Hapag-Lloyd is a leading global liner shipping company. More than 135 modern
ships, almost five million containers (TEU) transported in a year, 6,900 motivated
staff in more than 100 countries, networked through an IT system that is the industry
leader. For more than 160 years Hapag-Lloyd has set industry-wide benchmarks for
reliability, service, productivity and environmental protection. In the fiscal year 2010
Hapag-Lloyd achieved a revenue of EUR 6,204 million as well as an adjusted EBITDA
of EUR 904 million.
The Objective: Automation of Processes
At Hapag-Lloyd AG, all postings in the general ledger accounting as well as AP/AR
accounting were performed manually in the past. The bank statements retrieved by
the bank communication software were printed, distributed to the staff and posted
manually. These manual processes were time-consuming and expensive, and resources could not be used in an optimal way. The complex structure and the size of the
group demanded standardized processes around the globe and thus a solution that
could be used internationally.

Using the SAP® electronic bank statement was not
feasible as it did not meet the demands of HapagLloyd. Therefore, Hapag-Lloyd required a new software that would deliver additional features beyond
the SAP ® standard and enable a global use. This
was the determining factor in Hapag-Lloyd‘s decision to use the Hanse Orga FinanceSuite AutoBank
Automatic Cash Application. The complete integration of the software in SAP® also has the advantage
that the existing SAP ® installation can be used and
interfaces with external systems can be avoided.
Hanse Orga also convinced Hapag-Lloyd with its
experience from many international projects. Hanse
Orga not only provides a software solution but also
user manuals, reliable project management and a
helpline; factors that should not be underestimated
for an international rollout. In addition to the professional solution and the international experience
of the project partner, the business case that was
carried out confirmed Hapag-Lloyd‘s decision. The
results of the business case projected a future automatic assignment rate of at least 84 %. Additional
functions, such as the Performance Cockpit, the optimized postprocessing, facilities and the interaction
with the SAP® Dispute Management further supported the decision.
The Expectations of Hapag-Lloyd
AG Were Exceeded
The significant amount of time that is now saved
and the setup of standardized processes made
the project a complete success. The Go-Live took
place in March 2011 after only five month. The results exceeded expectations: instead of the projected 84 % an average automatic assignment rate of
88 % was achieved. Hapag-Lloyd AG now no longer
needs paper-based bank statements and postings
are processed significantly faster, facilitated by the
standardized posting logic. In order to streamline
their processes all over the world, Hapag-Lloyd AG
now prepares the global rollout of the FinanceSuite
AutoBank Automatic Cash Application.

Automatic Cash Application
The FinanceSuite AutoBank Automatic Cash Application optimizes the automatic cash application process through intelligent reconciliation features for
bank statements, incoming checks, remittance advices and lockboxes. The module is fully embedded
in SAP® and ensures highly automated processes.
In addition, intelligent and intuitive post-processing
capabilities such as filter principles, detailed value
searches, a dispute monitor and special main/sub
rule techniques enable a better exception handling.
Thanks to this software solution, unparalleled matching rates are achieved, unlocking efficiencies in
the Order to Cash Cycle and driving down DSO.
