, chef du personnel de piste, Calgary
The WestJet Turn Around Crew (TAC) team at the Calgary
airport has a reputation for doing their best to transport your
baggage safely and efficiently – regardless of rain, snow, sleet
and extreme heat.
One of the lesser-known facts about this dedicated team
is their mastery of nicknames. Agents come about their
nicknames in different ways. Some agents, such as Cable
Guy (our very own Jim Carrey look-alike) get their names
from the characters they look like. Others earn them, like
The GOMfather, who got this name by reciting excerpts from
the ground operations manual (GOM) when needed. However,
most agents get their names from tweaks to their real names.
Our TAC team nicknames have included Fresh, DC-10,
McLovin, Billz, Hair-Do, Pom Pom, E-Walk, Banana
and Cable Guy.
The fun nicknames serve a practical purpose. Time restraints
and the high number of TAC agents with similar names can
make long formal names a drawback.
When you look out the window at our TAC team waving
goodbye to your flight, you can rely on their camaraderie and
teamwork to get the job done. This team of many monikers is
working hard to do their best by you and your baggage.
de piste Fresh, DC-10, McLovin, Billz, Hair-Do, Pom Pom,
*Incidentally, Tim’s favourite WestJet destination is Maui and he
enjoys our snack pack when he flies.
