ing industrial fields in the 21st century, by inviting organizations belonging to the industry to the artificial island
named “Port Island” through collaborative efforts between
industry, academia and government since 1998. The City
of Kobe has promoted this project for 17 years. Currently,
“state-of-the-art” research institutions, highly specialized
hospitals, and more than 280 biomedical companies and
universities have entered this area to form one of the
largest biomedical clusters in Japan.

The City of Kobe started the “Kobe Medical Industry
Development Project” as one of the earthquake restoration projects to recover the economy of Kobe which was
severely affected by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake
on January 17, 1995. Recognizing anew the “importance
of life”, Kobe was determined to promote a new industry,
protect the lives of citizens and contribute to international
society. The city has been engaged in the development of
an R&D hub for state-of-the-art biomedical technologies
and has promoted the medical industry, one of the grow-

The first reason why we were attracted by Kobe is the presence of the Kansai’s core top academics; or
you could even say Japan’s core top academics. This academia includes RIKEN, the Foundation for
Biomedical Research and Innovation, Kobe University, Konan University and Kobe Gakuin University.
Actually, we have interviewed key doctors in many hospitals, and through doing so we understood what kind
of products doctors wanted us to produce. We realized that there were more needs than we expected. Some
other doctors kindly said that they would help us evaluate new products after production.
President
Since rental offices and facilities for temporary
use (for RI experiments and animal
experiments) are available, effective research
activities and business with reduced initial costs
are possible. In addition, various outsourcing
needs are satisfied due to highly professional
companies that provide a synthesis service on a
commission basis, supply model animals,
produce prototype models on a commission
basis and offer other services being located in
the Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster.
Q. Why did your company join the Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster?
A.
We are a medical robot technology company, and the viewpoint of users is our top priority. If we are not aware
of opinions of doctors and people in the public administration sector, we cannot go forward. In this regard, the
Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster is the best place to promote marketing, as many hospitals are located
here and generous support from the City of Kobe is available.
There are not only doctors but also business people from various companies here, and we are always actively
exchanging knowledge and information with them. We have opportunities to meet people from companies we
don’t know, and they tell us that they can do something new for us. We can meet new people here without
needing to find and visit them. The Kobe Biomedical Innovation Cluster has much to offer medical companies,
and we are taking full advantage of our place in the Cluster to produce top-class products.
The City of Kobe was designated as a National
Strategic Special Zone in May 2014. Regulatory
reforms and other measures are implemented
comprehensively and intensively to reinforce the
international competitiveness of various
industries and facilitate the development of the
base for international economic activities, by
concentrating on the promotion of structural
changes for the economic society.

In addition, our former research center was located in Yamazaki, on the border between Osaka
Prefecture and Kyoto Prefecture, and therefore Kobe is in an excellent location in terms of commuting.
There are also many high-quality Junior High Schools and High Schools in Kobe. Aside from education
and research, Kobe has a shopping and entertainment district called Sannomiya, and provides a
friendly environment where you can get to know other residents. As for child rearing, we can establish
a day-care center within a company with the help of the Kobe Municipal Government. Kobe offers us a
pleasant working environment.
The members of our company felt excited when we decided to move to Kobe.
