“The bluest skies you’ve ever seen are in
Seattle. And the hills the greenest green,
in Seattle. Like a beautiful child, growing
up, free an’ w ild. Full of hopes and full of
fears, full of laughter, full of tears. Full of
dreams to last the years, in Seattle.”
— Seattle, sung by Perry Como/lyrics by Ernie Sheldon and Jack Keller

President’s Welcome
Howdy! Welcome to
Music City USA! I hope
you are ready for a
musical week, filled with
competitions, the chance
to connect with old
friends and make new
ones, great education,
sightseeing and exciting
events around every
corner!
Approximately 4,000 competitors, whom have
already qualified by winning a regional competition
or a wildcard berth, will be on stage at the Sommet
Center during the chorus and quartet semifinals
on Wednesday and Thursday. The winners of those
elimination sessions will go on to Friday’s and
Saturday’s finals! And beginning this year we will also
see the 10 best small and mid-sized choruses compete
on stage on Tuesday. Don’t forget that barbershop’s
young divas will compete in the Rising Star Quartet
Contest on Saturday. I figure that we’ll all be one big
goose bump by the end of the week – it’s just too
exciting!
Throughout the week see our 2009 champions, MOXIE
LADIES and the fabulous Melodeers Chorus perform,
as well as the Young Women in Harmony Festival
Chorus, the Young Singer’s Foundation’s special guest,
Elizabeth Dewhirst, and on Saturday a very special
performance by the Family Chorus and and our new
2010 International Champion Quartet. WOW!
But that isn’t all you have to look forward to. Crowns
will be the order of the day on Friday evening, as the
Coronet Club, our quartet champions from past years,
take the stage to entertain us. Not only do we get the
chance to hear our favorite quartets, as well as the
Coronet Chorus, we have special guest, Kathy Mattea,
a real Nashville star, headlining the second half of the
show! Don’t miss it!
Jim Arns and the Melodeers will conduct a powerful
education class on Friday morning entitled “The
Common Thread — It’s All About The Music.” The
chorus will demonstrate how they maintain their
accurate, clean unit sound, and share their methods for
getting each member to have individual ownership of
the character in every song. They will also demonstrate
how they create such a strong link between vocal
production and emotional performing.
Harmony Bazaar will be located at the Nashville
Convention Center — so make time to check out all
the shopping possibilities. Sweet Adelines sales staff
will have many new items for you, along with your
favorites, including music, pitch pipes, calendars and
various learning media. The Young Singers Foundation
silent auction will be in that same area — the
shopping opportunities are endless!
And if all that wasn’t enough to keep you pumped
about convention week, on Saturday evening just
before the 2010 International Champion Chorus is
announced, MOXIE LADIES and I will teach what we
hope will be the World’s Largest Singing Lesson. An
official adjudicator from Guinness World Records will
be present to witness our record attempt, and will
be prepared to confirm the record onsite. Can you
imagine it? You will not want to miss the opportunity
to be present and take part in a world record! I know I
can’t wait to be part of Sweet Adelines history!
I’m overwhelmed with excitement about sharing
our love of barbershop in Music City this year, and I
can’t wait to see each and every one of you share in
the joy and happiness of International Convention
and Competition week. Your International Board
of Directors hopes you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime
experience and soak up the sights and sounds this
musical week has to offer. Once again, welcome to
Nashville!

Coronet Club Trophy
Presented by: Tomi McEvoy, Coronet Club President
The Renee Craig Trophy – Each year the Coronet Club presents a traveling
trophy to the new champion quartet. The current trophy is named in honor of
Renee Craig who has been an active member since 1954. She was the recipient
of the first Sweet Adelines International Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
Renee has hundreds of titles to her credit and when you think of our extensive
arranging program, you think of her. Renee was lead in the Cracker Jills (1957 International Champion Quartet) and, as master director of Ramapo Valley
Chorus, she led the chorus to the gold in ‘79, ‘86 and ‘90. Renee is more than a
Sweet Adeline, she is an icon.
The first international quartet trophy, 1947-1966, was dedicated to Ozzie Westly
in honor of his work in the early years of the organization. The second traveling
trophy, 1967-1986, honored Floyd Connett, our first education director. The third
traveling trophy, 1987-2001, was in memory of Jewel M. King who shared her
joyful spirit with Sweet Adelines for nearly 40 years.
ASCAP Trophy
Presented by: Ed Starke
ASCAP – The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP)
is a voluntary, nonprofit association that acts as a clearinghouse for performing
rights licensing. Since 1962, ASCAP has honored our organization by presenting
individual trophies to the members of the international champion quartet and
to the director of the international champion chorus.
Conclusion
The Winners Song - Page 54
Directed by: Diane Huber, River Blenders Chorus, #5
Note: In 1993, the Sweet Adelines International and Coronet Club boards of directors
agreed that the International quartet and chorus champions are more aptly
designated by the calendar year in which they primarily hold their titles rather
than the year in which they win their titles. Thus, there are no “1993 International
Champions.” At this year’s 2009 International competitions, the quartet and chorus
winners become the 2010 international champions.

Music Education Class
The Common Thread – It’s All About The Music
The Melodeers have created a chorus culture that some might see
as minimal – and it is! Jim and the Melodeers make every decision
– including financial and administrative – based on how it will affect
their musical product. They have as few rules and regulations as possible and always keep their focus on the music they create together.
This approach allows them to maintain a simple and easily manageable chorus structure AND helps them to keep their attention on their
music!
The chorus will demonstrate how they maintain their accurate, clean
unit sound, and share their methods for getting each member to have
individual ownership of the character in every song. They will also
demonstrate how to create a strong link between vocal production
and emotional performing.
Join them at the Education Class on Friday, October 23, 2009, from
9:00 – 10:30 am in the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel to see
how they do it!

International Chorus Trophy
Presented by: Jim Arns, Melodeers Chorus, #3
The first international champion chorus trophy was retired in 1995. It
was designed by the Balfour Company and represents Sweet Adelines
International’s continuing efforts to harmonize the world. The traveling
trophy, 1973-1995, was first presented to the Racine (Wisconsin) Chorus,
directed by Jarmela Speta. It is now at international headquarters.
Currently a new trophy is presented each year and is retained by the
winning chorus.
