The 2014-15 school year with students has officially concluded. Congratulations to the senior class of 2015 – best
wishes as you move forward into the next phase of your life!
We are coming off of a year that had our largest enrollment in
school history which was very positive for the district. We
continually examine ways to enhance our existing structure
and programs while maximizing fiscal responsibility. Each
and every one of us has the power to be a positive difference maker for kids!
Building and Grounds Projects:
• Throughout the summer break, our custodial staff will be working on the
typical projects associated with this time of year. In addition, the following capital projects will be completed: 1) Crack seal the north and
south parking lots, 2) Gym floor sanding/finish/repaint, and 3) Stage
floor sanding/finish.
Technology:
• The technology office will be busy this summer prepping for next school
year. As technology is ever-changing, our high school students will be
receiving new, 1:1 tablet computers to start the 2015-16 school year.
Thank you to the students, faculty, parents, and patrons of the district – a
school district needs the support of everyone and we are blessed to have a
positive school and community partnership.
I look forward to seeing all the smiling faces when we resume school in August. School will start for students on August 20. Until then, enjoy a safe and
fun-filled summer!
Mr. Larson
Dear parents, students, and community members,
According to William Butler Yeats, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”. As another school year closes, my hope is that fire is burning strong in our
students. The combination of our great staff, students, parents, and community allows
for that fire to grow. It truly takes all of us to help mold our young people into future
professions. These are just some of the great reasons why Chester Area has such a fine
education system.
Once again our drama department showed off its talents in the school 3-Act play Lotto Date. The play was
directed by Mrs. Schneider and assisted by Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Van Zanten. This cast had many talented individuals from grades 8th-12th. Leading the charge in their final performance as seniors were
Bailley Schneider, Jade Larson, Maddie Swift, Jacob Campbell, Allison Jungen, and Courtney Stewart.
The middle school golf and track teams finished their seasons strong. Mrs. McDonald guided the golfers
while Mr. O’Connell and Ms. Benson worked with the tracksters. Several middle track records fell during
the season.
New MS Track Records:
Jadon Wages: Discus (89’1”)
Jennilee Hoyer: 800 (2:39.6) and 1600 (6:05.45
Makenna Larson: 100 (13.5)
Chris Mohr: 800 (2:27.15) & 1600 (5:35.88)
Sam McKay: Shot (38’3.25”)
Alex Tammen: Long Jump (16’2.5”)
Riley Philips: 100 Hurdles (16.07)
Chris Mohr, Riley Philips, Alex Tammen, & Aden Baumberger: Boys Medley(1:52.19)
Mr. Peterson and the high school golf team had a tough season with South Dakota’s Mother Nature.
Throughout the poor conditions, golfers continued to improve and grow. At the BEC golf meet, we had
Bailley Schneider, Taylor Martens, Kaleb Eich, and Greg Kahler medal. Two students represented Chester
Area at State this year in Yankton: our lone senior Bailley Schneider and freshman Cole Pry. Congrats
golfers!
The Chester Area Track Team also had to deal with those same South Dakota elements. About 40 students
in 7th-12th grade were involved in the Flyer Track Program this year under head coach Mrs. Larson and assistant coaches Mr. O’Connell, Mrs. Philips, Mr. Bauder and volunteers Mrs. Strom and Mrs. Glover. The
season was full of many successes for the Flyers. The Flyers finished their season with the girls getting 2nd
place and boys 5th place at the state track meet held in Rapid City. Below are the records that were broken
throughout the season as well as the state meet results.

Also qualifying for the state track meet were Molly Heyn, Jennalee Hoyer, Hanna Reiff, Cole Anderson, and
Evan Baumberger. Great job tracksters and coaches!
Throughout the spring our middle school went to several quiz bowl competitions. These students along with
their coach Mrs. Jen Nelson did a great job representing Chester Area. In April, Chester Area hosted a 5th and
6th grade quiz bowl competition where one of our 6th grade teams placed first. Great job students!
On May 16th, Chester Area celebrated its 49th commencement exercise with 23 graduates. Co-Valedictorians
Bailley Schneider and Maddie Swift started the day with excellent speeches preparing their fellow classmates
for the future and the gifts they have to offer. Congratulations class of 2015!!
I hope all of you enjoy your summer. I’m already looking forward towards another great year at Chester Area.

WOW! That was an amazingly quick school year. It seems like yesterday
we were at open house and starting off the year. I guess time flies when
you are having fun and working hard in the classrooms.
I need to take a moment to thank the people that make a huge difference in
our school and in the lives of our students. I would like to give a huge
thank you to our teachers. I truly believe that we have the best teachers in
the world. They go above and beyond their duties to reach every student and to make a
difference in their lives. Thank you support staff: paraprofessionals, secretaries, cooks,
bus drivers, and janitors for all that they do to keep the day-to-day operations of the
school going. Thank you to the parents, grandparents, and guardians of our students, for
without you, all the work done at school would be lost. We see huge strides and gains
from our students because of all your help. Thank you to all of our volunteers, they do a
great deal for our school as well. Lastly, I would like to thank our students. It is your willingness to learn which makes our school a success.
We had some very fun and successful events towards the end of the school year. “Muffins
for Moms” and “Donuts for Dads” were two successful events that were held in the elementary. Both events brought in many parents, grandparents, and guardians to our school.
We look forward to continuing this in the future.
All the classes had a lot of fun at the end of the school year on a number of different field
trips. Our preschool students spent a day at the Children’s’ Museum in Brookings, Kindergarten and first grade went to Great Plains Zoo, second and third grade went to Prairie
Village, and the fourth graders spent the day at the Kirby Science Center. The fifth grade
and I had the pleasure of spending the day at the Gracevale Hutterite Colony. Students
learned about the Hutterite ancestry, culture, and way of life.
Thank you again for a great and wonderful school year. I hope all of you have a fantastic
summer. My hope is that you will use the time to reenergize and make memories with
family. We will see you August 17th for our elementary open house from 5:30-6:30.

Scholarship Awards
The 10th annual Chester American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Junior
Auxiliary member and, in the event there is not a qualifying junior member, an outstanding senior girl. The
award recognizes girls who show commitment to support military personnel and their families, their school,
and community by actions they have taken over their high school career. Sara Heyn, Bailley Schneider.
The Chester Area Community Scholarship is awarded to a senior who maintains a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
and who will be pursuing a degree from a 2- or 4-year institution of higher learning in South Dakota. Cole
Acheson, Bailley Schneider.
The Chester Centennial Scholarship is awarded to a student who is a leader and active member in the community. Cole Acheson, Sara Heyn.
The Chester Education Association Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to a senior who is seeking a four
-year degree in the education field. This scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who embodies the characteristics and enthusiasm of an educator. Sara Heyn.
The Edna Hess Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is pursuing a degree in education.
This scholarship is given in memory of Edna Hess, who taught at a country school in the 1930s. Her selfless
acts, determination, and can-do spirit live on through her family and this scholarship. Sara Heyn, Jade Larson, Madisen Swift.
The First Bank & Trust Scholarship is awarded to seniors in the areas of Canton, Madison, Sioux Falls, and
Watertown whose families are account holders. Bailley Schneider.
The Interstate Telecommunications Cooperative and Dean E. Anderson scholarship is awarded to a
customer of ITC and is considered for his/her school attendance record, activities, honors, community service, and employment history. Cole Acheson.
The Investment Centers of America/Power Promotions Scholarship is sponsored by Tim Schut and
Scott Backus. The recipient of this award must have a 3.0 GPA, attend a 4-year college, be involved in a number of extra-curricular activities, and write a paragraph of how he or she would raise money for a cause that
they are passionate about. Cole Acheson, Bailley Schneider.
Since 2013, the Minnehaha Funeral Home Scholarship has been awarded to one graduating senior from
each of the high schools in our area (Baltic, Chester Area, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Garretson, Tri-Valley). This
year the board of directors voted to expand the scholarship program to Chester Area High School. Minnehaha Funeral Home (Baltic, Colton, Dell Rapids, Garretson) has always prided itself in its community involvement, and these scholarships will continue that focus. In addition to academic information, applicants were
asked to submit an essay on how ethics and morals impacted their daily life. Recipients were chosen by a 5person committee made up from the funeral home’s board of directors. Sara Heyn.
The National Honor Society Scholarship is awarded to a student who is currently a member of the National Honor Society and who best exemplifies high standards in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The recipient must attend a two- or four-year institution next fall. Cole Acheson, Sara Heyn, Bailley
Schneider, Madisen Swift.

academy (non-military, fire, police, etc.) or managerial program. Jacob Campbell.
Regents’ Scholars diplomas are awarded to students who have achieved excellence by completing 4 units
each of English, mathematics and science, 2 units of modern or classical language, 3 units of social studies,
and 1 unit of fine arts. Cole Acheson, Kole Fetters, Bailley Schneider, Madisen Swift.
The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to students with high academics, class rigor, and a
minimum 24 on the ACT. This is a 4-year scholarship worth $6,500 for students staying in SD for continuing
school. Bailley Schneider, Madisen Swift.
The Vision of Our Future Scholarship has no grading factor other than an essay, which the writing style or
fashion will not be included in the grade. People who get ahead in life have the drive and self determination
to challenge the system and themselves and achieve greater things than we thought possible. This scholarship
is for those not afraid to share their vision and do not limit their ideas to any boundaries. Jacob Campbell,
Sara Heyn, Madisen Swift.
The Ashley and Amanda Loban Memorial Scholarship is in remembrance of the sisters, who were killed
in a car accident in Brookings County in 2006. Bailley Schneider.
