The Stiftungsfest crowd was a bit smaller this year, but it was
still a fun event. The highlights included honoring both Erna and
Ida Schmidtke for all of their hard work in the kitchen. Judy
Diettrich was also honored for being a 50-year member while
Mary Lou Morris was honored for being a 25-year member. We
also sang Happy Birthday to Adam Berger as he celebrated his
50th birthday. Even with all of these exciting happenings, we still
managed to sing the Club song a bit early. Everyone thought the
program was over, but an unexpected speaker extended the
program. All in all, it was a great evening. Klemens Zumbraegel
turned i another great performance as the program’s emcee.
Again thank you to everyone who attended. I hope you had a
The 2nd annual Das Frühling Turnier featured 12 teams. It was
a beautiful night and a good start to the adult recreational soccer
season. Unfortunately, not all of the team members included their
email addresses on the registration forms which made it difficult
to get an honest assessment of the tournament from our postevent survey. I would like to encourage all the teams registering
for these events to include their email addresses so that we can
get feedback and improve these tournaments in the future.
June will be a very busy month for the Fort Wayne Sport Club.
We start off with Germanfest during the week of June 7th. We
can use everyone’s help preparing 500 gallons of German potato
salad on Sunday, June 7th.
Hofbräu N‡ght will then be at the Club on June 9th. We
anticipating another record crowd. Last year, we had 20 teams
for the tournament. This was the maximum number of teams that
we are able to accommodate, so make sure you sign your team
up early … and please include your email addresses. The entry
fee will be $60 again, but for teams that sign up ‘early’ – there
will be a $5 discount. After the tournament, come in to the
Clubhouse for a cold Hofbräu draft and hot, delicious food. You
won’t want to miss this great event! Please don’t forget that we
can still use your help for Germanfest set up and tear down.
On June 27th, we will be hosting our 4th annual Charity
Kickball tournament to raise money for both Turnstone and
TOPSoccer. I hope everyone will help support this worthwhile
event. Remember to wear your Sport Club clothing at these
Finally, we will be conducting a search for a new Club
Treasurer. We are looking for someone with an ‘accounting’
background. The Treasurer is a very important position to the
Club. If you have an interest in filling the treasurer’s position,
please contact the Club Board for a description the position’s
duties. Please submit your nomination to the Board for review
and presentation to the Club membership.
Vol. 88 - Issue 6
We will be celebrating our 84th Anniversary on June 5th!
There is always a super spread of food. I hope to see most of you
at the Club since the weather has gotten warmer. Let's party!
Time is getting very close that we will all be celebrating the
annual Germanfest. It is, indeed, a wonderful beginning to the
summer season, but we still need more volunteers.
If anyone needs a ride to any event, please let me know as we
have several people who have offered transportation. My phone
number is 260-485-6164. See you soon!

4th Annual Charity Kickball Tournament

Germanfest is a joint venture of the Fort Wayne Sport Club, the

German beer and German-style food and music.

servers. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to serve beer or wine
must have a current alcohol permit, a copy of which needs to be
submitted to Club delegates. Gate entry passes for volunteer
workers can also be obtained from Adam or Sean.
For those members who cannot assist during the weekday
activities, your assistance with the set-up and teardown
operations would be greatly appreciated. These functions take
only a few hours with enough volunteers to help. Set–up for

U.S. Women’s National Team
USA are expected to be one of the dominant sides at Canada
2015, and for good reason. Coach Jill Ellis will have a strong
blend of youth and experience at her disposal throughout the
tournament. Former FIFA World Player of the Year Abby
Wambach will likely pair up with Alex Morgan to continue their
partnership that led the Stars and Stripes to the Germany 2011
final. And with the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Sydney Leroux,
Christen Press and Carli Lloyd supporting that strikeforce, goals
can likely come from all over the pitch for the Americans.
Youngsters such as Morgan Brian and FIFA U-20 World Cup
Canada 2014 star Lindsay Horan are on the periphery of a starstudded squad and could get their chance to shine as well.
With goalkeeping sensation Hope Solo set for her third
Women’s World Cup behind a backline led by veteran Rampone,
Becky Sauerbrunn and Ali Krieger, the Americans are certainly a
force to be reckoned with at Canada 2015, especially with the
bitter memory of a second-place finish at Germany 2011 still
fresh in the minds of many in the squad.
USA will start off in Group D vs. Australia on June 8 th, then
play Sweden on June 12th, both in Winnipeg then finish group
play vs. Nigeria in Vancouver on June 16th.

2015 Tournament of Champions

School All-American in Michigan, a four-year starter at Indiana
University, being named Captain and All-American in his senior
year. He signed with the Richmond Kickers of the USISL and
won both the USISL and Open Cup championships. He was then
drafted by the Columbus Crew in the inaugural MLS draft and
was a two-time MLS All-Star during his 9-year career. Mike is
also a member of the Indiana State Soccer Hall of Fame.

the area. The 2015 Midwest Region II Tournament of
Champions will have several divisions including: open, over-30,
under-23 and coed.
