Romsdalseggen - Visit Åndalsnes
Romsdalseggen
Norway’s most beautiful hike - in two variants
Are you planning on doing just one hike in your life
this is the one!
Romsdalseggen - normal route
One of the most amazing hikes in Norway
is situated in Romsdal, next to Åndalsnes.
Breathtaking views, spectacular landscapes, and a fantastic hike experience is
waiting for you at top of the Romsdalseggen ridge.
The hike starts at the car park in Vengedalen. Follow the road a short distance. The
start of the trail is on your right hand side
just before the bridge. Follow a well marked
trail up the hill. About halfway up the hillside you cross the waterfall over a bridge,
and the path continues on the left side of
the river.
When the landscape flattens you can see
the rear side of the Romsdalseggen ridge.
The trail continues along the streamlet.
This is the last chance to fill the drinking
bottles with water, in case you don’t carry
any water. At Jamnåbotn the path divides.
Turn left and follw the trail up the boulder
in the slightly steep mountain side, to the
top of the ridge. You will be rewarded with
an amazing 360 degrees view.
To get an even more spectacular view you
turn to the left on top of the ridge, and
follow the signpost to Blånebba. When you
reach the summit, the view takes your breath away. This extra summit takes another
hour, but it’s definitely worth it.
Follow the path towards Åndalsnes. You
basically walk on the ridge all the way back.
It gets steeper through Halsaskaret. A short
passage before you reach Mjølvafjellet
consists of steep and rocky mountain walls
to climb, but it’s secured with chains in
the most exposed parts. This part can be
challenging for some. You should not suffer
from a solid fear of heights on this route.
At Romsdalseggen ridge the path has a
good cover of vegetation. You will be walking on top of the ridge, mostly fairly broad,
and the path is good. Gentle descent from
top of Mjølvafjellet to Nesaksla, then a steep
descent down to Åndalsnes. From Nesaksla
you walk down the Romsdalstrappa, stone
steps built by Sherpas from Nepal. Feel
the air under your feet at Rampestreken
viewpoint. Take your time on the last kilometer. This can be a tough one. Be prepared
for a muddy and sometimes slippy experience, and aching knees.
Children and dogs
This is a long and exhausting hike, and it is
not suitable for children younger than 10
years. Younger children should be used to
hike longer distances and be steady when
walking in rough mountain terrain. In the
steepest parts the dog must be carried. The
dog should be in a healthy condition and
energic.

Car parking
We recommend that you park
your car at Rauma Kulturhus, behind Grand Hotell Bellevue, a 5
minutes walk to the train station.
Bring plenty to drink! Animals are grazing in the area, so to be on the safe
side to avoid sickness it’s recommended that you don’t drink water from
the streams. Wear good walking
shoes, preferable hiking boots that
give good support to your ankle. The
weather can change quickly, so it’s
important to bring windproof
clothing and warm underwear. It is
common to bring gloves and a warm
hat hiking in the Romsdal mountains,
then the weather will not be a bad
suprise. With a nice lunchbag - and
Nordic walking poles - we hope you’ll
enjoy this amazing hike!

If you choose the alternative hike Romsdalseggen via Høgnosa you avoid the
steepest part of Romsdalseggen. But you
can still enjoy a breathtaking view as you
connect with the normal route at the top
of Mjølvafjellet.
From start follow the same route as described for Romsdalseggen normal route. At
Jamnåbotn when the two paths divides you
continue straight ahead towards Kaffikjelbua. After you pass the small cabin Kaffikjelbua cross the river, and follow the creek
on the left side for a short while. The trail
takes off to the left and up the steep hillside.
On the plateau the path divides. The path
to the left leads you to Romsdalseggen,
and the path straight forward is a shortcut
to Nesakskla and Åndalsnes. Turn left and
cross towards the Romsdalseggen ridge
on a rocky path that goes slightly upwards.
Make sure you follow the red painted marks
on rocks and cairns as you proceed towards
the top of the ridge. Final traverse to summit
crossing the scree gully.
At the top of Mjølvafjellet the view is spectacular, and you’ll see Vengetindene, Trollveggen, Trollstigen, Kongen, Dronningen,
Bispen, the Romsdalsfjord and Åndalsnes.
At this point you connect with the normal
route.
Duration time for this hike is expected to be
at least 1 hour more than the normal route.
The hike is 2 kilometers longer, and is also
more exhausting. But it is a good option if
you want to avoid Halsaskaret, the steepest
part of Romsdalseggen normal route.
