Canada has a total of 30 athletes entered in the Olympic rowing regatta. In 2008 at the Olympics in Beijing, Canada won a gold (men’s eight), silver (men’s pair) and two bronze (lightweight men’s four and lightweight women’s double). High Performance Program Support Rowing Canada Aviron’s senior team has two main training centres – Victoria, B.C. (Elk Lake) and London, ON (Lake Fanshawe). Own the Podium supports the High Performance program, and has supported the development of indoor erg training facilities at both these training centres. OTP has provided additional support for extensive warm-­‐weather training camps. Through OTP funding, rowing as been able to establish world-­‐class IST support services in partnership with CSC Pacific and CSC Ontario; OTP made it possible for our sport to hire world-­‐class coaches, technical support staff, and has given us access to world-­‐class sport science and sport medicine personnel. Rowing Canada and its funding partners also have been instrumental in creating and running a development program, in partnership with the provinces, to foster the next generation of podium performances. In addition to Sport Canada, Own the Podium, and the Canadian Olympic Committee; Rowing Canada is supported by many private companies and individuals. It also has key partnerships with suppliers for equipment and other services. Rowing has been staged at every Games since making its debut on the Olympic program at Paris in 1900. Women’s rowing events joined the Olympic program at Montreal 1976. •
Races are 2,000m, with six lanes used. A finals determine places 1 to 6. B finals determine places 7 to 12 and so on. •
Coxswain – The coxswain, or cox, typically sits at the stern and is responsible for steering the boat and directing the crew. At the Olympics this applies to the men’s and women’s eights. Lightweight – In women’s lightweight events, no rower may weigh more than 59kg, with an average weight per crew member not exceeding 57kg. For men, the single-­‐
rower maximum is 72.5kg, and the maximum crew member average shall not exceed 70kg. Scull – To row with two oars, one in each hand. This includes a single, double, and quad. (Sculling pictured at right.) Sweep – To row with one oar. This includes the pair, four, and eight. •
