Purpose
The EAFIT University student chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists has the
mission to promote and contribute to the development of interest of economic
geology in Antioquia and Colombia. Our chapter focuses on carry out research
projects to train excellent students in the atmosphere of mining and mineral
exploration. We also organize lectures, seminars and field trips, which are attended
by student members, EAFIT faculty, and professional geologists, making an
interaction between academia and industry.

Summary of Annual Activities
1.
Meetings
Every semester, we organized lecture series and seminars. These are casual
meetings in EAFIT, where we use to meet with faculty and professional geologists
to discuss about applied methods and research topics on economic geology.
2.
Field Trips
During the year, our student chapter use to organize several field trips to different
types of mines, as described bellow:
2.1 La Calera Mine (October 10)
The field trip to La Calena Mine, was done in October of 2014. Several
undergraduate students (28) from EAFIT University, including the SEG members
went to visit this mine, located close to Mulaló town in the Valle del Cauca
department.
The actual exploitation is done on Tertiary rocks of the Vijes Formation, composed
by a limestone - calcareous quartz sandstone sequence. Using an open-pit mining
method. In order to get different quality of limestone for several types of cement, the
mine takes material from 10.0 m (vertical), with banks ranging from 10.0m to 15.0m
wide berms, and exploitation advances parallel to the strike of the rocks.

2.2 The Gramalote Project (November 8)
On November 2014, 18 undergraduate students from EAFIT University and the SEG
members, visited the Gramalote Project from AngloGold Ashanti. This project is
located 110 km northeastern of Medellin city (Antioquia Department). Historically the
region has been characterized as a gold producer district, with crafts culture of more
than 150 years old. The Gramalote deposit is geologically located in the Late
Cretaceous Antioquia Batholith of Late. This body is characterized by granitic rocks
that covers an area of 7,221 km2. This lithology in the project area is mainly
composed by Tonalites and granodiorites rocks and diorite dikes. The Gramalote
mine is a gold deposit related to intrusions where we have identified three alteration
and mineralization events: a) Quartz-calcite-pyrite. b) Quartz-pyrite-chalcopyritegold. (Being the most important event in gold mineralization. It is found together
pyrite and chalcopyrite, often filling fractures). c) Quartz-calcite-white mica-pyrite ±
chalcopyrite ± Oro.

Hydrothermal alterations in the project area are always presented as halos in veins,
veinlets and fractures. In sectors where it has a high density of veinlets, the changes
tend to have a more pervasive aspect. This potassium alteration at the Gramalote
area, is characterized by the replacement of plagioclase feldspar.

2.3 Marmato Mine (March 19)
The field trip to the Marmato mine, was done in March of 2015. Near 25 students
from EAFIT University including the SEG members, visited the Marmato Mine that
belongs to the Gran Colombia Gold. This district is located 80 km south of Medellin,
in the Middle Cauca Belt. The mineralization is interpreted as an epithermal low
sulphidation Au-Ag ore, with reserves of up to 15,9 million Oz Au gold (Tassinari,
2007). Ducring the visit, we received an introductory presentation and then a field
tripo to the underground explotation, to explore several levels in the mine, where we
observed the regional rocks associated with the mineralization, and also the
distensional veins, stockwork and brecciated zones of the system. We also received
a tour outside of the mine, to observe the crushing processes of the rock and the
extractive processes of the ore.
The visits to the mines of Marmato have been made for two consecutive years
together with the Mineral Deposits subject of EAFIT University, which is attended
particularly by the new members of the chapter or people who are part of the course.

2.4 Calcium Carbonate Mine (JUNE 5)
On June of the present year, 8 students visited the Omya S.A. Mine, located in the
Antioquia Deparment, 150 km from the Medellin city. The exploitation is done in the
Paleozoic marbles of the Central Andean Cordillera, also composed by a sequence
of quartzites and siliceous neiss associated with regional and contact
metamorphism. During the visit to this mine, we saw all the mineral extraction
processes.

4. Future Plans
Among the plans we have for the upcoming year are:
1) Encourage undergraduate students to join to our SEG student chapter.
2) Attend to a field trip to La Colosa Project from AngloGold Ashanti in
November 22.
3) The 4th special day of Economic Geology (2016)
4) One short-course for first semester of 2016 to be confirmed.
5) Organize and attend to a field trip to El Roble Mine from Atico Mining
Corporation.
6) Organize and attend to a field trip to El Cairo Mine from Argos.
7) Organize and present lectures related to economic geology with the UnalMed Chapter.
8) Participate in local and international conferences and conventions.
