Spring
in the
Mountains
S
pringtime in the mountains is truly magical! With the first blush of spring, our
mountains fill with the sound of rushing waters and singing birds. Along our
famed trails, hikers and bikers make their way amidst dazzling white and pink
blossoms of redbuds, dogwood and mountain laurel.
The cool nights still call for cozy flannels and
a blaze in the fireplace. Yet, the warm sunny
days just beg for adventure.
It’s Time to Play!
Explore!
Spring also welcomes in a new season of festivals and celebrations as we shake off
our winter slumber and come out to play! Athletes in teams of three compete in the
prestigious Blue Ridge Mountain Adventure Race in April, now in its 17th year. On
April 26, you can sample treats from a wide variety of local restaurants at Taste of
Blue Ridge, which raises funds for the local Humane Society. Catch a Live Music Is
Better concert featuring Michelle Malone at the Blue Ridge Community Theater on
May 3. And spend the Memorial
Day weekend strolling through
more than 200 arts, crafts and food
booths in the downtown city park.
The 38th annual Arts in the Park
festival has been recognized as
one of the “Top 20 Events” by the
Southeastern Tourism Society.
Whatever you decide to do,
we hope you’ll find everything
you need for a memorable visit
in these pages.

#1 – Go Zippin’
(Ocoee Ziplines & Canopy Tours,
ocoeecanopytour.com / Zipline
Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge, zip
blueridge.com) — Climb up, clip in and

vistas. You’ll fly from treetop sky towers
along ziplines, suspension bridges and
more as you zip, walk and climb your
way through some awesome family
adventure!
#2 – Go Junkin’
(3 Monkeys Antiques & Auction,
2380 E. First St., 3monkeysantiques.com)
— Remember going to Grandma’s house
and seeing all the really cool stuff? Well,
in addition to over 7,000 square feet of
indoor shopping, 3 Monkeys features an
outdoor Flea Market on weekends and a
4,500-square-foot Auction House, which
holds a monthly sale on the 4th Saturday
of every month. The “Monkey Yard” is
also filled with wagon wheels, primitive
tools, cast iron and yard art.
#3–Go Fishin’
(Blue Ridge Fly Fishing Company, 490
E. Main St., blueridgeflyfishing.com) —
Fly fishing is on the bucket list of many
folks who come to the “Trout Capital of
Georgia.” You can get your feet wet
with a simple two-hour introductory
class that covers everything from
Blue Ridge
Fly Fishing
Zipline Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge
choosing a rod and reel to presenting
the fly. Or ask the folks at Blue Ridge
Fly Fishing about their wade and drift
boat trips so you can turn that dream
into reality. It’s time to stop wishin’!
#4 – Go Flyin’
(Blue Ridge Helicopter Tours, 1512
Appalachian Hwy., blueridgehelicopters.
com) — See our beautiful mountains
and attractions from the best vantage
point around … 500 feet above the
ground! With tours starting at just $40
per person (up to three can ride), it’s
time to get a whole new perspective of
the Blue Ridge Mountains!
#5 – Go Pickin’
(Mercier Orchards, 8660 Blue Ridge
Dr., mercier-orchards.com) — Sweet,
juicy berries are ripe for the pickin’ at
Mercier Orchards — strawberries in
May, cherries in June and blueberries in
July. Of course, U-pick is always subject
to conditions and availability, so be sure
to call ahead for best days and times.
Ask about blossom tours, too!

the Neighbors
Within a short drive northeast of Blue Ridge, you’ll find several
fascinating towns and plenty of fun activities.
Young Harris & Hiawassee (40 min.) — The gorgeous
campus of historic Young Harris College is just down the
road and is home to the Rollins Planetarium, which offers
public shows throughout the year. If skies are clear, the
Observatory is open immediately after planetarium shows.
Nearby, you don’t have to be a guest to experience the incredible amenities at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa. Order
Sunday brunch on the veranda, savor the
views from the lodge, or enjoy a relaxing
massage or horseback ride. Just a few more
miles east on Hwy. 76, Hiawassee is home
to scenic Lake Chatuge, where you’ll find
a beach area, marinas, boat rentals, water
sports and lakeside dining.
Frontage Media Solutions
Blairsville (20 min.) — Our nearest neighbor to
the east, Blairsville is a close-knit community rich in
Appalachian history and traditions. In addition to the
Historic Union County Courthouse, the quaint town
square is the site of fun, family-oriented events such
as the Spring Arts & Crafts Festival (May 21-22) and
Mountain Heritage Festival (Aug. 30-31).The Blairsville
Cruisers host a first-Saturday Cruise-In on the Square of
classic, custom and collectible cars. Union County is
also home to Vogel State Park, one of Georgia’s oldest
and most popular state parks. And just off Hwy. 515 at
Meeks Park, you can celebrate all things Scottish at the
Blairsville Scottish Festival & Highland Games (June
14-15). This three-day event includes athletic competitions, pipe and drum bands, children’s games, ethnic
food, music, dancing and reenactments.

Fun
to Squash Something?
There are literally only two places in the country where
you can jump into 17 tons of roaring military steel and
flatten a car in a hood-crumpling, glass-shattering crush.
And one of them is right here in
Fannin County! Hit the heavy equipment playground in Morganton for
5 acres of bumps, dips and humps
in a military tank, military truck or
construction equipment. Talk about
a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Dining Adventures
From melt-in-your-mouth BBQ to fresh
sandwiches and Italian favorites,
discover delectable dining here!
M
ix a little mountain air with some
outdoor activity and, suddenly,
what’s for dinner (or breakfast
or lunch!) becomes the most
important question of the day.
Turns out altitude does affect
appetite!
Fortunately, the Blue Ridge mountains are home to some truly inspired
chefs. Homegrown favorites include the
proverbial meat-and-three, as well as
smoky barbecue, delectable pasta and
fresh trout. And several cutting-edge
chefs from across the South have heeded
the call of the mountains and brought
fine dining to our area with tantalizing
appetizers and full-course meals.
Eat well!

Things Y
#1 – Pizza, Pasta & Sports
(Blue Jeans Pizza & Pasta Factory,
11 Mountain Street, 706-632-6503)
— Have kids hungry for pizza while
you’d like a bit more variety? Start with
fried mushrooms, then think plates
piled with spaghetti, lasagna or Greek
salad with chicken. Add a glass of wine
or a mug of cold beer to quench your
thirst. And for dessert? An incredible
carrot cake! Enjoy it all while watching
your team on the big-screen TVs.
#2 – Coffee & Muffins & More
(L&L Beanery Cafe & Bakery, 260A
W. Main Street, 706-632-3242) —
Pair your favorite coffee creation with
a muffin but be sure to come back
for lunch. Creamy soups compliment
chicken croissants. Adventuresome salads long to be followed by an amazing
almond torte. And it’s all made onsite
and served in a cozy living room atmosphere surrounded by art.

#3 – Giant Pretzels & Cold Beer
(Black Bear Bier Garten, 500 E.

14 craft, domestic and imported beers.
Then get really serious with a selection
of scrumptious German and American
foods including thick sandwiches with
authentic German meats and cheeses.
#4 – Shakes, Malts & More
(C-Bolt’s Restaurant & Malt Shop,

— Hmm, should I skip lunch for a milkshake or an old-fashioned malt? Better
not! You don’t want to miss the Chili
Jalapeno burgers, the loaded, monstersized kielbasa, the almond chicken melt
or the pulled-pork barbecue sandwich.
Just be sure to save room for ice cream!
#5 – Relaxed Outdoor Dining
(Christy Lee’s Courtyard Grille,
588 E. Main Street, 706-946-5100)
— Sit back and relax in the courtyard to

DirectionsBlueRidge.com Spring Is “Winging” Its Way to the Mountains
by Tom Striker, Owner, Blue Ridge Bird Seed Company
N
ow that winter’s chill is finally
slipping away, the birds are
returning to our beautiful mountains. The Purple Martins return in
mid-March and our wonderful hummingbirds begin visiting feeders in
early April. Bluebirds and Carolina
Chickadees are nesting right now; all
you need is a birdhouse with a 1½"
entrance hole to attract either one.
As you stroll a mountain trail or
relax on your cabin porch, listen to
the spring songs of our woods: The
Wood Thrush calls “EEE-OLAY” from
the deep woods; the Eastern Towhee
asks you to “DRINK YOUR TEEEE”;
and the Cardinal
calls “CHEERCHEER-CHEER”
and “PURTYPURTY-PURTY.”
At night, you may
hear the threeAn Eastern Towhee
note WHIPwelcomes spring.
POOR-WILL
or, at lower elevations, the four-note
CHUCK-WILLS-WID-DOW. Kick
back, relax and enjoy the sounds of
spring. Be sure to ask the folks at Blue
Ridge Bird Seed Company for dates
and times of upcoming bird walks and
seminars. Let’s go birding!

Join the Club and Connect

by Sarah Auman, Owner, Out of the Blue
O
ver the years, I’ve searched for ways to
share my passion for unique wines, artisan cheeses, and uncommon beers & ales. And
the technology has finally caught up with my
dreams! This spring, we’re introducing the Out
of the Blue Wine & Growler Club. Now this

be a value-added celebration of gourmet living
today.
— from hand-picked wines to fresh-from-the-tap
growlers and all the foods that pair perfectly with them.
At the heart of it all is a brand-new
app that you can download for free
(search the App Store on your smartphone for Out of the Blue). For a modest annual membership fee, you can
choose the tier of benefits that matches
your tastes and interests. Then, sit back
and enjoy the shared experience of
being connected with others who share
your passions. It might be an exclusive
invitation to an in-store tasting or sommelier event. Or, it could be an e-mail
with news of a superlative under-$20,
94-rated wine from Australia that just
came in.
Of course, the app will track your
purchases, so you’ll receive discounts,
specials and members-only rewards
when you reach various levels of spending. Best of all, you can shop the store
online — so you can stay connected
with your friends at Out of the Blue
long after you’ve returned home!

Because Homegrown
Just Tastes Better!
Hit the North Georgia Farm Trail
for a taste that’s homegrown
and handmade
T
he North Georgia Mountains are
known for some of the state’s tastiest natural treats — from mountaincrisp apples in Ellijay to savory-sweet
sorghum syrup in Blairsville and, now,
a burgeoning microbrew and wine scene
in Blue Ridge, Hiawassee and beyond.
“Folks up here understood the value
of locally grown long before ‘organic’
and ‘natural’
became marketing buzz
words,” notes
Jan Hackett,
president
of the Fannin
County
Chamber of
Commerce.
“Now, we
have something that ties
all of these
agricultural treasures together.” That
“something” is the North Georgia Farm
Trail, a scenic route that meanders
roughly along Hwy. 515/76 through
Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Young
Harris and Hiawassee.
Visit the Farm
Trail website at
gafarmtrail.com
or pick up a free
48-page brochure
at the Fannin
County Welcome
Center.
Using the Farm Trail’s website
(gafarmtrail.com), you can easily plan a
day’s worth of agri-adventures — everything from u-pick orchards, berry patches and farm markets to agricultural heritage sites such as the Byron Herbert
Reece Farm. Here in Fannin County,
the Farm Trail connects hungry (and
thirsty!) visitors to some classic tastes
— fried pies and fresh cider at Mercier
Orchards, regional microbrews at the
Blue Ridge Brewery and locally sourced
upscale fare at the Black Sheep restaurant.
The Farm Trail’s selection of unique
lodging and farm-to-table dining options
also make it easy to plan an entire “farm
trail weekend.” For more information,
including upcoming events and links to
farm trail sites, visit gafarmtrail.com.

Sta
Lodging Market Matures
Once the domain of a handful of momand-pop operations, lodging has become
big business in the mountains. Now, you
can take your choice of close-in hotels,
cozy cabins, quaint B&Bs, rustic lodges
and multilevel homes that can hold several generations of family. Along the way,
cabin rental companies have expanded,
matured and grown much more in tune
with the needs of their customers.
Escape to Blue Ridge,® for example,
offers an unparalleled selection of area
cabin vacation rentals and, through its
partnership with a professional linen service, provides guests with high-end luxury linens (nothing beats a luxurious fluffy
towel after a hot shower!). “Before, linen
quality depended on whatever the homeowner supplied,” notes co-owner Pamela
Miracle. “We’ve created a standard
across our entire portfolio that is more
in line with that of a luxury hotel, and
our guests have grown to appreciate
more from their Blue Ridge
vacation cabin rental experience.”
Many cabin rental companies also
provide resort-style service via a concierge
that can handle all the details for a day of
horseback riding or whitewater rafting,
arrange for a flyfishing guide, even make
restaurant and theater reservations.
Finding the Perfect Cabin
Lodging providers here in North Georgia
have all invested substantially to provide
a wonderful online experience for customers, complete with gorgeous photos,
detailed information and online booking. But here’s the best part — they also
invest themselves in their business. That
means they actually enjoy talking with
their customers! Many of these companies are owned and operated by folks
who have lived here their entire lives.
So go ahead and ask them where their
favorite picnic spot is (and maybe even
their super-secret fishing hole!). Then sit
back, relax and stay awhile!

Georgia Mountain Cabin Rentals
T
he decision to use your mountain
cabin as a rental/investment property becomes so much easier when you
have an experienced management company in your corner. As you evaluate
potential partners, be sure to find one
that provides these five key services.
#1 – Input on income potential:
A good property management company
can advise you on local market conditions,
travel trends and how to expect and
plan for seasonal occupancy demands.
#2 – Marketing help: The best
management companies invest in highquality videos and photos of your property, guest surveys, contests, promotions,
rack cards, advertising, PR and more to
drive business to your rental property.
#3 – A solid reservation system:
Being able to book vacation rentals in

a secure, professional environment is
another plus when working with a pro
perty manager. Look for a comprehensive reservations system that allows for
convenient bookings in-person, over
the phone or online.
#4 – Ongoing property management: Going with a pro assures you
that there are “eyes and ears” on your
second home. Your property manager
should oversee services such as lawn
care, pest control, hot tub care, A/C service, etc. They can also assist with staging and set-up, including insights for
upgrades that make homes more profitable, such as re-purposing spaces into
game rooms or home theaters.
#5 – Accountability: Finally, your
property manager should be completely
accountable, not only to you, but also to
guests. Check the company’s online ratings to see what guests are saying. Also
make sure the property manager competently handles all these tasks: 1) Pays
you in a timely manner; 2) Takes care of
your home properly; 3) Is easily reachable via email, phone or text; 4) Collects
and pays taxes to both the state and local
government; and 5) Is in good standing
with agencies such as the BBB, Department of Revenue and Secretary of State.
