Arrival: Saturday
Your room will be available at 2 p.m. at the hotel "Grauer Baer", which is located within a short distance to
the historical city center. At 5 p.m. a local guide will show you the most important sights. Sightseeing tour
and accommodation from Saturday to Sunday (including breakfast) are already included in the package
price.
1st Day Sunday: Innsbruck – Meran (28 miles)
On Sunday morning, we leave the Tyrolian capital by bus. Heading up through the Inn Valley we traverse
the Reschen Pass into the Upper Vinschgau. There, on the shores of Lake Reschen we mount our bikes.
Our itinerary follows the Roman military road Via Augusta Claudia, frequently travelled by traders and
pilgrims since 2,000 years. It takes us through a bucolic countryside with Romanesque churches, quaint
villages and fruit orchards as far as the eye can see. If the weather permits, we will take a short ride on the
Vinschgau railroad which resumed operation in 2005. We spend the night in the modern hotel "Therme
Meran". The entrance fee to the thermal baths of Meran is included in the tour package.
2nd Day Monday: Meran – Kaltern (25 miles)
Before noon, we take the city bus to Lana and from there bike through Lower Vinschgau into the Überetsch.
Splendid estates, proud castles and busy wine villages line our route to Kaltern, the most famous of all
Southern Tyrolian wine-producing villages. Noble buildings such as the former Laimburger nursing homewhich today houses a wine museum – testify for the wealth the area owes to its wine production. Tonight’s
lodging is the "Goldener Stern" right in the pretty town center of Kaltern. Its interior has been modernized
and provides a pleasant spa area. Before dinner, there will be enough time for a stroll through the village.
3rd Day Tuesday: Kaltern – Trient (16 miles)
In the morning, the steepest funicular railway of Tyrol takes us to the Mendel Pass. It affords a stunning
view of the Southern Tyrolian Dolomites and Überetsch. We leave Southern Tyrol behind and begin our
cycle tour in Trentino with a refreshing descent into the Val di Non. We visit the mysterious and legendary
Hermitage of San Romedio. In the afternoon, we entrust our bikes to the Rotalis bus and take the local train
to Trient. Near the cathedral, in the heart of this time-honored Bishopric, we are welcomed at the "Albergo
Accademia," one of the city’s best hotels. In the evening, a walking tour reveals the city of "Tridentinums"
whose historic "Council of Trient" is responsible for the beautiful Renaissance cityscape.
4th Day Wednesday: Trient – Riva del Garda (34 miles)
In the Etsch valley our route leads pleasantly downhill on a cycle path. After a moderate climb, all of a
sudden Lake Garda appears in front of us. We enjoy the panoramic view before a pleasurable descent
takes us to the lakeshore. In Torbole we have lunch in a very good restaurant at the lakeside (For once, not
the dinner but the lunch is included in the Rotalis tour package). Along the promenade we stroll to our hotel,
the "Bellariva". Since dinner is at your own choice today, we recommend a nice walk to the pretty town of
Riva del Garda, where a wide choice of restaurants awaits you - maybe after a refreshing swim in the lake.
5th Day Thursday: Riva del Garda – Fumane/Valpolicella (30 miles)
We start the day with lovely views of the Lake Garda shoreline during a boat ride to Malcésine, which is
already located in the beautiful Veneto region. After a short walk through the winding streets of Malcésine,
we’ll head to the heights of Monte Baldo in a newly renovated cable car. This mountain barrier between
Lake Garda and the Etsch Valley offers panoramic views which we’ll enjoy on the descent into the Etsch
Valley. (Due to the alpine nature of the area we request your understanding if weather conditions prevent
an ascent of Monte Baldo.) In the afternoon, we’ll roll into the famous wine region of Valpolicella where we’ll
spend a relaxing afternoon at a vineyard. In the vineyards outside of Fumane we’ll be welcomed by the
"Azienda Agricola Corteforte" where we’ll be spoiled with regional culinary and oenological specialties.
6th Day Friday: Fumane/Valpolicella – Mantua (22 miles)
We’ll spend the morning in Verona, exceptionally without our bikes. After a short bus ride, we’ll explore
Romeo and Juliette’s hometown with its boasting splendid squares such as the Piazza Bra near the Roman
arena, or the beautiful medieval market square Piazza delle Erbe. After the city tour, there will be some free
time for shopping before we leave Verona by train. A 20-minute train ride will take us to Peschiera on Lake
Garda once again. From here we’ll bike southwards across the Po Valley along the Mincio River, Lake
Garda’s only outlet. In Lombardy, we’ll bike to Mantua, situated on a picturesque peninsula in the Mincio
river. This city, associated with great names of history, art and literature, is our final cycling goal. We’ll
spend the night in the hotel "Casa Poli" in the old town. (During 4 dates the route differs slightly due to an
extra stay in Fumane. The tours end on saturday, about noon, in Verona.)
7th Day Saturday: Mantua
This morning, a local city guide will lead us through the former seat of the wealthy Dukes of Gonzaga. The
ornate palaces of the Gonzaga family were important centers of the Renaissance. In Italy’s largest palace,
the huge 500-room Palazzo Ducale, you’ll have a chance to admire masterful frescoes by Andrea
Mantegna. Our trip ends at noon. If you have to leave that early, we will take you to the train station.
The tour ends in Mantua. If you have a return flight from Verona you get there by train in about one hour.
Both airports, Innsbruck and Verona, have good connections to larger international airports, such as
Frankfurt or Rome.
