Welcome to the
Cullinan Holdings
015 has certainly not been a
year for the fainthearted with
many challenges encountered.
This includes but is not limited
to: power outages, Ebola, unfriendly
new South African visa regulations,
zenophobia, civil wars, oil price
fluctuations, currency fluctuations,
financial market instability etc. Despite
these challenges, you have shown great
character and carried on regardless, and
I am pleased to say that forward bookings
are looking a lot more positive.
September 2015 Newsletter
Introduction
W
elcome to our second newsletter for
2015. Take some time to familiarise
yourself with the other companies within
the Cullinan Holdings group and learn more
about our diverse operations and the people
who work there.
On another positive side, it was a pleasure to see Mr Stanley Tollman,
Chairman of The Travel Corporation being recognised into the British
Travel and Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2015. This prestigious lifetime
achievement award goes to exceptional entrepreneurs who have
significantly contributed to the British tourism industry. I am also
delighted to advise that Ashford Castle, recently refurbished by
the Red Carnations Hotel Group, was voted ‘The Best Hotel in the
World’ by Virtuoso Travel Group from the United States. Carnations
Hotel Group was also voted number two as best company to work
for in the United Kingdom by the Sunday Times in 2015. Exceptional
achievements that we are proud to be associated with.
Looking at forward bookings and the year ahead, we see an
improvement and rays of sunshine for our hard pressed inbound and
transportation divisions. Our outbound businesses have performed
admirably under a weak exchange rate and an anaemic economy.
Congratulations in particular goes to all the teams at Pentravel,
Thompsons Travel, Thompsons Leisure and Thompsons Holidays who
have performed admirably and well above market trends for the year.
It is also pleasing to see the efforts of our Marine Division over the past
years paying off with excellent results this year. My congratulations
goes to the entire team at Central Boating and Manex. Well done and
thank you!
Mr Stanley Tollman
receives prestigious

I
n a glittering ceremony yesterday at London’s Dorchester

& Hospitality Hall of Fame, presented by Travel Weekly and The

in the travel, hospitality, leisure and tourism sectors.

On the local front our mentorship programme continues to perform
exceptionally well with great results, and I would like to extend our
special thanks to Tracy Schaffler for the superb leadership role that she
has played in this achievement. This is something that we are all proud
to see and to be associated with.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank each
and every one of you for a superb effort during a challenging 2015
year, keep up the hard work, remain with the faith, we are seeing
an improvement and upliftment to our businesses and we will see a
significant improvement in our inbound businesses over the next 12
months.
Best wishes
Michael Tollman

Helping to make dreams come true
A friend to all and a loyal colleague,
passed away on 2 March 2015
Nicolas Mtaki, a humble ADT patrol man
with a big heart, has made his dream
come true by establishing a small IT
centre in his community. A place where
young people can come and develop
skills, surf the net and learn.
This was accomplished with the donation
of Thompsons Cape Town’s old ‘written

chairs which he bought from us.

campaign, Canada-based Goway
Travel donated over R50 000 to the
Wildlands Conservation Trust at Indaba
this year. This is the second donation
- the first two years ago was over R53
000. As part of Thompsons Africa’s
support of conservation, we highlighted
the excellent work of the Wildlands
Conservation Trust in the fight against
Rhino poaching and our partner Goway
Travel were thrilled to jump on board in
support of this worthy cause and so the
‘Looking out for rhino’ campaign was
born.

Their itinerary included a balance of leisure sightseeing and church services/meetings
with the South African Anglican community including clergy, priests and archbishops in
the three archdiocese they travelled (Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town).
Award presented to Springbok Atlas Tours

The highlight of the trip was definitely meeting the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
for tea at the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation in the V&A Waterfront,
which was arranged with a lot of perseverance by Blessing, our tour consultant,
working alongside Mr Tutu’s PA. What an opportunity of a lifetime for this group!

a tour of the Falls. Our journey concluded

complimented by a sensational river cruise,

Grosvenor Tours’ Partnership with World of DMCs & Imex Frankfurt
Grosvenor Tours was approached in January 2015 to join World
of DMCs. This is an elite partnership of 60 DMCs across the world.
Through joint networking and cross sales, they share incentive
and conference business for mutual benefit and growth of
market share. All members need to fulfil strict entry criteria and
with only one DMC member per country (except in the USA and
8
Canada), this was a wonderful opportunity for Grosvenor Tours
to become the South African member. During the recent IMEX
in Frankfurt, all World of DMC members met to discuss strategy
for 2015 – 2016, and business continued at the MESSE in Frankfurt
where multiple successful meetings were held, with some
providing exciting future opportunities for 2016 and beyond.

James Largier of Manex & Power Marine,
sailed AL Mount Gay Rum, a Farr 38, to a
convincing victory on handicap, with 8
hours to spare over the second placed
boat. That was a resounding win in what
ended up being a tough race. They
were also a challenger for line honours
too, finishing just 40 minutes behind
the eventual winner. There top-flight
performance was put into perspective
when described in race commentary as
‘fighting above their weight’.

on the day including a dive experience
in Bali.

IMEX and Fam Trip - By Nicola
Bertus and Nicola were invited to attend IMEX in Frankfurt
followed by a Fam trip to Poland. They spent 2 nights in Warsaw
and 2 nights in Krakow. Warsaw was an interesting experience
as 95% of the city was destroyed during World War 2 so many of
the buildings are replicas of the originals. In Krakow, they stayed
at the Sheraton hotel which had beautiful views over the Vistula
River. They then departed for Auschwitz – the Concentration/
Extermination camp situated about an hour and a half out of
10
Krakow - a truly sombre and humbling experience. The next few
days were spent eating, drinking, exploring, shopping, visiting a
Salt Mine, dinner transfers by horse and carriage, museums, site
visits and lots of walking. They had an amazing time and would
definitely recommend Poland as an Incentive destination for
any groups who have already travelled to the better known
destinations.

The result was a fresh and inviting next

KZN
Cape
Gauteng
You would never say it was winter in KZN
when Pentravel’s largest region met at
Kangelani Lodge in Hillcrest.
The theme for Pentravel’s Cape Family
Day was ‘Fun House’ and those who
attended really flew their freak flags!
Pentravel’s Gauteng region descended
upon Old Macdonald Farm in Lanseria for
a day of fun in the sun.
Children seemed to outnumber adults,
and a highlight was a huge kiddies’ tugof-war on possibly the world’s longest
rope. There was an old-fashioned village
festival atmosphere.
The day kicked off with ‘The ultimate
braai master’ competition. Pentravel
Tygervalley took the title with a mouthwatering fillet steak in a creamy brandy
sauce.
CEO, Sean Hough was part of the braai
tasting panel, “I have never eaten so
much food in my life. I can’t believe
how much effort and love has been put
into this event. The grand prize went to
Pentravel Musgrave who prepared the
most authentically South African meal.”
“We loved spending the day with all
of our families and work mates in one
place” Vicky Steinhardt, Land Product
Manager.
Children had the garden area and
jumping castle all to themselves, and
were later entertained by a facepainting-clown. Our consultants and
their partners had even more fun in the
bar later in the afternoon with fiercely
competitive beer pong and various other
delights that involved some drinking. It
was a great day of building relationships
and friendships.
With jumping castles, kayaking and
games hosted by each shop, the children
were kept entertained while their parents
could focus on braaiing, socialising. “I
can’t believe it has taken us so long
to get together as a region like this.
Gauteng has really set the bar.” said
CEO, Sean Hough.
12
“Events like this do amazing things for our
culture, and make me so proud to work
for this company!” added National Sales
Manager, Michelle Bergset. There was
a real sense of togetherness and it will
certainly become a permanent part of
Pentravel’s annual event calendar.
