SYNOPSIS OF
SPRING AWAKENING
The play ‘Spring Awakening’ is set
in a provincial German township in
the mid 19th century. The children
of this time are raised into strict
homes and schools; each teenager of
the cast is struggling with breaking
free from the conventional lifestyle.
All teenagers want to express their
individuality and sexuality, yet they
are confused and frightened of
judgment or punishment. The casts
feel that they are trapped and turn to
drastic measures to escape.
Throughout the play, rock musical
numbers break out which adds a new
dimension to the play as it allows the
cast to express their struggles in a
different way.

HISTORY OF SPRING AWAKENING
Spring Awakening is a rock musical based on the German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank
Wedekind. With the play being developed and re-developed in the late 1990s by various workshops,
concerts and rewrites it fell into the hands of Duncan Sheik (music of Spring Awakening) and Steven
Sater (Book and Lyrics of Spring Awakening.)
It then premiered on June 15, 2006 at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City. It then
transferred to Broadway opening on December 10th, 2006. The play on Broadway has spawned
several other productions worldwide. The play was awarded many prestigious awards including the
‘Tony Award’ for best musical, best book and best score.
The play has been a roaring success all around the world and has turned a
reused plot line into an explosive new musical.
