CLUB REMAINS
IN A STRONG
POSITION!!!
At the Mar. 30 Board
meeting the Board of Directors approved
the 2016-2017 operating, capital and cash
flow budgets. 2015-2016 looks to finish
strong and we have achieved many things
to strengthen our position and enhance the
membership experience. Our staff continues
to be our strength and their commitment to
adding value to membership has been and
will remain priority number one.
After careful review and discussion, the
Board has approved a $25 dues increase
per dues equivalent member effective May
1. $10 of this dues increase will go to cover
the increase in operations on the golf course
and to cover the continued minimum wage
increase. All other operational expense
increases will be absorbed by the proposed
operational revenue increases such as
merchandise sales, guest fees, service fees,
etc. The remaining $15 dues increase will be
the first year increase of a three-year plan
to build into our dues structure the funds
needed to replace all of our current assets
on a timely schedule to ensure our club
remains fresh, clean, and operational. All
explained in detail at the Talk & Taste Town
Hall meeting held on Apr. 7. We will again
address this topic at our annual meeting on
May 17, in case you missed the town hall.
ON-LINE SURVEY ACHIEVES
RESPECTABLE RESPONSE RATE
Again, all levels of club membership had
the opportunity to participate in the annual
satisfaction survey, which we conducted
online by a third party operator. The
purpose of the annual survey was threefold:
•
| DU N C A N RENO, G E N E R A L M A N AG E R
To measure the degree of satisfaction
of our members as it relates to the
services we provide, the playability of
4 | DEL RIO COU NTRY CLU B
•
Specific questions regarding value, the
tennis building, and club invitationals.
•
To allow all members a voice that
will assist in establishing strategies to
improve the quality of the club.
The summary of the results were mailed
to each member for review. A detailed
analysis of the survey is available in the
office or on the website. The results of our
annual membership satisfaction survey
show continued improvement in all areas of
the club. We thank the 300+ members (47
percent response rate) who took the time to
complete the survey. We will again highlight
the results of the survey at our
annual meeting.
DEL RIO ANNUAL MEETING …AND
NEW BOARD MEMBER ELECTIONS
The Annual Meeting, scheduled for May
17 at 6 p.m. will be located in the banquet
room. Presented at the meeting will be the
election results for new directors along with
the year’s annual report. Candidate’s Night
and Bylaw Amendment Town Hall Meeting
is scheduled for May 11 at 5 p.m. Posted in
the lobby are pictures and a brief biography
of each nominee for the Board of Directors.
We would also like to recognize and thank
our outgoing Board of Directors who
each served three-year terms with total
commitment toward improving Del Rio.
Each of these people played a significant role
in the success of our operation, help us in
thanking them for a job well done: Randy
Clark, President; Tony Bruno, Membership
Chair; Scott Castle, Green Chairman; and
Jon Zagaris, House Co-Chairman.
WOULD SERVING ON A
COMMITTEE APPEAL TO YOU…?
As we move into our next fiscal year, we
encourage all members of the club to get
involved in club committees. It is a great
way to learn more about the operation
of the club and challenges we face each
day to improve our service and value to
the membership. If, in the future, any
proprietary member is interested in running
for the board of directors, we recommend
getting involved on a committee. Each board
of director chairs a particular committee
and selects who will be on their committee
and they invite you to express your interest.
Please continue to tell us How We Rate.
Check out our activities calendar for special
upcoming events. Highlighting May’s
activity is the Festival of Golf on Saturday,
May 7; Mother’s Day Brunch, May 8; and
the Spring Wine Tasting on May 27. Enjoy
your club!

From the President
Great turnout for
the Talk & Taste last
month. Thanks to
all who came out to
hear our strategy and
vision for long-range
planning at Del Rio.
The board strongly feels that we need
to communicate with the membership
in an open and honest way. I hope you
have found this series of Talk & Taste
gatherings to be informative while giving
you, the audience, a chance to express
your thoughts and concerns. Certainly,
there are no easy answers when it comes
to prioritizing and funding large projects
at the club, but I hope you also gained an
understanding of the importance to prefund the depreciating capital assets that
continually need replacing or upgrading.
My thanks go out to our panel of experts
Clive Grimbleby, Steve Mort, Eric Tobias,
and John Bellizzi for helping explain this
somewhat esoteric subject matter.

out of school so early
and the weather
warming up, it’s

May is election month… well, at least at
Del Rio. Candidates Night will be held at
the club on May 11 at 5 p.m. So come out
and meet the future leaders. Be sure to
vote when you get your ballots in the mail.
Also, please join us for the annual meeting
and election May 17 beginning at 6 p.m.
As we used to say in the sixties (I know),
“be there or be square…no Levis or
capris please.”
Finally, I hope you have had a chance
to see our newly renovated Elderberry
Lounge. We should all be proud that we
have such a wonderful room to relax in
and enjoy fellowship with each other.
When you see our contractors, Phil
and Mike Mastagni, our architect, Don
Phillips, our interior designer, Chris Reed,
or our very own jack-of-all-trades, Stephen
Smith, be sure to let them know how much
you appreciate the fine work they did to
make this grille a reality.

We will also be hosting two Adult Tennis
Twilights and one Pickle Ball event.
Signups for the Ladies Monday League
are in the tennis building. Signups for the
Tennis Camps are enclosed in brochures
found in the business office or in the
tennis building.
Traditionally, I don’t recognize Jr. Tennis
accomplishments outside of
Del Rio, however…
Member Ryan Lewis is having another
outstanding High School season. To date,
he is undefeated including two tough
matches from other league stand outs.
Ryan beat Downey’s Nick Mendez 6-3, 7-6,
and outlasted freshman Coby McCraig in
a third set tie breaker. Additionally, Ryan
is having a great season on the USTA Jr.
Circuit. Go Ryan!

Greens aeration and sand top dressing was
completed the last week of April. This was our
major green aeration. We removed ¾ inch cores
from the putting surface followed by heavy sand
top dressing and seeding. The greens could take
up to three weeks to completely heal.
The driving range practice green was modified. The green has
fewer slopes than before making it more playable. A new bent grass

25 – 28. This event was founded on 1978 and
consists of the top four junior girls for each
state/country; in total 18 teams participate
each year. These golfers exemplify not only
outstanding skill and experience, but also true sportsmanship,
discipline, courtesy and strength of character. Being chosen to
represent your state/country to play in the Girls Junior America’s
Cup is one of the highest honors in girls’ junior golf.
chipping area was built next to the practice green. The green was
seeded and will take up to six to eight months for the plant to mature.
The driving range teaching tee was also rebuilt during construction of
the practice green. This tee will be closed until the end of May.
Aeration of the fairways is scheduled in May. With this aeration, we’re
only spiking the fairways. No cores are being removed. Once course
maintenance mows the fairway, the aeration won’t be noticeable.

From the Pro Shop
Hello Members,
April was a busy month,
the weather is beautiful,
and the golf course is
looking great. We had
three outside Monday
golf tournaments that had full fields. We had
our first horse race of the year and our first
Senior Men’s Home & Home. We qualified
three two-man teams for the NCGA Net
Four-Ball Championship.
As we roll into the busy time of the year,
please stay in touch with the calendar
and bulletin boards outside of the golf
shop. There you will find all tournament
information for upcoming events. All
men’s and ladies’ groups have put together
a great event schedule and you will enjoy
participating. If you have any questions

regarding tournaments please contact the
golf shop.
As the bermuda grass begins to come out
of dormancy, we would like you to start
driving the carts in the fairways and keep
the carts out of the rough as much as
possible. Due to irrigation, the greens will
begin to soften a little bit and ball marks
will become more prevalent. I remind you
to please continue repairing your ball marks.
Bill Johnson, along with the assistant
professional staff, have organized and
scheduled a variety of group instruction
clinics. Group instruction is very
informative and helpful, but also provides a
fun learning environment. Take advantage
of the many options and play better golf.
Our junior development program is going
very well; we meet on Thursdays from 4
p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to
2 p.m. Please register your junior golfer in
the golf shop.
Cindy has the golf shop looking very nice.

Senior Chip Shots
We are off and running!
The Seniors travelled
in style and comfort
on the bus to Contra
Costa on Apr. 6. We
had a total of 26 players
that enjoyed great
food, friendship, and a terrific golf course.
On the way home, there may have been
consumptions of adult beverages that only
enhanced the story telling!
In the First Flight, Del Rio first place
winners were Steve Mitchell and Mark
Burden. Second place went to Tim
Hodgson’s group with third place going to
the Duane Bartel and Don Phillips group.
In the Second Flight, Del Rio first place
winners were Greg Tesluk and Lee Ervin.
There were no second place Del Rio
Men's Group
| L E E ERVI N, SE N I O R M E N ’ S G O L F C A P TA I N
winners. Third place was won by Bernie
Fairfield and Mike Simi. By the way, Tim
Hodgson won “Closest to the Pin” at 2’4”. He
was also officially nicknamed “Tom” during
the tournament.

The newly initiated email blast system to
announce upcoming events and encourage
players to sign up appears to be having a
positive impact on participation. We will
also send out an email the week prior to an
event to all registered players to confirm
they will be playing. Getting an accurate
count is important, particularly for away
events when we must honor any restrictions
the host club may impose.
