open on the beach in front of
Resorts Atlantic City, sharing
between them a stage for concerts in the sand. Nikki Beach,
a multi-tiered club with locations in Miami, Marbella, St.

Fort Lauderdale.
The Tropicana Beach Bar

The new bars join four
existing bars: Caesars Sand
Box Beach Bar, The Beach Bar
at Trump Plaza, Atlantic City
Hilton Beach Club, and Bally’s
Bikini Beach Bar.
At Caesars Sand Box Beach
Bar, you’ll find beach chairs,
umbrellas and private cabanas
(for rent), along with non-stop
live music seven nights a week,
nightly drink specials and specialty drinks.
The Beach Bar at Tr ump
Plaza provides live music,
giveaways, and a menu featuring seafood, sushi, sandwiches,
salads, snacks, and beer and
frozen drinks. This summer,
the Beach Bar will be 4,000
square feet larger, and will feature an expanded full-service
bar, a 12 by 24 foot raw bar and
grill, and a bigger dance floor
with live entertainment daily.
The Atlantic City Hilton
Beach Club offers plenty of
opportunities for relaxation,
including private cabanas (you
can even get a massage) and
lounging beneath wooden
gazebos. There will be free
beach concerts and other special events, food and drinks,
and promotions and prize giveaways.
Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar, on
the newly expanded beach
across the Boardwalk from
Bally’s Atlantic City, serves up
tropical drinks, live entertainment, festive menus, and promotions, activities and events.
Did You Know?
The U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers in early 2004
dredged 3.2 million cubic
yards of sand from the ocean
and used it to widen the
Atlantic City beach by 200
feet. In addition, dune grass
was planted along the Boardwalk. The efforts are part of a
project to provide coastal storm
damage reduction and shoreline protection, and will be
repeated periodically over the
next 50 years.

as the line inched along
the velvet barrier, while a
few steps inside the music pounded. It was another rockin’ Saturday night in Atlantic City and
this scene was duplicated all
over town.
An ‘Always Turned On’
Atlantic City is living up to its
signature catchphrase. The
resort’s once famous seaside galas
have given way to clubs, bars and
discos that range from sedate to
sensual—and events like body
painting at Trump Taj Mahal’s
Casbah are a case in point.
Whether you prefer your
nightlife jazzy, revved up or star
struck, Atlantic City has it.
Casbah alone attracts 2,000
per night on winter weekends and
twice that in the summer. With
hours from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
and 6 a.m., you can literally dance
all night. Professional dancers
dangle from cages, and with a
ceiling that is virtually invisible
due to the lighting and special
effects, this nightclub is truly cosmic. The Casbah attracts its share
of celebrity drop-ins, including
professional boxers who compete
in town.
Perched on the picturesque
Frank S. Farley Marina, The Wave
at Trump Marina offers panoramic views, but the focus is on the
stage that showcases hot area
bands. The Wave draws a mix of
young singles and a slightly older
crowd, especially on ‘80s Night.
The third Trump property,
Trump Plaza, offers an alternative
to dancing. Its Boardwalker
Lounge is a favorite gathering
place, open 24 hours a day on the
weekends. The Poker Bar, located
inside the East Tower Casino,
offers pub snacks to munch while
watching the 58-square-foot video
wall or playing video poker on the
bar-top slot machines.
Atlantic City’s newest
nightspot is The Quarter, Tropicana’s multi-million dollar entertainment, dining and retail complex. There you’ll find The Sound
of Philadelphia (TSOP), a restaurant/club that showcases some of
the hottest bands around, as well
as a karaoke bar and ethnic restaurant/night club combinations
including an authentic Irish pub
and Cuban and Russian-themed
offerings. For cool jazz, head
upstairs to the Top of the Trop,
with entertainment nightly and
one of the best views in town.
Move on to Mixx at Borgata, a
nightclub with a dual identity.
T
Mixx serves Latin/Asian fusion
cuisine until late night, when the
specialty of the house becomes a
dance club fusion of high-energy
excitement and infinite possibility. Look for celebrities here, too.
The Borgata is a favorite hangout
for stars like Bruce Willis and
Cameron Diaz when they’re in
town.
Just off the Boardwalk on Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard,
you’ll find the Club Tru Entertainment Complex. The club’s
five bars include a sports pub, a
VIP floor, a martini lounge, and
Studio Six, Atlantic City’s famed
alternative tiki and karaoke
lounge. Two dance floors, each
with its own DJ and serious sound
system, double the music
options—R&B on one side,
house and techno on the main
floor. Studio Six, in particular, is
an after hours club, just warming
up after most bars announce last
call. Arrive before 1 a.m. to get a
bar stool. By 3 a.m., there’s a line
out the door.
A short distance away at New
York Avenue and the Boardwalk,
Déjà Vu pounds out an energetic
beat through the night until dawn.
Dancing isn’t for everyone,
which is why Atlantic City offers
some distinctive places to chill out
with a cold drink. The Gladiator
Sports Bar at Caesars is open
seven days a week with entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.
There’s no cover and plenty of
food on the menu. Nearby is the
hip and trendy Blue Martini at
Bally’s Atlantic City. This chic
setting offers more than 100 variations of martinis, top-shelf liquor,
live music, and a bar with a builtin frosted ice rail – perfect for
keeping the chill in your glass
while your night heats up. You can
also drop anchor at the Hilton’s
Dizzy Dolphin, a nautically
themed lounge with live entertainment and an extensive variety of
spirits, including “fintastic” signature drinks. Resorts Atlantic
City offers live entertainment in
Tuxedos Lobby Bar every Saturday night.
Harrah’s Atlantic City invites
you to discover Eden, the
bewitching new lounge that features flair bartending at The Sapphire Bar, plus their newest offering, Xhibition, boasting 28 plasma screens and live music. The
Sands heats up the casino floor
with the hot Swingers Lounge,
right in the center of the action.
There’s no shortage of entertainment in Atlantic City. Now the
only challenge is where to start.

TEXAS HOLD ‘EM

hey’re playing it on college campuses, at bachelor parties, on TV and,
of course, in casinos.
‘It’ is Texas Hold ‘em, the
latest poker craze to sweep the
nation, and its popularity is taking Atlantic City by storm.
“Nothing is more popular
right now,” according to Tom
Gitto, poker manager at the
Trump Taj Mahal. “Last year,
Seven Card Stud was the game

of our clientele. This year, 85

‘em. And the demographics
have shifted too. Last year, the
overwhelming majority was
older gentlemen; today it’s a
50-50 split age wise, with lots
of women joining the fray.
“We’ve even hosted an Asian
singles group here,” Gitto said.
“More than 500 singles played
poker, and the event was such a
success that the group has since
planned three others.”
Atlantic City casinos are,
quite naturally, responding to
the Texas Hold ‘em craze with
lessons, expanded poker areas
and daily tournaments. For
example:
Bally’s Poker Parlor offers
16 tables, eight each for Texas
Hold ‘em and Stud. And, there’s
a No Limit Texas Hold ‘em
game, with blinds of $1 and $3
and buy-ins of $100 to $300,
beginning Friday afternoons.
Pai Gow, Let It Ride, Caribbean
Stud, Three-Card Poker tables
are also in place.
Borgata offers No Limit
Texas Hold ‘em tournaments
with different buy-in levels
every weekday, and gaming
tables for Pai Gow, Let It Ride,
and Three-Card.
Trump Taj Mahal is the official host of the U.S. Poker
Championship, held every fall,
and the Trump Classic, held in
December. There are daily
poker tournaments and lessons based on group size.
A Poker Bar in the East

Meeting and Convention Attendance
Takes Off In Atlantic City
ny real estate agent
will tell you that the
most important things
to look for when
selecting property are location,
location, location. The same
sage advice can be applied
when choosing a site for a
meeting or convention.
With shopping, entertainment, fine dining, gaming, and
a beach and Boardwalk within
easy walking distance of the
Atlantic City Convention Center – meeting and convention
facilities are also available at
many area casinos and hotels;
see the contact box for more
information - it comes as no
surprise that trade show planners are deciding to move their
shows to Atlantic City, or to
bring them back year after year.
As the organizer of EP
Henry’s Middle Atlantic Hardscaping Trade Show put it,
“Atlantic City has a lot to offer
and definitely helped our attendance. The city provided a draw
that may have prompted attendees to stay longer or overnight
A
and return to the show.” The
show moved to Atlantic City
from a smaller facility in Pennsylvania, and has since made
Atlantic City its home.
The Atlantic City Classic
Car Show has met in Atlantic
City for 32 years. An organizer
there credits the Convention
Center’s professional staff –
and the phenomenal turnout
year after year, including a 30percent increase in attendance
in 2004 – for his decision to
host the show in Atlantic City
every year.
Location isn’t the only thing
the Convention Center has
going for it. Consider these
deal makers:
Atlantic City is
conveniently located within
a few hours’ drive of nearly
one-third of the nation’s
population and 20 percent
of the country’s business
addresses.

Beach – race to open new locations; and where a new generation of traveler, 20-somethings
from New York City, Baltimore
and Philadelphia, finds a home
away from home in a region with
everything it needs – sandy
beaches, sex appeal and status –
to become the Monte Carlo of the
East Coast. In fact, you can make
it a true home away from home,
by renting a fully furnished oneor two-bedroom vacation condominium at Skyline Tower. It’s
Atlantic City, and you’d better
believe it’s always turned on.
The Borgata Effect
Little did anyone suspect the
chain reaction the Borgata,
Atlantic City’s first new casino in
13 years, would set off when it
opened in July 2003. Jeffrey
Vasser, executive director of the
Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, characterizes the
resulting growth boom as a game
of one-upmanship in
w h i c h everyone is a winner.
“Each new project – the Borgata, Resorts’ Rendezvous Tower,
The Walk and The Quarter – has
taken Atlantic City to a new
level,” Vasser said.
What’s unfolding today isn’t a
story of ‘out with the old and in
with the new,’ but rather a story
of improving on things that made
Atlantic City famous: worldclass entertainment, shopping,
dining, gambling and, of course,
the most celebrated Boardwalk
and beach in the world.

Penrod’s Elbo Room at Resorts.
The House of Blues, scheduled to open its largest venue yet
in time for July 4th, will feature a
casino and branded poker room,
a southern-style restaurant, a
multi-level music hall, nightclub,
beach bar and outdoor lounge,
and a private membership club.
Also opening this summer are
Nikki Beach – Atlantic City,
deemed by the London Observer
as the “sexiest party on earth,”
and Penrod’s Elbo Room, modeled after the oldest bar in Fort
Lauderdale. Both will be on the
beachfront at Resorts Atlantic
City, and nestled between them
will be an entertainment complex
for summer concerts in the sand.
And the best thing about it
all? There’s plenty more on the
way.
In 2006, headline-garnering
improvements to the city will
include The Pier at Caesars and
Borgata’s $200 million expansion.
The Pier at Caesars, a $175

Inside The Pier, shoppers will find
a world-class roster of elite retailers, including first-in-the-region
appearances by Gucci, Hugo Boss,
Louis Vuitton, Armani A/X, Bebe
and Burberry, and restaurants
including Stephen Starr’s Buddakan and El Vez, as well as
Phillips Seafood of Baltimore.
The first phase of the Borgata’s expansion will add 600 slots,
36 game tables and a poker room
that brings the total of tables
from 34 to 80, and that’s just the
gaming side of it. Also in the
works are three fine dining establishments – the chefs are Bobby
Flay, Michael Mina and Wolfgang Puck – and two new ultra
nightclubs. The second phase,
ending in 2007, will feature a 45story tower with 600 hotel rooms
and 200 private condos.

The Quarter at Tropicana is
a three-story streetscape that
brings to life the splendor of Old
Havana beneath what appears to
be a bright, open sky, but is in
fact a domed ceiling so realistically painted that many do a
double take. Inside The Quarter
is an eclectic mix of internationally themed dining, shopping
and entertainment establishments, 70 in all, tucked into
picturesque colonial buildings
with vibrantly colored facades,
balustrades and wrought iron
balconies. The Quarter thrives as
a favorite gathering place for
locals and visitors alike.
Designers of the Rendezvous
Tower at Resorts made a point of
embracing the elegance, class
and sophistication of Atlantic
City’s heritage by capturing the
intensity of the art deco era both
inside and out, where brilliant
lighting from golden art deco

more than 26,000 square feet of

The Atlantic City Outlets The Walk offer upscale shopping,

Worn out from all the shopping
and in need of a little restoration?
You’ll have plenty to choose from
with The Quarter’s internationally
inspired dining venues.
A little farther down the Boardwalk, between Indiana Avenue and
Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.,
there’s Siganos Plaza, a shopping
space with a Mediterranean themed
façade.
And finally, closer to the center
of town, you’ll find Atlantic City
Outlets - The Walk. This pedestrian-friendly shopping district spans
about eight blocks and weighs in
with an impressive 50-plus stores,
among them Liz Claiborne, Coach,
Geoffrey Beene, Reebok, BareFeet
Shoes, Mikasa and Yankee Candle.
Dining options abound here, too.
And the shopping will only get
better in 2006, when The Pier at
Caesars, a $175 million dining,
retail and entertainment complex,
opens at the center of Atlantic City’s
historic Boardwalk. Among the
heavy weights expected to set up

protective sand dunes. There’s
no fee for beach access, and
from Memorial Day to Labor
Day swimmers, surfers and
boogie-boarders are under the
watchful eye of professional
lifeguards stationed every few

Beach volleyball, kayaking,
f ishing, boating and other
activities are all available, but
some of the most popular
attractions are the beach bars.
Scattered from one end of the
casino strip to the other, they
provide a mixture of live and
recorded music, light fare,
frozen concoctions and other
drinks, and a view of the ocean
– the perfect place to kick back
and soak in the Atlantic City
ambiance.
A Stormy Beginning For
An Atlantic City Legend
How Saltwater Taffy Got Its Name
here’s no escaping it. Atlantic
City will forever
be known as the
birthplace of saltwater
taffy, ever since an 1883

soaked the stock.
The morning after
the storm, a little girl
with a sweet tooth visited David Bradley’s
store asking for taffy,
prompting Bradley to
reply sadly, “You mean
saltwater taffy, don’t
you?” Like taffy to
