Mayor's Message
As Mayor of the City of Cotati, I'd like to
welcome you to our city.
- Table of Contents -
Cotati has long been considered the "Hub"
Susan Harvey,
of Sonoma County by virtue of its central
Cotati Mayor
location and its distinct and historic hexagonal
plaza. Surrounded by beautiful vistas of hills, vineyards,
majestic oaks and redwoods, Cotati mixes all the benefits
of living in a small city, with the cultural advantages of being
located near major urban centers and a highly acclaimed
state university. Cotati's roots are steeped in agriculture and
music, and our citizens are proud of the diverse and charming
community that has been shaped by over 100 years' history.

City of Cotati Profile
9
Cotati is home to a very clean light industrial area and is proud
of its mixed-use development and "green" building programs.
We have an energetic and involved business community and
a variety of retail experiences. There are a number of events
and celebrations that take place throughout the year that offer
something for everyone. Our annual Kids' Day Parade and
Festival, our wonderful summertime Farmers' Market, the
Cotati Jazz Festival, Oktoberfest and the Cotati Accordion
Festival, the largest Accordion Festival in California, all take
place in historic La Plaza Park, in the heart of Cotati.

Message from the Cotati Chamber President
The Cotati Chamber of Commerce is in many ways not much different than other Chambers in
that we strive to enhance our business community. We do this in several ways which include our
Quarterly Speaker Series, Open Houses and Ribbon Cutting Celebrations, Breakfast Meetings,
After Hours Mixers and our weekly "Chamber Update" emailed each week to our data base of
businesses and interested individuals.
How we are different than most other Chambers is that we have developed a slogan: "Working
together to build a prosperous, happy and safe community." I think the key word of our slogan is
Patrick McCarty,
community. I can think of no other organization that strives harder to bring together our business
President Cotati Chamber
proprietors, citizens and visitors into a thing called community. Our events demonstrate that
intention year round. Our Farmers' Market, Kids Day Parade and Celebration, Jazz Festival, Oktober Fest and MultiEvening Holiday events are just some of the ways that we choose to bring the people of Cotati and our neighbors together,
inclusively, as we actively seek to accomplish the goals that we have chosen.
I have been active in the Cotati Chamber for several years and cannot recall a single luncheon meeting, breakfast meeting,
ribbon cutting, open house or event of any kind that was deemed "members only". I invite each and every one of you to
participate in any way that you might choose in the many activities provided by the Cotati Chamber of Commerce. A good
place to start might be to send an email to; [email protected] and ask to be added to our data base so that you can
receive our weekly Chamber Update that will keep you informed of what's going on in our community.
I look forward to seeing those of you that I know, and meeting those of you whom I haven't met yet, as we work together
to build a prosperous, happy and safe community.
Patrick McCarty, President

For a city that covers only two square miles,
Cotati has an impressive number of parks with
varied offerings for recreation for all ages.
Chief among them is La Plaza Park in the heart
of town, with a bandstand, picnic tables, play
equipment and modern restrooms. Shaded
by large trees, it is a popular gathering place
for small groups or informal meals as well as
all city festivals. La Plaza Park is also one of
Cotati’s claims to fame, as it has been
registered as California Historical Landmark
No. 879 because of its unique hexagonal
shape.

Education in Cotati Sonoma State University, one of the 23 campuses of the
California State University system, has been an important part
of the local scene since 1961. With enrollment this year of
approximately 8,000, SSU has 36 academic departments and
offers 45 bachelor's degree and 16 master's degree programs,
9 credential programs, and 8 certificate programs. SSU is fully
accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
and is the only California member of the prestigious Council of
Public Liberal Arts Colleges. U.S. News and World Report ranks
SSU as one of America’s Best Colleges each year.
Thomas Page School
For its size, Cotati has unique educational resources, beginning
with a public cooperative nursery school and three private
preschools to serve the youngest citizens and extending
through the university years at Sonoma State University,
immediately adjacent to Cotati, and beyond that at Santa Rosa
Junior College.
SSU has a state‑of‑the‑art library and information center, and
the soon-to-be-open Green Music Center is designed to become
one of the great concert halls of the world. The Wine Business
Institute in the School of Business & Economics is the first and
only program in the U.S. to focus exclusively on the business
aspects of the wine industry. Each year SSU sponsors hundreds
of seminars, workshops, lectures, conferences, exhibits and
other programs open to the public. The Center for the Performing
Arts and University Art Gallery are also major local attractions.
Thomas Page School, operated by the Cotati‑Rohnert Park
Unified School District, is located in the beautiful rolling hills on
the west side of Cotati, and offers outstanding educational and
cultural opportunities for children. Currently they have students
from kindergarten through sixth grade, but are planning to
implement a seventh and eighth grade program beginning in
2012-13. The program will begin next year with the addition of
a seventh grade class and expand to include eighth grade in
2013-14. Thomas Page School is within walking or bicycling
distance of some neighborhoods in Cotati, but school bus
service is also available.
Santa Rosa Junior College, founded in 1918, is known for its
academic rigor, its outstanding job training programs, superb
faculty, comprehensive student services, and excellent facilities.
The Cotati-Rohnert Park school district includes five other
elementary schools, one middle school, and four high schools
in neighboring Rohnert Park. Cotati also has two private schools
serving K - 6th and 7th - 12th grades.
SRJC operates two campuses in Sonoma County: a 100+ acre
campus in the heart of Santa Rosa and a 40-acre campus in
Petaluma. SRJC also operates a regional Public Safety Training
Center in Windsor, a 365-acre self-supporting Shone Farm
near Forestville, a Culinary Arts Center in downtown Santa
Rosa, and a Technology Academy on the Petaluma Campus.
Each semester classes are offered at more than 70 locations
throughout the District by nearly 3,500 faculty and staff.
The Department
of Theatre
Arts & Dance
2012-2013 Season
SRJC offers a strong General Education program for students
planning to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and
more than 175 career skills certificate programs that prepare
students for the workforce. SRJC’s basic skills program prepares
students for college level courses. The College grants both
associate in arts (A.A.) and associate in science (A.S.) degrees.

Notes
from the
Road
The harmonic motif to the concrete overpass
and freeway sound walls honor Cotati's long
history of music at its legendary venues and
longtime festivals. More notes are expected
to be added to the overpass along with the
possibility of lyrics as well at some point.
Nashville has its own Music Row - why not
Cotati? Cotati's musical heritage is long and
rich, home to clubs and studios, the annual
accordion and jazz festivals, so it is perhaps
appropriate that on each side of the 101
overpass through Cotati, the retaining walls
and overpass have been decorated with a
series of music notes. It is unclear however
whether the musical notations form an
actual tune.
The question remains: is there a discernible
melody up there? Is it the last chord to
"A Day in the Life"? Can someone with a
guitar go try and play it and find out?
Concerned about copyright implications,
Caltrans decided against using notes to a
popular song, choosing instead an original
melody composed by a member of the
design firm for the 101 project. Once on
paper however, the notes did not work well
together visually, so adjustments were made
and no one seems to know what the new
notation might actually sound like.

OLIVER'S LOCAL MUSIC INITIATIVE
jh
If music be the food of life then play on! Local food
emporium Oliver's Market is celebrating the wealth
of local music with a compilation CD and promotional
campaign called "Real Music" which, according to their
website, will use in-store broadcasting, live in-store
performances and local radio.
"It's a double CD with over two hours of music and thirty
three artists from over a hundred submissions," said Tom
Scott, Oliver's Markets V.P. and General Manager, "The
music on the first CD is pretty varied. We've got some
bluegrass, we've got some blues, some rock and roll.
We've got some swing. " The first in a series of Sonoma
County “Real Music” compilation CD’s is to be sold in all
Oliver's outlets. Profits will benefit The Redwood Empire
Food Bank. Two more CD's are planned for the near
future.
"It means there's a lot of
good music in Sonoma..."
The program is supported by The Last Record Store
in Santa Rosa, Blair Hardman of Zone Recording and
KRSH 95.9 FM. A "Real Music" showcase will include live
performances at Oliver's Markets, along with CD release
parties at The Last Record Store and a series of workshops
for musicians to be held at Zone Recording.
"It means there's a lot of good music in Sonoma," Scott
told us. "We've got a lot of the old guard on this, the
Thugz, the Pulsators, Danny Sorentino, Michael Barclay
but there's a couple that people might not know and,
as we go forward, we're going to dig a little deeper into
some of the lesser known talent."
Real food, real music, it's the roots of Sonoma.

How the
Cotati Museum
came to be
Cotati has been a community for over 120 years, and a city for almost
50; it has had an interesting and varied history, but never a museum.
Lloyd and Prue Draper, who owned The Cotatian weekly newspaper
from 1951 to 1965, have collected Cotati historic documents,
artifacts, and memorabilia for over 50 years, hoping that some day the
city would have an appropriate place to store and display them, and
make them available to the public. As various organizations in town
disbanded, they entrusted their records and artifacts to the Drapers
with the understanding that they would be appropriately preserved.
Wendy and Bob Gilman of Window Perfect donated and installed
Venetian blinds over windows cleaned by Rocky Deitz of Sunshine
Services. TAP Plastics, Cotati Oaks True Value Hardware, and Grainger
Co. provided discounts on necessary items. Jim Reaney primed the
walls and John Moore recruited his whole family - wife, Lisa, and
children Richard, Rachel, and Riley - to paint all walls, ceiling, and
trim; Susan Harvey took over painting in the main room and storeroom.
Hines Signs donated a custom-designed sign to credit the workers and
donors. Bob Brooks of Copy, Mail & More filled all our printing needs
gratis.
The Drapers, assisted pro bono by attorney Maurice Fredericks,
established the Cotati Historical Society in 2007 as a California nonprofit corporation. They appointed a Board of Directors and petitioned
the City of Cotati to lease an unused room at City Hall for a historic
museum and archive. Robert Leys, Cotati architect, produced the plan
for converting the room from a much-partitioned police department
into a museum.
In short, the Cotati Museum is a tremendous community effort, with
enthusiastic help given by many, many volunteers and local businesses.
Without their help, it could never have happened.
—display cases, tables,
The society began collecting furnishings
shelves, chairs, a desk — in 2008. The first items were antique glass
and wood display cases donated by Harry Bosworth in Geyserville. A
crew of volunteers - Bruce and Connie Martin, Bob Renati, Simone
Wilson, Dave Thomas, and Prue and Robin Draper brushed off the dust
of years and loaded the fragile old pieces into a stock trailer for the
journey to Cotati. Other items included a desk donated by the West
Sonoma County Museum in Sebastopol, a table donated by T.J. Nelson
of Windsor, a cabinet built by Paul Harvey for a set of map drawers
donated by Tom Origer, and a large chest of drawers bought at a
bargain at a yard sale.
The Cotati Historical Society continued a favorite Cotati tradition
with their annual Cotati Museum fundraising chicken barbecue on
April 15 and appreciated the wide support they received from the
community with financial help and dozens of outstanding gifts for
their silent auction.

RISK MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Connie and Bruce Martin provided free use of a vacant warehouse as
a furniture-refinishing locale. The Martins, Dave Thomas, Jim Wolford,
Bob Herrerias, Prue Draper, Bob and Robin Draper, Arch Stewart, and
Rick Stewart worked through the winter of 2008 and much of 2009 on
refinishing the items. In the fall of 2009, Bruce Hammond and Steve
Eichbaum began remodeling the room at Cotati City Hall, with City
Manager Dianne Thompson as design director. The plan was to make
the room resemble the first grade classroom that it had been when
the City Hall was the old Cotati School. City of Cotati crews handled
demolition of old partitions and suspended ceiling; Dennis Thomas
of North Counties Drywall donated all materials and labor to install
new sheetrock; Johnny Kistenmacher of Aladdin Electric donated his
services and materials to rewire the room; Hammond Fine Homes
contributed material and labor for the wainscot and trim. Special
thanks also go to Police Chief Robert Stewart, City Engineer Damien
O’Bid, and Finance Director Jone Hayes.
We are proud of the
fine City of Cotati
and salute all its
businesses and residents.
Thank you for making
it such a great place
to live and do business.
Rick Stewart of Arch’s Glass donated and installed a new window;
Michael Pastryk of Liberty Valley Doors designed and built a new door to
match the building’s vintage doors. With coordination by Geoff Fox, Jeff
Nelson of Trammell-Nelson Floors refinished the original old fir floor
to a beautiful honey color that complements the old oak furnishings.
Dunn-Edwards Paints donated all paints and finishes used in the room
and on the furniture; David Glaubinger directed the lighting plan and
Lowe’s donated all track lights, electrical parts, and a shelf for the
storeroom, which was carpeted courtesy of City Carpets. Mike Sheehan
of Pacific Heating donated services of technicians several times to get
the heating system operating, and Al Martinoni of Cotati Public Works
managed necessary plumbing repairs in the small washroom.

Cotati Arts Project has been adding a series of new sculptures to the downtown
area. “Inside Out" on the lawn by the corner of La Plaza and Old Redwood
Highway is the second of three public sculptures added to the landscape. The
artist is former SSU student Missy Engelhardt who took about six months to
complete the project.
The sculpture contains a number of abstract pieces across the grass. The
concrete sack-like artifices allow people to sit on them as if they are benches in
a park, which in fact they are. Nearly 3,000 pounds of cement was used in the
construction of "Inside Out". The installation costs for the project were donated
by Exchange Bank to honor of longtime employee Nadine Wolford.
The Cotati Arts Project (CAP) brings together businesses, non-profits and the
arts community in an effort to improve the aesthetic nature of our town. As
part of the Cotati Chamber of Commerce, the CAP board is interested in using
public artworks to enhance our environment while attracting new businesses to
downtown locations. Overseeing the Cotati Arts Project is a twelve-person board

CRITTER CREEK
Sonoma County is really one of nature's
true wonderlands, from the vineyards to the
ocean, and Cotati is right in the middle of it
all. The Cotati Creek Critters is a grassroots
organization that wants to see Cotati’s stretch
of the Laguna de Santa Rosa become a green
corridor of habitat for native and migratory birds, pond
turtles, frogs, butterflies and dragonflies, as well as an
urban greenway with walkways and bicycle path.

"Parts of the laguna are now

Outreach co-ordinator Jenny Blaker was one of the
founders back in 1998. "It started as a very small
volunteer organization behind a couple of houses in
1998, but grew a lot when we got a grant from the State
Department for Water Resources in 2005, that's when
we were able to get more established."
Cotati, but further downstream, and so what we're
always trying to get across is that by taking care of the
upper region of the laguna here in Cotati, we can have
a much bigger impact all the way downstream."

The Critters also want to encourage an appreciation
of Cotati's creeks and creekside vegetation and the
beautiful natural resource with families, neighbors and
the community by organizing Creek Stewardship
Days from October through May to plant native trees,
shrubs and plants and to remove invasive species.
To date as many as 4,000 volunteers over the years
have planted and maintained over 2,000 native trees
and shrubs, and thousands of native grasses, sedges,
and rushes alongside a section
of the Laguna de Santa Rosa
channel that runs through
Cotati and part of Rohnert
Park Creek. Stewardship Days
may involve planting native
trees and shrubs, removing
invasive plants, removing
trash, propagating plants in the nursery, and pruning,
mulching, weeding, and other supportive tasks as
needed. Trash Pick Up events are held twice a year,
usually in October and April, to remove trash from the
Laguna de Santa Rosa channel before it gets washed
downstream into the heart of the laguna, the Russian
River and the Pacific Ocean.
Cotati Creek Critters also organize group stewardship
days for specific groups of 15 or more and offer a
presentation on the history, background, and purpose
of its projects, to any interested group or class. They
also run an internship program offering community
involvement opportunities for students.

MUSIC ALL YEAR ROUND
Music & live events in Cotati
Cotati is a town rich with music and has long been a big
part of northern California cultural heritage. Along with its share of renowned studios and legendary clubs like
the Cotati Cabaret and Inn at the Beginning over the
years, Cotati is well-known for longtime music events
like the jazz and accordion festivals. But musical
events of all kinds, great and small, contemporary and
classical, country and western take place in Cotati all
year around.
The much-anticipated opening of the Green Music
Center in September will bring world class musicians
to the neighborhood, both classical and contemporary,
from Lang Lang and Yo Yo Ma to Alison Krauss
and Union Station The schedule through next year
includes the likes of Chucho Valdés, Joyce DiDonato,
Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Of course the Green
Center will also be a great new resource and stage for
SSU music students - the orchestras and many other
classical ensembles on campus. Most of these events
on campus venues are free. [For SSU events, please
see page 23]
Festival director Andre' Morrow says they always hire
local bands, this year's headliners being The One
World Latin Band and Bautista. "The bands in the park
this year will all be jazz bands, some Latin jazz and
fusion," Morrow told us. "It's a really nice crowd that we
attract, and people get to relax in the park, listening to

again this year by the 22nd Annual Cotati Accordion
Festival which will take place Saturday and Sunday,

dancing, jam sessions and bands from all around the
world playing everything from polka to conjunto. Running
9:30 - 8:30 both days, opening with an accordion
parade, the event is run by the non-profit Cotati
Accordion Festival organization, dedicated to providing

The 32nd Annual Cotati Jazz Festival takes place

music and eating food. There are another six or seven
venues where they can go see the bands they want to
hear."
There are always a good number of clubs and bars in
Cotati with a variety of live music most nights of the
week. If you just want to go out dancing or listen to the
jukebox, there are choices too. Friar Tucks Pub is a
great bar for dancing, especially the infamous Cotati
crawl and where every night is karaoke night, and
Spancky’s too is a downtown favorite. The Cotati Yacht
Club & Saloon can also get busy, and the Eight Ball is
a good place to kick back.
Everybody is welcome to informally join in and march
in the parade or register to be in the parade for the
chance to win cash prizes. The parade gets moving
at 10am and participants will be judged in a variety of
categories and prizes will be awarded at the festival in
the park. Parade participants are encouraged to design
costumes, carts, floats, wagons, bikes, or strollers, to
reflect on the “Under the Sea” the theme. Mermaids,
seahorses, fish, and a variety of other sea creatures
are anticipated to participate in this year’s parade! The
parade ends at La Plaza Park, “The Hub of Sonoma
County”, and the festival continue from 11am to 3pm.
Fiz-Nik Rick will continue as the Master of Ceremonies
Another big day in town is the Cotati Kid's Day Parade,
a free family fun event, now in its 20th year, this year
scheduled for Saturday, July 14th in La Plaza Park. The
theme this year is “Under the Sea”. The day begins with
a free pancake breakfast sponsored by the Church of
the Oaks from 7am to 10am. Bring family, friends and
an appetite and enter or cheer on the contestants in the
Flap Flop Contest! Church of the Oaks is located at the
corner of West Sierra and Page Street in Cotati. Once
you’re filled up on pancakes, take a load off between
West Sierra and Old Redwood Highway as a spectator,
or burn some calories and join the parade procession!
The parade participants line up at 9am in front of Cotati
City Hall.

And although it’s not actually musical per se, one of
the coolest book stores left in the North Bay is North

coffee houses too like Cotati Coffee, Johnny’s Java,
Starbuck's and Peet's.

Beyond the live events, there is music in the air
everywhere you look in Cotati. Local studios like
Prairie Sun and Zone Recording are going strong.
Loud & Clear Music continues where Zone Music
left off as local purveyor of musical instruments with
some of Zone’s former employees on hand. Located
in the middle of the regional breadbasket, good food
is also big in Cotati, and as we know food and music
go so well together. Oliver's Market is promoting a new
CD of local musicians (see page 15) and even at the
Farmers’ Market in La Plaza Park, every Thursday from
June to September, you'll find not only the best fresh
vegetables and fruit, but some great live music too.
Wishing to save a few bucks on
commission, some adventurous sellers
embark on the home selling task without
an agent. You’ve heard the usual
arguments against doing this — the
paperwork hassle, the improper pricing,
the legal pitfalls — so I will not talk about
those here. Instead, here are the drawbacks
of a different kind that are almost always
overlooked — the emotional ones.
That Uncomfortable Feeling
To some people selling is second nature
— they easily strike up conversations with
perfect strangers and quickly earn
their trust and their business.
However, for a larger majority,
tr ying to sell something to a
stranger feels uncomfortable. The
“uncomfortableness” is amplified
if a person has an emotional
attachment to the thing being
sold (as is the case with homes).
Hearing
negative
comments about one’s
home and facing
rejection repeatedly is a
dreadful experience for many solo-sellers.
Those who work with an agent have it
easy. A good agent will gently provide advice
on what improvements are needed and how
to best stage the home for showings. The
agent handles the showings, answers the
objections of potential buyers, and is trained
to handle the “salesy” part of guiding
someone from “just looking” to “I want to
make an offer.” The seller just sits, smiles,
and waits for a signed offer to arrive.
Anxiety
As you already know, selling a home
involves lots of paperwork, much of it
mandated by law. Forget something, and
you may find yourself in legal hot water.
For-Sale-By-Owners may be fairly certain
that they have dotted all the “i”s and
crossed all the “t”s, but many will still
worry: “Did I provide all of the disclosures?
Was everything done properly?” This
creates anxiety. Then, after the sale, the
unexpected call: “Hi, this is the buyer.
There’s water in the basement and this was
not disclosed to me before the purchase.”
The seller stutters: “I was not aware of
that...” “We’ll see,” replies the buyer, “I’ll
have someone contact you soon.” Now
the seller has to sweat and worry and
agonize and lose sleep waiting for
that call from “someone” whose
name is probably followed by
“ESQ.” Don’t get me wrong —
many solo sellers complete their
transactions without any legal
problems. But just thinking, “Am
I forgetting something” creates
unnecessary anxiety.
How does working with an
agent alleviate this? An agent
is trained in all the different
legal aspects of selling a home. Not only
does this minimize the chances of
something going wrong, but it also gives
the seller added peace of mind — one less
thing to worry about. Does this mean
that agents are perfect and never make
mistakes? No, but they have Errors and
Omissions Insurance if something should
go wrong. Hey, even more peace of mind!
As winter approaches, the real estate
market will likely slow down. That’s
when it becomes especially important
to have a skilled Realtor on your side.
If you are buying, a knowledgeable
Realtor will know where to find good
homes, even if there are fewer homes
on the market. If you are selling, a
good agent will know how to attract
qualified buyers, even if fewer people
are looking. Are you thinking of
buying or selling soon? If so, give me
a call or send me an e-mail today, and
let’s work together. I offer thorough
knowledge of the local market, friendly
service, and no sales pressure.
