Introduction
We are very excited to launch Humanities 2015! Inside this booklet
are the brief outlines of all the activities on offer for this year’s
Humanities Days.
Enclosed, you will find information which gives you an outline of the
different trips on offer, what the 2 days will involve, the cost of the
trip and any specific trip requirements. This will be followed by a
morning of feedback and activities in school on the third day.
You now need to decide which trip you wish to go on. (Make sure
that you have selected at least five trips as we cannot guarantee
any choices).
Sign Up
 Sign up will take place week commencing May 11th 2015.
 All year groups will sign up during lessons on their designated
day.
 You will receive a paper confirmation slip on the sign up day of
the trip you have been allocated.
 On the EVENING of designated sign up day, you will be
expected to finalise payment for your trip using
PARENTPAY by midnight. This step is vital in securing your
place. Failure to do this COULD result in your place being
allocated to someone else.
 There will be a set number of places reserved for each year
group to enable a fairer sign up process
 Read all activity information carefully before selecting your
choices – you must be able to swim for HOAC, etc.
In order to proceed with the payment, you will need to have your
Parent pay Login details. Once logged in, you will see the allocated
trip and you will need to action payment.
PUPIL PREMIUM PUPILS ARE EXPECTED TO PAY A SMALL
AMOUNT TO SECURE THEIR PLACE ON ANY TRIP REQUIRING
PAYMENT, THE AMOUNT PAYABLE IS IN THE INFORMATION
SECTION OF EACH ACTIVITY.

Sand & the City - Bournemouth
This activity is OFF SITE
Do you want to feel the sand between your toes? Do you want to
feel the buzz and bustle of London? Yes? Then this is the activity
for you!
One of your fun packed days will be spent in Bournemouth
exploring the beach and town centre. Your second day will involve
a visit to the city of London. There will be a cruise down the River
Thames, flight on the London Eye and a walking tour seeing the
sights of Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and 10
Downing Street in the heart of the best city in the world!

Cost £30 for both days activities, Pupil Premium students will need to pay
£5 to secure their place


On the Bournemouth day; 8.00am to 4.00pm (leaving from school)

On the London day; 9.30am to 3.30pm (leaving from Hillingdon Tube

Aquatic Adventures!
This activity is OFF SITE
Get your cozzie on! You will have the chance to check out Coral
Reef Water Adventure Park on day one of this water adventure.
You will take on the thrill of the Snake River flumes, the rush of
the rapids, and the excitement of the fast waters.
Keeping with the water theme, the second day is a Duck Tour in a
land and water ride. Driving along the Embankment and straight
into the Thames! This is the London of picture postcards, film
sets, and history book, London in a nutshell! Plenty of sights to
see and in your own private vehicle!

Cost £36 for both days activities, Pupil Premium students will need to pay
£5 to secure their place

The Battlefields
Residential Trip
As part of Humanities Week activities we are offering students the
opportunity of visiting the battlefields of World War One and memorials and
museums in Belgium for a two day visit.
This is a valuable learning experience for any individual, in particular this trip
will benefit your daughter if she studies GCSE History as it will provide your
daughter with more of an understanding of what life was like during the war
and seeing reconstructed trenches will consolidate her learning from lessons.
The trip will include excursions to Passchendaele Memorial Museum, Menin
Gate including the Last Post Ceremony there, St. Georges Church,
Spanbroekmolen Crater, Tyne Cot British cemetery, Langemark German
cemetery, Croonaert Wood and Sanctuary Wood.

Bushcraft
Residential Trip
Residential school trips in The Woods are a great place to start your
adventures with The Bushcraft Company. Arriving at one of our safari-style
tented camps, students will become fully immersed in the wilderness, sleeping
in large bell tents and cooking over open fires.
From fire lighting and shelter-building to archery and roped tree-climbing,
our school trips cover a wide range of skills and learning outcomes, with
strong links to the national curriculum. All of the activities encourage team
building and give students the chance to develop new skills and interact with
their peers in a fun, creative environment.

Castles & Catapults
This activity is both ON & OFF SITE
A brand new adventure! On Day 1 it’s off to experience a full day out with
more than 1,100 years of jaw-dropping history, magic, myth and adventure
at Warwick Castle! Visiting the dungeons, towers, and of course the Warwick
Trebuchet, the largest working siege machine IN THE WORLD! The colossal
catapult is an authentic recreation of one of the biggest and most deadly
military machines of all time. After all that, you are going to be in school on
Day 2 to mastermind your own catapult, see who can make the best, most
effective, and maybe win a prize!!


Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
This activity is OFF SITE
On Day One, we are off to see the new stage production of Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in the heart of London’s
West End.

Day two, we are off to Cadburys World, our very own Chocolate Factory. No
Willy Wonka, but plenty of chocolate!
A history of the cocoa bean, tour of
the factory and then the amazing shop, chocolate, chocolate and guess
what…chocolate!


Karts & Kayaks
This activity is OFF SITE
Are you adventurous? Do you love a challenge?
This year we are going back to the Hillingdon Outdoor Activity
Centre for more thrills, There will be raft building, pedal karting,
high ropes and kayaking, but maybe you need more. The
Commando Challenge has been added! Can you get over various
obstacles, yes?! But all whilst being tied together!?


Step inside the BBC!
This activity is both ON & OFF SITE
Ever thought of yourself as a news anchor? Wanted to work in TV? Well this is the
trip for you! Step inside the exciting world of broadcasting! On day one you will
have the chance to peek behind the scenes of the dynamic live broadcasting hub and
hear what goes on at the beating heart of the BBC! You’ll get to see the state of the
art newsroom and you'll have the chance to try your hand at reading the news
yourself!
You will also get to hear about how BBC Radio Drama is made and you'll be able to
have a go at making your very own radio play complete with music and sound
effects!
On day two you will put everything from day one into practise, planning, filming
and editing your very own news show where you can be the anchor, director or
producer of your own news programme!


London Highlights
This activity is OFF SITE
On Day One it’s off to the dizzy height of the brand new Shard, taking
a lift up to the 72nd floor to look at London through a birds eyes view.
The Shard is 306 meters high, so you must have a head for heights!
Day Two you will travel to The Museum of London that overlooks the
Roman remains of the City wall near St Paul's Cathedral. The Museum
of London tells the story of the world's greatest city and its people
from prehistoric and Roman times through to Medieval, Tudor, 18th
century expansion through to the bustling multicultural London of
today!

Cost £26 for both days activities, Pupil Premium students will need to pay

Harry Potter World
This activity is OFF SITE
On day one, hop aboard a magic coach that will transport you to Hogwarts
at the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour in Hertfordshire. With all the
wizardry and magical insight into the lives of Harry, Hermione and Ron, you
could ever need. Visit Platform 13¾ and see the Hogwarts Express, new for
2015!
Day two you are off to Baker Street, where you can guarantee you will come
face to face with the world’s most famous faces, meet the Royal Family, live
out your musical fantasy, beat Beckham at his own game or test your IQ
against Einstein? At Madame Tussauds – where else!


Sand & Ice
This activity is OFF SITE
Another new trip!! On Day 1 it’s off to the seaside, Littlehampton – with its
award winning beaches, pleasure park, great town centre, and Best Kept
Secret on the South Coast – Littlehampton Harbour!
Day 2 into London for a fun filled day of ice skating and Ten-Pin Bowling!
Your day will start by experiencing all the thrills of skating on REAL ice. A
break for lunch, then 12 Lanes of full size Ten Pin Bowling. State of the art
scoring and extreme lighting means you are sure to have a great
time Bowling in London at Queens.


Stage Struck
This activity is OFF & ON SITE
Day one involves a visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum to take a
tour of the V&A's exciting theatre and performance collections,
including rock & pop posters, theatre and ballet costumes,
puppets, stage sets and more! This will give you inspiration for the
make-up and dance demonstration at school on the second day!
You will have a chance to try out the types of make-up used in
film and theatre and practise your dance moves with a
professional dance teacher.


Wicked!
This activity is OFF SITE
WARNING – Prepare to be scared!
Hop onto the tube on day one, and head for London’s famous West End to
catch the matinee of the world famous musical; Wicked. If that was not
enough to get you shivering you will be whisked off back to London for day
two. Here you will be jumping out of your skin at The London Dungeons.
Experience the boat ride to hell, escape from Jack the Ripper, The Great Fire
of London and Bloody Mary. You can plan your escape route on the Extremis
or Vengeance 5D laser rides!


Festival Food!
This activity is ON SITE
Music Festival Organising Committee
Every year there are hundreds of music festivals that go on across
the country for many different music genres. We have been
assigned the task of designing and making tapas style food and
merchandise for these types of festivals. Your team will have to
present your ideas to the festival board in order to help find a
winning team.
Activities will include: cooking a dish for a music festival stall
(savoury or sweet), creating a brand identity for your team,
making merchandise to support your bid.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
This activity is OFF & ON SITE
Day 1: London Science Museum: Visit the nanoscience department and the
Who am I? Exhibition which invites you to explore the science of who you are
through intriguing objects, provocative artworks and hands-on exhibits.
Collect DNA to catch a criminal, discover what your voice sounds like as a
member of the opposite sex or morph your face to see what you’ll look like as
you age.
Day 2: A school based day of crime scene investigation. Students will be
presented with a crime scene, and using numerous scientific techniques;
finger-printing, gel electrophoresis, chromatography and making footprint
casts to identify the criminal amongst you!


Swakeleys Mini Record Label
This activity is ON SITE
Have you ever wondered what is involved in working for a record
label? Have you ever wanted to write your own song and hear it
playing for others to dance to?
Well, here is your chance! On Day 1, you will be producing the
music and creating song lyrics and then on Day 2 you will be
creating the graphic design for your CD front cover and recording
the song!
By the end of Day 2 you will have your finished song on CD to
play to your family and friends! Why not have it played on the
school website?

Safari Snaps
This activity is OFF & ON SITE
Photographs capture a moment in time and can capture memories that last
a lifetime. This is your chance to learn how to take better photographs in a
great location and then learn how to edit them and play with them in the
digital darkroom.
You will spend one day at Woburn Safari park lounging with the lemurs,
messing around with the monkeys, gazing at the giraffes, you get the
picture? You will learn how to take a good photograph in different locations,
how to compose your photograph and how not to chop the heads off your
subject.
Then you will return to the digital darkroom to learn how to edit your
photographs and to produce some outstanding images of your day in the
wild.


WWII Manoeuvers
This activity is OFF SITE
Day 1 will be a day of paintballing at the Buckinghamshire paintball
centre where you will see why it’s the fastest growing sport in the UK!
This world class paintball centre offers a fantastic selection of movie-set
quality game zones with exciting props. You'll find military trucks,
WWII bunkers, bridges, double-decker buses, pyramids and more!
Day 2, off to Bletchley Park to explore some of the iconic WW2
Codebreaking Huts and Blocks. You will marvel at the astonishing
achievements of the Codebreakers whose work is said to have helped
shorten the war by two years.


Back due to popular demand! One of your fun packed days will
be spent in Brighton, exploring the pebble beach and town centre.
Your second day will involve a visit to the City of London. There
will be a cruise down the River Thames, flight on the London Eye
and a walking tour seeing the sights of Westminster Abbey, the
Houses of Parliament and 10 Downing Street, in the heart of the
best city in the world!

Enterprising Entrepreneurs!
This activity is IN SCHOOL
Do you see yourself as the next Sir Alan Sugar? Are you creative? Are
you inventive? Are you a risk taker?
If so, this is the trip for you! Come and put your skills to the test!
Over the two days you will be designing, creating and developing your
own product. This will include a trip to a shopping centre where you
will put your negotiating skills to the test. You will be given a budget to
buy the resources needed to create your masterpiece. Your goal will be
to convince Mrs Pryor to invest in your product. Could this be you? If

Bronte Sisters!
Residential Trip
They say the pen is mightier than the sword. If that is true, then the Brontë
sisters were the mightiest women in England. Join us on a scintillating
overnight trip, where we discover the gothic and ghostly world of the Brontë
sisters. After a cosy night in a local hostel, it’s onto Drayton Manor for day 2.
Day 1 will be spent in the charming town of Haworth – home of Charlotte,
Emily and Ann Brontë, arguably the most famous Gothic novelists of the
Victorian era. See where they wrote, chatted and devised all their literary
ideas! We will get the chance to potter around the museum, visit exhibitions
and participate in a workshop. After a night in a local hostel, you are all off
to Drayton Manor Theme Park for a day of thrills and squeals!
