Münster‘s shopping streets … incredible variety!
Whether your budget is large or small, whether it’s classic chic you’re after or
the latest fashion accessories, whether it’s culinary delights you want or rare
antiques – in Münster you’ll find things you won’t find anywhere else. And,
what makes shopping in Münster a particularly relaxing experience is the short
distances to walk in the city centre. So … what are you waiting for?
Prinzipalmarkt
This is the heart of the old Hanse city –
with its unique flair. Under the arcades
there are stores full of elegant fashion,
high-class specialist stores, jewellers’
and antique shops.
Salzstraße
This, the oldest trading street in Münster, is today a shopping paradise with
a broad mix of styles. Home not only
to exclusive shops and the very latest
stores, but also to gems of Baroque
architecture.
Ludgeristraße
This, Münster’s busiest pedestrian
precinct, is home to a special attraction – the MÜNSTER ARCADES, a
high-class shopping mall on three
floors which also has some excellent
restaurants.
Rothenburg / Aegidiimarkt
This boulevard leads past high-class
shops and local individualists to the
newly designed square which opens
up between Aegidius Market and the
newly converted State Museum.
Hansecarré and Stubengasse
This shopping quarter, awarded the
German Urban Development Prize,
opens up entirely new vistas for a
stroll through Münster’s city centre.
Space for attractive shops and stylish
restaurants.
Alter Fischmarkt
A new portal to the city centre presents its elegant gabled architecture.
The picture is characterized by attractive courtyard restaurants, a children’s
store full of things to do and see, and
exclusive fashion shops.

Advent in Münster – 21.11. – 23.12.2016 and 27.11. – 23.12.2017
When the Prinzipalmarkt is bathed in lights and
the smell of pine trees, mulled wine and roasted
almonds fills the streets, then the festive season has
arrived again in Münster. Santas and Christmas bands
roam the streets, the shops and stores are festively
decorated – and no fewer than five Christmas markets
weave their magic in the centre of Münster. In such
surroundings looking for presents is fun – and the
romantic Christmas atmosphere is all part of it.
The “Advent in Münster” package deal:

Münster in winter
When the snowflakes dance through
Münster the city is transformed into
a winter wonderland – and the slopes
by the Promenade are turned into a
paradise for toboggans. The absolute
highlight is if it’s cold enough and Aasee (lake) freezes over, then the whole
of Münster celebrates a folk festival by
skating on the lake.
Domplatz (Cathedral Square)
Münster –
the traditional Christmas spirit
Anyone who has been to Münster at
Advent thinks it’s wonderful – not least
because of the unique backdrop the city
provides, captivating everyone with its
charm. And whether you go and see the
Christmas fairytale at the city theatre,
go along with one of the pre-Christmas
guided tours of the city with tales of
traditions and customs, or go and admire the priceless 18th century Neapolitan crib in the City Museum – magical
moments are guaranteed with any of
the special things on offer.

Skulptur Projekte 2017
Every 10 years Münster becomes the Mecca of the international art world. Since 1977
the Skulptur Projekte have been
exploring art in public spaces.
For the fifth event of its kind,
in 2017, the team of curators
has invited artists from all over
the world to produce new, sitespecific works in consideration
of Münster’s urban environment – whether in the classic
form of sculpture, in temporary
installations or performances.
At the same time, the projects
point beyond the specific location. They reflect not only contemporary concepts of sculpture, but also our global world
today and question the relationship between public and
private spaces in times of increasing digitalization.

Take a deep breath!
The green side of Münster
What would Münster be without its lush greenery? For one thing it provides our healthy city climate, long-term; but it also
contributes to the well-being of our guests. For many guests, it’s important to have a holiday in a healthy climate – so why
not travel here by train and explore Münster by bike? Also, many hotels have been awarded a label for the sustainable,
environment-friendly way they run their business. If you want to take a little time out to relax between shopping, sightseeing
and enjoying the culture, you’re sure to find a peaceful green oasis to unwind in.
The Promenade
Where once the city walls stood, the
green belt of the Promenade (4.5 km)
now encircles the Old Town. The Promenade – lined with lime trees and
closed to cars – is an important route
for anyone out and about on foot or by
bike, at the same time offering green
surroundings in the immediate vicinity
of the city centre.
Botanical Garden
Around Aasse (lake) and the Zoo
Very close to the Old Town is Aasee,
inviting visitors to enjoy the greenery.
A definite maritime flair can be enjoyed
on the Aasee terraces. One highlight,
especially for families, is of course the
all-weather zoo – and right next door
are the LWL Natural History Museum
with its planetarium, and the Mühlenhof Open Air Museum.

Botanical Garden
One special highlight in Münster’s
parkland and garden landscape is the
University Botanical Garden, which is
over 200 years old and has a lot to offer from the world of plants – from the
farm garden to the hot-house. There
are also, on request, special guided
tours by experts.

The River Aa
On the 2.3 kilometres that it flows
through Münster’s city centre, the
River Aa offers a variety of scenes:
residential and academic; relaxation
and trade. The idyllic paths along the
riverside provide plenty of opportunities to explore.
Rieselfeld European bird sanctuary
On the north-eastern edge of town the
Rieselfeld bird sanctuary awaits bird
lovers and other nature lovers. This
European Nature Reserve for wading
birds and waterfowl is a natural habitat

Churches, museums, and all those streets – a real challenge for shorter legs. City breaks with children? That’s when
parents need lots of good ideas! But don’t worry: Münster is a family-friendly city, young at heart, and you can tell that by
the many things we have on offer specially for the little ones.

Münster for families
If you’re out and about with children,
all the greenery in Münster offers a
welcome diversion – with lots of space
for them to play, run around or relax.
But there are other things on offer
for children too. For example, did you
know that Felix the Rabbit, that chil
dren all over the world dream of, comes
from Münster? And something that
will interest teenagers is the fact that
Münster is also home to skater guru
Titus Dittmann, who made skateboards famous in Germany and is still
a trendsetter today.
Have fun in the Maxi Tower
So you’d like to go to the museum
– but your children are not exactly
thrilled at the prospect? In the Maxi
Tower in the Stadthaus there’s a lot of
fun and activities on offer for boys and
girls aged 4 to 10. They can climb, rest,
play, build something or have a book
read to them. No advance booking
required, and the children are looked
after for up to 3 hours – € 3 per child.
By the way – you can rent a buggy here,
too.
Children‘s University
Münster
Maxi-Sand
If your children are still small and need
a rest, why not visit the Maxi Sand
Oasis at Syndikatplatz? The huge
sandpit in the city centre is open from
May to September (Mon – Sat from
11 am) and is designed for children up
to the age of 6. After 6 pm the buckets
and spades are exchanged for a volleyball net, and it’s time for the grown-up
sand lovers to have their fun!
Special offers for children
We’ll be pleased to help if you’re looking
for other activities for your children –
e.g. concerts, theatre and guided tours
of the city for kids, as well as special
programmes in museums and at the
Children’s University. You can find
playgrounds in our city guide for kids,
there are Easter and summer holiday
programmes, and we have informa
tion on riding stables, all-weather zoo,
minigolf, outdoor swimming baths, indoor playgrounds and the soccer hall.

32 Awaydays in Münster
Kuhviertel
You‘re not off to bed already?!
Münster‘s places to go
You’d certainly be missing out on something! Münster is a university town and it’s no coincidence that it’s famous for
its night-life. Everyone can find something to suit their tastes here – from traditional Westphalian beer cuisine to the
trendiest club.
Kreativkai
A visit to the Kreativkai, Münster’s
place-to-go at the former harbour, is a
must – and not only on warm summer
evenings. Set in a combination of old
harbour charm and exceptional new
architecture, there is an exciting mix
of art and culture, gastronomy and
hip clubs waiting for visitors – all in
stylish surroundings and right by the
water. For some, it’s the perfect end to
the day. For others, the beach with the
palm trees is the starting point for an
exciting night of clubbing.
Hawerkamp
If you don’t necessarily like things to
be neat and tidy, take a look around
this former industrial wasteland called
“Hawerkamp”. Clubs, workshops,
studios – here, between rusty railway
tracks and concrete walls covered in
graffiti, is where the alternative and
hip-hop scenes have moved in. It is a
place with cult status far beyond Münster, not least because of the annual
Vainstream Rock Festival.
Tips for the evening
How about taking in a movie? The
Cineplex has 9 screens, with all the
current blockbusters. Lovers of art films
will find an award-winning range in the
Schlosstheater or the Programmkino
Cinema. And from the hottest discos
to live gigs by older heroes of the rock
scene – there’s a lot on offer in the
Jovel Music Hall. Or why not try the
Hot Jazz Club? From Randy Brecker
and Bill Evans to Brian Auger and John
Lee Hooker, Jr. – they’ve all performed
here. And Gleis 22 has repeatedly been
voted Germany’s most popular club.
For nightbirds
There’s so much variety in Münster’s
nightlife that there really is something
for everyone: you can party and dance
in the Kuhviertel Quarter and in the
Old Town, drink a nice cold beer in the
beer garden, eat excellent food and
count the reflections of the stars in the
water in a trendy restaurant down by
the harbour or on the Aasee terraces.

Beyond the city limits
More Münster with us!
Although Münster offers so many ideas for things to do and see, why not take a look beyond the city – to Münster’s park
landscape. And what better way to get there than by bike, our No. 1 means of transport? Take a relaxed ride along our
excellent network of cycle paths, and soon you won’t be entirely certain whether you’re still in the city or already in the
countryside.
>> www.tourismus.muenster.de – Link: Münster is well worth seing – Palaces and castles
We’ll be happy to help you on your
way, for example with our cycle maps:
“Cycle Tours round Münster”, “The
100-Castles Route” or the “Ideas and
Tips for Cycling Tours” set. These show
you some destinations well worth vis
iting in the immediate surroundings of
Münster. Just two examples:
Rüschhaus
Along with the Residence, St. Clemenskirche (church) or the Erbdrostenhof,
this pretty manor house is one of
the masterpieces which the Baroque
architect J.C. Schlaun built in Münster.
Once a place where the poet Annette
von Droste-Hülshoff sought refuge
and worked, the house is today a
museum dedicated to the poet. The
French Baroque garden is also well
worth seeing, and is open to the public
all the time.
Burg Hülshoff
This, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff‘s
birthplace, is located a little farther
out towards Baumberge. One of the
sleepy moated castles so typical of the
Münsterland, it has been in the
family’s possession since the 15th
century. Parts of the castle house a
Droste Museum, and the wide open
gardens contain a wildlife enclosure
and a garden island inviting visitors
to take a walk. Guests can relax in the
café restaurant in the castle.
Regional cycle routes:
100 castles and the Peace Route
We’ll be happy to help you on your
way, for example with our cycle maps:
“Cycle Tours round Münster”, “The 100
Castles Route” or the “Ideas and Tips
for Cycling Tours” set. These show you
some destinations well worth visit-
ing in the immediate surroundings of
Münster. Just two examples: If palaces
and castles are your thing, there’s certainly no lack of them around Münster.
The “100 Castles Route” is the king
of the cycle tours, linking up the
palaces, stately homes and castles of
the Münsterland. The overall route can
easily be divided up into four smaller
routes or into daily tours. And if you’d
like to follow in the footsteps of the
men who forged the Peace of Westphalia, the “Peace Route” connects
the historic Town Halls in Münster and
Osnabrück, where the peace treaties
were signed.
