REPORT to the
COMMUNITY
A Legacy of Giving.
2012
WE VOLUNTEER BECAUSE ...
“Volunteering with the children provides the opportunity
to teach a skill and inspire volunteerism to continue
passing along knowledge.”
– Rodney Huffman
Newport News Shipbuilding
“I volunteer with child advocacy because I believe it
is important to help families work through their issues in
order to provide their children with safe, permanent
homes. At the end of the day, I want to know that
I’ve made a positive impact in the life of a child.”

for me and my family, so I do what I can to support
Relay for Life.”

“I have been volunteering with Scouting for 18 years.
… It’s truly rewarding to be able to help shape the lives
of so many young boys and play a role in their maturing
into responsible, well-rounded young men.”

“Just as Newport News shipbuilders take pride in building and maintaining the greatest ships in the world,
they also take great pride in building the communities around them. That pride is demonstrated through
a variety of good deeds all year long. From actively engaging children in science, technology and math
activities, to holding community drives, to supporting the men and women in the armed forces, our
shipbuilders constantly find ways to make a difference. We thank our shipbuilders for making such a
positive impact through their donation of time, talent and resources.”

“This
year Ingalls Shipbuilding will celebrate 75 years of building the best ships. Throughout our history,
Ingalls employees have also dedicated themselves to building the best communities. We know that in
o
order to produce the next generation of shipbuilders, government leaders and military heroes that we must
h
have strong communities, and our employees play an active role in the communities in which we live and
w
work. Throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, San Diego – wherever Ingalls Shipbuilding employees
c
call home – you will find them actively engaged in schools, faith-based organizations, local charities,
n
national organizations like the United Way, USO, American Heart Association, Special Olympics, and
o
other causes where their unique talents and skills can be used to build and sustain, assist and contribute
a
and offer their support. It is not only our purpose to build the finest ships the world has ever seen, it is also
o
our purpose to build the finest communities in which to live, work and raise our families.”

At Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), we believe that when a business operates
in a community, it does much more than provide jobs to citizens and contribute to
the local economy. The company and its employees should become invested and
fully ingrained in the fabric of the society where they live and work.
This is certainly the approach we take at HII, where we are dedicated to being a visible
and active corporate citizen in every community where we do business. It’s been that
way in Newport News, Va., where our Newport News Shipbuilding division has operated
for more than 127 years, and along the Gulf Coast, where our Ingalls Shipbuilding
division is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
As a company and as individuals, our priorities in the communities are as varied and

HII employees are dedicated to helping others and strengthening our communities.
They individually and enthusiastically support hundreds of organizations, lending their
time and talents to make their respective communities places where others want
to come to live and work.
In addition to Hampton Roads and the Gulf Coast, I’m proud that HII and our 37,000
employees are also invested in locations as diverse as Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Groton,
Conn.; Aiken, S.C., and Atlantic Beach, Fla.; San Diego, Calif., and Bremerton, Wash.,
among many others. We even have employees in Kuwait City and Yokosuka, Japan,

This National Volunteer Week (April 21-27), please join me in celebrating HII’s “Legacy
of Giving” and, more importantly, in thanking the many employees who work so hard
at making our communities better. They don’t do what they do for the recognition,
but they certainly deserve it.

is the cornerstone of HII’s corporate citizenship. In 2012, Newport News Shipbuilding
(NNS) continued its highly successful School Tools drive and hosted a number of new
events, including summer internships for teachers of science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM). Meanwhile, Ingalls Shipbuilding hosted its annual Career
Day and awarded more than $70,000 in grants to 19 school districts and organizations
in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. “We greatly appreciate the continued support of
Ingalls Shipbuilding and its generous support of the Pascagoula School District,” said
Wayne Rodolfich, superintendent, Pascagoula School District. “Because of this grant,
students will be exposed to science, math and technology through our WeatherBug

VETERANS & MILITARY
HII builds and maintains ships for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
But our support of the military doesn’t end there. HII was a three-star sponsor
of the annual USO Gala in Washington, D.C., and the two shipbuilding divisions
both supported a number of local USO activities. At Newport News Shipbuilding,
employees in the Machine Shop also participated in “Blue Fridays,” wearing blue
every week to support the troops; the Apprentice School Student Association (ASSA)
hosted its first-ever Veterans Day golf tournament, and the Propeller Club donated
$2,000 to Operation Homefront. At Ingalls Shipbuilding, employees prepared care
packages for military personnel serving overseas, supported Mississippi Gulf Coast
Honor Flight activities and supported Ride 2 Recovery, a group that treats wounded
veterans through cycling activities.
“I firmly believe that we
are blessed, and it is
our duty to help others
where we can because
we never know when
we will need help.
The more you get
involved, the more your
eyes are opened to
what some people are
challenged with every
hour of every day.”

If there is a good cause, there are hundreds of HII employees willing to walk, run,
bike, golf, bowl, etc., to help raise money and awareness for it. In 2012, Newport
News Shipbuilding even hosted a “Wobble” line-dancing event to help raise money
for the United Way. At Ingalls Shipbuilding, the signature event was the first “5K on
the Causeway,” which raised more than $6,500 for Special Olympics. “I think this is
amazing,” said Helen Parish, president and CEO of Special Olympics Mississippi.
“I have given 97
times, and I plan to
continue giving as
long as I am eligible.
Blood is a manmade
gift that only
humans can give to
one another–that is
why I donate.”

“This is the largest number of people to participate in a program like this. With more
than 200 volunteers at our Summer Games and this event today, Ingalls is the most
active sponsor we’ve ever had. And I feel confident it will continue to grow.” HII also
donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Fund after Hurricane
Sandy devastated New York, New Jersey and surrounding areas, and employees
donated close to $10,000 more.

employees participated in clean-up activities from the Lake Pontchartrain Basin
Foundation’s Beach Sweep in Louisiana to the 20th annual De Soto District Cleanup in Mississippi to the Earth Day clean-up at Christopher Newport Park in Virginia.
NNS also collected more than 16,000 pounds of employees’ household hazardous
waste during a special event in September. Three NNS shipbuilders participated in
the Hurricane Sandy relief effort, deploying with Christ in Action to help with the
environmental clean-up in New Jersey. “It was heart-wrenching to see street after
street stacked with the contents of entire houses piled next to the street,” they said.
“They were all thankful that they were safe, that their families were safe and that there
was a group of Virginians who cared enough to come help in their time of need.”

HII employees’ giving spirit intensifies every November and December when they
go out of their way to ensure those less fortunate get to celebrate the holidays.
In addition to food drives sponsored by Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News
Shipbuilding, various departments and employee groups “adopt” families, host
“Angel Trees” and collect Toys for Tots. NNS’ annual employee holiday food drive
resulted in non-perishable food donations weighing over 31,000 pounds and more
than $23,500 in cash for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. “We are thrilled and humbly
appreciate all that Newport News Shipbuilding’s employees do for the Foodbank
3
and the community,” said Loretta Jones-Knauth, chief philanthropy officer for the
Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. “On behalf of the families and individuals who benefit
from their support, we are proud to say thank you to the extraordinary individuals
at the shipyard who are making a real difference in the lives of others and who are
committed partners to the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.”

“For 75 years, Ingalls has been proud to call Mississippi home and
has been a full partner in growing the Jackson County economy.
Our employees have always believed that giving back to our
communities was the right thing to do – and the year 2012 was
no different. Our employees have continually demonstrated that
they believe in the spirit of sharing their time with others through
numerous volunteer activities. Whether it’s with the Boys and
Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society, the military
community or the local library, our employees will always be
there to help lift others up. We are shipbuilders and we volunteer.
It’s what we do.”

“Newport News Shipbuilding
employees have always responded
to the difficult challenges our
community faces. We continue to
live by our volunteer code: ‘Caring
and Sharing.’ We care about our
neighbors, and we share in the efforts
to make our community a better
place to live and raise our families.
I am extremely proud of our recordbreaking giving this year to United
Way and countless other charities.
We don’t just build good ships; we
help build great communities!”
