WELCOME U N L E A S H... GOVERNOR MIFFLIN HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNOR MIFFLIN SCHOOL DISTRICT CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2015-2016 Governor Mifflin School District EDUCATING, INSPIRING & EMPOWERING EVERY STUDENT EVERY DAY BELIEF STATEMENTS • We believe students learn best in an environment where they are not afraid of failing and they are encouraged to take risks. • We believe in developing the STEVEN M. GERHARD, Ed.D. SUPERINTENDENT competencies of problem solving, social/communication skills, technology and teamwork. • We believe in teaching our students to display honesty, integrity and respectful behavior through leadership and positive interactions with others. • We believe students learn best when they are prepared for the economic and social challenges of a global society. • We believe in rigorous curriculum for all students while attaining a clear acceptance for all diversity. • We believe it takes a team to provide an appropriate education for all: students, parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, advisors, cafeteria ACTIVITY TICKET PRICES Athletic activity tickets permit holders to attend all school-sponsored home athletic events free of charge, with the exception of playoffs. Student athletic tickets cost $25.00. Adult athletic tickets cost $65.00, or $50.00 if purchased after the fall season. Adults over 60 years of age and retired can receive a free activity card. These are lifetime passes and do not have to be renewed each year. To obtain an athletic activity ticket, please visit the Governor Mifflin Athletic Office located in the high school. SCHOOL CLOSINGS Decisions about school closings or late starts are normally announced via our ConnectEd phone notification system, posted on our school web site (www.GovernorMifflinSD.org) and forwarded to local radio/ television stations (WEEU 830 AM, WFMZ Channel 69, WGAL Channel 8, WIOV 105.1 FM and WRFY 102.5 FM) by 6 a.m. On occasion, an announced, delayed school start may change to a school closure. In this case another ConnectEd call will be made, our web site will be updated and the media will be alerted. Should school close early, secondary students are dismissed first, then elementary students. All early dismissals are announced via ConnectEd, posted on our web site and announced on local radio/television stations. Please refrain from calling the schools during these situations, as telephones are needed for emergencies. Please be alert to the possibility that school may close early. If you are not home during the day, make sure your children know what to do if they are dismissed early. staff, secretaries and custodians. We believe students should have a clear understanding of the world beyond their immediate community. • We believe the increasing impact of technology in the world must be acknowledged and embraced by teachers and administrators. • • We believe the ability to learn exists in every student. Being able to embrace this will lead to lifelong success. • We believe students will be more likely to flourish if a mutually respectful relationship is established between the teacher and the students. • We believe interpersonal skills and relationships are critical to the learning process. • We believe in providing a safe and engaging learning environment that honors different learning and teaching styles and displays respect for diversity. • We believe the single most important factor relating to student achievement is a competent, caring and driven teacher. BOARD OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS Members of the Governor Mifflin community serve on its Board of School Directors for four-year terms. As officials of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, they are elected at large from the five municipalities comprising the School District. School directors receive no salary or other compensation for their work, which is estimated by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to require a minimum of 20 hours a month for a total of 30 working days a year. The curriculum committee and regular school board business meetings take place on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The property committee and general work meetings take place on the first Monday of each month. The other standing committees (personnel and finance) meet as needed. Unless otherwise noted, meetings are held in the board room of the Education Center. The public is welcome at all meetings of the board. The meetings are announced on our district web site and posted at the Education Center on the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Waverly Street in Shillington. Formal voting action occurs during the public meetings. A portion of the regular business meeting is set aside for citizen questions. All parties wishing to address the board must complete and return a yellow card, available on the table by the entrance of the room, prior to each meeting. 2015-16 BOARD OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS James Ulrich, President Lisa Peterson, Vice President Elizabeth Adams Ronald Dunkelberger Jr. Donald Kennedy Jill Koestel Dr. Edward Michalik Jennifer Murray Dr. Michele Hill O’Brien Dr. Steven M. Gerhard, Superintendent Mark Naylon, Business Manager Non-Members John Stott, Esq. Solicitor GOVERNOR MIFFLIN EDUCATION FOUNDATION What is an education foundation? An education foundation is an independent, non-profit organization established to receive and allocate resources that will serve the district’s educational program. Through the foundation, donors can dedicate monetary gifts or tax deductible contributions of security, property, equipment and/ or other contributions that will be used to enhance the district’s educational program. What is the foundation’s purpose? The Governor Mifflin Education Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to seeking individual gifts and bequests and corporate gifts which can be awarded to support teaching deemed by the trustees to be innovative, advance excellence in education and be of mutual benefit to the school district and the local community. How is the foundation funded? Through its board, the foundation solicits contributions in the form of property or direct financial support. In addition, the foundation seeks contributions from a broader population base including alumni, parents, students and friends of the district. The district’s staff has also supported the foundation’s efforts by authorizing contributions in the form of payroll deductions. What type of programs does the foundation support? The foundation is designed to enhance the district’s educational program and support exciting and innovative ideas that serve to foster “cutting edge” approaches to learning. It is critical to note, however, that the foundation does not utilize funds to subsidize that which the district’s budget should finance (ie: field trips, text books, general supplies, etc.). Since its inception in 1994, the Governor Mifflin Education Foundation has underwritten grants totaling more than $280,000.
