Location
“Olean, New York... the Enterprising City with the Hometown Touch.” That sums up the unique quality of life
citizens enjoy in Olean. There’s an energetic spirit and outstanding resources here that one might expect to find in
America’s largest cities, yet there’s a sense of pride and community in Olean that reflects traditional American values
so often overlooked in other areas.
The City of Olean is the major commerce and industrial center for Cattaraugus County and the surrounding
counties in New York and Pennsylvania. Its location provides for easy access to the major markets throughout the
Northeast, including Canada. These areas include Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton, New York City and Boston,
Ma. Within a 500 mile radius a total service U.S. population of over 70,000,000 exists and to the North we have
approximately 62 percent of the total population of Canada and close to 80 percent of all manufacturing facilities
that are located in Canada.

from highways such as Interstate 86 and US Route 219, to accessibility of rail and air transportation centers.

History
The area was first settled around 1765, called by the Indian name Ischua. It remained sparsely populated until 1804
when Major Adam Hoops, a surveyor and Revolutionary War veteran, acquired the land and gave it its modern
name. The name Olean probably came from the local Oil Springs and the Latin word oleum. The Post Office
recognized the new town as Olean Point. In 1823 the city is called Olean, without the Point, on county maps.
Before canals or railroads had become widespread, the main means of travel were either by cart or small boat,
making the Allegheny River a major transportation route. Olean grew quickly as a transportation hub for migrants
taking the Allegheny River into Ohio. For much of this era, Olean was larger and better known than its northern
competitor, Buffalo. This period ended with the creation of the great canals, especially the Erie Canal in 1825.
Timber was a major industry in New York and Pennsylvania between 1830 and 1850, and Olean was the chief
timber town in the region during those times.
After river travel declined, Olean became the regional railroad hub. The town was the crossroads of several
railroads, a situation which endures today with the WNY & Pa RR.
When oil was rediscovered for commercial use during the Pennsylvanian oil rush, Olean was the railroad and
pipeline hub for the surrounding oil region. The operations headquarters of Standard Oil’s New York affiliate,
Socony, was based in the city. Oil produced on both sides of the state line was transported to Olean for rail travel.
For a short time, Olean was the world’s largest oil depot, complete with a “tank city” on the edge of town. A
pipeline was also built linking the city to Standard Oil refineries in Bayonne, New Jersey. The oil industry maintained
a presence in the city until 1954, the same year in which Olean’s population peaked.
Oil also produced Olean’s highest ranking politician. Oil executive Frank W.
Higgins was Governor of New York from 1905-1907. To this day, Olean is
one of the few smaller cities in New York State to be home to a governor.
Olean gained some notoriety as a major stop on
bootlegging routes during Prohibition in the 1920’s. Local
police turned a blind eye to organized crime activity.
Nicknamed “Little Chicago” in the press due to its
connection with mobsters and bootleggers, Olean was
frequently the stopping place of Al Capone.
Education
The Olean City School District was incorporated in 1877 and encompasses the entire City of Olean and portions
of the Towns of Olean and Portville. The school district provides public education from Pre-K-12th grade and is
governed by a nine-member board of education. Included in this district are four elementary schools, one middle

Portville Central School District is also governed by a nine-member Board of Education, serving the needs of
close to 1,000 students Pre-K-12th grade. Class sizes are small, with a 12.8:1 student to teacher ratio. The district
buses approximately 90 percent of the students. The school includes an all-weather outdoor running track, soccer
and football stadiums, athletic fields, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a nautilus exercise center.
Allegany Limestone School District has been ranked #1 School District in Cattaraugus County and ranked #25
out of 97 school districts in Western New York, according to Business First. The district educates more than 1,300
students in grades Pre-K-12 and houses two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. For additional

Archbishop Walsh Academy is a private, coed Catholic school affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. In the
Franciscan tradition, Archbishop Walsh Academy is dedicated to providing a quality Catholic education and a solid
academic foundation while fostering spiritual growth. Walsh is actively pursuing accreditation for the International
Baccalaureate high school diploma program. Walsh will be one of only 2,700 schools worldwide offering this
acclaimed curriculum, and the only one of its kind in the area.
Founded in 1858, St. Bonaventure University is
located on 500 acres. It requires all students to take 40
percent of their total credits in core liberal arts
courses: literature, history, philosophy, classics, art and
the fundamental sciences. The university offers 31
undergraduate majors- elementary education,
journalism, psychology, accounting, marketing, finance
and management are most popular. Undergraduate

Olean Business Institute has been recognized within
the community and surrounding area for more than 40
years. It provides practical and professional training for
individuals aspiring to pursue a career in business or
technology. Students enrolled in the Associate Degree
programs of management, accounting, office technology,
paralegal, computer technology, administrative professional
and health information specialist have the opportunity to
demonstrate skills learned in the classroom and gain field
experience through the college’s internship program. For

Jamestown Community College is a multi-campus
institution with N.Y. locations in Jamestown, Olean,
and Dunkirk, as well as in Warren, P.A. JCC is an
open admission community college. The minimum
requirements for admission are graduation from an
approved secondary school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma and acceptable scores on
the American College Testing Assessment Tests. The
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American
College Test (ACT) are not required for admission.

Close by is the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, a four-year
college of the University of Pittsburgh system that has more than
1,600 enrolled. The school offers 41 majors and more than 50
minors on its 317-acre campus. With small class sizes (about 18

relationships with peers and professors to last a lifetime.

The Olean Center Mall, located in downtown Olean, is open seven days a

Healthcare
Excellent health care is readily available to the local
community from all fields of medicine in the greater
Olean area. In fact, the area enjoys one of the most
attractive physician/resident rates in Western New
York.
Olean General Hospital is a 186-bed, non-profit,
acute care hospital. For more than 110 years, the
hospital has fulfilled its mission of providing the
highest quality care services to the residents of
Olean and its surrounding communities. The hospital’s core services include radiology/MRI, laboratory, outpatient
procedures, physical therapy, surgical center, 24-hour emergency department, maternity (family birthing unit),
dialysis and ICCU. Olean General Hospital and Bradford Regional Medical Center have taken a significant step
aimed at providing greater health care opportunities in the region by integrating under a new parent company,
the Upper Allegheny Health System. Approved and effective as of November 5, 2009, the integration will enable
both hospitals to better respond to health care needs of the region and financial challenges that are the result of
reductions in reimbursements from health insurers and payers.

The ReHabilitation Center has been serving
people with developmental disabilities in the Olean
area for more than 45 years. The agency assists
more than 650 people every day to improve their

Mercy Flight has been a unique operation since its
inception in 1981. As the pioneer air-medical service
in New York State, Mercy Flight was one of the first

main base of operation is now at the Buffalo Niagara
International Airport. In an effort to even better

Worship
The greater Olean area offers a diverse group of places of worship, no matter your beliefs. And while the area
offers that diversity, the community exhibits unity within that diversity. Pastors of several local Christian churches
and leaders of other faith traditions represented in the region such as Baha’I, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism
and Native American, join together on occasion for inter-religious events. Interfaith celebrations and observances
are held on numerous occasions throughout the year, most notably Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King Day.
People of all different faiths also come together to rally around similar causes. Genesis House, the Warming House
and Interfaith Caregivers are just a few examples of community groups from different faiths pitching in to help
those in need. Genesis House is a temporary shelter for the homeless, the Warming House provides food to those
in need, and Interfaith Caregivers organizes volunteers to assist the elderly. Each of these causes boasts volunteers
from across the religious board.

Olean is rich in recreational opportunities for everyone.
The area offers excellent outdoor recreational
opportunities, as well as fun things to do indoors.
The Allegheny River Valley Trail is a 5.6 mile
recreational trail that runs through Olean, Allegany
and the St. Bonaventure University campus. It is used
for hiking, running, biking, roller-blading and crosscountry skiing. The area also offers plenty of other
physical activities, as well. The Olean Family YMCA
promotes strong families, healthy lifestyles, and social
interaction. It offers exercise classes, opportunities to
join recreational sport teams, swimming, etc. Eade’s
Fitness, another local physical fitness facility, is a 24hour gym that allows you to get a work-out whatever
your schedule.
If you prefer to spend your recreational time indoors, the Olean area can satisfy
you, too. The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on the St. Bonaventure
University campus is home to countless stage productions and art exhibits all
year long. But there are multiple theater groups and dance studios from which to
choose. Olean Community Theatre has been a part of the community for more
than 30 years, striving to stimulate and encourage interest in the dramatic arts and
enrich the community by providing opportunities for theatrical involvement. Olean
Theatre Workshop, another local theater group, also stages productions year-round
and offers constant opportunities for you and your family to get involved.
Allegany State Park, located just miles from Olean via I-86, offers many recreational
activities. Here you can camp, hike, swim, cross-country ski, and bike, among other
things. It is ideal for group camping, whether you prefer to pitch a tent yourself
or stay in one of the many cabins the park has to offer. Also nearby, is skiing at

high schools and St. Bonaventure

football, Buffalo Sabres hockey and Buffalo Bison baseball.

Rock City Park is located about five miles south of the City
of Olean on Route 16. There you will find a breathtaking view
overlooking the Enchanted Mountains, and plenty of hiking
trails to wander through to enjoy the sights. The park is also a
great place for group picnics, reunions, weddings and parties.

Another local favorite is Sprague’s Maple Farms, located
just outside of Olean on Route 305 North in Portville. Learn
the tradition of “maple sugarin” and watch tree tapping
demonstrations during the maple sugar season. You can visit
the Pancake House & Restaurant year round, featuring many
mouth-watering hearty meals selected from a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu using their very own maple

Located at the top of Lillibridge Road in Portville you will find Pfeiffer Nature Center, which is one of the
largest privately owned, old growth forests with trees dating back 400 years. The center offers guided nature walks,
interpretive activities and tours for groups and classes, day camp
for youths ages 8- 12, and historic cabin tours. For additional

You can take a walk back in time to the late 1800s by touring
the Fannie E. Bartlett Historical Center on Laurens Street in
Olean. The house was originally built in 1881 and purchased by
Frank and Fannie Bartlett in 1891, when they began an extensive
renovation project in which he hired artisans from Italy that spent
almost two years sculpting and carving, setting marble, laying and
affixing several inlaid woods to create the intricate detailed work
you will see today while touring this grand house. Also displayed
are a number of furnishings that belonged to New York State
Governor, Frank W. Higgins. Behind the house is the
Olean Point Museum. The converted carriage house displays
items from the railroad, Genesee Valley Canal, the trolley

Approximately 20 minutes west of Olean and just off Route
I-86 at exit 20, you’ll find the Seneca Allegany Casino. Try your
luck with over 1,700 video slot machines, table games and bingo.
Here you will also find great dining, with a steakhouse, an allyou-can-eat buffet, a fine-dining Italian restaurant, a 24-hour

The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC), located at 120 N. Union St. in downtown Olean, has
