Roaring back to N scale layouts this February
Weighing in at more than 400,000 pounds, with a
length in excess of 80 feet and a massive 4,300
horsepower tractive effort, the SD90/43MAC is one of
the heaviest, longest, and most powerful single diesel
locomotives in the world.
To date, there have been three production "versions" of the
SD90MAC. The SD90/43MAC was originally designed with a
6,000hp engine in mind, but was fitted with a smaller and
more reliable 4,300hp engine (which gave the 90/43 its
name) that ended up being kept that way by most railroads,
even though the option to upgrade to the higher horsepower
engine was offered at a later date.
Primarily used by railroads for coal service due to their
pulling power and ability to move high numbers of loaded
coal gondolas, likewise the N scale model SD90/43MAC is a
natural fit for Kato’s N scale Bethgon Coalporters; whose
smooth rolling wheels and perma-lock knuckle couplers
guarantee a problem free railroading experience on even the
toughest grades and roughest tracks. Whether running in
teams or alone the N scale SD90/43MAC will pull just about
anything you can throw at it, whether on analog or DCC!
