Happy New Year!
ell, here we are embarking on another NEW YEAR! Hooray for that!
It has been a hard year for many of us. Leading the list of challenges, are LOSSES; for instance, losing our health, a
friendship, a marriage, a loved one, our financial footing, a job, or even our home. Many of us are thankful to have
survived 2009 and look forward to the opportunities, surprises and experiences that lie ahead for 2010 – hoping,
praying and taking action to make it a good one!
With all of that in mind, my mantra this year has been – it is not the strongest who survive but the ones who are most
adaptable to change. I took some time to reflect on the year gone by and wanted to share my thoughts with you about
ADAPTABILITY, which I have included on pages 38 and 39! I hope that, in some small way, they can inspire you to
take the steps necessary to improve your situation, help your psyche heal from the events of the past and allow you the
vision to accept today and let go of yesterday!
Dr. Michael J. Fox has some relevant information for you to read, process and decide upon when it comes to the
preventative health measures you can take to live a long and healthy life. Mammography versus Thermography is
interesting because it has been in the media lately, causing many of us to question what we have been programmed
to do over many years. It is hard to make the shift in thinking and doing something that is outside our ordinary
understanding. Read what Dr. Fox has to say on this very current subject on pages 36 and 37.

If DIVORCE has been on your mind or in your reality DiGiacomo and Somers are a dynamic duo that you must meet!
Most people do not equate divorce with SENSITIVITY or COST EFFECTIVENESS. But Kathryn Somers and Carol
DiGiacomo have lived the nightmare of divorce themselves and provide an extraordinary approach to working through
what could be your most tumultuous time in life. Take the time to read what they have to say and learn your options,
your rights and how to emotionally manage getting out of your marriage, on pages 26 and 27.
This issue is filled with information, education and resources to help you make the best of 2010. From taking PILATES
instruction from Transformations in Long Grove, to improving your smile with long overdue dental appointments, to
getting out on the town to enjoy plays and fine dining or perhaps treating that stubborn cellulite, there is a little bit of
something for everyone!
I wish you a great start to the New Year!
Until next time, stay warm, safe, nurtured and healthy!

In the Triple Play of Life: Is two or three ever enough?
By Dr. Kristina Chung, D.C.
What is the triple play
of life?
No, the triple play of life
is not your cable, phone and
internet. In my opinion, it
is your partner, career, and
children.
For most women, there are 3
defining moments in our lives: your first boyfriend,
your first job, and having your first baby. You may
not keep your first boyfriend, and definitely not
want to keep your first job, but having your first
baby is monumental.
Being a 37-year-old woman, “of a certain age”,
I have to wonder, did I wait too long? I have the
husband and the career. Now I look forward
to having children. But, are two out of three
enough?
According to research, by the time a woman
turns 35, her fertility sharply declines because
the reduction in the number and quality of
mature eggs. In addition, there are increased risks
and complications of having babies born with
congenital birth defects.
Even though I am considered medically healthy,
I realize I may still have difficulties getting pregnant.
And I am not alone. Many women are waiting until
their 30s and 40s to have children. In fact, about 20
percent of women in the United States have their
first child after age 35. About one-third of couples
in which the woman is over 35 have fertility
problems. This is a common theme within my own
practice. More than ever, my patients are seeking
treatments for fertility support. I have been able
to make a difference in their lives using alternative
therapies. Ultimately, this gives me faith that I can
have the” triple play of life” as well.
What is Infertility and what causes it?
Infertility is defined as being unable to get
pregnant after one year of trying. Or, six months, if
a women is 35 or older.

Cellulite is a Problem That Can Be Resolved!
Body Contouring is Now Available with Guaranteed Results
By Janis Ariazi, Founder of Ageless Skincare
What is cellulite?
Excess fat and fluid retention in the body create
bulky masses of fat that collect in clusters beneath
the skin surface. These clusters are known as
cellulite. They appear on various parts of the body
such as buttocks, thighs, stomach and the inner
parts of legs and upper arms causing the unsightly,
ripple effect that women often suffer with.
Why do I have it?
Cellulite is typically a female issue. Women
tend to have more fatty tissue than men resulting
from hormonal imbalances. Cellulite can occur
from heredity, lack of exercise and healthy
dieting practices, and as a byproduct of medical
problems that include inflammation and digestive
disturbances.
What can I do to get rid of it?
Janis Ariazi Ageless Skincare has the answer!
Biogenie Body Countouring technology works
non-invasively by targeting detoxifying microcurrents directly to cellular fluids and fat cells
and drawing them to the lymphatic system where
the body naturally rids itself of them. The result
is tighter, firmer and smoother skin with a more
sculpted, lifted and defined appearance. It is an
excellent long-term solution for the reduction
of cellulite, not just a temporary reduction in the
appearance of cellulite.
A body contouring system that encourages
lymphatic drainage and employs the use
of microcurrent, is the latest in the health and
beauty industry to address cellulite. With this
state of the art technology, the goal is to reduce
chronic inflammation, which is often the source of
pain, disease and excess fat deposits. Stimulating
internal healing of the body results in visible signs
of health internally and externally. A true antiaging program helps us to feel good on the inside
and reflects that on the outside, resulting in a more
youthful, healthy appearance overall.

Compassionate Marriage/Compassionate Divorce
TM
Bring Passion to your marriage or Compassion to your divorce.
By Linda Kroll, JD, LCPC, MS
During these difficult times –
“What should I do?”
In just one session, I can
help you answer many
of your questions:
Marriage Counseling
or Divorce?
“Should I stay or should I go?”
As I therapist, mediator and attorney, I have
counseled hundreds of individuals and couples on
ways to have a more passionate and fun marriage,
or how to create a compassionate divorce.
The recent financial challenges that are threatening to derail many dreams have also affected secret or mutual plans for a divorce. Couples who are
having trouble supporting one household may not
be able to discuss the possibility of two separate
ones.
“What is there for me to learn now?”
You don’t have to suffer in quiet or vocal desperation. You can begin to communicate honestly,
heal wounds from the past, and forgive yourself
and your spouse for any pain inflicted or inferred.
In just one session you can learn a new
way to communicate.
You might be tolerating your situation by staying busy, working more, talking less or becoming
depressed. You can actually heal your pain and create a dynamic partnership by finally confronting
the issues that have divided you.
It is the time for you to have honest discussions
about money. Who earns it? Where is it going?
How can you partner in ways that feel supportive?
Do you each feel empowered and heard?
With job losses and changes, it may be time
to discuss childcare, household responsibilities,
mutual expectations. Many people marry without
ever being able to talk about these issues, and then
become angry and resentful when their unspoken

needs and desires are ignored.
Any topic that would need to be determined
in a divorce can be discussed within the marriage,
sometimes with amazing results.
It takes one call
You can begin to ease the tension in your home
and create a healthy relationship. As you discuss
finances, you will attain more autonomy as well as
understanding and support.
You will learn how to communicate with honesty and empathy so that you can create a better marriage or provide for an amicable separation and/or
divorce.
You don’t have to suffer. You can start today

SE L F I M P ROV E M E N T
Why is It Called Plastic Surgery?
By Aras D. Tijunelis, M.D. of Lake County Plastic Surgery
T
he word “plastic”
comes from the
Greek word “plastikos,” meaning to “mold or
shape.” The first plastic surgeries were developed to close a
difficult wound or replace
tissue lost due to injury or
cancer. These procedures often involved reshaping
the area with the patient’s own tissues. As the science and art of medicine progressed, implants were
invented which revolutionized plastic surgery as we
know it today.
Does Insurance cover plastic surgery?
There is no quick and easy answer to this question, but the answer is a resoundingly indifferent
it depends on your insurance company. As a general
rule, most truly cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance, as most reconstructive procedures are. There is a surprisingly wide variation
between insurance companies and coverage, for
example some cover breast reductions; some do
not. Some cover extended tummy tucks (extended
panniculectomies); some do not. To find out if the
procedure you desire is covered by your insurance
company, call the phone number on the back of
your insurance card.
Which is better to have my surgery at:
the Hospital or an Ambulatory Surgery
Center?
Most patients prefer to have their procedures
performed at our ambulatory surgery facility that
is fully accredited by the AAAASF. We have all the
instruments and equipment we need because we
personally ordered them; my staff has been specially selected is and dedicated to the practice of
plastic surgery as well as to each individual patient,
which ultimately makes the surgery go smoothly.
However, there are some procedures, and some patients, that require more than what my surgical office can accommodate. In that case, I will take care
of them at the hospital.
Is Botox® Cosmetic really safe? How
about for long term use?
Yes, it is safe for the general population; however patients with certain specific neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or
Lambert-Eaton Syndrome should not receive
Botox ® cosmetic. There are years and years of

How much does a Breast Augmentation

has been on where to place the incision and how to
close it with the goal being to make the work done

individual’s skin has individual healing characteristics: some people heal their scars thick and wide,
while some heal to nearly invisible thin lines. There
are some new products on the market now that
my practice has been using as an adjunct in postsurgical care which do seem to improve the speed
of healing and the quality of the scar. There is no
straightforward answer to the question of “will
I have a scar?” it depends on the location of your

Early Dental Visits Lead To Healthy Smiles
By Laura Vivier, DDS
“When should I bring
my child in for their first
dental checkup?” The
short answer is: by their
first birthday.
The Importance of
a Dental Home
The earlier children
are introduced to the
dental office, the better accustomed they become
to the environment and the less likely they are
to develop a fear of the dentist. According to
the American Association of Pediatric Dentists
(AAPD), children should visit the dental office
approximately six months after they begin teething,
or no later than twelve months of age. Most parents
find this surprising, but a lifetime of excellent oral
health begins by establishing a dental home as early
as possible.
Tooth decay is a preventable disease, yet it
is the most common childhood disease in our
country. More than 40% of kids have cavities by the
time they reach kindergarten, a condition that can
result in significant pain and/or affect physical and
mental growth. Moreover, preventing cavities early
on is much easier and cost-effective than treating
them. Think of it as a “dental vaccine.”
What To Expect at the First Visit
“But Doc, don’t baby teeth just fall out?” Yes
and no. Baby teeth are replaced, but not before they
have a significant impact on adult teeth. Problems
in baby teeth often lead to problems in adult teeth,
which can then lead to a lifetime of costly and
potentially uncomfortable dental visits.
Parental education is perhaps the most
important reason why the AAPD recommends
such an early start. Your first visit is designed not
only to introduce your child to the dental office,
but also to introduce your child’s oral health needs
to you. We look in your child’s mouth to make sure
14

everything is normal, and we try to let you know
what to look out for. Some noise (read: crying) is
normal and expected.
Healthy Teeth Tips
• Healthy teeth should be all one color; spots
or stains are usually indicative of tooth decay.
Gums should be light pink and firm, not bright
red or swollen. Lips and tongues should move
about freely; a “tied tongue” can lead to suckling
difficulties or speech impediments. Communicate
any concerns to your dentist as soon as possible.
• Even before teeth come in, clean your child’s
gums after feeding to acclimate them to oral
hygiene. Use a clean cloth or baby toothbrush once
daily. Around age two, add a pea-size amount of
fluoride toothpaste.
• Plan on helping brush your child’s teeth until
age six or seven (a good rule of thumb is to brush
for them until they are old enough to tie their own
shoes).
• Eliminate bottles at bedtime, unless they
are filled with water. Milk and juice contain sugar,
which coats teeth in acid during the night. • Avoid sugar. Choose fruits and vegetables
over candy and cookies. • Schedule regular dental check-ups. • Make teeth fun! Just like anything else with
kids, positive reinforcement and repetition works.
A healthy smile is one of the best things you can
give to your child. Start a lifetime of excellent oral
care now. I cannot think of a better gift.

This can easily happen if the grout lines were never sealed
after the tile was installed, or if the seal on the grout wasn’t
properly maintained. In fact, most grout lines are never sealed
and before long dirt, mildew and stains penetrate the porous
grout, making it appear dull and dirty. Discolored grout can turn
your once-dazzling floors or walls into an eyesore. There is a
solution, however: Sir Grout, the experts in grout and tile care.
After
According to Sir Grout’s Dan Lundstedt owner of Sir Grout in
Chicago and Suburbs, respectively, deep cleaning and then
permanently sealing grout with their pigmented sealant will
keep floors and walls looking new again for years.
“Many homeowners are unaware that they can bring back the
beauty of their tile floors, walls and countertops without tearing
up their tile and starting over,” says Dan Lundstedt. “We
provide a distinct service with uncommon results -- making
old grout look new again. In fact, many of our customers tell
us their floors or walls look better than the day they were
installed.”
seal grout. Sir Grout’s proprietary Sealant is then applied,
penetrating the grout’s pores and creating a permanent barrier
that repels stains and dirt. With 30 different tints, Sir Grout’s
sealant can either restore or change the grout’s original color,
depending on a customer’s wishes.
“Just as important,” adds Dan Lundstedt, “we help keep new
grout looking new for years to come. Homeowners don’t realize
that newly installed floors or walls can begin to discolor within
the first year if not properly sealed, which most installers do
not do. Once the grout has cured, Sir Grout comes in and
permanently seals the new grout lines to insure their longlasting beauty.”
The Sir Grout process is safe, odorless and usually takes
one day to complete – and homeowners can walk on their
tile floor within minutes! The grout looks new, uniform in color
and, if maintained properly, will retain its fresh look for years.
Guaranteed! Sir Grout also offers a maintenance program that
extends its warranty. A homeowner simply needs to follow the
Sir Grout prescribed cleaning program and use its PH neutral
soapless cleaner, which does not leave behind a soapy film that
traps dirt particles.
Sir Grout uses a non-toxic cleaning solution to pre-treat the
grout lines before using a commercial-grade vertical scrubber
and 300-degree vapor steam to remove embedded dirt
and open the pores of the grout – the key factor to properly

Bankruptcy May Provide Financial and Emotional Relief

that it felt good to cry tears of relief, rather than
tears of fear. I knew at that moment that my job as a

my work and the bankruptcy system had provided
a needed sense of relief for a scared, single mom in
financial distress.
Understanding Bankruptcy
Once a bankruptcy case is filed, the
automatic stay goes into effect and most lawsuits,
repossessions, and other actions to collect a debt
must stop and cannot proceed without permission
from the Bankruptcy Court. There are some

support cannot be discharged.
Domestic Support Obligation
The 2005 amendments to the bankruptcy
law created a term called a “Domestic Support
Obligation,” referred to as a “DSO.” A creditor who
is owed a DSO now has more rights and remedies. A
person who owes a DSO now has much less ability
to escape that obligation by filing bankruptcy. Debts
that are DSO’s are not eliminated (“dischargeable”)
in a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If one
of the spouses files a bankruptcy case, the creditor
may pursue the other spouse to collect the debt if
the debt is owed by both of them.
DSO’s have first priority status in a Chapter 13
bankruptcy. A court may not grant a discharge in a
Chapter 13 bankruptcy unless the debtor certifies
that the debtor is current on all post-petition DSO
payments. Bankruptcy trustees must inform DSO
claimants about the resources available to them to
collect their claims and of their rights under the
Bankruptcy Code.
While bankruptcy is considered a last resort and
is not the right answer for everyone with financial
problems, the system may provide needed relief

Why Wait to Feel Great?
By Jennifer Anzelmo
W
ant to look and feel
better within just
a matter of weeks?
The exercise discipline known
as Pilates can do just that,
offering benefits to individuals
regardless of age, gender or
physical ability.
Everybody’s exercise
While Pilates involves numerous methods, it
is perhaps most recognized through its matwork
regimen, a series of 25 exercises using the body’s
resistance to develop core strength. Matwork can
be a wonderful component of a complete Pilates
program. However, many individuals might be
limited in their ability to perform the exercises
due to certain medical considerations or a lack of
physical fitness.
The Pilates apparatus (the Reformer, Cadillac,
Stability Chair—a.k.a. Wunda Chair—and Ladder
Barrel) enables students of all levels to develop
core strength safely and effectively. What makes
Pilates unique—besides the use of inventor Joseph
Pilates’ genius-created complex equipment—is
that it intrinsically carries nearly all components
of fitness in a single workout, often within a single
exercise or movement.
Pilates incorporates core strength and stability,
balance, posture, flexibility and overall strength.
Muscles are simultaneously strengthened as others
are stretched while still others are stabilized. Pilates
works the body on a deeper level, essentially
working the body from the inside out by stressing
technique and form.
ability to develop customized Pilates programs for
specific groups or individuals.
Women have been experiencing Pilates in
record numbers, finding out firsthand that the
benefits are great and can be felt immediately. Pilates
creates a long, lean body by increasing muscle and
flexibility. The method builds strength and bone
density while increasing energy and decreasing
stress on the joints. Women, in particular, become
empowered to accomplish everyday tasks more
easily as they become functionally fit.
Top teachers
Care should be taken in choosing a Pilates
instructor. All Pilates programs should be
conducted by an experienced, certified Pilates
instructor who can inspect an individual’s medical
and exercise history, recognize her personal goals
and establish a program to meet specific needs.
Even a single session can offer insight into the
direction needed to create “the Pilates body.”
Transformotion
Mind-Body
Exercise
Studios—which began in Barrington nine years
ago and added a second location in Long Grove a
year ago—offers instructors trained and certified
in classical and contemporary Pilates. An excellent
workout is assured, but the focus also encompasses
educating and enabling students to achieve longterm results. The student’s whole being is integrated
and emphasized: mind, body & spirit.
Apparatus sessions are taught privately or in
classes of 4 or less students so instruction integrity
can be maintained. The Barrington studio offers
Pilates plus yoga, personal training, spin and
specialty classes. The Long Grove studio focuses
specifically on Pilates. Workshops and seminars are
offered at both locations. Instruction is available
from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Transformotion owner/founder Jennifer Anzelmo

trainer and group fitness instructor who travels
nationwide to bring her 21 years of experience to
instructors employed at private studios and large clubs.

A Solution to Cellulite
By Jennifer Klein
C
ellulite is a popular term
to describe fat deposits
under the skin. It is
characterized by a dimpled or
orange-peel appearance due to
structural changes underneath
the skin’s top layer. Cellulite is a
perfectly normal and harmless condition, however,
it is a cosmetic concern of many people.
Cellulite is a normal occurrence resulting from
uneven fatty deposits, mostly below the waistline.
In women, fat is arranged in large chambers
underneath a fairly thin layer of skin. In obese
(overweight) persons, too much fat is being stuffed
into these chambers, causing the pitting and bulging
of the skin. In addition, as women age, the fibers
shrink and thicken, pulling the skin downward.
This results in a quilt-like appearance on the skin
surface, especially in areas such as the buttocks,
thighs, or hips. Most women develop cellulite
as they age, regardless of their race. According to
some studies, as many as 95% of women over age
30 develop some form of cellulite in their body.
Many scientists believe cellulite is primarily
predetermined by one’s genetic makeup. However,
environmental as well as behavioral factors are also
believed to have some effects on the development
of cellulite. For further information check out
www.answers.com/topic/obesity.
The following factors are thought
to contribute to the development of
cellulite:
• Being overweight. Though cellulite also appears
on thin people, excess weight makes cellulite worse.
• Pregnancy. Cellulite problems get worse with
each successive pregnancy.
• Poor blood circulation. When there is impaired
blood flow to the fat-storage area, collagen fibers are
damaged due to lack of oxygen and accumulation of
toxic wastes, often caused by sedentary lifestyles.
• Poor lymph drainage. Our system acts like a
sewage system, filtering out and carrying away cellular
22
© Empower Woman Publications is Eco-Friendly
wastes and toxins. If it is impaired, toxic products
accumulate and inflate these fat cells, causing cellulite.
• Lack of exercise. Cellulite may be caused by
impaired blood circulation and poor muscle tone
underneath the skin, which are caused by sedentary
lifestyles.
• High fat and sugar consumption. This often
leads to excess, which causes increases in body fat and
thus, cellulite.
• Food allergy. Food allergy causes a variety of
symptoms including food craving, weight gain, bloating
and water retention.
• Highly processed foods that contain
preservatives, artificial sweeteners and other additives.
Heavy consumption of prepackaged foods causes build
up of these toxins in the body.
• Yo-yo dieting. Yo-yo dieting causes a woman to
lose fat in the upper body while increasing fat deposits
in the buttocks, thighs, and hips. Therefore, this practice
tends to make cellulite problems worse than before
dieting.
• Sun exposure. Prolonged exposure to the sun
accelerates the skin-aging process.
A Modern Day Solution To Cellulite!
The best solutions to cellulite problems
involve diet and exercise. Working out for at least
30 minutes five times a week firms up the skin by
increasing muscle tone and keeping connective
tissue fibers healthy.
But for many women, there is another way to
reduce resistant cellulite! Lymphatic drainage in
conjunction with radio frequency is an effective
solution. The Accent by Alma Lasers can help
jumpstart your cellulite reduction program.

The first device of its kind, Accent XL is a

HEADACHES: They don’t have to ruin your life
By Lawrence Robbins, MD, one of America’s Top Headache Doctors
Migraines
27 million Americans have migraines, which is
an inherited, physical illness (just like asthma or
diabetes). Headaches run in families, and are NOT
psychological. People with migraines have a number of differences in the brain, one being a lower
level of the brain chemical serotonin. A migraine
is a moderate or severe headache, often throbbing,
lasting hours to days; migraines occur with triggers like weather changes, menses, stress or lack of
sleep. Some degree of nausea, sensitivity to light or
sound, or dizziness may be present. Migraines often
begin in childhood, but may start at any age. More
women than men have migraines. Headaches may
continue into the 80’s, but they often improve after
age 50. There are a number of new and very effective migraine medications available to help. There
is no need to experience the pain needlessly.
Chronic Daily Headache (CDH)
CDH (headaches occurring every day or most
days) affects 6 million Americans. CDH is often
more debilitating than is migraine, as it can be
24/7 pain. We do have new treatments for CDH,
and better ones are on the way. CDH often comes
about slowly, over years, but it can begin over days
or weeks. As with migraine, there are a number of
changes going on in the brain, including low levels
of serotonin. CDH greatly decreases one’s “quality
of life” due to the constant pain.
Medications for Headaches
Each person needs their own, unique program.
There are daily prevention medications that can
be prescribed for CDH or frequent migraines. For
instance, with hypertension and headaches, we
prescribe various hypertension meds. We also prescribe various antidepressants for those with depression and headache. There are newer migraine
meds that work by increasing serotonin. There are
also vitamins and herb treatments for a more holistic approach. Low-dose Botox injections are another newer option providing help for up to 3 months.
We try and minimize meds, and achieve a balance
between meds and headaches.

Treatment Options
Outside of Medicine
Caffeine
Small amounts of caffeine often help, but
we need to keep daily caffeine below 200mg.
More than this may, in some people, increase
headaches. The typical cup of coffee has
about 150mg. of caffeine (instant has less),
while Starbucks has more(23mg./oz.). Soft
drinks have approximately 40mg. per cup, and
Excedrin contains 65mg.
Avoid Analgsic Overuse
OTC meds (ibuprofen/Excedrin/acetaminophen) should be limited to 2 per day.
Exercise/Yoga/Physical Therapy
• Aim for at least 20 min. daily of walking/
bike, etc.
• Yoga is often beneficial for headaches and stress.
• Physical therapy can be helpful for head-
aches and neck pain
Biofeedback (Bio)
Bio involves learning muscle relaxation
and breathing techniques; a few minutes a day
is often helpful.

work in partnership with you to answer all of your
questions and concerns as they guide you through
a fair resolution of the issues of your particular case.
While each divorce is as unique as the individuals
in the marriage, there are some common threads
running through every case.
What is Best for your Child? — Custody
Options
▶ Joint Custody
If parents are in agreement, are willing to
communicate with one another, and are able to
focus on the best interest of the children, then
joint custody is an option. Joint custody essentially
means that the parents share in the important
decisions regarding their children’s lives, such
as education, health and religious issues. Joint
custody can provide equal parenting time, but not
26
© Empower Woman Publications is Eco-Friendly
necessarily, as a 50/50 time sharing of the children
is not the norm.
▶ Sole Custody
If the parents are unable to communicate well with
one another, then joint custody may not be the best
option for them. Sole custody with a fair visitation
schedule may be a better resolution. If parents are
unable to communicate well, sole custody with a
fair visitation schedule may be a better resolution.
The custodial parent would make major decisions
regarding the children.
In all cases involving children, provisions will
be made for child support as well as for day care
expenses, health insurance, medical expenses, activity
expenses, etc.
Who gets what? — Maintenance, Asset
and Debt Allocation
Regardless of whether or not there are children,
the financial aspects of divorce must be addressed
and determined. Should maintenance, commonly
called alimony, be paid? What are the assets and debts
of your marriage and how should they be allocated?
Who keeps the house? Will it be sold? What part of
your investments and retirement benefits will you
receive? The answer to these questions depends upon
a balancing of numerous factors con- tained in the
divorce statute, which are also listed on our website,
www.digiacomo- somers.com.
Which Path is right for you? — Three
Ways to obtain your Divorce
▶ Litigation
Litigation is the traditional style of divorce,
in which legal counsel represents each party, and
the issues of your case are presented to the Court
for a final determination. This is usually a very
lengthy and costly process. Income, assets, and
liabilities are determined through a process called
discovery, depositions are taken and extensive trial
preparation is required. While litigation is also the
most expensive route to divorce, in certain cases
it is necessary. If your spouse is uncooperative,
unwilling to negotiate, untrustworthy, or hiding
assets, then litigation may be the most appropriate
approach.

Meet the Attorneys—Bringing Personal Experience
and Professional Guidance
Continued from previous page
▶ Mediation
Mediation is a voluntary process in which
both parties work with an impartial mediator who
helps resolve each parenting and financial issue of
their divorce. The role of the mediator is one of
an impartial facilitator, not an advocate, decisionmaker, or advisor. In this instance, both parties are
represented by their own legal counsel, who acts as
their guide and legal support person, throughout
the mediation process. Mediation can be much
more cost effective than traditional litigation.
▶ Collaborative Law
Collaborative Law is another cost effective,
voluntary alternative to traditional litigation. In this
process, both parties retain Collaborative attorneys,
who are trained mediators as well as trained in the
Collaborative law process. The parties and their
attorneys meet together as a team for 1 - to 2 hour
long settlement conferences to work through each
aspect of your divorce. Both parties may utilize
individual coaches, neutral child specialists and
financial experts to assist them in obtaining advice
and a fair outcome
Sensitivity to both the legal & emotional
issues is crucial
Both Carol and Kathryn agree, “It’s very
important for us to help our clients find the best
solution for their particular situation. Whether it’s
litigation, mediation, or collaboration, we focus on
the best possible outcome for our client.” “Perhaps
the word ‘sensitive’ is not one that many lawyers
use, but for us it is important to be sensitive to not
only the legal issues but also the emotional ones.
Our clients count on us to help them at a time
when they are often distraught, overwhelmed, and
at a loss as to how to best proceed. “ Both attorneys
agree, “We’ve been there and know how to reach
out and provide services and support to help a
person move through this process so that they can
move on with their life.”

A Canyon Ranch Getaway!
By Judy Kaplan, MS
W
ell, 2009 was a tough year! Feeling
emotionally depleted, physically
exhausted, and overwhelmed, I
didn’t know which way to turn. I was wondering
whether my hormones were out of whack, my
schedule too intense, or something even more
serious.
A GIFT OF A LIFETIME
An amazing turn of events! I had a gift placed in
my lap by someone very special to me; a weekend
at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts! Just
when you might be ready to throw in the towel,
something astounding happens. I felt a renewed
sense of calm, because having been to the Ranch
before, I knew that if there are answers to my
dilemma, the team at Canyon Ranch would help
me figure them out!
UPON ARRIVAL
The feeling of being nurtured began the
moment I was picked up by the Canyon Ranch
van escorting me to my home away from home for
the weekend. Swiftly taking me to the dining room
for a healthy feast, he delivered my luggage to my
room and provided me with the lay of the land. The
expansive grounds and all enclosed compound
housing the spa, meeting rooms, accommodations,
dining facilities and medical offices, were a sight for
my tired eyes. This was going to be fun, relaxing,
distracting and interesting.
and my feelings and what has been going on in my
life. As my story began to unfold, decompression
was beginning to take place. I left that appointment
feeling invigorated.
The balance of my stay included having
massages, exercising, attending lectures
and reading my books. I didn’t realize
how luxurious it would be to have TIME
to just read, relax and be pampered! I
found a cozy area with a fireplace and big
easy chair and ottoman. It became my
place to read and relax over the few days.
Mmm, I can still hear the crackling of the
fire and smell the warm aroma!
The lectures I attended were each
fascinating and helpful. I had learned about
using humor to ease life’s troubles, how to
cook with health in mind, how a shamanic
journey can enlighten you, and how to really
understand your body and what it requires to
be at it’s optimal health.
THE OVERALL EFFECT
Calming, relaxing, refreshing, rejuvenating,
revitalizing and luxurious are the words that come
to mind when I think back on my experience at
the Ranch. I came home feeling that I had learned
enough about my situation, my eating habits and
my daily schedule that I could TAKE AWAY some
good tools to change my life for the better!

THE PROGRAMS
Since THE TEAM had already sent me a
planning guide, my schedule was established and
I went to my very first appointment – clearing
my ENERGY BLOCKS! Wow! A combination
of talk therapy along with acupuncture, I felt
a sense of relief and peace. Never having that
type of experience before, though no stranger to
therapy (I am a therapist), I found the process
to be stimulating and enjoyable. Much of the
satisfaction was having the time for focusing on

Weight Loss & Detoxification
By Dr. Jill Balla Shaw, D.C.
T
he New Year always
brings thoughts of
losing weight and
starting fresh. We usually
start out with the best of
intentions but fade as the
winter drags on.
The Weight Loss Problem Clarified:
Weight loss is a simple concept ruled by physics:
1. Provide the body the nutrients it needs to function
2. Burn more calories than you take in
We get caught up on number one because we
don’t often feed the body the nutrients it needs
when trying to lose weight. Our impulse is to try
and “trick” our body into dumping the pounds
without us having to do the work with things like:
◀ Artificial Sweeteners
◀ Fake Fats
◀ Stimulants / Diet pills
◀ Empty foods (Frozen, preserved, and
pre-packaged)
These tactics can work, usually for a short time
but there is a price to pay. As the saying goes, “It’s
not nice to fool Mother Nature”. We have heard the
horror stories of diet pills that cause heart damage
and liver failure, that trans fats are the cause of
most heart disease and the neurological dangers
of aspartame. The US is the fattest but most
malnourished country in the world and we take
the most pharmaceuticals with the least amount
of “health”. Our children are the fattest and we are
29th in infant mortality (tying Poland & Slovakia).
What our bodies need
What our bodies are crying out for is real,
whole foods that are dense with nutrients and free
of toxins and pesticides. When we ingest toxins
our bodies will first try to get rid of them, but if
32
© Empower Woman Publications is Eco-Friendly
there isn’t enough fiber and a properly functioning
liver the body can tuck them away in fat cells to
protect us. Consider a shift in how you look at
excess weight, instead of the problem; it is likely a
symptom of the quality of food that we eat.
Some good rules to eating properly:
◀ Always eat food as close to their original state as ◀
◀
◀
◀
possible.
Don’t eat anything that won’t spoil & eat it before it does.
Choose whole eggs, real butter, a variety of proteins (beef, poultry, fish & seafood), whole grains and fresh vegetables & fruits.
Choose organic as much as possible.
Don’t eat man-made “food.”
Detoxification:
How it works & Why it works
A detoxification program is a great way to start
fresh. It can rid the body of toxins, refresh organ
function, normalize hormone levels and result
in weight loss. It can also help to identify food
sensitivities and break bad habits.
Some indications of toxicity in the body:
◀ Headaches
◀ Acne
◀ Infertility
◀ Fatigue, insomnia or restlessness
◀
◀
◀
◀
◀
◀
◀
Dark circles under the eyes
Poor memory
Joint pain
Diarrhea / constipation
Depression, anxiety, mood swings
Frequent illness, chronic cough
Stuffy nose, sinus problems
It is important that a detoxification program
is supervised by a trained healthcare professional
because if done improperly, it can make things
worse.
A properly done detoxification program
may provide:
◀ Reduction in pain (joints, spine, headaches)
◀ Increased in energy & metabolism
◀ Improvement in cholesterol numbers
◀ Improvement in digestive disorders & immune function
◀ Improvement in PMS, menopause, fertility
◀ Improvement in mood & stress management
Typically detoxification programs last 21 days
and involve a restricted diet with a well balanced
meal replacement and supplements.
For 2010, resolve to eat and live healthier and
let weight loss be an added benefit.

Is it Depression...Unhappiness?
By Dr. Gilla Davis
T
hese are difficult times for so many……
what will happen to the economy, health
care, jobs, retirement. The days are getting
shorter and often present with shades of grey.
Moods plummet, tempers flare and sleep becomes
an elusive luxury as we worry about the

therapy and self-care. There is often co-morbidity,
e.g., associated conditions…..sometimes related
and sometimes an attempt to feel better…..
alcoholism, drug abuse, food, are some examples.
Misguidedly, we are often reluctant to ask a
friend if they are depressed, or having thoughts of
harming themselves, fearful that it will trigger a bad
outcome. But, it can be lifesaving to ask….and to
offer to help that person get treatment.
All depressed people are unhappy….
but not all unhappy people have clinical
depression.
Happiness, and its absence, are topics of
research and interest.
Depression is an illness, most often a genetic
vulnerability triggered by a variety of factors. It is
often worse in the morning, improves somewhat
as the day progresses, and may be accompanied by
physical symptoms, a sense of dread, helplessness,
hopelessness, overwhelming guilt, difficulty
concentrating, and thoughts of suicide. It’s not
always easy to identify a depressed person….many
people suffer silently, appear fine, don’t ask for nor
get help. Sometimes, they appear agitated, anxious,
or sleep and eat excessively, or the opposite. The
disease called depression is like hypertension, or

January/February 2010 • www.empowerwoman.com
Why are some people happy when they are
surrounded by suffering and have little, while others
appear to focus on what is missing? Interestingly,
happiness also appears to be genetically driven. So,
how to get to happiness.
Unhealthy narcissism, focusing excessively on
what is wrong, whether in the outside world, or the
inner world of the Self, breeds contempt, despair
and unhappiness. Paradoxically, when we are in
“survival” mode, focused on food, clothing and
shelter, the idea of happiness doesn’t really matter.
So, it’s an indicator that those basic needs are being
met. That’s the good news. For those vulnerable to
depression, unhappiness can perpetuate an endless
loop. Evidence based medicine, using f-MRI’s and
PET and SPECT scanners reveals that the part of
the brain that is our pleasure center, where mood,
sex drive, etc., are located remains plastic. Positive
acts, thoughts and deeds do create new neuronal
pathways; we can actually learn to think differently.
Getting to happy means finding passion,
purpose, community and expressing
gratitude.
It doesn’t much matter whether that is done
cognitively, via meditation, or religion, but it does
require being mindful, being in the moment, for
at least some of our moments and accepting that

Where in the World is Your Self??
By Penny Powers Beitler, MS, LMFT
H
ave you lost your
SELF?
Let’s
search together to find it
again.
If you are in a committed
relationship, your Self
may be lost within the
relationship itself. Do you
always think of the needs of
your husband or partner ahead of your own? Do
you always think of the marriage first?
If you have children, no doubt they have taken
over the Top of the List. And don’t forget your
parents, in-laws, other relatives. Then there are
your dear friends, neighbors, and coworkers or
co-volunteers. How about the folks that you help
at church, temple, at the local hospital, or in your
book group?
Scamp your family dog, Salt and Pepper the
family cats, and Goldie the fish need love, attention
and feeding.
With all these Selves to attend to, WHERE in
the world do you fit in?
Our Caretaker Culture
Our culture still teaches us as a woman to be
first and foremost a CARETAKER. And that is
a wonderful and admirable person to be. Our
maternal instincts are satisfied and we feel a
wonderful sense of fulfillment. We feel wanted,
needed and loved. Let us honor that part of
ourselves!!
But we are Worn Out DEPLETED. We
are tired. And we may have lost a sense
of IDENTITY.
Remember when you were single? You were
perhaps a student, a career person, a dancer, a cook,
a swimmer, a doctor. But you also loved to paint,
ride horses, travel, read, or spend an evening alone
with Johnny Depp watching him be a sarcastic
Pirate. He played a ROLE in that movie – and now
you are doing the same in your own life’s “movie.”
January/February 2010 • www.empowerwoman.com
What does that mean? The labels you have now
-- wife, partner, mother, daughter-in-law, volunteer,
committee chairwoman, best friend – are ROLES
that you play, not an IDENTITY.
We are More Than Our Roles
It is so easy to become totally identified with
our roles that we forget about the most important
part of our SELF – our center, our SPIRIT. A role,
such as mom, wife, lawyer or volunteer – is a label
for something that we DO.
But we are human BEINGS, not human
DOINGS
Feeling depressed, anxious, tired, irritable, or
just plain confused can be symptoms of feeling a
loss of identity. This can happen at any time, but
here are some scenarios:
• You have your first baby. You leave your job
to stay at home. About a month after the birth of
your little darling you wonder if you will ever feel
like more than a personal assistant to a tiny little
crying bundle of joy. You miss the intellectual
stimulation of adults!! And you have absolutely
nothing to discuss with your husband when he
comes home at the end of his interesting and adult
oriented workday.
• Your last child leaves the nest. You
congratulate yourself on a job well done!! Then a
few weeks later you are bereft. You have so totally
placed your identity in one role – that of being a
mother – that you cannot figure out your “mission”
in life.
• You are a career woman. You move to
another country with your husband when he
receives a fabulous job opportunity. You cannot
work in this foreign country. Volunteer work is not
enough. Who are you?
Look Within
This is a time for OPPORTUNITY. But do not
wait until you are feeling depressed or depleted

“Your vision will become clear only when you
can look into your own heart. Who looks outside
dreams; who looks inside awakes.”

or lost. NURTURE YOUR SPIRIT throughout
your life. Your Spirit is the Real You – the LIGHT
WITHIN YOU.
But only YOU can take care of YOU. Don’t
expect others to do this work for you. You must
take care of your SELF before you can contribute to
the many “others” in your life. A good therapist can
help you rediscover inner MEANING. You cannot
be present for others until you have awakened your
own SPIRIT.

The Mammography Debate
What You Need to Know
By Dr. Michael J. Fox. Partner, Upright Imaging Center
exams do no good and that women shouldn’t be
taught to do them.
What This Means to YOU
It’s important to remember that the new
guidelines are for the general population and are
not directed to those who are at high risk for breast
cancer due to family history or gene mutation.
Women of high risk should continue following the
recommendations of their doctors and adhere to
the medical protocol that has been provided. But
for healthy women in their 40s and beyond, these
new findings present valid reason for question and
concern.
Now What?
F
ear of developing breast cancer is a genuine
concern for many women. Not only have they
been encouraged to conduct monthly breast self
exams, but once they reached the age of 40, they
were told to include yearly mammograms as part of
their health care regimen.
For almost two decades, this has been the status
quo as recommended by the American Cancer
Society and the American Medical Association.
But two months ago, a startling new report was
released that has women all over the country
scared, confused and concerned. Should they be
getting annual mammograms or not, and at what
age should they begin?
The Report and Its Findings
The U.S. Preventative Task Force, a governmentsponsored group comprised of leading scientists,
released a report stating that most women don’t
need routine mammograms in their 40s. According
to the report, if these women are healthy and are
at low risk for breast cancer, they should begin
getting mammograms at the age of 50 (not 40), and
continue to do so every two years thereafter. This is
a complete contradiction to what’s been preached
for years! The report also stated that breast self
36

There’s no doubt that these new breast cancer
screening guidelines have caused quite a bit of
controversy, uncertainty and anxiety. For many
women, getting a mammogram is stressful enough.
But with the task force’s recent findings, women
in their 40s have the added stress of determining
whether or not they should have a mammogram at
all! And, those who are older need to decide if they
should be getting them every year, or every other
year, as the report suggests.
There Are Options
Realizing that mammography has its flaws,
including painful compression of the breasts, a
high rate of false positives (leading to unnecessary
biopsies) and exposure to radiation (which can lead
to an increased risk of developing cancer), many

Not Sure About Mammography?
Consider Thermography
By Dr. Michael J. Fox. Partner, Upright Imaging Center
What is Thermography?
Thermography is a heat imaging screening
technique that does not use radiation or breast
compression to detect tumors. Instead, it uses a
high-resolution camera that reads the temperature
of the breasts and then converts it into an infrared
heat image for evaluation.
These thermal (heat) images are then analyzed
for abnormalities that may be signs of cancer
and other diseases. Healthy breast tissue usually
registers as blue, green or yellow, while cancerous
tissue will present itself as red or orange.
The Advantages of Breast Thermography
Breast cancer is a major health concern for
women of all ages. Thankfully, nearly all breast
cancers can be treated successfully if they are
found early enough. Breast thermography offers
women the earliest possible detection of cancer
by spotting irregular heat patterns (“hot spots”),
which often occur before a noticeable lump has
even been formed. Unfortunately, by the time a
mass is spotted through mammography, the tumor
is already years into its growth cycle.
Why It Works – How Cancer Grows
For cancer cells to grow faster than the
surrounding tissue, they need additional blood
flow. To get the additional blood flow, these cancer
cells not only tell the body to build new blood
vessels, but they also tell it to supply the greatest
possible volume of blood from the existing blood
vessels. Breast thermography detects the increased
blood flow that is needed by cancer cells in their
early development by measuring the amount of
heat radiating from the skin. The more blood flow,
the more heat. All cells of the body produce heat
through their normal function, but diseased cells
like cancer, usually produce more heat in their
earliest stages (before a tumor develops). This is
why thermography is such an important screening
for the first signs of breast cancer.

Breast Thermography is EASY
With thermography (which is
FDA approved), there is no pain, no
compression and no radiation! Patients are
positioned in front of the thermal imaging
camera while a technician takes some
digital pictures. Within 5-15 minutes,
the test is complete. The pictures are
then read and analyzed to determine the
amount of heat and the symmetry of the
heat patterns, which may indicate breast
disease. A report of findings is typically
provided within 24-48 hours. It’s simple,
pain-free and non-invasive!
Breast Thermography Image - Healthy Breasts
Two Scans Recommended
It is strongly advised that patients
have two breast thermography scans
within a 3-4 month period. The first acts
as a baseline, and the second is used as
a comparative measure. Active cancers
double in size and heat approximately
100 days apart. If there are any increased
heat patterns and/or vascular changes
from the first breast scan to the second,
additional tests would be requested, such
as an ultrasound or MRI. If there are
no changes from the first to the second
scan, breast thermography would then be
recommended on an annual basis.
It’s Up To You
Breast Thermography Image - Inflammatory Cancer
While thermography is still not as widely used
and available as mammography, it is becoming
more prevalent as women recognize its importance
and effectiveness. Not only is it safe, painless and
FDA approved, but it has been found to detect the
earliest warning signs of cancerous activity – years
before a tumor is formed! If you’d like to learn
more about the benefits of thermography, please
visit our website at www.uprightimagingcenter.com
or consider attending one of our upcoming events.

Terry Grossman, MD has co-authored a book
called Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well
Forever, in which he recommends thermography
breast cancer screenings beginning at age 25.
According to Grossman, studies comparing
thermography with mammography have found
the two procedures to be very close in their ability
to detect cancer. He also notes that thermography
has existed for 45 years and numerous published
studies have reported a very high degree of
diagnostic accuracy. Something to think about!

Adapting to Change in 2010
By Judy Kaplan, MS
challenged economic times, emotional strength
and adaptability have taken the leading position on
survival.
TODAY’S REALITY
For most people, loss is inevitable with each
year we live. It is a natural part of the life cycle.
Accepting what IS and not holding on to what
WAS, is an important key to mental health and
survival. Letting go of the past is no easy task for
any of us. There is comfort in what we knew, even
if our intellect feels sure that good times lie ahead
again. We cannot be certain of the future, so the
past is our “blankie.”
I
t is not the strongest who survive but the ones
most able to adapt to change, according to
Charles Darwin. The misnomer that strength
and might will carry you through life’s toughest
challenges has been widely accepted throughout
society by generations of the past. However, today’s
tough times are actually providing an entirely new
template of what SURVIVAL actually looks like
and what one needs to do in order to survive.
LONG AGO
Our ancestors needed brawn to find food, to
build their shelters, and to physically protect the
family from wildlife and enemy societies. Life was
about doing the hard work of living and surviving
day to day.
THE PAST AS WE KNEW IT
Things changed dramatically over time, as our
society became more sophisticated – daily physical
labor was replaced by an emphasis on brainpower
and achievement in other arenas. Over the past
four decades we have changed with the times by
establishing goals of sending children off to college,
moving up to the next larger home, focusing on
looking good, anti aging and keeping up with the
level of lifestyle established. However, in today’s

THE EMOTIONAL FACTOR
Whether it is in the financial arena, where
most people are working harder now, for less
money than they earned before or worse yet, find
themselves without jobs altogether. Or whether
your challenge is due to a loss of another kind, like
divorce, a failed friendship or loss of a loved one –
the changed circumstance can lead to depression,
feeling stuck or overwhelmed, or being ineffective
in your responsibilities. Sometimes, we don’t even
know what to do or how to do it in the present
unfamiliar state. This forces us to grow, to change
and to hopefully, adapt. Or, it keeps you stuck and
feeling despair!
With each loss, there is a common reaction –
the longing for the way things were, the sadness for
the things that we have lost and the disappointment
of no longer having the same situation.
Some grief and sadness is inevitable with any
kind of loss. But prolonged pining away for what
we once had, what we once did, what we once
looked like use up valuable energy for working on
today’s situations. It also doesn’t allow you to look
at new ways to handle the current problems.
have got! What are the things that have worked for
you in the past?
Here is a list of strategies that have worked
for others in the process of adapting to life’s
circumstances, no matter what they are. Perhaps
some of these will work for you. But, none will come
easy – it takes PRACTICE and DILIGENCE to
overcome the loss and build a new beginning with
different circumstances, people and environments.
Take it slow and make a few small changes a day.
Feel your feelings. Don’t
deny them or stuff them.
◆ Focus on your health, eating
right & exercise.
◆ Write your feelings in a journal.
◆ Count your blessings every day.
◆ Create an action plan of small daily things that are comforting.
◆ Seek out volunteer activities.
◆ Make an action plan for the bigger picture to change
your life.
◆ Say in the moment.

BUILDING SELF ESTEEM
Letting go of the past is necessary to the rebuilding of self esteem. Loss often makes people
feel like they have failed in some way. Feeling sad is
part of the process. Getting past sadness and letting
go is also part of the process.
Taking action is an antidote for depression and
anxiety. Making a plan takes your mind off of your
troubles and forces you to focus on something new,
productive and inspiring. When you pull yourself
out of a situation that is difficult, sad, overwhelming
or otherwise troubling, a natural outcome is to
feel better about yourself. You are relying on your
own resources to rebuild and reestablish your own
sense of security. Asking for help from people who
care about you is another way to build esteem, by
making you realize you are not alone.

Save Money or Pay Down Debt?
By Julie Murphy Casserly, CFP
A
frequent question
I
receive
is
whether it’s better
to pay off all of your debt,
or start saving money.
From a purely financial
perspective, the interest
you are paying on your
debt may be more than
the interest you could earn
on your savings or investments. In this case, you
may decide to just pay down debt. However, I have
found that those who stick to this strategy keep
recreating their debt cycles. When an emergency
happens and you have no emergency reserves,
what are you going to do? Yes, you will charge it!
Creating true abundance is about empowering
yourself to no longer be a victim of your financial
circumstances. It’s about taking charge of your
finances.
spending this extra money. Position yourself to be
“lucky” by paying yourself first.
Chipping Away at Debt
*The tips above many not be suitable for all people.
JMC Wealth Management advises clients on their
investment strategies on an individual basis.
There are many things you can do to start
reducing your debt. Here are just a few:
Get a 0% finance credit card – Shift your money to
a zero percent interest credit card. Visit
www.creditcards.com for help. If your credit score
is too low, consider hiring a company like www.
veracitycredit.com to assist you in cleaning up your
credit reports. To receive a special discount on this
service, e-mail me at [email protected].
Sell some assets to pay down your debt – Go
through your home. You likely have a basement
or closet full of things that could bring you some
money on eBay to help get those debts under
control.
Refinance - If you own your own home, lower
interest rates are obtainable by refinancing for an
amount to pay off your existing mortgage (if there
is one) and your other debts. If you want to keep
your current mortgage because you can’t get a
lower rate or it has a prepayment penalty, opt for
home equity loan or line of credit to pay off your
other debts. Since interest rates are expected to rise
over the next few years, be sure to get a fixed rate,
not variable.

Easy Ways to Save
The key is to start shifting your financial energy.
It’s important to put something into savings, even
if it’s only $10 per month, to get you in the habit
of saving. Every time you get a pay raise or bonus
or pay off some debt, take at least ⅓ or ½ of that
money and apply it to your savings or investments
monthly. Be sure to make this savings “automatic”
using some kind of direct deposit. If you don’t, you
may sabotage your good intentions and end up

What is Your Personal Brand?

■ Smile when you enter a room
■ Give a firm handshake
■ Dress appropriately
■ Help others whenever you can
Recently I read an article that involved
journalists discussing personal branding.
Drew McClellan, Top Dog at McClellan
Marketing Group, creates a great framework for
sharing your brand with the world, using the
analogy of a dandelion.
“Once you figure out what your personal brand
is all about.... you hold it out to the world, like a
dandelion. Sure...the wind will gently blow some
of the seeds along, letting them land somewhere
and take root. But...if you really want your personal
brand to be spread far and near...you need other
people. When someone holds a dandelion close to
their mouth and gives a big blow.... those seeds go
everywhere. What would make someone want to
use some of his or her power and influence to help
spread your personal brand? “
How do you determine the brand that suits you
best, the one that fits like an Armani suit and FitFlop
sandals? You follow the path that circles back to
your mainframe – you embrace your purpose and
passion. You are the brand from the moment you

As they sometimes will,
When the road you are trudging

And the debts are high,
And you want to smile
But you have to sigh,
When life is pressing you down a bit Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Success is failure turned inside out,
It is the silver tint of the louds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,

Are You Ready for an Identity or Image Makeover?
By Chris Hauri

quiz! Check off
all that apply to
you today:
___ Changes in health
associates all getting older. Hair color, comfortable
shoes and caring of elderly parents took the place
of PTA talk and bar nights. Our get-togethers
became laugh-fests of the latest odd place we saw
a hair sprouting or brainstorm sessions on what
a newly downsized 58-year-old would do for her
next career.
The more we talked, the more I heard. So I
created Mirror Image for women facing the issues
of aging. I’ve brought together highly talented and
creative women our age to share their knowledge
and resources in experiential workshops and a
timely website. And help us make over a bit of
ourselves.

If you’re one of the 38 million US women
over 55*, you’re likely to be in some of these
situations and need an image or identity makeover.
Americans have never lived this long, this healthy.
Nor have we ever been so inundated with media
messages, fashion advice, how-to help and ways to
spend money on ourselves.
Yet, many of us are still looking for the help for
“ME”, the service or workshop that brings insight
to our own lives that will make us feel good about
getting older.

Nail Fungus
By Maria Costa, RP
A
nail fungal infection may begin as a white
or yellow spot under the tip of your nail. As
the fungus spreads deeper it may cause your
nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling
edges, an unsightly and potentially painful problem.
You may have a nail fungal infection, also called
onychomycosis, if one or more of your nails are:
■
■
■
■
■
Thickened
Brittle, crumbly or ragged
Distorted in shape
Dull, with no luster or shine
A dark color
Risk factors
Nail fungus is more common among older
adults for several reasons, including diminished
blood circulation and more years of exposure
to fungi. Also, nails may grow more slowly and
thicken with age, making them more susceptible to
infection.
Other factors that can increase your risk of
developing nail fungus include:
■ Perspiring heavily
■ Wearing socks and shoes that hinder ventilation and don’t absorb perspiration.
Infected nails may separate from the nail bed,
a condition called onycholysis. You may feel pain
in your toes or fingertips and detect a slightly foul
odor.
■ Walking barefoot in damp public places, such as swimming pools, gyms and shower rooms.
When to see a doctor
■ Having a minor skin or nail injury, a damaged nail or another infection.
Once a nail fungal infection begins, it can
persist indefinitely if not treated. See your doctor
at the first sign of nail fungus.
Causes
Fungi are microscopic organisms that don’t
need sunlight to survive. Nail fungal infections are
typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group
called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds can
also be responsible for nail infections.
These microscopic organisms live in warm,
moist environments, including swimming pools
and showers. They can invade your skin through
tiny cuts or through a small separation between
your nail and nail bed. They cause problems only
if your nails are continually exposed to warmth and
moisture, conditions perfect for the growth and
spread of fungi.
Nail infections occur more in toenails than in
fingernails because toenails are often confined to a
dark, warm, moist environment inside your shoes.
Another reason may be the diminished blood
circulation to the toes, which makes it harder for
your body’s immune system to detect and eliminate
the infection.

■ Having athlete’s foot
■ Having diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system.
Complications
Nail fungal infections can be painful and may
cause permanent damage to your nails. Fungal
infections of the nail pose the most serious health
risk for people with diabetes and for those with
weakened immune systems, such as people with
leukemia, AIDS or those who’ve had an organ
transplant. If you have diabetes, your blood
circulation and the nerve supply to your feet can
become impaired. Therefore, any relatively minor
injury to your feet, including a nail fungal infection
can lead to a more serious complication. See your
doctor immediately if you suspect nail fungus.
Physician Visit and Treatment Options
You’re likely to start by seeing your family
doctor or a general practitioner. However, in some
cases you may be referred immediately to either
a dermatologist or podiatrist. An infection with
nail fungus may be difficult to treat, and infections
may recur. But medications are available to help
Empower Woman
clear up nail fungus. We at The Medicine Shoppe
Pharmacy, in conjunction with a number of area
podiatrists have developed a topical preparation
which contains three to four different medications
(depending on the formulation your physician
may request) that kill fungi. This preparation also
contains a drug that decreases inflammation in the
nail bed. It is prepared in a chemical that transports
all of these medications directly through the nail
and into the area where the fungi live. The advantage
to this preparation is that unlike oral medications
for fungal infections, it is not taken into the blood
stream and processed by the liver. This eliminates
the issues of potential damage to the liver that the
oral medications can cause. Please feel free to
contact us or have your healthcare provider call to
discuss treatment options.
We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday
season. Please look for our ad/editorial in future
installments of the Suburban Woman magazine.
