WELCOME
ABOUT TESORO LOS ANGELES REFINERY
1
Tesoro’s Los Angeles Refinery is located in Los Angeles County, near the Los Angeles Harbor, on
approximately 930 acres.
2
The Los Angeles Refinery is the largest refinery on the West Coast and a major producer of clean
fuels. At full capacity, it operates at 363,000 barrels per day (bpd).
3
The Refinery processes heavy crude from California’s San Joaquin Valley and Los Angeles Basin
as well as crudes from the Alaska North Slope, South America, West Africa and other international
sources. It manufactures gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, petroleum coke, fuel oil, fuel gases, propylene
and calcined coke.
4
The Los Angeles Refinery receives crude at its marine terminals in L.A. Harbor and ships products
throughout Southern California, Arizona and Nevada via its connections to several product distribution
pipelines and terminals. It distributes all grades of gasoline and ultra-low-sulfur diesel, primarily
to Tesoro’s retail system under the Exxon®, Mobil®, Shell®, ARCO®, Tesoro® and USA Gasoline™
brands. Its Watson Cogeneration plant produces 400 megawatts of electricity a day, and is the
largest cogeneration facility in California.

SHAHRUKH
AHMAD
Advanced Technologies Academy
Las Vegas, Nevada
Shahrukh thoroughly enjoys public speaking and
competition. He worked with his AP US History teacher
to create his school’s first Model United Nations Team.
Shahrukh quickly realized that the intent to win greatly
overshadowed his team’s ability to comprehend the
complexities of various governments throughout the world
and the essentialness of democracy. Shahrukh began
staying after school to conduct mock debates, hold Skype
sessions with other schools, and further develop his team
members into confident, polished speakers. Shahrukh and
his team were named the Best Small School Delegation
in their next MUN competition. Shahrukh is a member of
DECA, FBLA, and his school’s Ambassador Program.
SAVANNAH
COFER
Columbus Academy
Gahanna, Ohio
As a 5th grader, Savannah was greatly disappointed
to learn that her brother was building campfires and
shooting rifles in Boy Scouts, while she had participated
in sing-alongs and arts and crafts in Girl Scouts. The next
summer, Savannah decided to offer a robotics workshop
to local Girl Scout members. She watched the participants
gain confidence and become robotics enthusiasts. Each
year, Savannah’s robotics workshop has reached more
and more Girl Scouts in Central Ohio. She even offers a
specialized robotics workshop to the Ohio School for the
Blind. Savannah’s workshops now reaches underprivileged
communities in Newark, OH. She explains that she is
“building the enthusiasm for engineering across gender,
racial, and socioeconomic boundaries.”

KATHERINE
DIONNE
North Hall High School
Gainesville, Georgia
Katherine correlates leadership to setting the “PACE” (P=
Passion, A= Accountability, C= Connection/Collaboration,
E= Education). After witnessing a classmate packing a
school lunch to ensure a meal over the weekend, Katherine
decided to research child hunger in her community. She
learned that 60% of students received free or reduced
lunch. Katherine considered the “nutritional gap” affecting
students during the summer months and proposed “Sow
More, Grow More,” an initiative to increase food donations
to local farmers. In its initial year, “Sow More, Grow More”
operated for the full growing season, 23 weeks, and
generated over 600 pounds of fresh produce. Katherine
received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award and
President Obama’s Volunteer Service Award. Katherine
is an IB student dually-enrolled at the University of North
Georgia. She is also the founder of her high school’s
Chinese Club. Katherine is working with a Confucius
Institute educator to create Chinese conversation videos
for county-wide use.
CHRISTIAN
KNUTSON
Thomas Jefferson High School
Auburn, Washington
19
Christian has been involved in student government for
all four years of high school. During his campaign for
vice president of the Associated Student Body, he made
TJ P.R.I.D.E (Thomas Jefferson Purpose, Recognition,
Involvement, Dedication, Excellence) his campaign slogan.
After he was elected, his campaign slogan was adopted as
the motto for the 2015-2016 school year. Christian has been
chosen to mentor incoming freshmen for the past three
years. He has also worked with special needs students.
In Boy Scouts and church service activities, Christian has
created community gardens, fed the hungry, and renovated
Scout camps. A believer in “servant leadership,” Christian
is proud to give back to the communities that have assisted
in his development.
ELIZABETH
STILES
Our Lady of Mercy Academy
Woodbury, New York
Four years ago, Elizabeth began assisting her neighbor with
childcare. One of her neighbor’s three children had been a victim
of pediatric cancer, and Elizabeth’s help enabled her neighbor
to focus more on work, fundraisers, and blood drives. This led
Elizabeth to found Helping Hand Babysitting, a not-for-profit
organization comprised of teenage babysitters. She held a schoolwide assembly to publicize her efforts and recruit volunteers.
Elizabeth organized a CPR certification course allowing 100 of
Helping Hand sitters to become certified. In the organization’s first
year, they logged over 200 hours of service. Elizabeth has been
featured in Newsday’s “Way to Go” column and Verizon Fios 1
has covered the program in a television segment. Elizabeth is also
captain of the basketball team. She attends Our Lady of Mercy
Academy on a full scholarship for her outstanding reputation as a
student-athlete. She aspires to pursue oncology in college while
working to further expand Helping Hands nationally.
