Malaysian architects possess enthusiasm,
ingenuity and capacity to provide innovative
architectural solutions in response to
challenging sites, briefs and budgets. The
variety of creative responses and design
approaches stand as clear indicators of
Malaysia emerging as a design and creative
powerhouse.
To acknowledge the patronage of quality
architecture, the Malaysian Institute of
Architects organises the annual PAM Awards,
the most prestigious prize for the building
industry to exemplify the value of design in
the built environment.
Malaysian architects have also been invited
to participate at the 12th International
Architectural Exhibition La Bienalle De
Venezia in Venice, Italy scheduled from
26 August to 21 November 2010. This is the
iconic event in the calendar of architects
worldwide and provides a platform to brand
Malaysian architectural capabilities globally.

The insertion and addition of new architectural forms to an existing tropical house creating
a new setting that is sensitive to the existing house but at the same time expressing the
new structures. All composed to address the existing problems and to satisfy the needs for
the new design programme.

Bay o u Wat e r V i l l a g e
& The Loft
Johor, Malaysia
Bayou Water Village is a housing development consisting of bungalows, semi-detached and link houses.
The most striking feature in this development is the existence of a drain reserve that is taken advantage
of by making it into a water feature. The design of the houses are thus oriented towards the back of
the houses to take the views of the stream. All the water facing units have their “lanai” perching over
the water body. This gives the occupants of the houses a unique experience, akin to the old fishing
villages.
The Loft is a double storey courtyard house consisting of several pavilions surrounding a court. One of
the pavilions is a standalone building with its own washroom and bed space, hence the name, Loft. Sited
in a double gated precint, without any need for gates, the building is designed as pavillions arranged
in a U - shaped configuration to enjoy the outdoors with privacy.The court, surrounded by the pavilions
houses a swimming pool and water features.

H – House
Sarawak, Malaysia
The house is designed employing the tenets of
tropical architecture while portraying modern
aesthetics. The issues of privacy and the public
face are important considerations in the design
of this tropical house.
It has a semi open lobby which enables the
gradual transition into the living spaces from the
hot glare of the sun into the cool dim interior.
The tall volume of the entrance hall continues
through to the poolside terrace. At the first
floor a bridge connects and separates the two
bedroom ‘wings’ giving the users the option of
privacy or community.

Mandarin Oriental Sanya is a resort hotel
complex comprising a series of separate low rise
buildings informally laid out in a lush tropical
garden setting linked by open air pathways.
The lobby and reception, food and beverage
outlets, meeting facilities are designed as
pavilion structures located at close proximity
to the sea overlooking the main swimming and
recreational pools.
Hainan, China
The different types of guest rooms, ballroom,
spa, health and sports facilities are designed to
exploit the full potential of the topography for
optimal views of the sea and the creation of a
unique garden landscape.

SUFFOLK HOUSE
Penang, Malaysia
The Restoration of Suffolk House is an achievement discernable for the first time in the Malaysian
Culture Heritage Conservation context. Best Practice Standards were applied during the entire process
of restoration work which included, historical and materials research, archiving, use and quality control
of traditional materials and techniques, articulation of tangible and intangible values and sustainable
and appropriate use of the conserved structure.
The entire process and significance has been acknowledged in the winning of the Award of Distinction
in the highly prestigious UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards 2008.

DIMENSIONALLY GLUED TIMBER PRODUCTS
Glulam timber is a structurally engineered timber product manufactured by glueing dimensionally cut timber
together, to produce a large single span of timber which is not possible in solid sawn timber. In the laminating
process, the weakest point of one piece of timber is bonded to the higher strength of adjoining pieces, thus
forming a homogeneous structural component of great efficiency and strength.
APPLICATIONS:
Structural beams, girders columns and heavy trusses. It is often used where the structure
of a building is left exposed as an architectural feature.
