This guide seeks to present some aspects related to the richness of sacred art in Aljarafe, centering on the elements of patrimonial interest, its brotherhoods, its history and that of the represented municipalities. Passional cycle has its own expressions in Aljarafe and that makes this region special for our visitors. To begin with, nothing better than Aljarafe’s Way of the Cross which takes place in Santiponce, the night of the first Lent Saturday and which has been declared as Andalusian National Interest Touristic Feast. Another outstanding moment is the one lived with the Soledad from Huévar Brotherhood, where more than a hundred women, dressed with mantilla, accompany a reclining Christ and his Mother. We should not forget the liturgical play developed in Coria del Río between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, which ends up with the well-kown “Abrazos” of Resurrected Christ and Virgin of Solitude. A distinctive feature of this region is the importance conceded to the celebration of Resurrection. It is shown in the “Carreritas” in Pilas, the “Vuelta” in Castilleja de la Cuesta, “Custodias” processions in Espartinas and Olivares or “Purecita” and “Niño de Dios” in Benacazón. These and other peculiarities make Aljarafe an attractive destiny during its Holy Week and they invite us to approach other ways of representing Passion within religious cycle from a festive, cultural and religious point of view. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy the richness of Aljarafe´s cultural patrimony, that patrimony linked to churches, chapels and monasteries, its gastronomic and environmental richness and also its high ethnological and aesthetic values. The region’s great history has left an influence in its landscape. We can highlight the group of Mudéjar churches in the region with its artistic value which are an attraction by themselves. Thus, in municipalities as Sanlúcar la Mayor, Aznalcázar or Benacazón, we can find works in bricks and interlacing patterns typical of this kind of architecture. To conclude, we have chosen to stress the strong tradition in the making of religious images in this region, which presents numerous artistic jewels within its patrimony. All this information is contained in the Guide you have in your hands. Each double page is dedicated to one municipality. Central text develops main contents, while at the sides you will find useful indications about the most interesting places to visit (on the left) and contact information, schedules and visit conditions (on the right). Furthermore, at the end of the guide, there is additional information, a directory, a holidays calendar and a localization map. Passion for Aljarafe is the result of an ambitious project which is completed with the creation of a database with more than 300 entries and the creation of a Geographical Information System which will help future management of our patrimony. This hard work has required collaboration of those Council Halls adhered to the program, and also of several Brotherhoods, which have kindly opened their doors to us. To all of them, thanks a lot for their interest and collaboration. Aznalcáazar 1 Where to go? ~ St Paul Church ~ Vera Cruz Chapel ~ Guadiamar Visitor Center ~ Guadiamar Green Corridor ~ Buitrago’s Botanical Garden ~ Doñana Natural and National Park 2 Aznalcázar, located between Aljarafe and Rocío Marshes in one of the hills above Guadiamar valley, has in its surroundings a great environmental and patrimonial wealth. Among urban elements we can highlight Casa Grande, Pescadería Arch and the walls. Casa Grande, (the current Council Hall) built in s. XVII, shows the traditional structure with rooms organized in two floors around the central courtyard. Pescadería Arch, of Almohade origin (s XII), was conceived as one of the doors in this town´s walls, with a defensive aim. Its original structure was of a bend access, although it was replaced later by the direct access it currently has. In the 18th century, an upper floor was added with the aim of making it a grain warehouse. The so-called “Roman Bridge” can be seen from town outskirts. Today, only five of the fourteen archs which cross Guadiamar remains. Also, next to the river, we can find Fuente Vieja 7 , a construction from the 18th century, a clear example of Andalusian civil baroque. It is equally interesting to get to know the rich environmental patrimony in the surroundings of this village with zones such as Pine Forests at Aznalcázar, Green Corridor at Guadiamar River 4 , the Botanical Garden in Buitrago and we should not forget the nearby Doñana Natural and National Park. 8 Vera Cruz Brotherhood 3 8 of the Stmo Cristo of the Vera Cruz, Ntra Sra of the Encarnación and St María Magdalena, with its see at Vera Cruz chapel. This brotherhood was founded in 1538 and it does its penitence station on Maundy Thursday. Christ’s sculpture dates from 17th century and Passion for Aljarafe 6 Aznalcázar 5 6 7 4 Useful information St Paul Church 5 (End of 14th century or beginning of the15th century) is a clear instance of sevillian mudéjar style). It has three sections separated by cruciform pillars 2 , the headwall decorated with 16th and 17th century tiles. It can be highlighted because of its rich latticework decoration 1 . The tower is exempt, and that is the reason why some researchers defend its past as the minaret of an ancient mosque. The first body of the tower appears in mudéjar style, although the bell tower was built in the 13th century, as Antigua Virgin tiles, which next to lateral door, indicate us. On the inside, we can find Baby Jesus and St Joseph images, ascribed to Martínez Montañés, St Pablo Christ 6 , a 17th century sculpture and the painting called “Crucified Christ” by Zurbarán’s workshop. Titular images were painted by Antonio Castillo Lastrucci, and these images replaced the original ones by Martínez Montañés, which disappeared in a fire in 1932. The pallium and cloak in Mª Stma de las Angustias are of great interest. Both works, by sevillian embroiderer Juan Manuel Rodríguez Ojeda, date from between 1924 and 1926. 3 Virgin’s from 18th century, both by unknown authors. Its chapel exposes a unique document: The bull known as “Vivae Vocis Oráculo” issued by Pope Paul III in 1536, in which a series of common privileges are conceded to Vera Cruz Brotherhoods. Passion for Aljarafe 7 Aznalcázar Benacazóon 1 Where to go? ~ Santa Mª de las Nieves Chapel ~ Vera Cruz Chapel ~ Soledad Chapel ~ Gelo Chapel ~ Castilleja de Talhara’s Chapel ~ Cárcava Viewpoint Santa María de las Nieves Church 1 was originally built in mudéjar style, with just one section. From this moment (15th century) the headwall is yet preserved, known as “Torre Mocha”. Later on, the church underwent various reforms, as the addings of a second section (17th century), facades and tower (18th century). On the inside, we can highlight the sacramental chapel altarpiece, by Martínez Montañez workshop (17th century), and Christ image (15th cent). Benacazón’s Rocío Brotherhood has its see at this church. Vera Cruz y María Santísima de los Dolores Brotherhood, with see at Vera Cruz chapel, was founded in 1511. A little bit later, it built the Blood’s Hospital, thus becoming a “blood” brotherhood. Each Maundy Thursday, this Brotherhood performed its penitence station making a distinction between “light” and “blood” brothers, who whipped themselves and whose wounds were cured at the same hospital 2 . This was an usual practice in Andalusian Holy Week until it was abolished in the 18th century. Vera Cruz Christ image is an anonymous 16th century sculpture with Renaissance aesthetics whereas Dolores Virgin 4 is an 18th century work, ascribed to Cristóbal Ramos. Brotherhood of Mary’s Resurrection and Purity, Holy Burial and María Stma. de la Soledad, with see at Soledad Chapel, has its origin in 1584. Among their images, Christ can be highlighted. It is an 2 2 Vera Cruz Chapel Maundy Thursday • 5 Cárcava’s viewpoint located at the urban area and offering spectacular views above the Protected Guadiamar Landscape • 6 Gelo Chapel Parish church of the original group of people next to Gelo Estate. Built at the beginning of the 15th century in mudéjar style, it has undergone numerous reforms. Concerning the three section basilica-type floor plan with brick predominance and wood ceiling, we can highlight exterior pictorial decoration. Main Passion for Aljarafe 8 Benacazón 5 6 7 4 Useful information anonymous and articulated 16th century work which, during the year, receives cult as crucified, but it processes as Recumbent Christ. Each Good Friday, the Brotherhood is represented at crucifixion square, Christ descending and transfered to sepulcher, accompanied by the 40 hours sermon. This tradition, lost at the beginning of the 20th century, was recovered in 1995, but now it takes place on a Holy Monday inside the chapel. The sculpture of Christ Resurrected disappeared during French invasion and nowadays, every Easter Sunday, Inmaculada, known as “Pureza de María” (“Purity of Maria” o “Purecita”, y Niño Jesús (“Baby Jesus”) o “Niño de Dios” (“Baby of God”) is taken on the shoulders of Brotherhood’s children in a festive environment. Previously, every Holy Sabbath Baby Jesus is transferred to the church in a multitudinous act, where Benacazón inhabitants sing and dance “sevillanas” showing joy for the announcement of Christ’s Resurrection. In ruin state after French invasion. The cross tombstone located opposite the chapel speaks to us about Talhara town foundation in 1369. At the end of the 19th century, there was an attempt to restore it using neo-mudéjar style. Passion for Aljarafe 9 Benacazón Bormujos 1 Where to go? ~ Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación parish church ~ Santa Maria la Real Convent Church ~ Belén Estate 2 Bormujos’ agricultural past has remained reflected in its shield where, on a green background, the silhouette of a golden olive tree is highlighted, yellow as the olive oil obtained from the rich olive groves in Bormujos 4 5 . This rural economy is seen reflected in the numerous estates which, built in 16th and 17 th century, still remain today: Belén, La Peregrina, Marchalomar, Santo Cristo de la Mata or Valencinilla del Hoyo 6 . Among them, Santo Cristo de la Mata estate stands out. It receives its name from the image venerated in it and which, according to tradition, appeared at the end of the 17th in one of the wells inside the estate. In spite of the increasing prominence of this town as a nearby residential zone for people working in the capital, the locality still preserve its own historical flavour. It appears in Alfonso X’s “repartimiento” (distribution) when Seville is taken in the mid of 13th century, together with 2 other farmhouses conceded to 200 nobelmen knights acknowledging the service provided by his father Fernando III in 1248 while Seville occupation. Bormujos remained the Guzmán family property in the beginning of the 18th until the 19th century . The main patrimonial element in Bormujos is Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación parish church Belén Estate 7 preserves part of its old oil mill, the press and the wine cellar. Its facade with its round arc, of neoclassical aspect, is completed with merlons, on which one them a sun clock is situated; in the center, a tile representing St Anthony with Baby Jesus in his arms. Nowadays the estate is owned by the council hall. • Pedro Silva, an 18th century sevillian arquitect who became one of the Passion for Aljarafe 10 Bormujos 5 6 7 4 Useful information (18th Century) 1 . It is a typical church with the typical hall floor plan, three sections and an “alfarje” (type of wooden latticework ceiling) cover. It is ascribed to Pedro de Silva, being the main facade belfry one of the most beautiful in Aljarafe. On the inside, the major retable, dedicated to the Annunciation and Trinity Dogma stands out and also those retables on the left lateral section. Two images of Inmaculada, those of San Antonio de Padua, Santo Domingo and San Cayetano and especially, the group of sculptures known as “St Joseph with the baby” are of a high quality. Encarnación Parish Church Plaza de la Iglesia, s/n Visits arranged. 955 724 481 Belén Estate C / Montesierra Cultural Center C/ La Atarazana s/n 955 72 44 71 [email protected] At this temple, the Brotherhood called Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz y María Santísima de los Dolores, founded in the mid of the 14th century, has its see. Christ’s image 2 is an anonymous sculpture from the mid of the 17th century and is situated within sevillian baroque school. Until 1994, the Christ processed on brothers’ shoulders but, since 1995, it performs penitence station in a float. The image of the Virgin of Dolores, is an anonymous sculpture of the 19th century. The sacred art collection in Santa María la Real Convent 3 is interesting. This temple was inaugurated in 1992 but it has several 17th century baroque retables inside as well as some outstanding images, as the one of Christ of “Atribulaciones”, work belonging to the 16th century. 3 most renowned architects in his time. Major master at the archbishopric building works, his work is known due to parish churches as Santiago, in Alcalá de Guadaira, Las Cabezas de San Juan or Capilla del Sagrario inside Santiago parish church in Écija. Passion for Aljarafe 11 Bormujos Castilleja de la Cuesta 1 Where to go? ~ Santiago Apostle parish church ~ La Inmaculada Concepción parish church ~ Brotherhood House – Santiago Brotherhood Museum ~ Brotherhood House – Gran Poder Brotherhood Museum “Vuelta” Festival on Easter Sunday (declared as National Interest Touristic Festival in Andalusia) adds a special nuance to Castilleja de la Cuesta Holy Week. It is a Festival staged by Santiago “de la Plaza” brotherhood and that of Gran Poder or “de la Calle Real” 1 . That day, both “reds” from la Plaza Brotherhood and “light blues” from Calle Real Brotherhood, go on a pilgrimage with their “Simpecados” through village streets, surrounded by the festive environment of a procession with horsemen, flamenco women and music. It is a tradition to take La Plaza Brotherhood’s “Simpecado” in silver cart 3 , whereas the one belonging to Calle Real Brotherhood is taken by horses. After “Simpecado” procession, at early afternoon, each Brotherhood comes back to their temple to conclude Holy Week with the holder’s procession in glory float. In addition, Calle Real Brotherhood carries out the so-called “Vuelta on Maundy Thursday” presided by “Simpecado” where “armaos” (men dressed as romans), women with “mantilla” and Nazarene children with their masks taken out. Later on, “Armaos” accompany Christ during the “Good Friday Madrugada” (Night parades). 8 2 Ntra. Sra de Guía Chapel: 6 Of medieval origin, its current name derives from the tradition of a Marian apparition in 1525. On the inside, fresco paintings covering the whole central section vault and presbytery 4 call our attention. At the presbyterium we also find the major, neogothic stable. The Ntro Padre Jesús de los Remedios y Ntra Sra de la Soledad Brotherhood has its see at this parish church, founded by Santiago Order and which carries out its penitence station on Good Friday. Ntro Padre Jesús image is a work by Marcelino Roldán, from the beginning of the 18th century, whereas Ntra Sra. de la Soledad is an anonymous 16th century sculpture. Inmaculada Concepción church 5 was born as a chapel in the 15th century, coming to its present parish church category in 1615 which is preserved until today. It presents just one section covered by a saddle roof with a spherical vault limited by four vertical planes at the headwall. From its sacred art collection, paintings by Juan de Roelas (beginnings of the 17th century) stand out. This parish church is the see for Ntro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder and María Stma de los Dolores Brotherhood, founded by Franciscans in 1487. Gran Poder image 8 is ascribed to Francisco Antonio Gijón’s circle, whereas Dolores Virgin is ascribed to Pedro Roldán. Sra. de la Estrella parish church ~ Museum of the Autonomy ~ House- Museum Blas Infante ~ San Juan Bautista Chapel ~ Guadalquivir River Coria del Río Holy Week is one of the biggest and most popular in Aljarafe. It has processions every single day of the week, completing all Passion stages in a chronological manner. It is intensely experienced by neighbors and members of Brotherhoods. Every Palm Sunday, Stmo Cristo de la Salud en su entrada en Jerusalén Brotherhood, founded in 1998, parades from Ntra. Sra. de la Estrella parish church 1 , Christ image is by Darío Fernández (2001). From a chapel in the same parish church, Jesús Cautivo y Ntra. Sra. del Dulce Nombre de María Brotherhood, founded in 1983, parades. Captive 5 carving was carried out and restored by Fernando Castejón in 1990. This same author made the Virgin image in 1986. From St Joseph parish church, Ntro Padre Jesús de la Paz y Mª Stma de Gracia y Esperanza parish church group parades. Both images are also works by Castejón. On Holy Wednesday, Ntro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder y Ntra Sra. del Carmen Brotherhood parades. Both images are works by sevillian Francisco Buiza (1960 decade). It can be highlighted that this Virgin also parades on Carmen day (July 16th), and then she is taken through the waters of Guadalquivir River. 2 Every year, on Maundy Thursday from the chapel of San Juan Bautista la Hdad. del Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz 2 y Purísima Concepción San Juan Baptista Chapel 3 The chapel was erected between 14th and 15th century, in mudéjar gothic style. The presbytery was built in the 16th century, while the Christ chapel and the belfry are baroque works of the 18th century • Ntra. Three sections separated by Tuscan columns • 7 You Passion for Aljarafe 14 Coria del Río 5 6 7 4 de María Stma, the Brotherhood known as Cerro Brotherhood, founded in the 16th century, parades. Vera Cruz Christ is considered as the oldest processional Christ in the whole Seville province (1500, ascribed to Gil de Siloé). Virgin sculpture is a work by Rafael Barbero Medina from Granada (1953). Between Good Friday and Easter Sunday Holy Burial Brotherhood, Resurrected Christ and Soledad Virgin march, founded in the 16th century by sailors and fishermen. This brotherhood keeps representing part of an ancient and traditional allegorical religious play that is started with the procession of both Recumbent Virgin and Christ. When reaching the parish church, Jesus image stays there whereas the Virgin comes back to her chapel to stand alone. At sunrise, the Virgin goes to church in a Glory float, with no canopy and with crimson instead of black cloak. There, a resurrected Christ opens the doors for her, merging both images in a simulated embrace 4 . The Recumbent Christ is a work by Luis Peyré (20th century) whereas Resurrected Christ is a work by Francisco Buiza. Soledad Virgin 6 is an anonymous work dated at the end of the 16th or at the beginning of the 17th century. It seems that, in his return, some of his companions decided to stay in Coria and the proof for that is that more than six hundred people from Coria keep the surname “Japón” (Japan). Passion for Aljarafe 15 Coria del Río Espartinas 1 Where to go? ~ Asunción Church ~ San Rafael Estate. House of the Nuns ~ Imagery Museum of Ntra Sra de los Remedios Estate In Espartinas’ patrimony we can highlight Asunción parish church 2 , a building of Mudéjar origin, enlarged in the 18th century by Diego Antonio Díaz (architect who projected archbishop’s palaces in Umbrete and Seville). The bell tower dates from that same Century, by Pedro de Silva. On the inside we find the major stable, in baroque style with “rococo” and neo-gothic reforms, where Inmaculada’s image stands out (18th century). The brotherhood of the Stmo Cristo de la Sangre y Mª Stma. de los Dolores has its see in this church. The Brotherhood first rules date from 1726 although the corporation, as it is today, is first organized in 1938 thanks to the impulse given by Franciscans of the Loreto Monastery. From that time, current images were associated to the Brotherhood. Those images belonged to the Vera Cruz Brotherhood. Christ is an anonymous sculpture of unknown date, while the Virgin, also anonymous, dates from the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th. The Brotherhood performs its penitence station every Holy Tuesday but it also plays a leading role on Easter Sunday, parading a 17th century monstrance along with Dolores Virgin 4 that, this way, is able to walk Espartina’s streets twice every Holy Week. The Morning Good Friday Way of the Cross is quite interesting. In it, brothers take Blood Christ on their shoulders through village streets. 2 5 Popularly known as Guardiola Estate, it belonged to Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios sevillian Convent throughout the 18th century. Nowadays it is owned by Espartinas Council Hall. The Baroque facade with the round arch and the vegetable garden with central big wheel calls our attention. It preserves the mill with a balance tower• 7 Torre Mocha. In Loreto Monastery we find this military Passion for Aljarafe 16 Espartinas 5 7 4 6 8 Useful information Espartina’s link with the making of religious images has led to develop diverse initiatives at the village such as the creation of a Imagery Research and Development Center (CIDI) or the holding of the biannual Religious Sculptures National Exposition where Spanish makers of religious images show their works and techniques. All that ends up with the opening of the Imagery Didactic Museum in Los Remedios Estate 5 in which the creative process involved in sculpting and modeling and the history of sevillian school are available for a better understanding. To conclude, we can highlight Santa María de Loreto Monastery 1 3 , Aljarafe’s patron saint. It is widely known that Franciscans built it during the first half of the 16th century, under dedication to Loreto Virgin. Current building is dated from 17th century, reaching our time in a good state of preservation. The church shows a latin cross plan in just one section, covered by a barrel vault. The most interesting large room due to its artistic and religious content gives onto the cloister: San Francisco Solano chapel where we find a great quality ivory crucifix, of Spanish Philippine origin. We also find a great sacred art sample dating from the 17th and 18th, in which a rich silverwork and goldsmithing collection stands out. Asunción Church Avda. Passion for Aljarafe 17 Espartinas Gines 1 Where to go? ~ Belén Virgin Church ~ Santa Rosalía Chapel ~ Virgen del Rocío Brotherhood House This village stands out thanks to its great Rocíorelated tradition, but also we can find other interesting aspects which are linked to its cultural patrimony. At Spain Square we find Virgen de Belén parish church (16th century) 1 of late mudéjar style, reformed in the 18th century due to its bad preservation state. It is a three section kneading trough-covered temple which is separated by columns supporting rounded archs. It has 2 chapels added to the main body, with half-orange domes. Its double body tower stands out, ended in spire with tiles, dated in 1711, this is the date when restoration works were probably finished. On the inside, the major altar retable stands out 4 , in rococo style and it is presided by Belén Virgin image (18th century) to which San Joaquín, San José, Santa Ana and Santa Teresa sculptures accompany. On the right section, we find a San Ginés sculpture, the village patron, in whose honor a procession is celebrated in September. On the opposite section, Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario presides a beautiful retable. The “Guadalupe virgin” canvas (1716), which can be observed on the right side of the presbitery and the oil painting “Santa Catalina’s burial”, from Zurbarán’s school deserve special attention. In the Belén virgin parish church has its see the Stmo Cristo de la Vera Cruz y Ntra Sra de 2 6 Monument to Rocío Virgin at Juan de Dios Soto walk. It was erected in 1978 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Rocío Brotherhood in Gines foundation • Estates In the last years Gines is recovering some of its several estates, a part of its rich patrimony. The Stmo Vera Cruz Christi 2 is an anonymous 16th century sculpture, whereas the Dolores Virgin 5 image was done by Juan de Astorga in 1816. The fire that in 1990 affected the high altar provoked a great harm on the titular images, especially on that of the Dolorosa, which had to be restored by Juan Manuel Miñarro. We have here a three section temple with a vaulted cover that becomes star dome in the presbytery. We can stand out the Side Chapel (17th Century) and Antigua Virgin Chapel (16th century) founded by the Guzmans whose shield appears at baseboard tiles and forge grille of the Chapel. The major retable, of neo-classical style, is presided by Asunción Virgin (18th century). This parish church is the see for four penitence brotherhoods in Huévar. It is a building composed of a changing room or access hall plus three rooms (cold, warm and hot). Today we have warm room preserved. Its vault introduces bright stars which allowed light entrance 4 . On the outside, gardens take in concerts and other cultural activities. The Monastery was founded by D Alonso Pérez Guzmán and his wife Dª María Alonso Coronel in 1301. It was built over a mozárabe mosque, where (according to tradition) San Isidoro de Sevilla had built a school in the 6th century. Later on, San Isidoro’s body rested there until they were taken to León in the 11th century. The monastery was transferred to the Cistercian order until 1431 when they were expelled and replaced by Jerónimos. There are two churches inside the monastery, both with just one section of three stretches and polygonal headwall, covered by cross ribs vaults and geminate windows in the apse. This duality can be explained by the execution of public and private cults (by monks) in the Middle Ages. The cloister 6 has a marked mudéjar character, resorting to brick as construction material and using almohade inspiration elements. Within its sacred art collection we must highlight a Christ dating from the 14th century, the only image allowed at Cistercian temples. The major retable is a work by Martínez Montañés (1609-1613), with the outstanding San Jerónimo Penitente sculpture. Fresco paintings are very interesting, dating from the 15th -18th century. Part of its land belongs to the ambit of Doñana’s Natural Park Surroundings 1 . In its name we can find out part of its history: In the 16th century Villamanrique’s marquisate was created by Felipe II for Sir Álvaro Manrique de Zúñiga and Mrs Blanca Enríquez from whom it receives its name. In 1916 “de la Condesa” was added in honour of París Countess Isabel Francisca de Orleans y Borbón. Montpensier’s footstep is still very visible today in the municipality, fundamentally through The Royal Palace 2 , situated next to the Santa María Magdalena Church.. Built in the mid 19th century, it is a french rococó style building in which great gardens stand out combining ornamental plants with orange trees and other fruit trees. It has been declared as Cultural Interest Items. However, the most characteristic image in Villamanrique is provided by Santa María Magadalena Church 3 which is built in the ground where the mudéjar church used to be, destroyed during the Lisabon earthquake in 1755. The construction of this building was financed by Montpensier Dukes and was finished in the mid 19th century. 2 Santa María Magdalena Church 3 is a neoclassical temple, open to the outside with three facades, Lost Traditions Several traditions related to Holy Week have been lost in our days, as Holy Burial and Soledad Virgin processions, the staging of Christ Descent during the 7 words sermon, the procession on shoulders of María Magdalena on Easter Sunday to find Convent Church Baby Jesus, or the so-called “saeta manriqueña” •Vera Cruz Brotherhood 6 Vera Cruz Brotherhood Insignia by Juan Ruíz 1766 • Rocío Virgin Monument 7 It is situated at the “Boyal Meadow”, wide entertainment Passion for Aljarafe 38 Villamanrique de laCondesa 5 4 7 6 among which the one situated at the foot stands out. On the inside, the major retable 5 stands out coming from the disappeared Santa María de Gracia Franciscan convent which took place in the municipality. In its elaboration, between 1612 and 1619, we count Juan de Oviedo, Diego López Bueno and Francisco Pacheco, to whom the San José and Inmaculada lateral retables are also ascribed. In the temple, other times’sculptures are also preserved, as those of Juan de Astorga (1777-1849) or María Magdalena by Pedro de Mena (1628-1688). Among the goldsmithing works the reliquary located at the major retable stands out, doned in the 16th by Blanca Enríquez, first Villamanrique marchise. Villamanrique has a special link with Rocío Procession, being one of the first villages which took part in the procession. Passion for Aljarafe 39 Villamanrique de laCondesa Pilgrims in Aljarafe In Aljarafe’s region, as in other Andalusian zones, popular religiousness has favored the appearance of processions, rosarios and pilgrimages that 1 constitute an outstanding Cultural Patrimony. At these Festivals, along with its participants’ religious feeling, there is an unquestionable attractive for those who wish to know this devotion facet better. One of the most famous processions in Aljarafe is the pilgrimage to Rocío’s hamlet which takes place every spring. There are a lot of Rocío Brotherhoods with their see at Aljarafe, but also a lot of Brotherhoods pass by this region in their path to Vado del Quema, a compulsory point when crossing Guadiamar in the way to Villamanrique de la Condesa and the last part of the Way 1 . Along with this pilgrimage to El Rocío, other processions are celebrated during the year in Aljarafe. Among the most outstanding processions we can cite Ntra. Sra. De Loreto 3 , in the Espartinas Municipality. Being the village, Aljarafe and Aviation patron, this celebration calls dozens of people around the monastery with the same name. The Virgin image 6 is taken in hanbarrows by members of the Brotherhood and performs a procession through the country-side which is extended until the evening. The floral offering done by the Air Army is specially singular. At night, the Brotherhood keeps on the celebration in the village, where “sevillanas”singing and dancing close the day. In the middle of September, we can attend San Ginés procession, in Gines. Traditionally, after the “Rosario de la Aurora”, the Passion for Aljarafe 40 2 Romeros en el Aljarafe 5 6 4 image of the saint was taken by a cart drawn by ox from Belén Virgin parish church to eucalyptus field Marchalomar where romeros enjoy a festive and coexistence day 7 . From 1997, Sanlúcar la Mayor performs a procession in the honour of patron San Eustaquio 2 . It processes on September 20th accompanied by Penitence, Glory and Sacramental Brotherhoods, religious associations, Brotherhood General Council and Municipal Corporation. Through the meadow way, they head towards Guadiamar River, reaching “la Herrería” estate where mass is celebrated for pilgrims. San Isidoro del Campo Procession in Santiponce has been recently created. It has its origin in the procession held in the sixties in honor of the patron. The Sunday following April 26th, San Isidoro’s day, the saint sculpture is taken in a cart drawn by ox, accompanied by carts and baby carriages, to a green space 6 kms away from the village heading Valencina. Pilgrim’s mass is hold there, lunch is shared 5 and people come back in the afternoon to enter the parish church when the day is over. Other Aljarafe’s village have also similar celebrations, as Huévar del Aljarafe, with their procession dedicated to María Stma. de la Sangre or Coria del Río, in honour of Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario y San Lucas Evangelista. 3 Passion for Aljarafe 41 Romeros en el Aljarafe 7 Aljarafe’s Environmental Wealth 1 If Aljarafe’s wealth in sacred art and ethnology is very important, it is not less the wealth related to its environmental patrimony and its natural resources. This environmental wealth starts with Guadalquivir river bank and Aljarafe’s cornice, and extends to Doñana, playing an important role Guadiamar valley 4 in the middle. Guadiamar valley is always present as Aljarafe’s defining geographical element. Aznalcázar pine forests – Puebla del Río They are one of the leading resources in Aljarafe’s daily life due to its environmental recreational character. The presence of Sevillian visitors from all parts of the province is usual in holidays. It is a mediterranean landscape situated in an undulating land. In its vegetation stone pines, wild olives, rock roses, holm oaks, cork oaks, myrtles, pilgrims, lentiscos and tree strawberries stand out. Its most characteristic fauna is formed by rabbits, hares, partridges, hoopoes, deer, wild boars and, to a lesser extent, Iberian lynx, a specie in danger of extinction but which popularly identifies this ecosystem. In Benacazón surroundings, we find Cárcava viewpoint 2 , a recreational equipment and a public picnic area. It is a hillock from which a beautiful Guadiamar valley outlook can be enjoyed, the Green Corridor, the Island Gully, Huévar Way, Valdelobos Way (connecting the viewpoint with the Green Corridor). 2 A great part of the Guadiamar Green Corridor 5 1 , born after the catastrophic spillage at Bolidén mine in Aznalcollar Stone Pine 3 The stone pine or pinus pinea is the great leader of the Aljarafe’s hillocks and Doñana’s plains. Typically Mediterranean, it got extended with the Roman and Phoenician expansion. It reaches 30m high and it attains its great robustness in the 500 years it usually lives. Its pyramidal crown becomes rounded at maturity and its seed, the pine kernel, has been very valued in gastronomy from Antiquity • Ripudio Stream 6 Although it has been affected by a strong degradation, Ripudio stream, Passion for Aljarafe 42 Riqueza Ambiental del Aljarafe 5 6 4 Useful information in April 1998, pass through Aljarafe’s region. It is an echologic corridor covering Guadiamar River medium stretch along 40 kms connecting Doñana with Sierra Morena. This project did not only intend to purify pollution provoked by the spillage, but to bring the river back to its usual state before industrialization and intensive exploitation of its territory. The recovering of the river’s fluvial dynamics has been attained, and also the environment and bank landscapes, and everything that formed part of the natural ecosystem of Guadiamar’s meadow. In Guadiamar’s Green Corridor Visitor Center we can find an orientation about the program of our visit and also information about the activities that can be done. Moreover, they show us the meaning and evolution of the Green Corridor, the landscapes and the most important values of the natural and cultural patrimony of the river and its basin. The visitor disposes of three paths: Green Corridor, Las Doblas and Buitrago’s Botanical Garden. This Botanical Garden is presented to us as an environmental education center, so people is informed there, not only about typical fauna and flora of the protected landscape 7 , but also about the whole environment restoration process that has been done.
