GIFTS AND DECORATIVE ACCESSORIES’ GIFTED RETAILERS GO INTERNATIONSTATIONERY
AL IN 2013 WITH A GIFT RETAILER FROM AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, AMONG
THOSE CHOSEN AS REPRESENTATIVE OF A TYPICAL AND SUCCESSFUL GIFT
GOURMET
RETAILER. The rest of this year’s Gifted Retailers are geographically spread out across
the U.S., from east to west and north to south. They are all representative of the infinite
variety that makes up the gift retailing realm: resort and hospital gift shops, airport
stores, toy merchants, garden and floral shops, Christmas shops, and of course general
gift and home accent stores.
The majority of our chosen retailers are single store operations, with three having
two locations and one having 22 different locations. Twenty-one of our 25 retailers have
embraced one or more forms of social media, especially Facebook, to connect with their
customers; even if they don’t have a store website, they are finding this is an effective
and powerful way to reach out. The length of time these 25 merchants have been in
business is evenly spread out, with six each in business between one and five years, five
to 10 years and 10-20 years; seven have been in business more than 20 years. In terms of
average store size, nearly 75 percent of stores do business in 800-2,000 sq. ft. of selling
space. The largest individual store operation is 5,000 sq. ft. And, on average, the majority of these stores have between three and 10 employees with a few having only one.
Each has a unique take on what they believe sets them apart from their competition
and helps them be successful, and that is why they rank among our “gifted,” because
that is typical of good gift retailers. •

HOW THE LIST WAS COMPILED
Gifts and Decorative Accessories’ exclusive report, 25 Gifted Retailers 2013, presents snapshots of independent gift and decorative accessory retailers that are using innovative approaches to marketing and merchandising and are making a difference
in their communities. This list is by no means comprehensive, nor is it a ranking. Many more than the 25 retailers listed here
are strong retailers within their communities.
Because sales volumes are of interest; however, Gifts and Decorative Accessories does provide sales estimates for all companies. All sales figures and ranges are Gifts and Decorative Accessories market research estimates and are for total 2012 store
sales, which may include revenues from the sale of products other than gifts and accessories. All sales figures and store counts
are for the calendar year 2012.
Gifts and Decorative Accessories compiled this report by surveying independent retailers, researching business newspaper
archives and speaking with gift industry insiders. Information was gathered, compiled and analyzed by Gifts and Decorative
Accessories’ research department.
