Your Bay of Quinte adventure starts here in Belleville, which literally translates to,
“beautiful village.” We are located just off the 401, approximately 1.5 hours east
of Toronto and 45 minutes west of Kingston, on the shores of the Moira River and
the Bay of Quinte in South Eastern Ontario. With access to water and plentiful
greenery, this region of the province is one of the most picturesque in Ontario
and also one of the best-kept secrets.
Belleville boasts many amenities to the Bay of Quinte traveller with a fine
assortment of shops, restaurants, and accommodations. Please read and use
this pocket guide to make the most of your visit here in “the friendly city.”
History of the City of Belleville
In 1789 some fifty United Empire Loyalists settled here in Belleville with the
most notable being Captain John Walden Meyers, a true Renaissance man.
Hardworking and resourceful, he built the first dam in Belleville on the Moira
River, and erected a sawmill, gristmill, and a distillery. Captain Meyers gristmill
drew settlers from as far away as Napanee and Port Hope, and the community
soon became known as Meyers Creek. The Moira River, which winds its way
through Belleville, played an important role in the early stages of the community’s
development as it brought raw lumber inland for the settler to cut and sell. Soon,
Belleville was Upper Canada’s most prosperous community.
In the spring of 1816, the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Sir Francis
Gore, visited the settlement. Inspired by Lady Arabella, the wife of the Lieutenant
Governor, the residents opted to change the name of the community to
“Belleville” in honour of the fair lady.

Belleville & Area Visitor Pocket Guide
From the city’s pioneer settlement past to
the vibrant community of today, Belleville
continues to enjoy a diverse industrial base
along with strong links to agriculture and its
beautiful waterfront, and is a community which
continues to grow and prosper.

or just relaxing - Belleville offers you all the recreational options
you’ll need to ensure the whole family has a great time!
There are more than 15 regional golf courses that provide the enthusiast with
an array of challenging layouts. Our courses have hosted some of Ontario’s
premiere golfing events and yet still offer challenges for everyone from the
champion to the beginner.
The Bay of Quinte offers world class fishing and is the perfect spot for your next
angling adventure. In addition to fantastic walleye fishing there is an abundance
of large and small mouth bass, pike, musky and perch to name a few. Not just
for summer, in winter the Bay transforms into the ideal ice fishing destination!
Broad, sheltered waters make the Bay of Quinte one of Canada’s top sailing
destinations and a prime location for power boating, kayaking and windsurfing.
Residents and visitors can also enjoy rowing and dragon boating on one of the

Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte
Discover our ancestral land along
the shores of the Bay of Quinte.
Experience our rich culture and history.
Amongst the beauty, you will find a historical presence on the
Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. There is a Cairn
in place at the location for the annual reenactment of our Landing, on the shores of
the Bay of Quinte which originally took
place in 1784.
Pow Wow
Another important location to visit is Tsi tkerhitoten Park (jeet-ger-hee-doe-du), meaning
“where the trees are standing.” This park
is where we hold our annual Pow Wow,
but it’s view of the Bay of Quinte and
shade trees make for a great gathering
place for family picnics and other events.
The Pow Wow is taking place on August
10th and 11th, 2013.
Agricultural Fair
The Mohawk Agricultural Fall Fair has been celebrated for over 100
years. It is on the same grounds as the Mohawk Community Centre
where community and visitors gather for many events.
The Mohawk Fair celebrates agriculture, with a
midway, horseshoe tournament, horse pull and
more. The Fall Fair takes place on September
20th, 21st and 22nd, 2013.
To visit Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory,
we are just 10 minutes south from the
Marysville or Shannonville exits of the 401.
