PacifiC is Olympus trademark for a patented phosphorylcholine (PC) coating applied to fluoroplastic ventilation tubes. PC is a chemical group that occurs in membranes of all human cells and is zwitterionic in nature, meaning that it has both positive and negative charges that are within relatively close proximity. Consequently, PC groups tend to attract and bind large numbers of water molecules tightly around themselves, which makes it energetically unfavorable for other materials to interact. PacifiC is a unique coating that mimics the zwitterionic structure of natural membranes.
