Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center
For allergic individuals, the air they breathe and the
environment in which they live may compromise their health
and adversely affect performance at school or work. In the
United States, 20 million people suffer from bronchial asthma
and twice as many suffer from allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
These conditions can affect you, a loved one, or a friend.
The Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center (CAAC) has
been committed for more than 55 years to providing Greater
Charlotte with the highest standard of compassionate and
cost-effective care for all individuals with allergic, asthmatic,
or immune diseases. CAAC has built a reputation for providing all patients state-of-the-art care with priority given to the
diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of complicated allergic and related disorders.
PHYSICIANS
The twelve physicians of CAAC are all certified by the
American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). To
be eligible to achieve this certification, each physician has
completed a residency and board certification in internal
medicine and/or pediatrics, followed by a two- to three-year
fellowship in allergy and clinical immunology. ABAI certification is only granted following successful completion of
an accredited education program, evaluation process, and a
proctored examination. While some doctors may report their
subspecialty as allergy, not all have qualified for certification
by the ABAI—be assured that all CAAC doctors have earned
this distinguished certification.
Our physicians are qualified experts in their field and
serve as a resource for other allergy practices nationwide.
Our physicians are preceptors for medical residents in the
departments of pediatrics, family practice, and internal medicine
at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and Concord. Several are associate/adjunct professors at the University of North
Carolina–Chapel Hill Medical School and UNCC Department of Public Health Sciences.
SERVICES
CAAC offers a full range of diagnostic testing for the
proper evaluation and treatment of patients suffering from
an allergic or related disorder. There are many disorders, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, hives, stinging insect
allergy, medication allergy, food allergy, exercise-induced
bronchospasm, sinusitis, and primary immunodeficiencies
CAAC treats.
At the initial visit, the CAAC physician will take a
detailed medical history from the patient followed by a physical examination. Comprehensive diagnostic testing is then
Special Advertising Section
performed. Asthma evaluation may include the cutting-edge
exhaled nitric oxide test, exercise challenges, and spirometry.
Allergy evaluation may include skin testing to pollen and
inhalant allergens, foods, stinging insect venoms, or selected
medications. Patch testing may be used to diagnose contact
dermatitis. Food and medication challenges are performed
by our specialists. Rhinolaryngoscopy may be performed to
examine the upper airway in close detail. Blood work may be
ordered when necessary.
Once diagnostic testing and evaluation are complete, the
CAAC team determines the optimal treatment options for
each patient. The individualized treatment plan may include
detailed education regarding allergen avoidance measures,
judicious use of medications, and, when applicable, allergy
immunotherapy, which is commonly referred to as allergy
shots. Immunotherapy has been effective in the treatment of
allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and stinging insect allergy.
Desensitization immunotherapy offers patients several advantages: decreased severity of symptoms, reduced need for allergy
medication, prevention of new allergies, and slowing or even
preventing the progression to asthma. Immunotherapy can
ultimately lead to long-term relief of allergy symptoms even
after treatment is discontinued. The CAAC team is involved
in clinical studies of sublingual immunotherapy, where drops
of the allergy vaccine are placed under the tongue, rather than
injected into the arm.
CARE
The CAAC provides ongoing care to more than 20,000
patients annually. Our goal is to provide an improved quality of life for patients. Our physicians understand that
personalizing service for each patient is integral to a successful
treatment plan. A one-size-fits-all treatment plan is not what
we encourage.
We are dedicated to building relationships with patients
that are based on trust, respect, and collaboration. Allergic conditions are often chronic in nature and require the
doctors, nurses, patient, and family members to work
together as a team.
CONVENIENCE
CAAC understands that patient-focused care must also
be convenient. We have eight locations in the surrounding Charlotte area to better serve our patients. Convenient
appointments are available for new patient evaluations,
follow-up care, as well as urgent-care visits for established
patients.

caused by sun exposure. Even occasional use of tanning beds
almost triples the chances of developing skin cancer.
Both Dr. Gilly and Dr. Goslen are well-versed in the
use of cutting-edge lasers to repair sun damage and reduce
the effects of aging for radiant, more youthful skin. With
more than 20 different lasers at their center, a wide variety of
conditions can be successfully treated and properly maintained with their recommended skin care protocols. Age
spots, rosacea, pigmented lesions, and facial veins can be
treated and effectively eliminated with laser treatment. Dr.
Gilly also performs other rejuvenating procedures such

advanced surgical treatments for the face and neck, including eye lifts (blepharoplasty) and liposuction—all under one

Tattoos and laser hair removal for women and men are
amongst the most common procedures. In addition, the
center specializes in the treatment of acne using the Isolaz
device and photodynamic therapy.
Dr. Gilly and Dr. Goslen are recognized as experts in the
field of skin health. From staff and the Charlotte community alike, we salute both of our physicians. We celebrate and

Carolinas Wound Care Center
Millions of Americans suffer from chronic wounds that
resist healing.
Carolinas Wound Care Center is a comprehensive woundcare facility that effectively treats such patients while providing
state-of-the-art care in an outpatient setting. The center, which
is a department of Carolinas Medical Center–Mercy, sees
patients with wounds such as diabetic and venous ulcers,
surgical wounds, radiation tissue damage, traumatic injuries,
and bone and soft tissue infections.
“We see patients who have suffered for months, even years,
with their wounds. They’ve fallen through the medical care
cracks,” says medical director Richard Zollinger. “Our goal is
to get them to heal as quickly as possible.”
Dr. Zollinger is one of three surgeons on staff, along with
an emergency department physician, who specialize in wound
care. The team has the training and education to accurately
diagnose and assess care management of diseases, infections,
nutrition, lifestyle, and pain relating to the wound. “Our team
has the expertise to focus just on the wound and determine
what care pathway will work fastest to aggressively treat it,” says
program director Ronnie O’Regan.
She adds that the center, which has a 94 percent heal rate,
also benefits patients with reduced treatment costs and prevention of future infections, hospitalizations, and limb loss.
The team at Carolinas Wound Care Center follows clinical
practice guidelines in determining care and has access to the latest technology. The medical staff uses evidence-based medicine
and a national database to support decision making. Examples
include laboratory-grown skin equivalents and hyperbaric
oxygen therapy (HBO), which produces a pressurized,
oxygen-rich environment to heal the wound from the inside
out, according to HBO safety director Jack Tench. “Our ability
to provide such a combination of services is great for patients,”
he says.
Dr. Zollinger agrees: “We are committed to a 100 percent
heal rate with each of our patients, treating them like family,
and restoring their quality and participation in life.”
“We see patients who have suffered
for months, even years, with
their wounds. They’ve fallen through
the medical care cracks,”
says medical director Richard Zollinger.

Cenegenics Carolinas
Age is relative. And the fabled fountain of youth may
not be such a myth anymore. Age-management medicine is
redefining the aging process while analyzing and optimizing the
individual biochemistry of each patient.
“Everyone is aging,” says CEO and Chief Medical Officer
Mickey Barber of Cenegenics Carolinas. “But everyone doesn’t
age at the same pace. Our goal is to help patients manage the
aging process so they can look and feel their best both now and
into the future and lead long, productive lives.”
Cenegenics Carolinas provides a unique medical approach
to aging gracefully. The institute, located in Charleston, S.C.,
caters to individual patient needs with extensive diagnostic
testing, athletic performance evaluations, and full-day consultations. Specialists help each patient during the consultation
to develop a personalized plan integrating exercise, nutrition,
vitamin supplementation, and hormone restoration.
“We have the expert knowledge, and we ensure extensive
time is taken with each patient to provide and review individual
recommendations,” Dr. Barber says.
The patients dialogue with nutrition consultants, exercise physiologists, and age-management physicians, who
continually tailor plans over time to patients’ health, fitness, and
long-term goals.
Thorough testing, a collaborative approach, and the
luxury of time spent with each patient effectively promote
“energized aging,” Dr. Barber says. Patient results include
improved energy levels, muscle buildup and loss of body fat,
increased sexual energy, better cognitive funtion, and enhanced
skin tone and elasticity. Such benefits can also have a positive
impact by reducing the risk of developing age-related diseases and
compromised health.
“But everyone doesn’t age at the same
pace. Our goal is to help patients manage
the aging process so they can look and feel
their best both now and into the future
and lead long, productive lives.”
“Chemically, it’s like starting with a beautiful Mercedes
that is running on empty and hasn’t been tuned up or taken
care of in a while,” says Dr. Barber. “We consider everything
and do a thorough tune-up to transform you from the inside
out.”

Such technology offers the advantage of a shorter hospital stay
and quicker recovery for patients.
It is not only their expertise and technology but also
their philosophy of care that consistently earn the practice the
highest patient satisfaction scores on surveys.
“We are able to see most patients within a week to two
weeks from the referral date,” says Dr. McDonald. “We strive to
give patients efficient access to care in a caring, supportive and
comforting environment.”
Efficiency is a priority, and so is excellent delivery of that
care. “I see the patient as a whole,” says Dr. Cantuaria, who
strives to respect the faith and lifestyle of the patient as well
as the helpful role that alternative medicine may have during
treatment. “I attribute our success to our ability to treat the
patient’s body, mind, and soul successfully.”
