Camp Perry Pistol Competition – Summer 2010 --- Not for the Faint of Heart!
Cliff White and Lance Nicholson, Jr. just went to Camp Perry for a hot, intense, and
thrilling week of world class competition pistol shooting.
Camp Perry is a National Guard training
facility located on the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio.
The Camp boasts the largest outdoor range in the
world and has hosted of the NRA sponsored
National Rifle Matches since 1907.
The National Matches, considered America's
"World Series of the Shooting Sports,” attracts
shooters from all over the world, for over five weeks
of grueling matches. There are five levels and 500600 shooters participate. Cliff shoots in the top
class called the High Master; levels below that are
Master, Expert, Sharpshooter and Marksmen.
This year, Lance, new to the Camp Perry
experience, joined Cliff, while they drove out to
Ohio, stayed in concrete bunkers in the blazing sun,
and shot among the best shooters in the world.
When I asked them what was the best part of
the week, they said “Shooting!” The worst part, they
said was, “The heat – in the 90‟s the whole time.”
They shot several matches over 3-4 days; the
aggregate of the scores was their total. Lance did
remarkably well, coming in third in his Marksmen
class.
He has just been moved up to the
Sharpshooter Class.
Cliff, who is a top shooter in Berkshire County
and is in the top level at Camp Perry, had trouble
with his gun- a shooter‟s nightmare. He still came in
90th out of 550 shooters in the President's One
Hundred match, and he got a medal and document
for it. He also received a bronze medal for the
National Individual Trophy Match.
It‟s competition at its best; frustrating and
rewarding, year after year. We‟re proud of you both!
The bunkers– don‟t
they look comfy?

sweltering out here!”

SEE YOUR TARGET SCORES BETTER !!
ATTACH A 20 x 50 SPOTTING SCOPE TO THE RANGE PORT
Once you begin to shoot better and land shots in the target black, you will need
the 20x power scope to see why your shots aren‟t landing in the 10-Ring!
This 20x scope is more powerful than the traditional 10x scope.
The scope has a drilled hole for a tripod, which is very important.
It screws together with the following gadgets, and attaches to the side of the port so you don‟t have to stoop.
The Burris Compact 20x50 Scope -- is glare-free, compact and lightweight.
The Adjustable Mini-Ball
-- screws into the Scope, to swivel the Scope around.
The ClamperPod
-- screws into the Mini-Ball and clamps to the Port.
Screw all three items together, and
you are set. Leave them assembled,
and it will take less than a minute to
set up your scope!
For more information, go to
www.clamperpod.com
The Mini-Ball adjusts the
position of the Scope. $14.95
The ClamperPod clamps
everything to the Port. $16.95
WEAR A LIFEJACKET – SAVE YOUR LIFE!!
Massachusetts boating regulations require that all persons
aboard canoes and kayaks September15th - May15th wear a Coast
Guard-approved Type I, II, or III PFD at all times while a boat is
underway.
This law applies to waterfowl hunters using canoes or kayaks.
The Mass. Environmental Police reminds boaters that children under 12
are required to wear PFDs in boats of all types throughout the year.
While most Type I, II, and III lifejackets will not prevent hypothermia,
they do give the victim one less thing to worry about: staying afloat.
The MEP points out that in Massachusetts and nationwide, most
boating fatalities start as a capsizing or fall overboard, and, historically,
80 percent of the victims are not wearing lifejackets.
Wearing a lifejacket gives victims and rescuers crucial
time to help themselves out of a potentially tragic episode.

aren’t having fun…

The leagues will wrap up the summer season with an awards dinner at the club on Saturday,
September 18th at 6pm sharp! Participants must complete the 10-week season in at least
one discipline to be eligible for awards.
FRIENDS OF NRA - As noted in the flyer enclosed in this newsletter, the Berkshire County
Chapter of the Friends of NRA will hold its annual fund-raising dinner at the ITAM Lodge
in Pittsfield on Saturday, September 25th, starting at 5pm. For those of you who may not
be familiar with the program, the Friends of NRA is a non-political arm of the NRA. No
money raised at this event will go to support any political candidate nor lobby for any
political action of any kind. 100% of the money goes back into the shooting sports in the
form of grants. Many of these grants go to sportsmen’s clubs to promote shooting
programs aimed heavily at youths and women, improve facilities, support law
enforcement training, and a variety of educational activities. 50% of the money raised
goes directly back to the state in which it was raised.
Our club alone has received over $25,000 in grants. The electric target carriers, the
central vacuum system, all of the equipment for the Junior rifle program including
firearms, air rifles, mats, hearing and eye protection, gloves, etc. and handguns for pistol
courses were all purchased with grants from this program.
Think about coming and supporting the event. There will be 25 guns to be won plus a
variety of NRA merchandise, artwork, jewelry, and a large number of donations of goods
and gift certificates from local merchants. All this plus a great meal and an evening with
fellow sportsmen and women from our area!
