CLASS OF 2010!
Graduation, a time of celebration, reflection, eagerness, sadness and so many more emotions. The St. Joseph
High School Class of 2010 brought forth all of these emotions of May 30th as they said their final goodbyes to life
as high school students. Standing as one for perhaps the last time, this class of 133 students was a tough one to say
goodbye to. In their four short years here on the St. Joe campus, these young adults managed to entrench themselves
into out hearts, and it is with much pride (and a little bit of sadness) that we say farewell and good luck as you take
that first step into “life after high school”.
The Baccaulaureate Mass for this class was on May 26th. Next was the Senior Awards Ceremony and
breakfast for the seniors and their parents on May 27th. Then it was off to Grad Nite, to the “Happiest Place on
Earth”, followed by lots of sleep, graduation parties and then the actual graduation.
As friends and family watched and listened, Valedictorian, Mary Clare Rigali, Salutatorian, Zachary
Gastelum and Class President, Daniel Kirk all reflected on the past, present and of course the future of this class.
Receiving the honor of Most Valuable Knight (selected by her classmates) was Mary Clare Rigali. Also awarded
by the school were the Paul and Margaret Ontiveros family. When a family has put at least 5 students through
St. Joseph High School, they are recognized for their support and awarded a plaque. This family represents the first
time a second generation of Knights has put through 5 or more students, and in all, 22 Ontiveros family members
have successfully graduated from St. Joe’s. Paul and Margaret are both members of the class of 1972. Their
children are; Isaac ‘97, Zachary ‘99, Noah ‘03, Caleb ‘05, Molly ‘08 & Hannah ‘10.
Congratulations Class of 2010. You will be missed. There is no doubt in our minds that many of you graduates
from this class will accomplish great things along life’s journey. Take the time to enjoy those accomplishments and
please keep in touch with your alma mater - GO KNIGHTS!!
All eyes are at the front of the stage at Allan Hancock
College, as the class of 2010 waits to receive their high
school diplomas.
2010 Seniors celebrate outside after attending the
Baccaulaureate Mass on May 26th. From L to R:
Jacqui Sanchez, Danielle Jaeckels, Garrett Dudock,
Abby Kenshalo, Jacob Rivera, Marissa Fosdick,
Vinnie Vilapondo, Marcos Perez & Chloe Johnson.

UPDATES FROM YOUR CLASSMATES
’71 On May 1, 2010 a benefit chicken
BBQ was held for Joe Marta. Joe
has been diagnosed with a rare brain
disease named Fronto Temporal
Dementia. Joe’s family and many
friends were out in force to make
sure this BBQ was a huge success.
With about six pits fired up and over
1100 meals sold, not only were past
alumni helping out, but current St. Joe
students also donated time to help out
a fellow Knight. Please say a prayer
for Joe and his family as he fights this
very tough disease.

Brunello from the class of 1982. Gino graduated from Fresno
State University, where he became interested in physical therapy
and took on the challenge of becoming a certified physical
therapist. St. Joseph H.S. and Santa Maria in general are lucky to
have such a caring and devoted physical therapist, who not only is
good at what he does, but also generously donates countless hours
to high school students throughout the Santa Maria community.
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning Gino evaluates and treats
athletes with injuries, without any cost to them.
In addition to working at his physical therapy practice,
SIMS Physical Therapy, Gino’s interest include poetry (he is a
published poet), a member of the Knights of Columbus at SLDM,
an Advisory Board member at SJHS and spending time with his
family. Gino and his wife, Lisa, have three children; sons, Vincent

he has been a long-time member of the St. Joseph Advisory Board.
In his “spare time”, Chuck actually has a job. He is the President
of Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, and spends much of his

SERVICE RECOGNITION
Thank you to the following Staff and Faculty members
who were recognized in a school-wide Mass on February
2, 2010 for their dedication and outstanding service to St.
Joseph High School.
Celebrating 10 years of Service - Mr. Ron Chrest Head Grounds Keeper.
Celebrating 15 years of Service - Mr. Michael
Tscheekar - Academic Counselor, Mrs. Staci Cochiolo Math Teacher, and Mrs. Debbie Swann - Math Teacher
Celebrating 20 years of Service - Mrs. Sandy Aguilera,
Mrs. Sylvia Cortez and Ms. Suzanne Solorio - The
Kitchen Ladies, or as I like to refer to them, Flora, Fauna
and Merriweather, my three good fairies.
Last, but certainly not least, celebrating 25 years of
service - Sr. Regine Donner, DMJ - French Teacher.
St. Joseph High School Junior, Urina Kim
was selected to represent Santa Barbara County
at the State Science Fair with her project on
DNA. Urina’s DNA study of the crustose version
of the red coralline algae recently earned her a
gold medal at the Santa Barbara County Science
Fair, which sent her to the California State Science Fair on May 18th and 19th. Her study will
eventually be published in scientific journals.
Urina was born in Seoul, South Korea,
and raised in Los Alamos. Her parents, Kwang
& Kyong gave their daughter a choice of which
high school to attend, and it was programs like
the Research Institute that attracted her to St.
Joseph High School.
Urina’s studies in algae have also earned
her the attention of judges at UC Irvine’s Student
Humanities and Science Symposium.
Urina is just one of many high school
students enjoying the benefits of the St. Joe’s Science Department’s Research Institute, headed by
on-staff teacher, Larry Madrigal.
EVERY 15 MINUTES
This year St. Joseph High School participated in the Every 15 Minutes program. This program
was designed and is dedicated to bringing to the forefront the dangers of alcohol and other substances.
Beginning with a school-wide announcement over the P.A. system, a re-enactment of an actual
911 call regarding a car crash was played. The entire school community was ushered out to the parking lot next to the tennis courts where, graphically displayed, were wrecked vehicles with victims inside.
During this re-enactment, fire trucks, CHP vehicles (we actually had a CHP helicopter land on the football
field to transfer one of the victims), ambulances and a coroner’s vehicle were all on the campus. The entire program was geared to being as realistic as possible, with two of the victims dying, one surviving and
another student being arrested for drunk driving.
The following day a school-wide memorial service for those students who had “died” and a video
of the guilty party as she was sentenced in court was shown. It was so realistic that some students and
adults were seen crying at the memorial service, even though they knew this was not real. It brought to
the surface the fact that none of us are invincible and there are consequences for our actions. If only one
student (and I believe there were many more) makes the conscious decision to not drink and drive, then
this program was a success.
A huge thank you to all of those students, parents, outside services and especially the grant provided by Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley, for bringing this program to our school.

BACK-TO-BACK CIF CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Celebrating another awesome season at their awards banquet
held in the school library are from L to R: (back row) Mecca
Perkins, Heather Madrigal, Tiffany Kinson, Alexa Galloway,
Kim Ritchie, Aly Beebe, Analise Riezebos, Kelsi English
and Brianna Bognuda - (front row) Amy Ornelas & Alannah
Robb.
REPEAT CHAMPS!
St. Joseph High School Girls’ Basketball became the first repeat CIF champs at the school since the
‘89-’90 & ‘90-’91 seasons, when the girls won two years in a row. After winning the title in Division V last
year, the girls were moved up to Division IV and once again showed what they are made of by taking that title
too!
What an incredible group of girls. They aren’t just a team. They’re family and best friends. Coach
Eddie Torres ‘73 is no stranger to basketball titles, having coached six teams (both boys and girls) to C.I.F.
titles. Congratulations on a job well done.
On a side note, if you happen to live anywhere around Chico, CA, Analise Riezebos will be heading to Chico
State University, where she plans on continuing her basketball career on a partial athletic scholarship.
One other thing to note, Aly Beebe, who just finished her Sophomore year here on campus, not only was
named Ms. Basketball State Sophomore Player of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports, but has been selected to
participate in the 2010 U-17 National Team Trials held June 8-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs, CO. Aly will vie for a spot on the 12 member team and the 4 member 2010 Youth Olympic
Games team.
DID YOU KNOW:
The average gpa from our 11 seniors offered athletic scholarships was over a 3.5.
Eighteen of our nineteen varsity teams made it to C.I.F. this year.
