Abundant Life Spring 2015
Abundant life SPRING 2015 EXCELLENCE IS AGELESS GALA CELEBRATES SENIORS, SUPPORTS Abundant Life MISSION ® Every year, Lutheran SeniorLife provides nearly $3M in benevolent care and subsidies for residents who have outlived their financial resources. The Excellence is Ageless Gala, held last month at Heinz Field, raised nearly $160,000 to ensure that these residents can continue to receive the care and services they deserve, and to continue to live an Abundant Life®. This year’s Excellence is Ageless honorees were Dr. Frank T. and Mary D. Baker, who have lived their lives in service to others. Dr. Baker currently serves on the Lutheran SeniorLife board of directors. Both have a long history of serving their community, volunteering their service with numerous organizations including Habitat for Humanity, St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Global Missions, Camp Lutherlyn, and countless others to improve the lives of those in need. “We are excited to be receiving this award,” Dr. Baker said. “We want to use this as an opportunity to lift up Lutheran SeniorLife, highlight their mission of Abundant Life®, and to be advocates for their services.” Steve Blass, former Pittsburgh Pirate, current member of the Pirate’s broadcasting team and long-time supporter of Lutheran SeniorLife’s mission, served as the master of ceremonies. He expressed his appreciation to those in attendance for their generosity. Steve Blass, 2015 Excellence is Ageless emcee, and his wife Karen, were presented gifts of appreciation from Lutheran SeniorLife for their dedication to fostering the Abundant Life® mission. Like us on Facebook www.lutheranseniorlife.org “As part of a team for many years, I am very aware of how many people it takes to make an organization successful. Thank you all for standing with Lutheran SeniorLife in support of its mission to provide Abundant Life® opportunities to older adults,” he said. Continued on page 10. At our Excellence is Ageless Gala, we had the privilege and honor to recognize Frank and Mary Baker as this year’s honorees. Over the years, they have assisted and supported many persons and initiatives throughout their local community and certainly throughout Lutheran SeniorLife. We are blessed to have such caring persons walk alongside us as we embrace our mission. In addition, our organization has been deeply touched by Steve Blass for his compassionate attention to the value of our programs. And as he continues to be a great voice for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he led our Gala with aplomb in support of our largest fund raising event of the year. When I see what these individuals have accomplished over the years both professionally and through their commitment to family and the neighbors in their communities, I am reminded that they are leaders in many ways unknown to us. They oftentimes do not walk where the path leads but where there is no path and they have created a trail. Our honorees this year serve as a great inspiration for our organization as Lutheran SeniorLife grows with new programs that create the abundance of life for those we serve. Oftentimes there are no paths – no trails that have been established as we create a new meaning for the gifts within aging. For our organization, we view aging as a time to grow in new ways - a time to contribute with deep meaning and a time to make sense of all the growing that we have already done and still plan to do. We view aging as a time to achieve the sweetest, richest and most unique self. Our honorees and emcee are unique and embody our vision to continue growing and giving back to those around us so that all can enjoy the abundance of life. David Fenoglietto, President and Chief Executive Officer, Lutheran SeniorLife *SWPA Synod, NWPA Synod, WVA-WMD Synod Michael J. Rubino, executive director of the United Way, Beaver County (l); Donna Van Kirk, director of system development, Lutheran SeniorLife; and David Fenoglietto, president and CEO, Lutheran SeniorLife, participated in Lutheran Service Society’s March for Meals Community Champions Week, part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the Meals on Wheels program. Portraits of Abundant Life This on-going series highlights Lutheran SeniorLife residents, program participants, staff and friends who are living their Abundant Life®. PASSAVANT COMMUNITY RESIDENT COMPLETES AND PUBLISHES HUSBAND’S BOOK Beverly Snyder recently brought her late husband’s lifelong work alive with the publishing of This Is My Beloved Son: Jesus, the Man. It is a story about how the couple’s love for each other, and their love for Jesus, made their lives more abundant. and she created the picture of Jesus exactly as I had envisioned it.” They all worked diligently, and the book was published in less than eight months, just in time so that Beverly could give it to family and friends at Christmas, which was her goal. Reverend and Mrs. Snyder moved into their cottage on the Passavant Community campus in 2009. Given Doyle Snyder’s kind and gentle nature and Beverly’s joyful spirit, it didn’t take long for them to make many friends and feel at home. Reverend Snyder also continued studying the Bible and working on his book, a lifelong endeavor, about Jesus as a man, as well as the son of God. Sadly, Doyle passed in February 2014, and Beverly was inspired to publish his manuscript. With the help and support of Passavant resident John Sloat, Beverly set about accomplishing the task. Reverend Sloat felt that Doyle’s work was important and would help people relate to the human side of In additional to its biblical insights, Reverend and Mrs. Snyder’s book is a tribute to a life made abundant by their love for Jesus and their love for each other, signified by 60 years of marriage and a beautiful family. Rev. and Mrs. Snyder Jesus and His relevance to their daily lives. Aside from proofreading the manuscript many times, Beverly also chose the title and was the creative director for the artwork on the cover. “I knew what I wanted,” she said. “I described the scene from Matthew 3:16-17 to Passavant resident and artist Wally (Waltraud) Hendel Abundant life Lutheran SeniorLife offers a continuum of care featuring senior living communities, personal care, Alzheimer’s care, home health and hospice, social and physician services. When I read his book, I can hear his voice. He had a beautiful voice.” This Is My Beloved Son: Jesus, the Man is available from Barnes and Noble and Amazon as a paperback and in an electronic version. The book is also available in the Library and in the Gift Shop at the Abundant Life Center on the Passavant Campus. v www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2015 3 ADULT DAY PROGRAM OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS, RESPITE FOR CAREGIVERS These services are especially helpful for older adults who are experiencing depression or grief, couples with one person as the primary caregiver for the other, parents living with adult children and adults requiring memory support. “For any senior, socialization is key to an Abundant Life®,” said Christine Macedonia, associate director of residential living at Passavant Community. “Caregivers often forget this piece because they are so busy taking care of other immediate, physical needs of their loved one.” My Day Out, Macedonia said, also provides much needed respite for the caregiver as well. “It gives them relief from constant caregiving and the chance to tend to their own needs while we take care of their loved one for a few hours.” Mary Kay Hart, a resident of Zelienople, brings her mother Freda Hart to My Day Out once a week. She said that the program has been a blessing for both she and her mother. “I didn’t want my mother sitting in front of the television all day,” Mary Kay said. “She can come here and see people her own age. Both her body and mind are getting much needed exercise, and the food is wonderful. She really enjoys being here.” My Day Out has both half- and full-day programs available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information about the program, please call Passavant Community at (724) 452-5400. v Responding to a need in the community and an appeal from some pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Armstrong County for an alternative to nursing home care for aging adults, Lutheran SeniorLife has partnered with ACMH Hospital to open LIFE Armstrong County. The new facility, located next to the hospital, officially opened its doors on April 1. LIFE (Living Independence for the Elderly) Programs help eligible older adults by providing comprehensive, coordinated medical care and adult day services at the LIFE Center, and can also offer supportive care and services in the participant’s home. LIFE Armstrong County center director Karen Paul explained that Armstrong County has a large population of older adults who wish to remain living independently in their own homes. “But in a rural county like Armstrong, healthcare can be very fragmented, and it can be very difficult to coordinate care, and receive the socialization that all seniors need,” she said. “The LIFE interdisciplinary team works closely with the participant and their caregiver to ensure that the participant receives individualized care and services.” LIFE Programs Executive Director, Toni Hively, shared that the partnership with ACMH Hospital plays a vital role in the success of the program. “Partnering with ACMH Hospital brings a level of comfort and familiarity to our participants and their caregivers because most of them have been receiving care and services from the hospital and its programs for years,” she said. Participants in LIFE Armstrong County will receive individualized care from an interdisciplinary team including a physician, nurses, social worker, dietitian, recreational coordinator and rehabilitation therapists. They will have access to transportation to and from the LIFE Center where they can see a doctor, receive medications, have lunch with friends, and enjoy recreational, social and exercise programming. “Part of being all-inclusive means that we can also help our participants at home,” Paul said. “That’s another advantage of the LIFE Program. Home care, housekeeping, shopping…those are all part of a person’s life – and we can help with that. Paul said that she, and most of the staff, are long-time residents of Armstrong County, have emotional ties to their communities, and recognize the need for LIFE services for their aging neighbors. “We understand, both personally and professionally, how these services can help people live a more Abundant Life®. We look forward to reaching out and helping everyone we can.” LIFE Armstrong County joins LIFE Butler County, a partnership with Butler Health System, and LIFE Beaver County and LIFE Lawrence County, partnerships with Heritage Valley Health System. For more information, visit our website at www.lutheranseniorlife.org. v Abundant life A new program at Passavant Community will help alleviate some of the challenges and worry for caretakers living on campus and in surrounding neighborhoods. My Day Out, an adult day program in the Abundant Life Center, offers a safe, caring environment for seniors along with opportunities for social, recreational, fitness and wellness programs, meals and medication management. Other services such as assistance with obtaining required therapies in the outpatient gym, physician appointments at the clinic, personal care, assistance getting to beauty or barber appointments and social service assistance are also available for an additional fee or co-pay. LIFE OPENS IN ARMSTRONG COUNTY Among other activities, participant Betty Morris created this beautiful painting at the My Day Out program. Freda Hart, My Day Out participant, baked cookies at the center to share with her friends. 4 The LIFE Armstrong County staff welcomed its first two participants, William Mauger (center) and Joanne Pintell (center left). www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2015 5 GRANT FROM VERIZON ALLOWS VNA PILOT PROGRAM TO EXPAND In Pennsylvania, chronic diseases are the main cause of death and disability. Studies show that post-hospital inhome care is effective in managing acute chronic disease issues, but when patients meet the maximum number of allowable days of payment established by the insurance provider, they are often left without the supervision, intervention and tools to manage their disease on their own. The Stay Well at Home program provides care and monitoring through its TeleHealth monitoring system, Patients in the program take their vital signs – weight, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen level and temperature – with the TeleHealth monitor which is provided to them as part of the program. Nurses at VNA receive the data instantly and then evaluate the patient’s needs. If necessary, they can initiate immediate action, sending a nurse to the patient’s home where they can administer medications or take other steps toward symptom management. If they do not receive the daily monitoring information from a particular patient, they can call the home or make a visit to check on them. Another important part of the Stay Well at Home program, Furrer said, is to teach the patients how to recognize and manage minor symptoms in a timely manner, before those symptoms become unmanageable, resulting in a trip to the hospital. “We teach health promotion, not just treat their current symptoms,” Furrer said. The grant will be used to upgrade the equipment used for disease management and to purchase educational resources to share with their patients. “Through this program, we hope to support the case for continued third party payment for the in-home treatment for chronic conditions, so that we can improve patient outcomes and prevent them from having to be re-admitted to the hospital,” she said. v Melissa Fazzino, LPN, VNA Home Tech, carefully analyzes patients’ vital signs that are sent to her electronically via the TeleHealth monitoring system. 6 Nearly 200 women, including LIFE Program staff, Lutheran SeniorLife employees and family members, attended the second annual LIFE Programs Purse Bash at the Mars VFW, raising close to $13,000 to provide Christmas gifts to more than 500 LIFE Program participants in four counties. them during the holiday. For some of them, the LIFE Blessings program Christmas gift may be the only one under their tree, and they are thrilled to take it home with them.” v The day’s festivities included lunch provided by Beyond Parsley Catering, raffles to win a designer purse or a gift basket, and the opportunity to browse vendor tables. Toni Hively, LIFE Programs executive director, thanked everyone for attending and supporting the LIFE Blessings program. “Our participants get very excited about receiving a gift chosen just for Many of the show’s attendees were the lucky winners of a purse from designers such as Coach, Vera Bradley, Ralph Lauren and more. VOICE AMPLIFIER EASES FRUSTRATION, IMPROVES SOCIALIZATION When Passavant Community resident Betty Gee was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease five years ago, her doctor told her that eventually she may lose the ability to speak due to changes in her brain – and they were right. Today, Gee’s voice is barely a whisper, making it difficult to have conversations with her family and friends, and to communicate her needs to her caretakers. “It’s very frustrating when people can’t understand what I’m saying,” Gee said. “We would literally have to put our ear right next to her mouth to Abundant life Thanks to a $15,000 grant from Verizon, Lutheran SeniorLife VNA, western Pennsylvania can now expand its current Stay Well at Home program to demonstrate that extension of in-home care will lead to better patient outcomes, reduced hospitalizations and ultimately to reduced health care costs. a personal response alarm system (PERS) and medication dispensers to people with conditions like heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). “This grant will allow us to continue to maintain contact with these patients,” said Rose Furrer, RN, MSN, director of Home Health, Complete Care and Hometech for VNA. “The technology we use in combination with the monitoring and clinical support can help reduce the hospital re-admission rate to almost zero.” SECOND ANNUAL PURSE BASH IS A SUCCESS be able to hear her,” said Carrie Henderson, household coordinator in the Abundant Life Center and one of Gee’s caretakers. “It was very tough for her,” Henderson said, “and I wanted to find a way to help her.” At the SilverSmart Technology Center at Passavant Community, Henderson found a voice amplifier – a small headset device with a microphone that projects sound, making even the softest voices sound much louder. TM “I liked it right away!” Gee said. “It helps me talk to my friends when we’re in the dining room,” she said, which had become nearly impossible. She began socializing more and in fact, led others in the dining room in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to one of the staff members recently. Gee said that she is far less frustrated now when she speaks. “When I don’t have it on and I am talking to someone, I sometimes try to use my hands to help show what I want, but that’s just no good. Now people can hear everything I say.” v www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2015 7 SPECIAL DELIVERY – Meals on Wheels valued service for clients Meals on Wheels provides a nutritious meal, a friendly smile and a safety check that helps keep 2.5 million seniors healthy, safe and living independently in their own homes each year. Now a part of the Lutheran SeniorLife family, Lutheran Service Society operates two Meals on Wheels programs in Beaver County in Rochester and Aliquippa, serving an average of 125 clients every day. Diana Dengel, the Aliquippa site coordinator is on a mission to serve even more. Each day, Dengel and her dedicated group of “A lot of our clients are age 70 and above,” Dengel said. “They don’t want to give up the ability to do things for themselves. This is our way of just helping them out.” As important as the healthy meals they deliver, Dengel said, is the social interaction the clients receive from the volunteer delivery drivers. “The volunteers make sure they see and talk with each client they deliver to. Families are secure knowing a volunteer will be knocking on the door every day and visiting with their loved one for a few moments,” she said, explaining that emergency contact information is kept on each client so that she can follow up immediately if something seems amiss. All of this for a daily donation of just $5. Dengel said that both the Aliquippa and Rochester sites also depend on donations from businesses, organizations and individuals to help cover overhead expenses, as well as cover the cost of meals for clients who can’t afford to pay. “Striving to keep the senior citizens of our community safe, secure and nourished in their own homes is our goal, and we take pride in fulfilling that mission.” v Meals on Wheels volunteers like Michael Dengel (above) delivery a healthy meal to more than 125 clients in Beaver County every day. 8 For two VNA, western Pennsylvania employees, caring for others isn’t just a job – it’s a mission. In March, Jim Lewis, spiritual counselor and Renetta Winkler, RN, wound ostomy continence nurse traveled with 10 others to Mombin Crochu, Haiti, to help its impoverished residents. They brought with them $73,000 worth of medicines and supplies donated by Global Links and the Bother’s Brother Foundation in Pittsburgh. Mombin Crochu has a population of about 20,000 people, most of whom live below the poverty level. There is no running water, no sewage and sporadic electricity, which forced Winkler to be very creative when treating patients, she said. She made a solution of vinegar and water which she used to clean up after treating patients. Winkler remembers one patient for whom she treated a foot wound, which she later discovered was due to large hole in the man’s shoe. In addition to helping heal the wound, Winkler gave the man her own shoes to keep his feet protected. This was Lewis’ fifth trip to Mombin Crochu since 2000. He has become friends with many of the people he has worked with, including Maudelin Mesadieu. From 2003 to 2012, Lewis and members of his church supported Mesadieu financially through medical school. Mesadieu has since graduated, become a physician and has opened a medical clinic in Mombin Crochu. “I love this country,” Lewis said. “I feel like with the relationships I’ve made, I’m returning to visit family. I also return because the need is huge and helping allows me to feel like I’m making a difference.” Educating the Haitians about health care was a large part of their mission, and can make a tremendous difference in improving the conditions there. “I would like to do a lot more education next time, working on the resources they have and going from there,” Winkler said. v Abundant life Recently retired from the postal service, Dengel along with her husband Michael began volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program and very quickly became passionate about her work. “I didn’t realize the need until I went out into the homes on deliveries,” Dengel said. volunteers prepare and package meals consisting of a nutritious three-course tray meal and a bag lunch containing bread and butter, a sandwich, fruit and a dessert for delivery from the House of Prayer Lutheran Church into Aliquippa, Hopewell and Center Townships. Volunteers at the Rochester site operate out of Grace Lutheran Church and serve Rochester, East Rochester, Ambridge, Beaver, Conway and New Brighton. VNA EMPLOYEES PROVIDE Abundant Life® TO IMPOVERISHED HAITIANS Renetta Winkler and a few of the Haitian children she served on her recent mission trip to the Haitian town of Mombin Crochu. www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2015 9 EXCELLENCE IS AGELESS GALA HONORS SENIORS, CELEBRATES Abundant Life ® Continued from front cover Attendees had the chance to bid on silent auction items, many of which were handcrafted by Lutheran SeniorLife residents, staff, board members and friends. “I have been to many galas over the years, and this aspect of Lutheran SeniorLife’s evening is wonderfully unique. The artists are sharing their abundance of talent with us,” Blass said. David Fenoglietto, president and CEO of Lutheran SeniorLife, explained that Lutheran SeniorLife continues to provide quality programs and services that are consistent with the ever-changing needs of seniors. “Our mission is to enrich the lives of older adults in a faith-based environment so that they can enjoy the abundance of life regardless of their physical condition or financial circumstances. We are committed to never asking someone to leave their Lutheran SeniorLife home due to a lack of resources,” Fenoglietto said. v George Ehringer, Lutheran SeniorLife board of directors; Patty and Tom Grden Rick Solak and Carol Achezinski, Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation board of directors Dr. Frank T. and Mary D. Following McElravy’s death, Pendleton and her sister, Lois Lucas, planned to make the bequest in memory of their mother. As both Pendleton and Lucas have also both passed away, St. John Specialty Care Center is now the recipient of their kind gift. The bequest was made through the estate of Jean Pendleton, daughter of Madge Lerch McElravy, who lived her final years at St. John before passing away at the age of 100 in “They (Jean Pendleton and Lois Lucas) were very pleased with the care their mother received at St. John,” said Mark S. Riethmuller, attorney with Speakman, The benevolent care fund supports residents at Lutheran SeniorLife who have outlived their financial resources. FRIENDS GATHER TO SUPPORT HOSPICE One hundred fifty friends of VNA, western Pennsylvania gathered at the Butler Country Club in April for the 10th annual Friendship Luncheon. Mistress of Ceremonies for the beach-themed event was Kathy Gregory-Steiner (Kate), from WISR 680 Radio’s Coffee with Kate morning show. Proceeds benefit Friends of Hospice, which provides support to patients with unique needs. In the past, Friends of Hospice has paid for hotel stays, holiday dinners and other meals, appliances, utility bills and even a wedding cake for a ceremony held at the Inpatient Hospice unit. Attendees, many of whom have been touched by hospice in some way, enjoyed lunch and a gift basket raffle. Entertainment by the Strolling Strings from Butler High School was donated by the group’s instructor, whose mother was a hospice patient years ago. Margie Walsh, executive director of VNA, western Pennsylvania, extended her sincere thanks to all who have generously supported VNA and the Hospice program. v Kathy GregorySteiner and some of her family enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at the Friendship Luncheon.
