40th Anniversary
Celebration Conclusion
Once again the Palm Desert Greens community has stepped up to
create a successful event. Our 40th Anniversary celebration was, by
all accounts, a huge success, thanks to the efforts and cooperation of
lots of people.
So this is a huge THANK YOU to the following:
Mike Bridges and the cleanup crew
Ted Berard and the COPS
Mario Lopez and his grounds crew
Bob Russell and the PDG security crew
Jimi Tidd, for all the posters, flyers, etc., and for being in the dunk
tank
Chef Mark and his crew for the food
Tim Fry and his crew for the food service
And the following committee chairs:
Ray Cole - entertainment
Greg Goodheart - Food and beverage
Carol Dobson - cleanup
Bev McGill - games
Don Risk - video
The realtors and various clubs that provided food, entertainment and
games during the Saturday festivities.
And a very special shout out to Bobby Grassi. Without his tireless
efforts and expertise we would not have had power and sound for
any of the activities.
The committee chairs were able to rely on many volunteers to make
it all come together. So thank you all!!!
I salute you all for a job well done.

Palm Desert Greens News Bulletin
We have received all of our “releases”
from the suppliers of materials, so there
are no “liens” against our Association.
Ooooooops! I was WRONG!!
Obviously, last month’s article was
not my last.
After five years of writing these articles,
one would think that I would remember
that they are written nearly one whole
month before they are distributed.
When I wrote that last month’s article
(November’s) was my last, I computed
that:
The election results would be “official”
on Saturday, December 1st.
The “new” Board would elect their Officers, at their organizational meeting, on
Monday, December 3rd.
Therefore:
The new President would write the article.
That was great except ---- the article has
to be submitted by December 7th, which
scarcely gives the new President time to
get acclimated.
So---- I was wrong by a month!!!!!
This is my last monthly article.
Well actually, that’s not true either; this
is not my last writing.
The “annual Report,” which I will present “orally” immediately after the election results are announced, will be published in the January edition.
But I promise --- that will be my last!!!!
There are still a few “bugs” to work out
of the system however.
We seem to be experiencing some sporadic “sprinkler head” malfunctions due
to a “voltage” drop in some areas. This
has been identified as a “manufacturer”
defect and is being tracked down to determine the cause and form a solution
for its repair (yes --- this is a warranty
issue – no cost to the Association).
Another “bug” being worked on is the
direction and nozzle pattern/flow of
some of our “heads” adjacent to houses
and streets.
As we become aware of these issues,
our Golf Course Superintendent, Mario
Lopez, will send his crew out to make
adjustments.
PLEASE, if a sprinkler head is malfunctioning, submit a written “Homeowner Comment Form” to the Association Office. We have had a number
of occasions where a resident has had an
issue with the new system and has complained to neighbors and friends, but has
NOT contacted anyone from the Association Office.
Again, please help us help you – contact
the HOA with any “concern” you may
have!!!

The Irrigation Project expenditure (Reserves) was budgeted at:
$1,500,000.00
The Irrigation Project “bid” was awarded to O&J Landscape Construction at:
$1,240,139.56
The actual Irrigation Construction costs
(as bid) amounted to:
$1,232,965.10
The Irrigation Project, as bid, came
in (almost) on-time and under budget.
The Association also incurred additional
expenses, which were deemed essential
for the new system to operate as “efficiently” and “effectively” as possible
or were deemed to be fiscally prudent
(would have to do the work sooner or
later and doing so later would incur
greater costs).
The costs for the following “addendums” were also incurred:
$19,000 on GPS “As-built” maps
$13,500 on CVWD identifying tags
$14,922.80 for the dismantling of the
old system
$6,600 for the installation of a new
“Z-pipe”
$3,287 for the installation of a new “filter line.”
$989 for the re-routing of a 4” water
main from the golf course to the Maintenance Bldg.
$1,025 for the connection of the new
system to the Frank Sinatra perimeter
The “addendums” costs were:
$59,324
The expenditure for the project and addendums came to:
$1,288,288.98
Including the architectural fees of
$41,300 ($3,500 of which was charged
to last fiscal year), the entire expenditure for the project, including addendums and design totaled:
$1,325,589.98
The total amount of Reserve Funds

40th Anniversary:
What a great weekend!
Mr. Patrick Evans was a most gracious
and entertaining “host” for the festivities.
“Heat-wave” put on a show that will not
only be long remembered for its entertainment, but gives renewed hope for
the future of our country (what a great
group of talented and polite young people).
Kudos to the “Anniversary Committee”
whose numerous members toiled and
sweated the details to put on “one-greatshow!”
I know I am going to forget to recognize
some of the people who helped organize
this event, but for the sake of at least
recognizing most of those who dedicated so much of their time so that the rest
of us could enjoy, THANKS go to:
Chairman Dennis Hanks, Sara McCallum (Tennis Club), Liz Dixon, Mal
Sinclair (Finance), Ray Cole (Long
Range), Carol Dobson (Maintenance),
Greg Goodheart (F&B), Robert Grassi (Security & Audio), Erma Hanks
(New Dimensions), Beverly McGill
(Clubhouse), Lynda Raible (Golf),
Marjorie Teaney (Landscape), Jerry
Thomas (ARC), Roberta Reynolds
(GM), Sara Fenimore (Asst. GM),
Jimi Tidd (Graphics), Tim Fry (F&B
Mgr.), and Chef Mark Scher.
There were scores of volunteers who
donated their time and efforts as well.
From the COPS who directed traffic,
to the arcade workers, to the “dunktank” swimmers, to the clean-up people, to the people who set up the tables,
chairs and stage curtains, to the “golf
chip and putt-putt” workers: They are
all most deserving of individual recognition. However, I could not begin to list
them all. Know this – you are all very
much appreciated!!!!
Until next we meet and communicate,
Be well,
Ken

Welcome back! Wasn’t that a wonderful 40-Year Anniversary celebration?
The Ad Hoc Committee provided an
entire weekend of entertainment, in
spite of the cooler temperatures. Thank
you all for your hard work. There was
so much going on. Accolades continue
pouring in. Congratulations to Dennis
Hanks, and his Ad Hoc Committee all
for making this event so memorable.
Speaking of the holidays, I want to
thank those of you who have already
sent in checks for the Employee Holiday Fund. In some associations, holiday gifts are included in the monthly
assessments. Ours depend upon the
generosity of our residents. Please remember how hard these employees
work to make you proud that you are

Chef Mark and Tim have prepared a
new menu, including revisions of some
of your favorites as well as adding new,
lighter items. They have played upon
the 40-year Anniversary theme, incorporating early pictures of PDG. They
will change the theme and some of the
offerings as they work through the year,
but I think you will find the selections
tempting, and the new look nostalgic.

First and foremost, I want to wish all of you, Happy
Holidays!
It seems that I spend more time with the people of
Palm Desert Greens than I do with my own family and neighbors. In my
position here, I have the responsibility to protect you and provide a safe
environment for you to enjoy your lives here in this great community. I
also get the opportunity to be a confidant for those who need one, and a
problem solver for those who do not have nearby family or friends. All in
all, I can say that I have a substantial involvement with the people of PDG.

This past month I have seen more criminal activity in here than I have in
several months. Not all of it was serious in nature, unless you were one of
the victims. In some cases the criminal received some help from the victim. Keys were left in the vehicles that were taken. Golf Clubs were left
out in plain sight while the victim was gone for several days. Doors and/or
windows were left unsecured, both in houses and cars.
I take these crimes seriously and take whatever steps I can take to catch
the culprit and recover the stolen property. You all can make my job a lot
easier by making it more difficult for the criminal to take your things.
You can still enjoy the comfort of living in one of the safest communities
in the Valley. It is not my wish to make you afraid that someone is out
there waiting to take your things. My wish is that you stay aware that there
are people out there that will take advantage of you if you give them the
chance.
One thing I would like to caution you about, is leaving mail in your mailbox overnight. It is better and safer to put your outgoing mail in your box
in the morning. There are people that are wandering around the streets at
night, and “Lead them not into temptation!”
It might also be a good idea to take your keys out of your golf carts when
they are not being used. It may be enough of a deterrent to ward off any
would-be thieves. I say this because when we had those golf carts taken,
other carts were searched for what I believe to be keys for the cart. The one
cart that was recovered, had the ignition switch in the “on” position, but
the key was not in it. The other had the keys left in the ignition.
With the increased traffic and traffic problems, with all the street work that
is diverting the regular flow of vehicles, it is important to be careful, and
careful of the actions of others.
Speed has always been a major concern for all of you, as well as Security.
The results of a speeding vehicle can be traumatic if someone is injured
because of the diminished reaction time of the driver. In the 14 years since
I started here, there have been several accidents resulting in property damage. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no fatal accidents in
PDG, until recently. A small dog, that got out of its owner’s yard, through
no fault of their own, was struck and killed by what was believed to be a
speeding vehicle. As you all know, this is similar to losing a child of your
own.
During this Holiday Season, let’s keep it the Season to be Jolly. Stay safe
by watching out for yourself and others.

New Dimensions
Palm Desert Greens News Bulletin
Halloween
This New Dimensions team of officers and committee chairpersons could easily run the State Fair. The October 27 Halloween Dinner-Dance was terrific
with a big crowd! Sugar Grassi directed the installation of haunting creatures
of the night staring at you from everywhere in the ballroom. There were huge
spiders hanging on the walls, in webs large enough to trap the biggest partier. The witches’ hats and other table decorations served a second purpose as
accessories in a pumpkin-decorating contest. The cemetery salad, witches
beef stew in a bread bowl and jack-o-lantern cake were soooo yummy and the
presentation and service were excellent. (Tim Fry, Chef Mark and the restaurant staff do a great job.) Attendees partied in incredible costumes or regular
people clothes and it was exciting and fun for everyone.
The costume contestants promenaded around the dance floor in such a large
crowded circle that you had to be very attentive to distinguish each participant. The most amazing costume contest winners were Jim and Linda Soares,
Michael Gray, Ken and Carol Dobson, Mark Carlson, and Shannon Preuss.
Exceptional vocal and instrumental dance music was provided by Jimmy
Street and the Two Ghouls. Entertainment Chairman, Lela Buffington, taught
a floor full of eager dancers the Monster Mash, with moves such as the scissors, the mummy walk, monster walk, dummy move, in and out, driving the
car, werewolf, and the breaking of chains and you just had to see it to believe
it! The popular 50/50 drawing awarded 6 ticket holders $50 prizes.
The November 13 General Meeting was a special tribute to our Veterans. Viet
Nam War Veteran and Author, Ted Pannell spoke on his service experiences. His book, “Vietnam Stories - Dreams to Nightmares,” was available for
purchase and if you didn’t get a copy, call Ted for one. President, Beverly
McGill, recognized each Veteran in attendance with gratitude for their service
and then attendees joined together singing patriotic songs. Talented concert
violinist, Eric Frankson, entertained the group. He had previously impressed
us when he played for New Dimensions with the John Stanley King Band. If
you are not attending the monthly General Meetings, you are missing out on
information about the Club’s activities and accomplishments, followed by excellent free entertainment and an enticing assortment of refreshments. Norm
and Paula Koster made the coffee and managed the refreshments and volunteers supplied the treats.
We will appreciate everyone who enters the Golf Cart Parade on December
8. Entrants should line up in the Clubhouse Parking lot at 12:00 AM and the
Parade will begin at 1:30. It gets longer and more elaborate every year. Ice
cream and cookies will be served after the parade, in the Clubhouse dining
room. Please bring toys for the Salvation Army Toy Drive.
The 2012 Festival of Lights and the Golf Cart Parade will be called, “Let’s
have a Kandy Kane Christmas”. Pick up entry forms in the Administration
office. The Festival of Lights contest winners will be announced at the General Meeting on December 11.
Make your plans to celebrate New Years’ Eve at the “Snowflake Ball”. This
is our most elegant event of the year and a memorable way to usher in the
New Year. You will dine on Lake Superior White Fish or Filet Mignon Oscar
and dance to music played by Disc Jockey, Michael Farber, of Music Media.
Erma Hanks and Carol Dobson will sell tickets on the Clubhouse patio on
December 1 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. This event quickly sells out.
Remember that attendees, who wish to sit together at any event, must buy all
of the tickets at the same time or they will be seated with other party people
at the table they are assigned. For information on the many PDGCC events,
check the new web site, channel 98, and the kiosks by the Clubhouse.

Thank you all so much for your generous contributions. In
view of all of the natural disasters that our country has experienced over the past few weeks, I thought it would be a good
idea to make a donation to the Palm Desert Greens Emergency Response Team. The Clubhouse Committee agreed so we
donated $1500.00.
I want to thank Jimi Tidd for making the beautiful Veteran’s
Day poster that we placed in front of the Lydia Baldwin Memorial Fountain in front of the Clubhouse. I was sorry that we
didn’t get to place the flags down the Parkway, but Southern
California Edison Company was working on the road.
The 40th Anniversary was a great event and I would like to
thank Don Risk for the nice piece he did on the Flag Fund.
What an undertaking that must have been getting all the information together for all of the clubs and organizations we have
here in PDG. I look forward to seeing the film again.
If you would like to make a donation in memory of a friend or
loved one, make a check payable to the PDG Flag Fund and
mail it to me at 38010 Devils Canyon Dr. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call me at 760-341-9848.

Artist of the Month
Don Senter
Snow Bird Don Senter, Summers On Camano Island, in Washington
state.
Don began painting three years ago, following a long career in the private practice of law. He says he continues to switch brain lobes. Don sees humor in much of life and seeks to record it on canvas. He
uses his pen and paintbrush to warp time, space and color to change
reality to his liking.
The Palm Desert Greens Art Club is proud of the fact that it is as old as
the Palm Desert Greens community itself. Art Club President, Nancy
Whelan, points out that her mother was a member 40 years ago, when
it all began.
Don was asked by Art Club members to make his offering, as Artist of
the Month for December, a memorial to PDG’s 40th birthday.
His cartoon - painting, titled “1972 - the early settlers reach PDG” is that
Memorial.
Don zanily depicts a ‘49er prospector’s dinner being interrupted by flying golf balls as the first settlers of Palm Desert Greens move in.
To enjoy all the humor in the painting it must be viewed close-up.
Don’s work will be displayed in the Clubhouse throughout the month of
December .

This is Harry’s input to your reporter, to include in this December Report for the Roger Gould
PDG Bulletin. He makes the request a polite suggestion for your benefit. “E-mail

twice per month. I have had people tell me that they are not getting the e-mail.
Most will find out that it went to their SPAM folder and they do not check there.
Others may find that they have changed their email address and have not notified

On another administration note, Membership Chairman Al Bayly reminds all
Members to be aware that renewing your Membership after Nov.30 will cost
you $60, to include the assessed $10 for late payment. Continuing the subject
of Dues, the SCGA has increased their bill for each SCGA Member by $3 for the
upcoming year. Be assured that our Club Officers have focused on the issues
of our income vs our expenses for the last several months. If you attended the
November 20 General Meeting for all Club Members, you heard Treasurer John
Fox address that subject. Like everything else these last several months, costs
keep going up without any appreciable increase in income. Changes may well be
required in both areas.
Finally on Administration, Dick MacDonald has succeeded Bud Dohm as PM
Sweeps Chairman. Thank You Bud, for stepping in; and Welcome Aboard, Dick.
There are photos of all your Officers on the outside West wall of the Golf Shop,
to help us all to recognize them and their positions.
Let’s talk about Golf and other fun times together. Our Welcome Back, and/or
Season Kickoff, was a BBQ good time event, shared among about half of our 400
plus Membership on November 7th. Social Chairman (and Master Chef) Alex
Smutkoff masterminded the event, including the good times, good food, good
weather - the whole enchilada (whoops - the whole bratwurst) ! Other Member
Cooks were Jim Tatum, Jim Olson, Gary Druckery, and Immediate Past President
Dick Dill. Current President Ken Gordon piped in some C&W music to liven the
festivity; Membership Chairman Al Bayly took up a collection (of dues); and a
whole crew of Members, including Golf Liaison Member at Large Doug Hodson
and Vice President John Coyle, helped with the clean-up.
And as for Golf, the annual Turkey Shoot is behind us; and the Ham Shoot comes
up on December 12th, preceded by the first Tournament of the year, the Eclectic,
on December 8 and 9. See the Mens Golf Club website for all the details. We
are most fortunate to have Ken Miracle as our Tournament Chairman for another
year!
We had a most enjoyable General Membership Meeting last month with Doug
Sullivan as our Guest Speaker/Entertainer from the SCGA. Vice President John
Coyle has this to add about the SCGA’s Foundation: “As we count our blessings
in this holiday season, I encourage your support of the Southern California Golf
Association Foundation and all the good work it does to promote the education
and character of deserving youth. Formed in 1983 with seed funding from the

Don Risk, President of the Putting Club, stepped up to the microphone and
introduced Ted Pannell to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and with that, the
Welcome Back dinner was underway. Since it was near Veteran’s Day, and
Election month, the theme was the USA. Each table centerpiece flew the
American flag along with decorating colors of red, white and blue, as well;
members and guest were also decked out in the nation’s colors.

After tears were wiped away, Don Risk put the mood on the lighter side
with his fun-filled video of last year’s Putting Club activities, an array
of still-photos by Jerry Miracle and video of members participating in
dinners, parties, and on the putting green. This brought out-right laughter
to the colorful affair. Cheers and applause went up as the video showed
members making holes-in-one or missing by inches. A wonderful sense of
humor was displayed along with a showing of social friendships for which
the Putting Club is known.
Bonded and Insured
Club officers were also introduced; VP, Fran Burgess – Secretary, Sue Davis – Treasurers, Belva Meanor and Doreen Heffron. Then came dinner:
Mark’s short ribs were nothing short of amazing, as well; Tim’s origination
and attention to detail made it a splendid experience.
Did you see Gus and his girl friend in the last newsletter? They too enjoy
the occasion. Now it was prize time: Gayle Risk and Sylvia Pannell passed
door prize to the winners. Ten prizes were given away, to include a grand
prize of a unique belly-putter.
Don Sender sold 50/50 tickets then put together five cash prizes of $25
that went to the winners. The twelve centerpieces were also given away, so
several members went home happy.
In closing, Don Risk reminded everyone that our first day of play is
Wednesday, November 14th and will run thru April 10th, 2013. There is
still time to join this exquisite club. Membership is only $10 per player for
the season. There is a weekly fee of 0.75 cents, which you can get back
0.25 cents for each hole-in-one. You need not be a golfer. All you need is
a putter and ball.
If you don’t come as a couple or have a partner, no problem, we will find
you one.
Just remember to wear a red top and white pants or shorts and soft-soled
shoes (Please, no high heels).
So there you have it; one of the best, fun clubs in PDG. We’ll be looking
for you.

2013 Charity Golf
Tournament
Plans are quickly getting underway for the charity golf tournament to be held
on Sunday, March 17, 2013. What better way to spend St. Patrick’s Day than
by providing a “Pot Of Gold” for the Desert Cancer Foundation which provides cancer treatment and care for those that are under-insured or have no
insurance at all.
Our PDG Realtors have started the ball rolling with their generous donations.
Special thanks to the LaDonna Keaton team, George and Liz Higgins of
Country Club Realtors, Lola Breeze, broker, Ron Nielson and Jackie Wood of
The Greens Real Estate and Suzie Napoli of PDG Realty.
New Dimensions has again come through, and will provide a continental
breakfast for the golfers. What would PDG do without their support through
the year?!
As mentioned in previous articles, we have an exciting project underway to
help raise funds for our designated charity. It is hoped that as many donors as
possible will be a part of our “Commemorative Block Campaign”. This is a
great way to honor loved one’ and friends, celebrate a special occasion or create a memory. The blocks/bricks will be available for a donation of $150.00
and may be inscribed with up to 16 characters. The blocks will be set into the
ground at the entry to the 1st tee (replacing the blocks that are there now). An
unveiling and dedication of the area will be held the day of the tournament.
Applications and questions regarding purchase of the blocks may be obtained
from the tournament chairmen. The deadline for applications is March 1st,
2013.
Our 1st raffle prize was received from Debbie LeBlanc, so we hope that many
more donations will follow. Popular items include gift cards/certificates, golf
get-a ways, golf bags/clubs to name a few. Big ticket items are also welcome-how about a TV, laptop or a $100 bill?!
Again, please contact any of the chairmen if you are willing to donate or solicit donations.
Unfortunately, the big “C” affects so many from all walks of life. It would
probably be safe to say that almost every resident in PDG has been touched in
one way or another by this terrible disease. Needless to say, the financial burden for treatment can be overwhelming and devastating which is why we feel
that the Desert Cancer Foundation is such a worthwhile entity. Their collaboration with the local medical community allows them to extend and enhance
the value of every donation received. An overall donation of $30,000 yields
approximately $180,000 in real cancer care. Just think of what we can do as a
community to provide treatment for those that have no resources.
Remember the date, March 17th,,,,, 2013. Proudly wear your knickers (green
we hope!) and enjoy a fun filled day which will ultimately help so many. Golf
is limited to 156 players and continental breakfast and lunch (prepared by our
great Chef Mark) is included in the $55.00 entry fee. Again, donations will be
gratefully accepted so please contact any of the chairpersons.

Pickleball Club
The new Pickleball Courts are done; new nets have been put up and play has
begun on these new courts. We had over twenty people playing at one time
and it kept everyone active all the time.
What a great turnout we had for the PDG 40th Anniversary celebration. Our
booth was buzzing with activity. Many people stopped by to see what this
Pickleball game was all about. I hope we convinced some of you to come
play with us. Thanks to all of our members who helped make this such a huge
success; either by working the booth or making baked good items.
Bev Parks, our Social Play Coordinator is busy scheduling our play dates with
other clubs and we should have dates for everyone in the next newsletter.
We had a Welcome Back Party at the courts on Nov. 15th and everyone enjoyed the cookies and seeing old friends.
December 12th is our Potluck Christmas Party at the Recreation Center. After
the party plan on joining the Parade around the park to see the Christmas
Lights. Members can attend for free and guest can attend for $5.00.
The Pickleball Club is having a fund-raiser February 17th at the Clubhouse.
A musical night featuring Ron Schmeck as your host. The show is called Big
Star Night and there will be around 25 acts, with about 35 people who have
worked with Ron doing many shows in the past. Featuring Tina Turner, Frank
Sinatra, Dolly Parton, Elvis, Anne Murray and many more. Come enjoy a
night of entertainment. Cost will be $10.00 per person. Tickets will go on sale
Saturday, January 5th and 12th on the patio by the Clubhouse at 9:00 a.m.
New appointments for the Club: Bev Parks Social Play Coordinator, Deb Owens for Rules Interpretation, and Norma Smith as Parliamentarian.
Thanks to Cindy Youell who was the Parliamentarian for the Pickleball Club.
Cindy had to resign her position due to family matters and will be greatly
missed. Best of luck to you and your family.
Big thank you also to Barbra deBoer who held the Treasurer/Membership

you Barb for a job well done.

Women’s Golf Club
Once again, welcome back to our returning members and to our new members.
Speaking of new members, we have been joined by three new golfers and three
new Associate Members since the November bulletin was published. Please welcome members: Laraine Coon, Marilyn Griffin, and Linda Helvig. And, don’t
forget to say “hello” to the following new Associate Members: Betty Dawson,
Betty Hyde, Joanne Kohuch, and Marion Olsen.
This year, our membership book underwent a total revamping. It is easier to read,
contains more information, and cost less to publish. Thank you Barbara Ramirez
and Eileen “Farmer” Holderbaum.
It is with deep regret that we will be saying goodbye to one of our Canadian members who graciously volunteered to be our Tournament Co-Chair last year and
this year. Cindy Youell will be leaving the group and will be sorely missed. On
behalf of everyone in the PDG Women’s Golf Club, we send our love with her.
One of the many important things discussed at the Welcome Back Brunch was the
need to try to speed up the pace of play this year. In an attempt to get the 12:30
players out at 12:30, Bob Breidenbach will be “sounding his whistle” at 12:20.
When this whistle sounds, all morning players must leave the golf course after
completing the hole being played. This means that players may not play an extra
hole, even if that hole is a player’s 18th hole. For scoring purposes, equitable
stroke play rules will be followed.
Also, we are asked to please play ready golf. This means playing ready golf at the
tee box AND through the hole to and including putting on the green. And, please
remember to record the scores on the next tee box, not by the green just finished.
We will all benefit from these actions.

Shuffleboard Club
Attention all PDG Residents and Renters and Guests! The Shuffleboard
Club will be having another of its uniquely fun Dinner Dances next month!
Here’s how Club President Bill Rindone describes it:
one to several; so sometimes Members, who have attended to substitute,
do not have the opportunity to participate. On other Fridays not enough
substitutes show up; and the Teams who are short-handed (footed?) must
have a team member “walk” from end to end. Substitutes can, and often
do, swing the game one way or the other. The present tournament, which
began November 30, continued on Fridays through the Holiday season.
A new tournament will start in January; so put your name on the sign-up
sheet on the Shuffleboard Team Play Bulletin Board to participate as a
regular player (preferred) or a substitute.
“On January 26th the PDG Shuffleboard Club will present an evening of
dinner and dancing. Titled ‘A String of Pearls’ it will be a tribute to the
Big Bands of the 1940’s - featuring the Ted Herman Orchestra, along with
a vocalist. Recent performances include the Indio Performing Arts Center
this past spring, a stop at the Playhouse Bowl, where they entertained be- Happy New Year !
fore an estimated 2,000, plus other major venues. Chef Mark has promised a dinner equal to the evening - your choice of either Salmon or Prime Roger Gould
Rib with matching sides, plus a special salad. Tickets will go on sale this
month. We expect this to be a sell out; so be sure to watch Channel 98 for
sale dates, so you can grab yours at the bargain price of $27 before they’re
gone!”
The Coachella Valley Shuffleboard League Competition among the several
Clubs lasts only a few months; with Club Competitions already underway
and one Major Tournament, the Singles matches, underway as you read
this. Co-Captain Dean DeLap, “Co-” with Linda Goodman, has this to

“Excitement prevails as the 2012-2013 Shuffleboard season is underway!”
Hi-Ten competition began November 15, as the PDG Team was host to
friends from Desert Crest, located in Desert Hot Springs. Results will be
reported in next months paper. Our team has a bye on November 29th,
(also, no play on Thanksgiving). This year we will enjoy home board advantage on six occasions, traveling to our opponents five times. The District V Singles Tournament will be held December 4th to December 7th;
and we expect to have 10 or more PDG players participate, as any Member
of our Club can register. They do not have to play on Desert Shufflers or
Hi-Ten to enjoy this competition. Details and signup sheets are on the
shuffleboard bulletin board.
Residents of PDGCC who have physical disabilities are invited to play
Shuffleboard at a special time – Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This
is a new program, introduced last spring, and re-instated on November
14th. Players who like Shuffleboard may also join the Club entitling them
to the social activities enjoyed by nearly 80 members to date. For inquiries
or additional information, please call Gloria or Dean 760-636-1416. This
notice is also on Channel 98.
There’s more to Shuffleboard than shuffling! While any PDG Resident,
Renter, or guest may play during the Open Play times shown on the bulletin boards, both outside and inside the building, why not come up with
a mere $15 to become a Member - with all these opportunities and two
“free” meals every year? Speaking of which, we enjoyed a tremendous
Welcome Back Breakfast in early November. Members Sue Soto and Sandra Roessler made certain we had plenty of fruit and breakfast sandwiches
and salads and danish and drinks and a great get-together of Members old
and new. Thank you ladies, and you too Carol McKinniss for the fall decorations motif. A great Party !
And another benefit to being a Member . . . Our internal Friday Team Play
contests, for Members only, are planned to be competitive with balanced
teams, giving every team an equal chance to win. Team Members are
there to play every week if at all possible. Substitutes are often needed
to “shuffle” for absent Members. The number of subs needed varies from

We are looking forward to the 40th Anniversary Party when we will celebrate
the past, present and future of Palm Desert Greens. The Committee has worked
tirelessly to provide a weekend full of fun and entertainment. Be sure to join in.
I was recently saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Amoroso. He served
for many years on the Board of Directors, several as its President. His long-term
vision for this community provided some of the amenities we still enjoy, such as
our bulk services. He was a trusted comrade and friend, and will be missed.
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT:
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: (Called by Vice President Hanks)
The Golf Course over seeding procedure will differ a little this year. Under normal circumstances, they would be dethatching the grass. In order to diminish
abrasion to the turf freshly turned during the irrigation installation, and to protect
the newly installed sprinkler heads until they are well seated, Mario is preparing
the ground by applying a Bermuda grass retardant. On October 4, they will apply
a pre-emergent herbicide for controlling poa annua.
ARC: Chair Jerry Thomas reported that the Committee is once again meeting on
a weekly basis, after meeting every-other week during the summer.
Mario’s crew added sand to #11, 12 and 14 bunkers.
All exterior painting of homes, trim, etc. must be pre-approved by the ARC. Applications may be picked up in the Association Office.
Weed and tree trimming violations are being forwarded to homeowners. Please
pull the weeds, even after spraying, trim palm trees that may not have been
trimmed, and trim trees/shrubs that overhang neighboring and Association walls.
During the September 9th wind storm, eight (8) trees were downed on the Golf
Course, and two (2) others were badly leaning.
Clubhouse/Recreation Committee: No report.
Water application has been reduced to 45% now, and will go as low as 25-30%. Finance Committee: Treasurer Sinclair reported in Chair Jim Lynch’s absence.
In order to help heal the turf disturbed during irrigation construction, the water
will not be completely shut off.

The first two (2) month’s expenditures for the Golf Course indicated electric costs
exceeded the budget. This was due to testing the irrigation system. CVWD’s
non-potable water supply was down for ten (10) days, so water costs were less
than budgeted. You may have noticed some of our plants either looked stressed,

The Board received notice that two (2) golf carts were stolen (one recovered),

While walking your pets throughout the Community, please pick up after them.
The City of Palm Desert has cited Palm Desert Greens for debris that has been

underground power lines. To that cause, SCE has identified Palm Desert Greens
as a priority for replacement lines, funding two more phases. Areas involved
include much of the southwesterly part of the community.
The two-phased work is estimated to begin October 29, 2012. Extra crews will
be working to expedite completion by year-end 2012. SCE will contact residents in the areas affected via door hangers. To minimize telephone calls to the
Association Office, we will provide important notices regarding the SCE project
on Channel 98 and the Web Site.
There is still time to participate in the Set to Save Energy Survey sponsored by
the City of Palm Desert. The program will continue through December, or, until
funds are exhausted for the energy savings program. (Flyers are available at the
back table.)
Your PDG Restaurant staff is gearing up to serve over 250 Thanksgiving dinners
this year. Serving begins at 11:30 am and the last seating is at 3:00 pm. Tickets
will be available in the Association Office on Monday, October 29; $23.95 for
adults and $11.95 for children under 12.

The Committee met on October 18, 2012 to review the September financial
statements.
Food & Beverage: Chair Greg Goodheart reported the Committee met on October 8, 2012.
The food and beverage committee addressed some general concerns. We believe our restaurant and lounge are doing a terrific job. We want to insure that
we don’t become complacent. We discussed the attentiveness of our servers,
their uniforms being pressed and crisp, timely delivery of guest checks and the
wearing of name tags. Prior to reopening, our restaurant supplier, SYSCO,
is offering our service staff a refresher course on good service and improving
customer satisfaction.
We discussed patron dress code which we leave to Manager Fry’s discretion
to enforce. If you have any intentions of bringing guests to the Clubhouse,
Restaurant or Lounge, please inform them beforehand of proper attire. Neither
management nor staff desires to embarrass or offend anyone. If there are any
questions simply call Tim ahead of time. He’ll be happy to keep you aware.
The wine list is being overhauled, new wines are being researched. The Evaro
Brothers are returning on Wednesday nights. Chef Scher has produced a new
menu with interesting and mouthwatering additions as well as our comfortable
regular cuisine.
We’re looking forward to some great changes to our Sunday Brunch offerings such as Eggs Benedict and Dollar Pancakes, made-to-order at our already
sumptuous omelet buffet. Mark is also going to feature a change in the Monday
night fare alternating Mexican Fiesta a-la-carte one week with Italian Buffet the
following. Remember that “buffet” means all you can eat! Mark has included
some “lighter” food choices as well.

Dennis Hanks reported there are four (4) hours of entertainment planned on the
outdoor stage, beginning at 11:00 am, in addition to all the other happenings
going on all day long.
Saturday (November 10) will start off with the introduction of the guest host
and emcee for most of the day, Patrick Evans, weatherman for our local Channel 2 news station, and a very good friend of Palm Desert Greens.
T
F
A
Patrick will introduce former Presidents of the Board, former General Managers, residents who have lived here the longest, and our oldest living residents.
A golf fashion show co-coordinated by Denise Baca, featuring the latest men’s
and women’s golf attire from our Golf Shop, and modeled by local residents
will kick-off the Stage performances, followed by songs from the 70’s throughout the day, performed by a very talented group of PDG singers. The highlight
of the stage presentation is a one hour performance beginning at 1:00 pm,
entitled “Broadway-Sing-Along”. This is a highly professional show directed
by Jim Borax; featuring Palmer Davis, former Radio City Rockettes star; Peter
Romero, a star of the New York City state; and Melissa Batalles, winner of the
McCallum Theater Open Call. This is a show you do not want to miss.
R
D
Finally, the stage performances will wind up with our first “PDG Dog Show”.
There are three (3) classes of dogs, small, medium, and large, and the winner of
each category will move on to the final, where the “Best in Show” will be declared. The judges will be the audience, and applause will decide the winners.
There will be plenty of seating provided at the stage, so no need to bring your
own chairs.
Come out and enjoy the day’s Carnival atmosphere and don’t miss any of the
day’s activities.
