™ Welcome
Pages and City Descriptions
Several thousand years ago the Chumash Indians settled here. In the 1500s the Spanish explored
the region, but they didn’t settle until 1782. Forty years later this land became part of Mexico
when it won independence from Spain. The 1848 discovery of gold in California brought
thousands of settlers, and by 1850 the American flag flew over Santa Barbara. In the 1870s
Santa Barbara became a haven for health-seekers and tourists.
Our downtown area is famous for its shopping and restaurants. The mountains provide
hiking. Our active arts community provides music and theatre. We also have a busy
waterfront. Around the turn of the 20th century, a wealthy local built the harbor and its break
water giving us a busy and productive fishing and sporting fleet. It is common to see beautiful
sail boats and yachts slipping in and out of the harbor's mouth.

SANTA BARBARA
___________________________________________________________
The Santa Barbara area was discovered & claimed for Spain in 1542 by Juan Cabrillo, a Portuguese
explorer sailing for Spain. In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino anchored offshore on December 4—the feast day
of Saint Barbara. Vizcaino left his mark by naming the dusty, shrub covered plain between the Pacific &
the mountains after the patron saint of sailors, Santa Barbara. In April 1782 Padre Juniper Serra
established the Presidio Real of Santa Barbara in a grand ceremony, & four years later construction of
Mission Santa Barbara began. As the 19th century ebbed, Santa Barbara began to show signs of radical
transformation. The ending of the Mexican-American war in 1847, left Southern California under the
rule of the United States & following California’s induction as a state in 1850, the dusty expanses of
Spanish & Mexican ranchos gave way to Yankees moving west. In the late 1850’s as the San Francisco
Gold Rush ushered a tidal wave of westward migration, Santa Barbara began to see a new kind of
settler—the wealthy. The mixture of newcomers & Spanish descendants has shaped the area for what it
has become today.

CARPINTERIA / SUMMERLAND
___________________________________________________________
Legend has it that the city got its name from the Spaniards who saw the Chumash Indians busy building
the large ocean-going canoes called tomols and called it the 'carpenter shop' - La Carpinteria.
Carpinteria is a peaceful, seaside city in a small town. Carp, as the locals call it, is situated along the
only Southern facing stretch of coastline in California. The climate never gets too cold or too hot. The
city sits on a thin strip of fertile land nestled between the mountains & the ocean & is unique in its
diversity. Carpinteria State Beach Park offers overnight camping & the best surf-fishing & tide-pooling
for miles. Even as many of the surrounding communities become more residential or more business or
more tourist oriented, Carpinteria has retained all of the things that make a community a community.
When Summerland was founded as a Spiritualist colony in 1889, terraced streets lined with small lots
that sold for $25 apiece. The newcomers built a temple where they hold séances & contacted spirits,
assisted by mediums who could communicate with departed friends and relatives.
Summerland is a relaxed, tiny, hillside community reminiscent of a New England village nestled on a
hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You won't want to miss the many antique stores that line Lillie Ave,
the main street of Summerland.

MONTECITO
___________________________________________________________
Despite its name, “Little Mountain,” you’d be challenged to find anything minuscule about Montecito, a
community that flanks Santa Barbara to the south. During the 18th century the area amounted to a small
Chumash village & a hundred years later it was mostly orchards & farms. But by the 1900s it began to
become what it is today, a neighborhood for the wealthy, with lush landscapes hiding gated mansions &
designer homes. This the place for high-end boutique shopping, tony restaurants, & top of the line
hotels.
July 16th used to be celebrated as “Montecito Day” by the old-time Spanish residents, & was always
marked by a gala fandango & fiesta at the Lorenzana adobe on Parra Grande Lane.

GOLETA
___________________________________________________________
Goleta Valley is Santa Barbara’s practical counterpart. It was established in 1875 with the arrival of its
first post office but didn’t find a spot on the map until the 1950s, when the University of California,
aerospace companies turned it into a Santa Barbara suburb. Today this is where high-tech companies
flourish, university students call home, & parents raise their kids. This town has a beautiful stretch of
coast & beachside parks. The main attraction in this coastal area is the University of California, a Nobel
laureate—rich campus that spreads across 989 acres along the California coastline. The University sits
on the foundation of Santa Barbara’s old coastal fort & boasts one of the most spectacular strips of
beach in Santa Barbara. Be sure to tour some of the museums & galleries scattered throughout the
campus.
Stop at the visitor center to pick up a campus map & brochures for one of the state’s most beautiful
universities, or join a guided tour. www. ucsb.edu. (805) 893-2487

SOLVANG / SANTA YNEZ
___________________________________________________________
Solvang means “sunny fields” in Danish. In 1911. Solvang was founded by Danish-Americans who
traveled from Iowa to establish a settlement on 9,000 acres of the former Rancho San Carlos de Jonata,
adjacent to the historic Mission Santa Ines. In 1936 the Danish Days annual festival emerged & it continues to celebrate Solvang’s heritage during the third weekend of every September. Festivals &
celebrations are traditional parts of Solvang’s charm from the Taste of Solvang every March to the
Mission’s Fiesta each August & Winterfest during the month of December.
The anglicized name “Santa Ynez” was derived from the 1804 Mission Santa Ines, the first Spanish
settlement in the area. Santa Ynez Valley includes the city of Solvang as well as the city of Buellton &
the communities of Ballard, Los Alamos, Los Olivos & Santa Ynez—all known for their genuine
hospitality & friendly welcome to visitors from around the globe. Rural Ballard is home to a little red
schoolhouse functioning since 1883, an award-winning inn & a wine tasting room. The bustling gateway
city of Buellton is “everything for the traveler”-from a full service hotel to inns, motels, a variety of
shops, dining & food establishments. Nearby Los Alamos has an old time western feel to the seven
block long main street offering an antique mall in a historic train depot, quaint shops, several restaurants,
& wine tasting rooms. Los Olivos offers a slice of Americana with the Wildling Art Museum, numerous
art galleries, boutiques & wine tasting rooms. The turn of the 20th century village of Santa Ynez serves
modern cowboys at a historic saloon, numerous restaurants, a luxury inn & a bed & breakfast.

LOCAL SHOPPING
___________________________________________________________
Paseo Nuevo- Paseo Nuevo is one of Southern California's favorite get-away places. Here you'll discover
a picturesque world of Spanish-style courtyards, winding paseos, gently flowing fountains and lush tropical
flowers. Paseo Nuevo includes Nordstrom, Macy's, and more than 50 specialty shops.
El Paseo - Historic El Paseo, California's first shopping center, was built in the 1920s and features a variety
of unique gift shops, jewelry stores, galleries and restaurants nestled amid romantic gardens and Spanish
courtyards.
La Arcada - On the north end of the downtown State Street shopping district is La Arcada Court, a Spanish
paseo and courtyard with exotic plants, trees, tiled fountains and an amazing collection of life-like bronze
statues. La Arcada has a variety of interesting shops, galleries, restaurants and Cafes.
La Cumbre Plaza - One of Santa Barbara's largest shopping malls is La Cumbre Plaza, located on the 3800
block of upper State Street. Serving shoppers since 1967, it includes two department stores, Robinsons-May
and Sears, and more than 60 shops, restaurants, services and lots of parking.
Camino Real Marketplace - Camino Real Marketplace introduced "big box" shopping to Santa Barbara
county. This includes giants such as Costco and Home Depot. In addition to several stores, the complex
features ten restaurants and a first-run movie multiplex with stadium seating.

LOCAL BEACHES
___________________________________________________________
Hendry’s Beach—Arroyo Burro Beach - This beach is just a ten minute drive along the Coast from downtown
Santa Barbara.
Directions: Take 101 to Los Positas. Turn away from the mountains. When you come to a T-intersection and turn
right. Take the second left at the base of a cliff.
Butterfly Beach - This beach is deceptive in its simplicity. Since it is a Montecito Beach, and Montecito and the
Biltmore have more than their share of celebrities, you have a good chance of seeing somebody famous here.
Directions: Take the 101 south to Olive Mill in Montecito. Take a right at the top of the exit and follow it around
until you reach the beach on your left. Parking is limited.
Carpinteria State & City Beaches - Although legally two beaches, this is one long stretch of gorgeous sand, surf
and dunes. Without a doubt, this is one of the nicest beaches anywhere.
Directions: From the 101 take the Linden exit away from the mountains. Go to the end of the road and you will
find the beach. There is plenty of free and paid parking.
East Beach - It's hard to say enough about this beach. Beautiful, long, sandy, deep even at high tide and bordered
by a grassy, tree-lined park.
Directions: East Beach is accessible from just about any exit along downtown Santa Barbara - Carrillo Blvd,
Milpas, Garden, Castillo. Turn away from the mountains and when you reach Carrillo, you can't miss the huge
stretch of park between Stearns Wharf and the bird refuge.
El Capitan Beach (and State Park) - This is a beautiful beach for those who love beaches. It's not the biggest in
town, but it has plenty of sand, and the level of privacy is delicious.
Directions: Take the 101N past Goleta and drive until you reach the El Capitan signs. The road will take you right
into the park. The park is approximately 10 miles out of town.
Gaviota Beach (and Sate Park) - Most people - even long time Santa Barbarans - don't even know this beach is
here. It is a ways out of the city - 33 miles west of Santa Barbara.
Directions: Take the 101N from Santa Barbara until you come to signs for Gaviota State Park. Be very careful,
however, if you are going northbound as you will be crossing oncoming highway traffic!
Goleta Beach - This beach has a little bit of everything for just about anybody. There are plenty of grills & picnic
tables & a brisk wind keeps bathers from getting over heated. There is a busy walking trail nearby.
Directions: From the 101 take the 217 until you come almost the end. Take the airport exit and at the bottom of
the ramp turn left. Go under the bridge and turn right into the parking lot.
Leadbetter Beach - This is one of the busiest beaches in town. A long strip of sand flanked by green grass at the
base of the city college.
Directions: From the 101 take Garden or Castillo to Carrillo Blvd. Turn right. After you have passed the harbor,
Leadbetter will be on your left. Some free, mostly paid parking.
Refugio Beach (and State Park) - This beach is unique among Santa Barbara beaches. Many locals find that they
come here than to other beaches closer into town. It just feels different than the others.
Directions: Take the 101 north of the city. Go beyond El Capitan and follow the signs.
West Beach - If you're looking for the best place to watch fireworks on the 4th of July or New Years, or you want
to watch boats coming & going from the harbor, or you want to play volleyball or rollerblade, then come here.
Directions: Take the Garden Street exit and turn towards the ocean. At the end of the road turn right. There is
on-street parking and if you're willing to walk a bit there's parking on the wharf and parking for East Beach.

EXPERIENCE RIVIERA
___________________________________________________________
Bridging the 2 mile span that separates Mission and Sycamore Canyons, the sylvan uplift which
padres knew as the “mission ridge” has for the past 65 years been known as “the Riviera” due
to its resemblance to slopes along the Mediterranean coast of France and Italy. Santa Barbarians
are lucky enough to live on this ridge attach premium value to their homes because of their
unsurpassed views of the city, mountains, ocean, and islands.
The Riviera is famous for its semitropical appearance. The flowing curves at the west end of
Alameda Padre Serra today mark the old streetcar right of way, the curves being essential to
provide a gradient which electric cars could negotiate.
One of the older and more stabilized neighborhoods in the city, the Rivera also ranks as one of
the wealthiest and best-educated. “We know how lucky we are not to have to go to Europe to
enjoy the Riviera life-style,” one cosmopolitan commented. “We’ve got a better Riviera right
here in Santa Barbara.”
Price range from $1,200,000 - $10,000,000

EXPERIENCE UPPER EAST
___________________________________________________________
City planners regard Eastside as perhaps the most important factor in Santa Barbara’s growth.
More undeveloped space and a higher percentage of older single-family homes exist in the
Eastside than in other city neighborhoods. The Upper Eastside has been identified as a bailiwick
of the wealthy elite since 1895.
Price range from $1,000,000 - $9,000,000

EXPERIENCE SAN ROQUE
___________________________________________________________
Few residential neighborhoods of Santa Barbara can boast the rich historical background of the
San Roque and Rutherford Park areas. The neighborhood got its name when pioneers arrived in
1769 with Governor Potola. They camped at the mouth of the San Roque Creek, which they
named to memorialize the patron saint of invalids, Saint Roque, a Carmelite friar of the 14th
century.
San Roque has a micro climate that provides mild weather year round. Now built-up, it is
admired for its sweeping curved streets, its luxuriant landscaping, and its harmonious blend of
many architectural themes - Spanish Colonial, English Tudor, French Normandy, California
Redwood, Italianate and American Colonial, mostly built since 1925.
With shopping and banking facilities at their very doorstep, residents of San Roque feel they are
living in one of Santa Barbara’s choicest residential neighborhoods, where investing in home or
business property guarantees future security.
Price range from $1,000,000 - $3,000,000
55
EXPERIENCE SAMARKAND
___________________________________________________________
Samarkand meant “the land of heart’s desire” in the archaic Persian tongue. As the dominating
landmark of a hilly, elevated neighborhood, the Samarkand gave its name to an area bounded
on the east by Oak Park.
Most of Sarmarkand utilities are underground, offering best advantage of mountain and city
views. The Samarkand neighborhood could point with pride to one of America’s most beautiful
& prestigious retirement centers, originally a hotel. The Samarkand District Improvement
Association, one of the most active in the city, reported that Samarkand has one of the lowest
population densities in Southern California.
Price range from $1,000,000 - $3,000,000

EXPERIENCE WESTSIDE
___________________________________________________________
The “Westside Story” of Santa Barbara is told in our city’s first suburb. Cottage Hospital and its
surrounding laboratories, rest homes, professional buildings, clinics & other medically-oriented
satellites, make it very convenient for the local residents.
City Hall recognized the Westside as the oldest established residential area in town: six out of
ten houses were built prior to 1940. Santa Barbara’s Westside is one of the last frontiers for the
great American traditional, one that is daily becoming scarce, the single family home.
Price range from $850,000 - $2,500,000
57
EXPERIENCE THE MESA
___________________________________________________________
Mesa, a Spanish word meaning “table”, has been applied to the flat beach-fronting neighborhood along Santa Barbara’s southwestern borders near the ocean. The Mesa is one of the oldest
historical areas in the city, paradoxically it is one of our youngest residential districts.
Artists and writers have a special affinity for the Mesa as a carefree place to live. City weather
records show that the Mesa’s winter temperatures are 10 to 12 degrees warmer than downtown,
and 10 to 12 degrees cooler in the summer.
This climatic attraction, plus the spectacular marine views, caused a housing boom after World
War II. The Mesa Improvement Association, dedicated to protecting the Mesa life-style as one
of the most envied in the South Coast area.
Price range from $1,000,000 - $5,000,000

EXPERIENCE MISSION CANYON
___________________________________________________________
Ethel Barrymore, the late empress of stage & screen, once told a friend, “Fortunate indeed is the
person who can live in Santa Barbara, and doubly blessed if his home is located in Mission
Canyon.”
Newcomers during the 1850’s were quick to appreciate the sylvan beauty of Mission Canyon,
and they began to move in and build home. Above them were a series of rocky cascades known
as The Seven Falls. Homes in Mission Canyon range from the humble adobe, to magnificent
mansions like Glendessary, on the shady lane of the same name. This sprawling half timbered
Tudor manor house was one of the fine homes built before the turn of the century by Christoph
Tornoe, a gifted Danish artisan.
Price range from $850,000 - $5,000,000

EXPERIENCE CARPINTERIA
___________________________________________________________
The Carpinteria Valley is located the southeast corner of Santa Barbara county. It’s a little piece
of coastal paradise tucked midway between Ventura and Santa Barbara, seeming to shy away
from the glare of tourism’s spotlight, but at the same time welcoming all who chance to discover its charms.
Carpinteria’s splendid natural setting and small town charm remain relatively undiscovered.
Enjoy the small town pleasures, where tree-shaded streets, parades and craft shows evoke a
gentle way of life. Dozens of antique stores, small shops and restaurants are clustered along the
main streets of Carpinteria and nearby Summerland, making the area a browser’s paradise.
Carpinteria is home to a world-renowned surfing area off Rincon Point, and a beautiful
swimming beach. Nature smiles kindly on the Carpinteria Valley, making it home to many
nurseries.
Price range from $850,000 - $9,000,000

EXPERIENCE MONTECITO
___________________________________________________________
Full of mystique and grandeur, history and beauty, Montecito, approximately eight square miles
of hidden neighborhoods and expansive estates, has been the destination of choice for celebrities and the affluent for over one hundred years.
Located a couple of miles east of Santa Barbara, “Montecito”, which is Spanish for “little
mountain”, first received attention from wealthy Easterners and Midwesterners, in the late
1800’s. These early settlers developed large & lavish estates.
Today, Montecito offers many and varied options for residential living, such as an easy-care
condominium just steps from the beach, a hidden cottage down a tree-shaded lane, as well as
large estates on many acres, both old and new.
The pace of life here is unhurried, and it is easy to see why Montecito has become a desirable
second home location for big city dwellers. Whether you’re a famous movie star or a curious
traveler, you’ll find Montecito to be truly a lush paradise.
Price range from $1,500,000 - $50,000,000

EXPERIENCE HOPE RANCH
___________________________________________________________
From 1888 until the 1920’s, the Pacific Improvement Company shaped the destiny of Hope
Ranch, molding it into its present image as a wealthy suburb of Santa Barbara. Many of the
amenities offered to members of the Hope Ranch Park Homeowners Association since the
1930’s include cabanas for a private beach club fronting the ranch, a polo field, archery range,
skeet-shooting facility, tennis courts, and 30 miles of bridle path.
Space prohibits a full account of Hope Ranch’s outdoor-living background. As a result of its
independent spirit, Hope Ranch continues to maintain the lofty standards of suburban living
which have been in effect since the late Harold S. Chase advertised his “sun-kissed, oceanwashed, mountain-girded, island-guarded Hope Ranch” more than half a century ago.
Price range from $2,500,000 - $25,000,000+

many recreational opportunities, historic sites and seasonal festivals. Combining all that the
area offers with a mild year-round climate and idyllic natural surroundings, it is easy to see why
Goleta is the “Good Land”.

EXPERIENCE SOLVANG / SANTA YNEZ VALLEY
___________________________________________________________
Solvang was founded by Danish-Americans in 1911 who traveled from Iowa to establish a
settlement on 9,000 acres. Solvang means “sunny fields” in Danish. The Danish Days annual
festival continues to celebrate Solvang’s heritage during the third weekend of every September.
The Santa Ynez Valley is situated on the Central Coast of California, and just 30 minutes from
Santa Barbara, over the Santa Ynez Mountains, with its breathtaking vineyards, pastures and
ranches where real cowboys still ride the range. The Santa Ynez Valley is made up of five small
towns, Santa Ynez, Ballard, Los Olivos, Solvang, and Buellton. Each town has it’s own
elementary and junior high school & Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, located on the
border of Solvang Santa Ynez, accommodates the entire community.
The Santa Ynez Valley is unique, due to fact that one may purchase a home on a small lot or a
ranch and estates on 100 acres or more. There are many separate areas of five acre, ten acre or
twenty acre communities. These cater to the horse lovers or those who simply want larger
parcels and more privacy.
