rainer Dale Romans is the first to acknowledge
his previous starters did not instill confidence
going into the Kentucky Derby (gr. I); Albaugh Family
Stable's Brody's Cause, however, looks to be his best
chance so far to win the classic.
"They were all doing good, but they all had question marks," Romans said of his Derby runners that include third-place finishers Dullahan (2012) and Paddy
O'Prado (2010), and fourth-placed Shackleford (2011).
"This is my best shot. He is bred for a mile and a
quarter, and he is a multiple grade I winner on dirt."
A 3-year-old son of Giant's Causeway purchased
for $350,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September
yearling sale, Brody's Cause reinforced his status as
one of the leading contenders for this year's Derby,
accelerating to a 1 3/4-length victory over My Man

Sam and Cherry Wine in the April 9 Toyota Blue
Grass (gr. I).
The Blue Grass is the colt's second grade I victory—he won Keeneland's Breeders' Futurity last
year—improving his record to 3-0-1 from six starts,
with $1,123,138 in earnings.
Bred by Gabriel Duignan, William Arvin Jr., and
Petaluma Bloodstock in Kentucky, the colt was the
second choice in the 14-horse Blue Grass field.
Overseeing his vast stable of horses at Churchill
the morning of April 12, Romans said he was not
surprised by Brody's performance since the colt's
greatest attribute is his "quick turn of foot."
The trainer added, "This is a serious, serious racehorse. He does everything you want a horse to do."
If anything, the second-generation trainer is
surprised by the colt's third to eventual juvenile
champion and current Derby favorite Nyquist in last
year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Keeneland and
his inexplicable seventh in the March 12 Tampa Bay
Derby (gr. II).
"We never could come up with an excuse for the
Tampa Bay performance. I guess we'll just draw a
line through it," Romans said.
Although not as accomplished as his stablemate,
Cherry Wine is 23rd on the Road to the Kentucky
Derby points list and is also expected to make the
Derby's 20-horse maximum field.
"He's a solid horse who, if he gets in, will be competitive," Romans said. BH

SAYING GOOD-BYE TO DINNY PHIPPS
By Teresa Genaro
T
had been transformed from a "sleepy breed registrar" to an organization that protected the welfare of
horses and increased horse racing's integrity, thanks
to Phipps' creative and financial investments. Phipps
served as chairman of The Jockey Club from 1983 to
2015, when Janney assumed the chairmanship. In
2015 TJC acquired a majority interest in Blood-Horse.
Each man spoke of the devotion between Phipps
and his wife, Andrea, detailing particularly her dedication and care while Phipps wrestled with a number
of ailments during the last five years of his life.
As part of the service, Phipps' son Ogden Phipps II
read "The Fishermen's Prayer," which Dinny Phipps,
an avid outdoorsman, suggested be included.
I pray that I may live to fish
Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
And peacefully asleep
That in His mercy I be judged
Big enough to keep. BH

he racing world was well represented April 12 at
the funeral of Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, held at
St. James' Church on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Phipps died of pancreatic cancer April 6.
Nearly filling the church, which accommodates
1,200 people, Phipps' friends and family celebrated
his life and mourned his death in an Episcopalian
service preceded by remembrances from friend and
outdoorsman Carl Navarre, former New York City
mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Phipps' cousin and
partner Stuart Janney III.
Together they created the image of a man devoted to his family and committed to integrity who
harbored a sense of humor and fun that lurked close
beneath a serious surface.
Navarre told of meeting Phipps in 1975 as the
guide on a Florida fishing trip during which they ran
out of gas 30 miles off shore. With no radio and daylight fading, Phipps was unperturbed.
"He sat back in the boat, lit a cigar, and said, 'You'll
figure it out,' " recalled Navarre.
Working for Phipps meant becoming
a part of his family, he said, "He was a
big man with a big heart. He was loved
and revered."
Although Phipps never had a horse
that swept the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), the
Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and the Belmont
Stakes (gr. I), Bloomberg pointed out
that he'd won a more important Triple
Crown of family, business, and community. In particular, Bloomberg noted that
horse racing was "cleaner, safer, and
better in many ways" due to Phipps' contributions as an owner/breeder and as
chairman of both the New York Racing
Association and The Jockey Club.
Speaking of their time together
in New York and Florida, Bloomberg
quipped that having a boat called Buckpasser was ironic for a man who, he
said, "never passed the buck."
Janney, with whom Phipps co-bred
and -owned his only Kentucky Derby
winner, Orb in 2013, observed that under Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps (left) and Stuart Janney III celebrating their 2013 Kentucky

eteran runners Kid Cruz and Salutos Amigos
found the main track at Aqueduct Racetrack very
much to their liking April 9, both earning the week's
best Equibase Speed Figures of 117.
Kid Cruz, a 5-year-old, won the 1 1/4-mile Excelsior (gr. III), and 6-year-old Salutos Amigos earned
his first grade I win in the Carter Handicap. The 117
ESFs—a figure also earned by Calculator in his close
runner-up Carter finish—topped this week's list.
Kid Cruz may be heading for a strong 2016, as the
son of Lemon Drop Kid has posted back to back 117s in
his two starts this season. When Kid Cruz earned a 117
with his season-opening victory in the John B. Campbell
Stakes at Laurel Park it matched his career-best.

t the end of a 15-furlong race that went in about
three minutes and 20 seconds, anybody would
feel a bit older.
But 83-year-old Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally
summed it up in the winner's circle after the April 10
San Juan Capistrano Stakes (gr. IIIT) when he said of
the winner, 8-year-old Quick Casablanca, "He's old,
just like me."
It was a rewarding victory for McAnally, coming on
closing day of Santa Anita Park's winter/spring meeting, and fitting in several ways. McAnally made his
reputation not only with the legendary John Henry
but also with South American imports such as dual
champions Bayakoa and Paseana, and, more recently, the brilliant Candy Ride.
Quick Casablanca, a Chilean-bred, was 2012's
Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male
in his native land and a group I winner in Chile and
Argentina. McAnally's brand is so strong he was given
the bay son of Until Sundown by owner Pablo Gomez
even though the two men have never met.
"He just told me to do what I thought was right,"
said McAnally.
Also, McAnally has specialized in two-turn runners
and, in fact, was winning the marathon San Juan
Capistrano for the fourth time, following Interaction
(2013), Amerique (1998), and John Henry (1980). The
race was lengthened a furlong this year to avoid running over a muddy stretch when the field crossed the
main track.
"He's an old pro," McAnally said of Quick Casablanca. "He's been to Chile and Argentina and New
York and now California."
The New York portion of Quick Casablanca's
career came in 2013 when he was first imported and
given to trainer Christophe Clement.
"Clement said he didn't like the soft turf back
there," said McAnally, who added with his trademark
chuckle, "Well, it couldn't have been any softer than
what we had here the other day." California had

experienced an uncharacteristic deluge of rain in the
days before the race.
McAnally famously kept John Henry in top form
through age 9 by working him in the afternoons between races when the gelding would get his competitive juices fired up.
"Everyone thought we were showing off," said
McAnally, "but he'd just lollygag around in the morning and you couldn't keep him fit unless you worked
him between races. This horse here you can train like
a younger horse. He does everything right."
Quick Casablanca, whose bankroll now approaches $750,000, will get a rest before being pointed to
either the Arlington Million XXXIV (gr. IT) or Del Mar
Handicap (gr. IIT) in August. BH

April 12 approved plans to return to privatization,
and officials believe a decision will be made before
the state legislative session ends in June.
By the order of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, NYRA has
been under state control for more than three years.
The board was required by statute to submit a reorganization plan to the state by the end of April, with
state control due to expire in October.
The NYRA board approved three options for
reorganization, differing only in governance and the
makeup of the next board.
Under the first, a 15-person board would have 11
privately appointed and four publically appointed
members—two by the governor and one each by the
leaders of the state Senate and the Assembly.
The second calls for a 15-person board composed

2016 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEI
Listed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through April 11, 2016. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that
were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how
much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is
represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.
